  1. For more than a decade, Thai governments have been preoccupied with "the great power struggle". Add to this that long-term planning hadn't been a strong Thai trait even before that and it's no surprise that precious little is being done to improve the water management situation. It's a big challenge, no doubt, but something could be done if those in charge were prepared to take it on. I think things will get a lot worse in years to come before that will eventually happen.
  2. Indeed. Just like many straight farang have no idea how many (female) hookers use Thai Friendly.
  3. Between samebb and ryanasia, samebb's behavior was far worse, because he threatened another member with physical violence. For that reason, suspending samebb for just 30 days but permanently banning ryanasia was poor judgement - the punishment should fit the "crime" (infraction).
  4. One potential issue is the possibility of the government spying on those users who are within their jurisdiction. For example, the Thai government can establish that user "Alexx" sent this very post using my internet connection, which is linked to my real world identity - unless I use a VPN. If this site had SSL, that would be much tougher for them.
  5. Very interesting, thanks for going into detail! Here in Bangkok, there's also quite a large community of Pinoys and Pinays working here - some officially, others less officially.
  6. I think in this particular case they are more worried about their own citizens than about foreigners. They mention potential bombers in the South, but I guess what they are really after are dissidents (opponents to military rule and those accused of defaming the highest institution).
  7. If they have a license for facials, maybe that's what they should offer.
  8. Well, no damage has been done yet. If he's legit and merely naïve, he has every chance to move ahead with caution.
  9. Jeez some people would really better stay at home! If you're that worried about getting injured taking a tuk tuk ride in Bangkok, I wonder what will happen once you realize that the country as a whole isn't much safer? People got electrocuted in swimming pools, should we add staying out of swimming pools to the travel advisory?
  10. Whenever I've been to Babylon, I've always found that there's a good mix of people around. While it's true that there are more ageing farang than in other gay saunas in Bangkok, it is also true that there are more young, hot Asians who are interested in ageing farang. Others go to other saunas.
  11. Just post when you will be in town again and there might be other takers...
  12. I've used the services of three gay tour guides. Two of them, in the course of our time spent together, hinted at financial issues and the need to earn some extra money. It didn't surprise me.
  13. Schuft, I'm somewhat baffled that you are seriously considering marriage even before having met him in person. My advice would be to take it much more slowly. I take it you aren't familiar with Thai culture or anything Thai at all, so you will definitely need some time to familiarize yourself with that. The trickiest part for you is that you won't have any point of reference (i.e. other Thais) when trying to make sense of your prospective husband's feelings and actions. Please don't underestimate that challenge, your mindset and background are probably vastly different from his. Add to that the significant age difference (he's twenty, you wanted to visit Thailand in the 80s), while in itself not necessarily a problem, and there's a lot of room for clashes of cultures, expectations and lifestyles. I somehow hope you're just trolling us, but if you're real, fasten your seatbelt, you're in for quite a ride.
  14. While that sounds somewhat selfish, I think you do have a point. It's likely that an increasing number of gays from Indonesia will try to get out, one way or another.
  15. Why should I not have said Manchester, in your opinion? That was the latest terrorist attack in the West at the time I wrote it. Yet another one in a never-ending series, which is exactly the point I wanted to make.
  16. In another thread, you've mentioned that your upcoming trip to Thailand will be your first one. May I ask where you've met your Thai boyfriend (not in Thailand, apparently) and for how long you've been knowing him? I'm asking because the amount of evidence you can provide for your relationship has an impact on your options for sponsorship of his visa application. Unless he can qualify for some kind of visa on his own, that can be a daunting task.
  17. There's no better way for the government to incite the masses than shutting down Facebook. Much as I would personally appreciate it (I guess productivity would skyrocket throughout Thailand!), I'm sure the government is fearful of the massive backlash this would cause. They really have enough problems as it is. Also, by and large Facebook seems to be complying with their orders to block certain content in Thailand, it just takes some time to implement it.
  18. I think the terrorist threat is a global phenomenon at this time. If you're unfortunate enough, you could get hit in Bangkok or in Manchester or anywhere else.
  19. There are no ATMs before going through inbound immigration. You need to have the cash before you land. Edited to add: I think the consensus on forums such as ThaiVisa is that you've already made their shit list if and when they ask you to show funds (I've never been asked so far). At least at airports, some land borders seem to be notorious. In that case, they are looking for reasons to deny entry and it's very unlikely that they will accept anything other than cash or travelers checks.
  20. Suspensions given to two very naughty boys.
  21. On the bright side, closing three quarters of all Thai universities won't have any negative impact on the level of education. They're basically just degree mills anyway.
  22. I'm not saying posters should misrepresent themselves, I'm saying readers shouldn't get too attached emotionally to online personas that might later prove made up. That has always been an issue - I used "bulletin board systems" (BBS) in my late teens and back then we already had "trolls" and "fakers". They weren't popular back then and they aren't popular now, but they've always been there. I wrote that I don't really care, because I think there are roughly three categories of posts on this site and the authenticity of a poster only really matters for one of them: First, opinion pieces. The actual person who expresses an opinion shouldn't matter; what matters is the way it is presented and how well it aligns with facts and with your beliefs. If sglad writes something I wholeheartedly agree with, I'm happy to give his post a "like", even if he as a person is a mystery to me. Second, storytelling. The benchmark for a good story isn't if it's true, it's how interesting it is. Fiction and suspense writers rake in bigger dollars than those who write books on quantum physics, after all. I like trip reports that are juicy and intriguing, I tend to take them at face value and don't question their veracity. Unless there are obvious blunders that ruin the impression (or illusion, in some cases). Third, advice. That's the one category where I do judge a post by its author, just to err on the side of caution. If ChristianPFC tells us there's a bus from A to B or vinapu tells us a particular massage shop is top notch, the reason why I believe it is that I trust the poster based on their track record. sglad might well miss out on ever making that list.
  23. Actually he ridiculed YOU for misspelling caning, but granted, it can be argued that this wasn't the best topic to make any kind of silly joke. As for who or what he is, I don't really care. Everyone can be anyone on the Internet, I think the key is not to take things too seriously. While I personally don't see any benefit in misrepresenting myself, if it makes him happy, fine with me.
  24. I'm pretty relaxed about how I'm dressed. In Bangkok, I know the fashion police is busy with less-than-gymfit guys wearing Chang singlets and fat cows (aka female farang visitors) wearing fisherman pants or leggings, so they won't take any interest in me anytime soon.
  25. Ah, but Londoner, you "took a boy out of the bar", as it is often called. Surely that has been much more expensive over the years than the occasional Amsterdam session... The proverbial dead buffalo and similar expenses...
