I was listening to the radio news channel on my way to the grocery store the other day. They played a brief blurb from someone whom they described as a "public health expert" (not a public health official, but rather a faculty member of the University of Southern California School of Public Health) who said "The current Covid variant presents a challenge because most infections are asymptomatic." This sounds to me more like the press trying to fan flames hysteria when in reality the news that infections have markedly dropped in severity should be a cause for celebration. Aren't there more important diseases to try to control at this point? This reminds me of a conversation I had with an acquaintance decades ago who lamented the fact that the pediatric AIDS unit at UCLA was closing down--because there were almost no new pediatric cases anymore. Yes, the university did find him a far more productive use of his time. I'd say there needs to be a point when we say "OK. Medical science has done its job (and the virus mutated to a more sustainable form). Time to redirect public health resources to more pressing issues."3 points

Paetongtarn Shinawatra: Thailand’s youngest PM at 37 years old
splinter1949 and 2 others reacted to reader for a topic
From Bangkok Post A group of lawyers and university law lecturers have criticised the Constitutional Court's recent rulings to dissolve the Move Forward Party (MFP) and dismiss Srettha Thavisin as prime minister. The group, comprising 134 law experts, released a statement critical of the court for allegedly overstepping its power, which could potentially undermine the country's system of checks and balances. The statement refers to the two rulings: one made on Aug 7, in which the Constitutional Court ordered the MFP to be disbanded for attempting to subvert the constitutional monarchy and 11 party executives to be banned from politics for ten years. The other was passed on Aug 14 against Mr Srettha for appointing ex-convict Pichit Chuenban as a cabinet minister. The experts said they disagreed with both rulings, which they attributed to the court's interpretation of related laws. This interpretation is inconsistent with the laws' basic principle and could endanger the rule of democracy. The legal experts outlined four reasons to counter the rulings. First, they maintained that the court may have overstretched its authority, which resulted in the MFP being dissolved, its executives facing a political ban, and Mr Srettha being removed from the premiership. They insisted that if the law was applied to curtail a person's rights, it must be done restrictively and cautiously. In the MFP case, the court determined its authority goes so far as covering its judgement of crucial issues such as the party's policy administration and legislative amendment power. In the Srettha case, the court insisted the scope of a prime minister's dishonest and unethical acts extend over their reckless nomination of a person with questionable qualifications, a reference to Mr Pichit, as a cabinet minister. Second, the Constitutional Court did not permit the accused to fully and fairly present evidence and witnesses in their own defence. The court accepted certain pieces of evidence and witnesses in the MFP case. However, the court did not allow the party to testify or counter accusations during the proceedings. Third, by judging the MFP guilty of acting to undermine the constitutional monarchy, the court has expanded its authority beyond its limit and may be deemed to be asserting a role of keeping the lawmakers in check, which obstructs the checks and balances between the legislative, executive and the judicial branches. Disrupted checks and balances could imperil the protection of people's rights and freedom and the independence of lawmakers in doing their duty, according to the statement. Lastly, the experts felt the rulings have dented public confidence, both at home and abroad, in the country's legal system and democratic rule.3 points -

I very much support the views of those who speak of the benefits lone-travel. The one thing I'd add is that it helps enormously if there are plenty of English speakers around. I loved my single-travel in northern Thailand before I met P but I'd have loved to have been able to speak with the locals. So limited was my Thai (it's even worse now) that I couldn't even explain to a shopkeeper on the way up to Doi Inthanon that I desperately (really desperately) needed a ching-chong. My physical actions to describe the agony I was in would have caused my arrest in Bangkok. I found in West and East Africa plenty of English speakers, thanks to British colonialism and the teaching of the language in schools. However when I went in-land, away from tourist areas, it was more difficult. I remember being less successful in Morocco "off the beaten track" where my appalling French encouraged pity. In Palestine, so many people spoke good English that I was able to travel by bus anywhere. And, obviously, everyone had a story to tell and a demand that I repeat it when I arrived home. The children had been taught in school to welcome us, even though my country had betrayed Palestine continually for ninety years. "Welcome to Palestine; you are most welcome here," was a constant. It must be be in some school text-book. Overall, the vulnerability of being alone, strangely enough, was often a bonus in foreign parts. My experience is that wherever you go, you can make friends by being open , willing to listen, interested and courteous. And, it goes without saying, being sensible and following local advice. Here follows my usual banality; "the poorer the people and the more disadvantaged, the warmer the welcome you receive. "2 points -

Choosing to go with T turned out to be a great decision. I'd heard some mixed reviews about him before, but I'm happy to report that my experience has been positive even from my previous trip. After the deed, we caught up and chatted about all sorts of random things. T really enjoys talking about his family, which I was initially wary of, not wanting it to lead to any requests for financial support. But we've exchanged plenty of texts since my last trip, and not once has he asked for anything, so I felt pretty relaxed this time around. He's quite the talker, and he kept going until I eventually drifted off to sleep. We woke up early, both starving, but it was too soon for the hotel breakfast. We decided to wait for the buffet to open while T went out for a smoke. To our surprise, when we went down, the buffet was already set up, and we were told that we could start early, though we'd have to wait if we wanted fresh omelettes. As others have mentioned, the Quarter Saladaeng buffet breakfast was pretty good. T seemed to enjoy it too, and even asked me to take a photo of him with his buffet haul. It was a bit embarrassing, but I went along with it. Back in the room, we rested for a bit before going for round two. When it was time to say goodbye, T reminded me he’d be off the next day for a "happy birthday party" (his phrasing was too cute). I made a mental note to head back to Good Boy the next day—perfect timing to check out numbers 7 or 42 without T giving me puppy eyes from afar. After T left, I treated myself to a couple more hours of sleep before booking an afternoon massage at Ssense. My favorite masseur, Knott, was back on the lineup but wasn’t available, so I went with a guy named Boy. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel any attraction when I saw him. His massage skills were good, but when he asked if I wanted a B2B (body-to-body) massage, I declined. It was still a highly satisfying session massage-wise so I left a tip that matched the quoted amount for no extras. By nightfall, I decided to try my luck at Moonlight. Unfortunately, nothing caught my eye, and I left feeling a bit bored and frustrated. I was so bored only then I realised that most songs they play have the word "moonlight" in it. Moonlight was strike two for me in this trip but Instead of surrendering and retreating to a life of chastity, I went online to see if there were any prospects. For some reason, there weren’t as many African guys on the app as last year. I ended up connecting with a gorgeous guy from Mozambique, who suggested bringing a friend along. I wasn’t feeling particularly adventurous that night, so I declined. We agreed to meet at the Starbucks on Surawong since I prefer people-watching in a café over waiting idly in my hotel room. When he arrived, we spent a good half hour chatting before heading back to the hotel. The session with him was great—I guess I just needed a change to get excited again. He's good looking with a gorgeous body to boot! He's very cheeky and playful in bed which added to the experience. Plus He could really hold a conversation, especially on topics like the political side of Olympics and the upcoming US election. I might be a bit of a sapiosexual because I found myself really drawn to him for that. He left around 1 a.m., and I’m sure I’ll be booking him again.2 points

This is exactly why I prefer to travel alone. It forces me to interact with the locals and other travelers, find solutions for transportation and so on. I can f.ck around as much or as little as I want. But it can also be nice to have a traveling companion with whom you can share impressions and dinners (eating alone in a restaurant is sometimes a bit depressing for me) and with whom you can share room/car rentals (this was the case on the last trip to the southwestern US, for example). But then you need someone you can rely on and both need to be flexible so you can do things independently if both are in the mood to do so.2 points

From Pattaya Mail By Barry Kenyon Thailand offers a multiplicity of long-term visas for women and men well past the first bloom of youth. They include annual extensions of stay, the 5-20 years Elite visa and the 10 years Long Term Residence (LTR), each of which has its own scale of charges with assorted pluses and minuses. None of them allows direct ownership of land by foreigners, nor guarantees a path to permanent residency or citizenship. Purchase of condominiums is allowed but does not generally result in visa concessions. Since January 2024, anyone spending six months or more in the kingdom may be liable to personal income tax on remitted income. Malaysia has had a 5-20 years My Second Home program since 2002 but there have been a succession of changes, including the requirement to purchase and retain a property and associated land (100 percent in their name) in order to spur growth in the local market. Perks include obtaining visas for spouses, parents and children under 34 years. Unlike Thailand, Malaysia imposes the requirement to live in the country for at least three months per year, although a dependant relative can substitute where the visa holder is still of working age. Malaysia is not currently insisting on foreign tax residents paying tax on remitted income from abroad. Cambodia seems to have abandoned an earlier second home campaign, but the Retirement ER visa gives one year which is annually renewable. Retirees aged at least 55 years do not need to provide written proof of status or finances. Property ownership laws are strict and similar to Thailand’s. In theory, Cambodia requires foreign residents to file and pay taxes on their foreign income, but there are few signs of enforcement for this kind of visa. Cambodia allows foreigners to purchase citizenship provided they invest or donate US$300,000, an offer taken up with alacrity by rich Chinese in particular. The Philippines offers a Special Resident Retirement Visa (SRRV) which offers a renewable two-year permanent residence ID card. Those over 35 years must deposit US$50,000 in a Philippine bank (less for pensioners), which can later be used to help buy a condominium unit, and show proof of a monthly income. Remitted cash from sources outside the Philippines is not subject to tax. Foreigners can lease land for 50 years with extensions for 25 years more. The Philippines are unique in the region for granting a notional permanent residency from day one of the SRRV. It follows that the issues for longstay retirees in the region vary country by country. None offers the kind of dual citizenship or second passport which are common in permanent residence visas throughout the Caribbean for instance. Malaysia and the Philippines offer favorable tax conditions for foreign retirees, although Thailand offers a range of tax privileges in the Long Term Residence detail. Property ownership remains problematical across the region, although the purchase of condominiums or long-term leases is common. Use of local nominees to buy property or to conduct business is extremely risky throughout south east Asia. Cambodia probably offers the easiest bureaucratic route to longstay retirees, but the country lacks the kind of infrastructure westerners are used to. There are no sure answers, just individual preferences and priorities.1 point

I must admit ,whether that means I'm weak , is that my last long trip to Thailand I became "lonely" This time my Filipino partner will arrive with me for a week during my 3 weeks I did at times substitute the word "boredom" for lonilessness Your thinking shock 😲 horror how does one become lonely on a trip to Thailand with all those boys ? Long trips or trips where I stay the same room, my weakness seems to be gloomy thoughts or boredom Hard to explain But this trip 3 weeks duration my Filipino friend will come along I will write more into later ,at the moment I'm heading to the gym before I think of an excuse not to go ☺️1 point

MOST infections are asymptomatic. Some are not, probably in those with weakened immune systems, and as such may suffer more severely. There is also the risk that asymptomatic infections mean that tracking the virus is harder, giving it space to mutate into something serious again. That said... the media always have had the tendency to overhype public health threats.1 point

Mpox - showing up again
KeepItReal reacted to reader for a topic
From Bangkok Post The Department of Disease Control said on Wednesday that Thailand may have its first case of a new, more transmissible strain of mpox. The patient had arrived from Africa and the health of 43 passengers seated near him on the plane was being closely monitored. DDC director-general Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn said the patient was a 66-year-old European man who had a residence in Thailand and worked in Africa, where mpox is endemic. He had arrived back in Thailand from Africa at 6pm on Aug 14 on a connecting flight from the Middle East. The following morning, last Thursday, he had a fever and noticed he had a number of small rashes. He quickly went to a hospital for an examination. He was diagnosed with mpox, a viral disease. The initial examination found it was not the previously found Clade 2 strain, which was not easily transmissible. Health officials were awaiting the results of in-depth genetic tests. They would confirm if it was a Clade 1b-type infection. This was a more transmissible strain.1 point -

Not much updates. Otot2 is open and still the most visited sauna. Several gay massage places but none are close to bukit bintang area. Plenty of money boys in grindr or rentmen though, most staying in bukit bintang area. Not privy with bars here though, but i do know few gay friendly ones but again, not near bukit bintang area. Cruising spots, again, not my cup of tea but there are several toilets that are hotspots for cruising. For regular massage by men, you have plenty of option in bukit bintang, but chance of happy ending is unlikely. There are reports of some masseurs happy to go to your hotel for more fun but only if you are regulars and have been tipping quite generously, so for short term tourists, might not be applicable.1 point

One last comment. Taxi and grab prices in phuket is prohibitive to say the least. One way taxi ride from airport to Bangtao hotel is 700 Baht, while my bolt charge on our way back is half that. There is an airport bus u can take for 100 baht that take you through most tourist spot but as usual, if your hotel is not near their path or bus stop, you will need to walk a bit or take a bolt. Still cheaper than using the taxi. Ive asked about private driver with car services as well and was quoted 2.5k per 8 hour. Not a bad option if you plan to explore the main island. Hiring a bike still is the best and cheapest way to explore the island but it isnt the most comfortable and weather might not be permitting too.1 point

And speaking of Melania is like conjuring up Beetlejuice, but she's been MIA since the RNC, and not a peep from the media.... Why arent they bombarding TRUMP with questions about her whereabouts ? IF Kamalas hubby wasnt on the campaign trail with her, Trump, the GOP AND the media would be all over it claiming all sorts of shit. But not a single question to Trump. If thats not obvious preferential treatment for Trump, I dont know what is.... Sure he has cheated on her, and publicly embarrassed and humiliated her, he's a convicted felon, a racist and a buffoon, BUT if your husband is running for the highest office in the country, you might think she would be by his side?. Being that shes NOT, speaks volumes, not only for the state of their marriage, but for the kind of man he is. And the Real tea probably makes Trump look very, very bad, even to a MAGA Moron... By staying MIA its her very public REJECTION of everything he stands for, and that should be obvious even to the dumbest of his dumb cultists, However, Trump did promise us an October surprise...so perhaps she will appear to announce their Divorce, or perhaps he will appear with a new pornstar on his arm and announce SHE is his new wife ?1 point -

From The Nation The new cabinet under Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is still a Pheu Thai-led government and will seamlessly continue ongoing programmes started by former PM Srettha Thavisin, a Pheu Thai Party source said on Monday. Paetongtarn, who was sworn in as 31st PM on Sunday, called a meeting with party executives and strategy teams at Pheu Thai headquarters on Monday, with Srettha also attending the session. Srettha last week was removed as PM by the Constitutional Court’s order, citing a lack of integrity after he had appointed an unqualified person to the Cabinet. The source said the meeting explored the progress of projects that the government under Srettha has carried out in the past year, with focus on flagship campaigns like the digital wallet that aim to stimulate the economy. The source added that Paetongtarn is working to make sure that the scheme’s framework is within the fiscal discipline, and is considering suggestions made by several parties. The meeting discussed risks raised by concerned parties over the 450-billion-baht handout scheme, which include: 1. Legal risks: The scheme could violate the Currency Act of 1958, which stipulates that the campaign must have adequate funds to support it when it starts. 2. Fiscal risks: The loans to fund the scheme could drive public debt per GDP ratio to exceed the limit of 70%, as stipulated by the State Fiscal and Financial Disciplines Act of 2018. 3. Risks of corruption. 4. Risks from lack of system’s readiness, as the scheme will use a new payment platform that links with participating banks via the open loop system, which is a complicated technology. The source added that Pheu Thai is also looking at candidates outside the party to help strengthen its economic team to tackle current economic problems, which are the party’s top priority.1 point

Low season trip to bangkok and phuket 2024
splinter1949 reacted to spoon for a topic
Some afterthoughts - Travelling during low season has its advantages and disadvantages but to me, the positive outweigh the negative by a mile. Yes, its rainy season, some boys might not be around, but so do customers, hence available boys are eager to please. The only time i had to change plan due to rain is during our unplanned extended visit to Beef club. In Phuket, its a good idea to be flexible and choose the day you will do your boat trip wisely. Im lucky enough to have very minor rain during our lunch, but no rain at all the rest of the trip. It was light drizzling during my first full day there, but no umbrella needed and it was raining on my way to airport on our last day in phuket. While in bangkok, low season is quite visible during weekdays, the weekends are still considerably pack. In Phuket however, its crowded with tourists, mainly from western countries. Another plus point, no need to wait/queue or book ahead for popular place like prime massage, beef club or sauna mania. I suppose this also extends to places like DJ station, GOD etc but i havent visited these place to confirm. - Taking another guy from outside thailand for a trip to Thailand has been quite smooth sailing for me. No issue for him to leave Indonesia, transit in Malaysia and entering Thailand. I have prepared him with flight tickets, hotel bookings, as well as some cash for him to show if the immigration ever asked (they never did). There is another reason why i take him for this trip, his birthday is coming up, hence the trip. Although, when he is about to leave thailand, since his flight is to Malaysia, he was asked to show his outgoing flight out of Malaysia during check in. - This trip, Ive met 2 repeat guys (Moonlight J, The one T, from previous trip, 3 new guys (Maha N, Jupiter guy, and Prestige guy) 1 multiple off (Jupiter guy - 2 off) 1 onsen visit (Yunomori), 1 social bar visit (Beef), 4 Prime massages. I havent visited arena, vck, jey spa, good boys and fresh boys this trip.1 point -
Final day - After breakfast, we returned the bike and walk back to our hotel to check out. We took bolt to the airport and arrived at DMK around 3.30 pm. Take a taxi to Hilton Sukhumvit for our last night of the trip. For the price i paid, its definitely a splurge but u get what u paid for. Nice location, close to bts phrom pong, great service, wonderful selection at their breakfast buffet. While location is further away from action, it is close to jey spa, and taxi ride to and from silom is still cheap. Since my guy has never been to bangkok before, I treat him a visit to Mahanakhon. Bought the ticket online while waiting for our flight at the airport, and given a time slot 5pm for the sunset. We stay there until its a bit dark before making our way to icon siam for dinner at their street food place ground floor. Afterward, we went back to our hotel to put our stuff and clean up before heading out for bar visit. While at our hotel, my jupiter guy message me asking about my phuket trip. I told him it was great and im already in bkk. He asked if we can meet tonight. I told him a friend is sleeping with me tonight but Ill go to his bar tonight as it is my last night tonight. Anyway his message makes me think of a possibility of 3some. Its not what i prefer so it is more of me trying to see if my guy is open to it, without ever trying to make it happen. I first asked my guy if he had done 3some before. And he said yes, with some of his fellow MB, servicing one client. I asked further if he will be ok if we take a guy for 3some tonight, and he said he is open but i notice some uneasiness in his voice. I try to find out and he finally said he will only service me and wont do anything with the other guy. I think he is the shy type and prefer 1 on 1 session but willing to do 3some only if the client wants, but he wont do anything else with the other guy. Anyway, im my mind, Im not going to pursue this anyway, just thought its the perfect time to pre-emp him on this possibility especially if my jupiter guy has no off tonight. At least i know his boundary out of this conversation. We went to the bar and arrived slightly closer to 11pm, and the show was already on going. We were seated at the bar stool seats with good view of the stage. And there i saw my jupiter guy, already sitting with customer in the front seat to the left of the stage. I told my guy who is my jupiter guy and he agreed that he is good looking. We stay until the show ended, and i saw the customer is offing my jupiter guy. I feel a bit of relief, no need to worry about 3some anymore hehe. I managed to says hi to my Jupiter guy discreetly just before he went out and slip him a tip. We then return to our hotel for one last night before heading back home. On our last day, managed to get late check out 1pm FOC, and we then head to Prime for our last leg, neck and shoulder massage before heading to airport for our departure.1 point

When I was single, I found the afternoons in Pattaya difficult to fill. Jomtien beach was fine for a couple of hours but no longer than that for me, and the go go didn't start until 2100. There were only two gay massage places, both far away from Boyztown but with only a handful of masseurs available; and no apps in those far-off days, obviously. Even TV was limited, very limited in the sort of hotels I could afford. No mobiles. Nor laptops. Royal Garden was newly-open (two floors of it) and there was some cruising there but I was much too shy; I needed gogo bars. I suppose I was lonely. The only people I knew in Pattaya were "short-time" friends. And of course, that particular tribe only comes out to play after dusk. This was the time I stopped being lonely. So , all I can say now to younger guys is "count your blessings". The internet, the numerous a/c-ed malls. Even TV. Hotels that are probably more comfortable than they were thirty years ago in my price range. Massage guys and willing visitors to hotel rooms are available twenty-four hours a day. No time to be lonely!1 point

Being lonely on your trip
Londoner reacted to bkkmfj2648 for a topic
I am confused. I believe that you wrote in a previous post from a previous trip that you did not like the fact that you brought your Filipino partner with you to Thailand because it was limiting your ability to have fun. Is the purpose of your Filipino partner to fill the empty void that occurs when you might feel lonely ? I am curious because over the years I have had friends who dreaded to feel lonely and could not do anything alone and would often call you to fill their void to feel lonely - I never liked the feeling of being an NPC to fill the role of substituting someone's fear of the void / loneliness - instead of them wanting to genuinely be with you - and not because instead they needed to avoid the fear of the void and loneliness. It made me feel as a place holder because the friend was not willing to discover the source of this fear of the void = to be alone and where it comes from. I love being alone - I recharge when I am alone and I do not fear it. Some of my best vacations have been when I was alone, as it forced me out of my comfort zone and I was challenged to meet new interesting people and to see new exciting places. Often in the past, when I vacationed with friends - we often only hung out together with each other and we never met any new interesting people and these types of vacations were more bland (harder to remember) than those when I was alone.1 point -

I never feel lonely nor bored on any of my many trips as I always find something to do or see, being that I only travel alone I have always found it easy to do things (and without arguments) and on a quiet day I check out the cinemas and after go for a sex filled couple of hours at a massage shop. I usually like to do day trips out of Bangkok as that helps to pass time, Ayutthaya is a favourite, I can enjoy the ruins all day long if need be and if booked on the right tour the river journey back to Bangkok (with buffet lunch) is quite a good time too.1 point
