Goodbye, Bangkok
KeepItReal and 7 others reacted to reader for a topic
Left Bangkok last week for my twenty second year (have long forgotten how many individual trips but they must be closing in on 60). There we’re two things that stand out. First, was the opening of the first new gay bar in quite a while with the Dragon and Koi on Patpong 2. I believe it’s destined to do well, judging by the reception it’s energetic dancers have been receiving. Second, it’s the evolution of the massage business in Saphan Kwai. Although most of the shops are continuing to do wel due to the Continued arrival of newcomers, it’s the opening of Phoenix on Soi Inthamara 25 that stablished itself as unique. It’s all in, full service approach is superior to the competition because it eliminates the haggling. Eventually, I think, other shops will have to adopt the same policy or see their trade stagnate. One of my favorite moments each evening was opening the balcony doors and at about 1a.m. and listening to the muffled sounds of the workers collapsing the vendors stands on Patpong. My favorite view at sunset looking toward the river. Departure next morning from BKK wss nearly effortless, using the new immigration gate system. First one checks passport and second gate your photo .8 points -
I spent a week in PP catching up with a Canadian friend and we visited a lot of the specified places together. I have tried to be as factual as possible and I’d like to thank FloridaRob, vinapu and Harrystiilees for the info they gave me before my trip. A few general observations: Since my last visit 10 years ago, the traffic seems to have increased dramatically and certainly the car is king here. Be very careful crossing roads as some traffic do not adhere to traffic lights and pavements in many parts of the city are non existent. I felt safe wandering around the city but do ensure that you have enough lower denomination dollar notes as higher denominations can be difficult to spend. Tuk tuks plentiful and $2-3 dollars seemed to be the standard fare. Bars I visited Space Bar which was next to my hotel (Sun and Moon) twice. I met the owners, one of whom is from Spain and their adorable dogs that are friendly and in the bar. The waiters/hosts are incredibly fit and hot and tend to be more muscular and they will sit with you if you buy them a drink. Some guys spoke reasonable English and got very playful as the evening progressed. Some guys took their shirts off after midnight and were quite touchy feely. Very flirtatious but it ended there. The drinks were of a very good quality and it was. Fun place to visit with an interesting mix of local boys and visiting tourists and expat locals. I visited again and the same host guys I talked to on the first visit tended to monopolise my table despite the fact I was interested in talking to some of the other guys. It is the luck of the draw if you choose guys to sit with you who can’t really communicate except by translation apps. Around 12 host guys there when I visited. I would certainly recommend this friendly and laid back bar as a fun start or end to your evening. Fantastic eye candy. We spent a great evening at Toolbox bar. Doug the owner is a lovely, approachable guy and was happy to chat and give advice about PP. We went around 9pm on a Fri and there are about 20 host guys and 6 customers but the bar got busier with visitors from 10pm onwards. It was a great atmosphere especially as the boys did a number of interesting dance routines on the pool table! Very much a party atmosphere and the music was varied and fun. The boys are certainly of the twink variety and they were friendly, good looking and tactile. Drinks of a great quality and the bar also serves a selection of hot food. This was the bar that we enjoyed ourselves the most in PP and we stayed around 4 hours. Well worth a visit if only to see the beautiful boys there. We visited Blue Chili which seemed to be a large venue but didn’t stay as we were the only customers there. When passing again on a Friday evening, the place seemed completely packed and people were queuing to get in. It seemed to have a mixed crowd and we were told the busiest nights are Friday and Saturday. Massage I had some variable experiences during my time in PP. I visited Paradise Massage which is above the POC bar. Only one guy available to give massage and he was a young twinky type. Massage ($15 for an hour oil massage) was quite poor with little technique and expertise. I ended the massage early as it was not enjoyable. The premises look quite run down and general cleanliness was an issue. I would not recommend this place. I visited Hatha Khmer twice and I was delighted by the massages there. There were around 15 guys to choose from when I visited and you choose your guy from behind a window where they assemble, a bit like arena in BKK. A good range of guys that would satisfy most tastes. The first massage was an hour’s oil massage ($10) and the guy certainly was experienced and knew what he was doing. An excellent, firm massage and the $30 dollar tip was well deserved for the many extras he provided. The second massage was an hour and a half oil massage for $15 and the different masseur was good but not as firm or experienced as the first guy and this showed in his massage technique. The invariable fun that followed was prolonged and unrushed and a $30 tip was well earned. He even offered to bring another masseur into the massage room for fun if I wanted that. I was very happy with the venue which was clean and well decorated, the choice of hot guys as well as the quality of the massage and the extras. Well recommended. Saunas I visited 2 saunas during my stay. Love Spa is just around the corner from Hatha Khmer massage. It was $3 entry and it was quite busy at 5pm mid week. As far as I could gather I was the only Western guy there and the guys were primarily Cambodian. When changing, it was a bit disconcerting to have around 5 massage guys watching me and asking constantly if I needed a massage. Certainly the most aggressive approach I came across in Cambodia. The thing about this spa is that the spa areas and corridors are completely dark and it is like walking in a darkroom. For me, this was quite dangerous as I tripped over as I couldn’t see where I was going. I decided to leave as for me, it was an accident waiting to happen. My friend was staying at Arthur and Paul hotel. I visited on a Saturday night to go to the spa and it started to get busy after 9pm. $10 entry fee. The bar area is spacious and lovely and the pool area is a good place to relax, swim and talk to other guys. There seemed to be a lot of younger Cambodian guys in attendance. Again, the issue for me was the lack of light and the spa area and showers were too dark for me to walk around safely. Guys are friendly around the bar, pool area and changing room and this is a great place to link up with cute Cambodian guys. My friend, who was staying at the hotel enquired about the darkness level and one of the Cambodian guys stated that Cambodian guys are quite shy and don’t want to be seen having sex in a spa! As an addendum, my friend loved staying at A and P and raved about the breakfast, staff and massages which he deemed to be excellent ($20 for an hour plus tip). The staff here are good looking guys who will look after you if you decide to stay at the hotel. Apps I got lots of messages from guys on the usual apps (Grindr, Hornet and Heesay) but did not manage to hook up with anyone due to time constraints. I hope you find this info useful. I’m back to Thailand now for a Christmas and a break! Happy Christmas!6 points

I've stayed at Arthur and Paul a number of times over the years and it's my favourite hotel in S.E. Asia. The breakfast -eggs benefict- is awesome and the beds are supremely comfortable. My last trip, earlier this year, was solely to visit Space bar every night so I chose a hotel close to the bar. I considered the Sun and Moon but the reviews on TripAdvisor were not very encouraging. Did you have any problems there? I'm presuming the Hatha Khmer massage you refer to is the one around the corner from A&P. Is that correct? I thought it had closed down. I have had wonderful times with a guy there who quickly became my regular over the years. I called him "Mr bubble butt" and wrote about him extensively on the boards. He would wait for me at the bar in the garden area. He spoke quite good English but when he got stuck we could communicate in Japanese! (He thought knowing Japanese could help him find a good job). During our seasons we would fuck each other - 2 fucks for the price of one! (Not quite - I did pay him more). My tuk-tuk driver from A&P would be waiting outside when I'd finished and I would head off to dinner and then to Space Bar. When I was at A&P I was told the massage guys in the hotel were strictly massage only, with no extras. Has that now changed? One time I was sitting around the pool when a couple of hot guys started fucking on a sun bed. OMG!! The hotel staff were still talking about it when I returned a year later! Your post has now gotten me interested in A&P and Hatha massage again! I'm of to Japan for Christmas /New Year but will look into a trip to PP early next year. The only problem is, A&P is often booked out.4 points

No problem. Glad you found the info useful. It is ironic that in little over a week here, I have met more hot ‘up for it’ Cambodian guys in Jomtien than I have in the bars here. A lot of the bar guys in Jomtien are Cambodian or Lao. A lot I have talked to are considering going to Thailand to work as tourist numbers are apparently really down here at the present time. That said, PP is a fun place to visit as long as expectations are lowered somewhat.4 points

Fully agree. When they cleared Silom from stands many people commented that finally it will be easier to walk there to which my comment was that we have clear sidewalks at home so why bother to travel. I'm afraid that march to look like Singapore already started with hotel prices going up quite fast . Friend of mine who stays in Sukhumvit area and travels in second half in January told me that the same type of room in the same hotel in soi 5 he stay last year for the same dates is now 3/4 more expensive 105 vs 60 $3 points -

If Atlas is to succeed it has to find new and younger men and present them differently than Tawan is doing. Just a change of venue won’t cut it. It has to attract a greater clientele, including women. Maybe not what gays want to hear but necessary to pay the rent.3 points -
@Min thank you so much for sharing about your life. Am glad that you are helping J. I have been helping my regular guy for a number of years now. We don't regard each other as boyfriends but we are close. He treats me as his godfather "cha nuôi" while I treat him as my godson "con nuôi". I got to know him at X-Boys bar in Soi Twilight. After getting to know each other better for 2 years, con nuôi said he wanted to return to Vietnam permanently but he asked me for financial help. I said yes and it started with me sending him 12500 baht (S$500) every month. He managed to settle down into a job and could provide for his parents. We had agreed to cut down the monthly contribution gradually. It came down to 7500 baht per month (S$300) and then Covid hit. I helped him and his family ride out Covid with some additional contributions. After Covid, things didn't improve in Vietnam and con nuôi had no choice but to return to Bangkok to find work. He found a day job doing packing and deliveries. Probably encouraged by his friends, he went back to the life of gogoboy. He worked two jobs. He was at Dreamboys last year before the bar expelled all Vietnamese guys. This year, he found a place at Freshboys. He works there from 8.30pm to 1am (if he doesn't get any off), sleeps at 2am and wakes up at 7am for his day job which lasts till 6 plus. On his off days, he gyms at outdoor gym at Lumpini Park. He gets 2 or 3 offs a week - typically Chinese customers who want him to fuck them. He knows how to speak a bit of Mandarin hence his popularity among customers from mainland China. Being already 28 years old, con nuôi knows he cannot continue with his current situation forever. He is saving up to go back to Vietnam then enrol in a Korean language school full-time so that he can go to South Korea to work in shipbuilding as a permanent occupation. I told him I will continue helping him financially until he reaches South Korea.3 points

Fercho's is now fully installed at the Hotel Roma in Centro. They are hosting their first Christmas event on December 19th at the hotel. Entry is 30.000COP and they are advertising over 30 "modelos" onsite for the event. As always, any rooms and activities are at an additional cost, although they will be conducting their classic raffle (rifa) where you can win the services of one or more boys for an entry ticket that costs 25.000COP. Multiple draws throughout the day. Should also note that they have expanded their current roster of boys, and the catalogue images are much more explicit. And that decision was the beginning of the demise of BoyzBoyzBoyz (BBB) - as they eliminated what was fun for all of us - nude torso muscular men parading on the red carpet - as they now cater to the Asian female market - where they like their guys to walk around fully clothed - hence no need for an external gym to tantalize all of us while we waited for the 9pm parade. As stated by Vinapu, covid killed off the former exciting and unique BBB parade where the guys marched through ALL of Boyztown. Now that walkway is quite empty.....how sad. Covid has long left all of us but they refuse to bring back what worked. Interesting. Id be happy with any bars having more muscular guys, be it for off or just part of the show or maybe their waiters or perhaps their papasan lol. Of course, if they have muscular guys for offing, that would be ideal. A gym theme bar might be interesting too.2 points

@Min maybe J is confused by your boyfriend-customer sponsorship arrangement. When you still pay him 3k every time you meet him despite giving him 25k every month, the relationship might continue to seem transactional. Your intentions are good (to get him to save up) but he might not have understood it because he compares the arrangement with other guys i.e. V's 30k per month arrangement. It's obvious there is a special relationship that you have formed with J. Thanks for sharing such personal and intimate details about your relationship. Reading it has helped me with understanding my own relationship with my con nuôi.2 points -

Thank you for the trip report. VERY helpful. I will be staying here the next time I go. I was in PP for the first time this year. Just two days in the city en route to Angkor Wat. I didn't expect to ever return, but I met a drop dead gorgeous college student on Grindr and we are talking every day. So I think I will mostly go back for him. I also met so many hot Cambodians in Bangkok and Pattaya...I think it would be worth a second visit to see what fun I can find. So glad you had a great trip!2 points -

And this is what is frustrating about this new Thai government. The previous Thai governments resisted this pressure to conform that was being exerted on them by the OECD/WEF supranational organizations. What originally attracted me to Thailand many years ago was its uniqueness from other countries, as Thailand was never a colony of another nation that imposed its norms and culture onto Thailand. And in my opinion, this is what makes Thailand special and desirable. Now to see this new government to acquiesce to these external pressures - especially in light of the fact that Thailand resisted colonization for thousands of years is very disappointing. Even the Bangkok municipality government has recently started a movement to remove the street vendors and food carts from Bangkok's sidewalks --> because they now decided that Bangkok needs to be like Singapore. Really? This is crazy. These are the things that help to make Bangkok unique and original. To make Bangkok sterile like Singapore, in my opinion, would be a sell out of Thai culture. Why is Thailand suddenly deciding that "external ways" are better than "the Thai way"? It makes me so sad to see all of this happening.2 points -
looks like although greed of boys and management , too loud music and too low AC may undo that love . One of reason I like Space Hair Bar in Phnom Penh is that one can have normal conversation while sitting there , try that in most Bangkok bars.2 points

I remember back in the day when Boyztown in Pattaya was still in its glory with the 9pm red carpet sexy boy march - there was a small gym outside of BoyzBoyzBoyz (BBB) where while waiting for the show to start you could watch the sexy gogo guys "warm up" their muscles for the red carpet march and then inside BBB for the on-the-stage take me home show.1 point -
A reply to some of your queries a-447. I have been very happy with the Sun and Moon. Very comfortable, great security and good gym and pool so I’m a happy bunny. I would not stay here again but that is due to the very busy area it is in so next time, it will be A and P or Rambutan for me. The Hatha Khmer I went to is near A and P but not around the corner. It is on street 18Eo Street 300 and is around the corner from Love Spa. I recommend Hatha Khmer for the massages and quality of guys. My friend has stayed at A and P and has had no problems hooking up with massage guys and staff there. It is ironic that one of the hottest guys in the place who works behind the bar is decidedly straight Hope this has answered your queries. Have a great Christmas in Japan.1 point

I hope it will be similar format to what Dragon Koi is now and that of Space Hair bar in Phnom Penh , just with more hunky boys who are not outstretching hands and lowering briefs at every turn to ask for tips . About the first part, we do not know. Evidently, Luigi's mesmerizing looks have to do with this viral reaction. However, we do not know what would have happened should he was the Hunchback. In my opinion, I think there is enough evidence to think that people would have still empathized with the targeted execution of a representative of greedy capitalist corporations, specially the health care cluster in the US. About the second part, I share your concern. As an educator I can see everyday how we are disintegrating in anomia and amorality. Rather than condemning Luigi, which would be scapegoating, I choose to reflect on how we need radical reforms in our economic systems. The radical immorality of a few making enough money to buy planets, while an overwhelming majority of honest workers cannot pay their rent or feed their children after working 12 hours daily, it is a sure recipe for social disintegration and terrorist actions.1 point -

@durian please realize that effective 01-Jan-2024, Thailand has modified their Territorial Tax Regime and now will make inbound wire transfers into Thailand subject to Assessable Income, which may or may not be subject to Thailand taxation (as per the PIT) if you are a tax resident in a given tax year. Thailand's tax year coincides with the calendar tax year. Furthermore, the definition of tax resident is if you reside in Thailand for more than 180 days in a tax year. On top of the above, this new Thai government is considering to implement a Global Tax Regime (at the behest of the OECD) and to move away from the formerly friendly Territorial Tax Regime. See below article in Thai - but if you are using Google Chrome and you right click on it you can have it translated into English. https://pantip.com/topic/42949323 This article is directly from the source - as per: Ms. Kullaya Tantitemit, Director-General of the (Thai) Revenue Department. In my opinion, if this new Thai government will implement a Global Tax Regime - then it will no longer be a favorable retirement destination.1 point -
