  1. Posted Today, 01:47 AM I have had a very short visit to Bangkok after deciding that I wanted to visit Myanmar, having never been (that cut my time in Bangkok). I did my best to make full use of my time. Thought I'd share my experience to thank other posters here for their advice on my other visits scheduled for this trip. arena massage - older mostly muscled guys. Probably unfair, but felt to me like these guys were truckers or construction workers. If you like them a bit rough, this would work for you. I'm more of a face guy myself so didn't find much that suited me. One younger less muscled guy had, however, a megawatt smile. Jupiter 2018 - Went twice. Arrived just i time for the show the first night. Guys mostly like the college athlete types. The ripped abs were quite amazing. Show was very hoohum. They brought a woman up on stage and did a dance number of these two guys 'fighting' to grind on her. I am glad women are getting more sexually liberated, but it was a huge turn off for me and I left. Went back a couple nights later and picked a guy. turns out the guy was the prima donna I guess, since I was told that to off him would cost 5000 baht! Was told there were 2 boys like that among all the boys on stage. I guess if you can get it, you should, but I was having none of it and left. I'd also add that the layout of the bar is awful. The very large pillars obscure the view from a bunch of seats. Just not a well-designed place. If I were staying in town, I wouldn't be going back. Dreamboys - Hasn't changed since last time I was here like 6 or 7 years ago. first night I could have picked 4 or 5 guys. Had a good overnight with one for 3000. Second visit I spent too long picking and somebody else beat me to the guy I wanted. Oh well. Tawan - Also hasn't changed. Guys sitting around on their phones. Offed a Lao guy the last night I was in town. real muscle man, but needed to watch straight porn on his phone to perform. That' a first for me and a huge turn off. I get that these guys are mostly pretty straight, but I can't enjoy myself when they're that tuned out. I am staying near Senso Massage and will give them a try before I head to the airport. Also a shout out to siamroads.com. I booked two different guides to help show me around during the day, and both were good. I'd visited enough times that I didn't want to do the normal touristy things, but they helped me navigate the city, and were good companions during the day. If you're not that comfortable navigating, they're a good option. I'll be using one of their guides for my visit in Myanmar and will report on that later.

  3. Happy for you. I was an out gay man in my late 20s when I decided to marry my best friend, a woman. It's been brilliant for us. We are great together, just no sex. I think part of 'gay liberation' is that we get to define what works for us, not just make cookie cutter copies of traditional marriage. Hope you find something that works for you.
  4. I salute you. I'm turning 55 in August and am taking a sabbatical. I wasn't happy at my job and am close to what I need for retirement, so just said "fuck it." and quit. Going to do a fun around the world trip, and then look for something new when I get back starting in August. But I have to say this freedom is pretty intoxicating after 35 years of the grind!
  5. I had already decided that I didn't really personally feel right doing a favela tour. As a rich American who has traveled and lived overseas in a lot of economically challenged areas, it doesn't feel right to me to treat a poor neighborhood as a tourist attraction. Your mileage may vary. Add to that these significant safety concerns and I think it's pretty much off the table for me.
  6. I wasn't sure if I needed it, but turns out I forgot I got it several years ago for another trip.I'd like to pretend that advancing years has weakened my memory, but the truth is I always had a shitty memory! I am a strong believer in vaccines. Whatever the risks a vaccine may have, and most have very little, the risk of NOT getting it when you need it is far, far worse.

    Sri Lanka

Anybody have any good pointers on gay Sri Lanka. I find bits and snippits, but nothing about where and how to find the working boys.
  8. The apartment is in Copa, down near Ipanema. I took it from a number of older posts and what not that this was a good neighborhood for tourists to hang out in. Good comments on cheap eats too.
  9. Ok Hang gliding wouldn't have been on my list, but I think I'm now interested. Riobard pointed out to me kindly in a note that I should probably clarify my interests. While I'm open to all good ideas, I'm particularly interested in: -History. I love old stuff, and learning how we all got to be where we are today. I recognize that Rio isn't Rome, so the long arc of history isn't the same, but still interested. Sometimes its the small histories of people and places that can really engage you. -culture. I'm not really into watching martial arts, but enjoyed going to Muay Thai bouts in Bangkok because it was a very Thai thing. What are Rio/Brazil's cultural oddities (from an American's standpoint)? -nature/scenery. I'm not one to sit in a blind all day waiting for an elusive jungle cat, but I do very much enjoy getting up close and personal with nature. Some books have suggested the hike up to sugarloaf is very doable, and that sounds like fun to me. In a bit more than the last year I've lost about 100 pounds, and been working out very regularly and am in pretty good shape. I wasn't planning to do much gym stuff while I was travelling, but hiking does sound very nice. -I am not into shopping, BUT I am into people watching and wandering, so street markets, fairs, and places where the locals shop and you can see a bunch of interesting stuff, but don't want to purchase, IS something that I'd like. As a side note, I will be in Rio from August 2nd to the 13th, so if anybody else is there and wants to get together for a meal, I'm game.
  10. So here's another question. I've been reading the guidebooks, but what are folks favorite sights in or near Rio? What's a fun time, what's a yawn? I'm really looking for any good ideas, not just traditional tourist things. I'm currently booked for about 10 days in Rio. Should I consider jumping on a plane and going somewhere else for a day or two? (My round the world trip is all frequent flier miles, so am doing some side trips on my own in other places already).
  11. I do appreciate the advice. That said, I've booked an apartment since over the ~10 days it's a fair savings to me. They list a 24 hour doorman and unlike other places didn't list a no guests rule. I guess we'll see. Based on my read of the place and the doorman when I arrive, I can decide whether I'd even consider bringing someone back or will just do programs in the sauna. As has been pointed out, there are plenty of love hotels and the like that I could use if I feel the need for extended cuddle time. Worst case scenario, I abandon the place and move to a hotel. I am trying to travel a bit on a budget, and having my own kitchen for simple meals was the kicker for me. I don't really like eating out alone that much anyway.
  12. I think people who haven't been victims of random violence like to believe that their actions protect them. While you can be unwise, random is random. Act prudently, and get on with the living. The universe will kill you soon enough.
  13. while we're busy talking about how 'dangerous' Rio is, take a look at the number of shooting in chicago...
  14. This is, in fact, the key thing that gives me pause about doing an Airbnb. Lack of a safe or other place to secure valuables if I choose to have a guest. I may do it anyway, and as others have said, just not bring anybody back with me to the apartment. I was looking at building with 24 hour doormen. Anybody have any experience on how much you can count on a doorman to help with checking a guest versus a hotel reception?
  15. Thanks all for the useful updates in this thread. It does, however, remind me why I stopped coming to the site as much.
  16. Does anybody have any advice on net gay escort listings? I'm just wondering if there are other good options besides the saunas? I'm looking forward to those, but want to know if anybody has any advice on other options.
  17. Fair points. But I'm not a vampire these days (ah, my lost youth!), and I really like having a kitchen, even if it's just for a few drinks and snacks. But you remind me I should probably pay closer attention to the reviews on airbnb, and make sure I"m getting what I want, and not just getting cheaper!
  18. Thanks. I'd thought as much on safety (that it was probably overblown). I've travelled extensively, and while I make no claims to be super streetwise, I think I can handle it. I really prefer having my own place. I may or may not want to bring a boy home to it, but I can judge that. A number of the airbnb apartments did have 24 hour security, and were still a better deal than a hotel. On the gay thailand forum, I noticed folks talking about picking up boys in bangkok on dating apps. Has anybody had that experience in brazil?
  19. I'm doing my first trip to Brazil, a week in Rio in early August. I've read the forums for years and just never got around to the trip. I've read people talk about using translation apps on their phones to talk to the boys. Any recommendations? In many places, I've had great deals on Airbnb, and Rio looks like no exception. But the frequent discussion of safety makes me wonder if I'm still better at a hotel. Thoughts? Does anybody have an recommendation for english speaking gay guides? I wouldn't mind a guide for a day or two to get used to brazil and make sure I'm safe until I've got a feel for the city.
  20. I booked the Inn Saladaeng for my mid-july visit. Seemed a reasonable rate, close to the boy bars, and it was available. Anybody have any experience with the place?
  21. Hi, I'm not a complete newbie, but it's been a lot of years since I've been to Bangkok, so I'm hoping some more recently experienced folks will give me a hand. I've quit drinking, and would rather avoid the bar scene. I'm reading a bit about using social dating apps to pick up guys. How does that work? I'd be happier to just pay the guys and play at the hotel than to pay off-fees and massage fees. What's the going rate (I'm a bottom, and I like kissing) these days? I tend to prefer more athletic, built guys (not so into twinks), any place in particular I should go? I did Tawan last time, which was a bit hit or miss and pricier than the rest. I won't be in town long, so want to make sure I make good use of my time! Thanks in advance.
  22. You said I didn't know why I stopped posting and hanging out here much. So either I'm a liar or I'm an idiot. You want to fit me into your narrative of thin skinned people on the internet getting wound up. I simply don't care for shit storms. If I could predict them perfectly, then I could avoid them, but of course you can't. so when the incidents become common enough to annoy, you avoid the neighborhood.
  23. Yes, of course. I"m a liar too about why I don't visit. See, that's why I don't visit much, perfectly demonstrated.
  24. And this is why I don't post around here much anymore either. JD posts about his drama. I don't know JD, and don't much care, though I think the use of the N word is way off base. The drama is between them, and they're sort it out, or they won't. But then the local nasties decide they want to stir up the shit storm and now it's this. If I wanted to experience this infantile name calling, I'd go hang out at an elementary school play ground. Are your lives so boring that you need to make somebody else's drama about you? checking back out....
  25. The forums over there have always had way too much nastiness and drama. I was a member many years ago and left because I got tired of all the nastiness. Not sure why they are that way, but they are. Lots of people putting way too much emotion into stuff that isn't worth that much emotion.
