If you are after ladyboys, go on Grindr in Pattaya. I remember there were more ladyboys than boys. In Bangkok you may have to go to the straight areas (Soi Cowboy/Nana Plaza) as I think there are ladyboy bars there, but I'm not too familiar with that scene. Although in Silom, the bar that is next to Screwboys (Pink Panther maybe?), as I was walking past I had one girl approach me but I said 'I like dick' to which she replied 'I have dick' to which I really had no comeback! That said, over 20 years ago, I did have a similar experience, where a bar on Sukhumvit Soi 23 (Bangkok) told me that their practice was to collect the tip in the bar itself before the boy goes off with me. I thought it strange then, but the bar manager explained it something along these lines: (a) the boy should have no reason to ask for more money at the end of the session, (b) if the boy does not perform, come back to the bar the next evening and let us know; we will not transfer the pre-deposited tip to the boy. In that instance, the boy did well and I had no reason to go back to the back the next evening. But till now, it remained the only time ever that I have encountered such a practice of collecting the tip upfront. So, what I am saying is that this practice of collecting the tip upfront may be rare, but is not unknown. And if the bar is a reputed one (which Circle Pub seems to be), it may be for a good reason - as your own experience has shown.

I am informed on reliable authority (by Thai standards) the bar was closed by the police as 4 staff involved in drugs. Closed for 10 days. Not know date of reopening.

I have found Grindr very good in Bangkok. All the boys looked like their pictures, and performed. I may have been lucky as other members have had disappointments. Can't verify ThaiFriendly. Never used it. Grindr is well used in BKK and Pattaya. 10k is way, way too high. Avoid these, clearly trying to rip you off. Having visited Circle several times and knowing the boss well, I know she would be dismayed by the actions of this new employee. Foreign tourists are VAT-exempt for hotels, in fact for many goods and services, but sometimes the booking system adds it assuming you are a national or dual citizen. I only detected it on a one-night stay in 2023 and flagged it on check-in, as it was itemized in the 3rd party system. Hence, I always checked final receipts because a mistake could have amounted to 3-digit figures for long durations. Nobody could be “accidentally ” charged for it from mid-2020 to end of 2022 because hotel VAT was waived even for nationals over that period. The problem is if you pay the hotel bill upfront through a 3rd party booking system; good luck reversing it because the hotel would likely need to pay it back to you through its coffers and seek reimbursement from the booking company. If you pay directly via a card hold upon check-in the hotel will waive it on the final tally. There is an onerous procedure for applying for VAT reimbursement at the airport upon leaving. As I understand it, goods merchants, say for example you purchase a watch, cannot waive the VAT. This way the country can calculate the ratio of obligatory sales tax to exempt tax by tracking departure reimbursement claims, though I expect most people go through the bother only for larger expenditures or longstay accumulation.

I would also add that if a bar has a significant number of Japanese customers, it will make sense to collect the tip upfront. This is the practice in Japan, and so, Japanese customers would be more comfortable about it because it signals to them that the bar management takes responsibility for the quality of services provided. It's kind of opposite to the situation where a bar says, what happens after you leave the bar is between you and boy (both in terms of service and remuneration) and we wash our hands of it.

I've never been to Siem Reap and it's been years since PNH. I'm working on plans for Oct/Nov Asia trip and wondering if I should include Cambodia....A German friend just came back from Siem Reap and said it wasn't great. He's not into the money scene much and said all there was there ugly massage guys. He's the once that urged me to try out of the way, less touristy places. Is why I went to Surabaya Indonesia, and he was right....the more closeted and fewer sexual outlets/options, the hotter the sex was. This is Thailand (T.I.T.) and rules are meant to be broken. Me? I'll be locked in my room, stocked with Leo Beer. Oh and another VERY important point ---- do not take money, jewellery, passports etc out with you. Pickpockets abound. Everywhere, you will see plastic pouches for sale (about 100 Baht) to keep dry any personal items needed to be kept dry. But they are not thief proof. Finally, have fun.

4000 is on high end and rather in Bangkok , in Pattaya 3000 for long time is generous. Everything above 4000 is extortionate unless you really like the boy and he is not budging but that will be very rare and I'd say try somebody else. The local authorities could choose to stop these fraudulent practices and choose not to do so, I would have to guess because it benefits the local economy at the expense of tourists. This reminds me of the rampant car break-ins on the Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire. The island has wonderful shore diving opportunities, which are ruined due to the near-certainty that any vehicle parked for this purpose will be broken into. Again, local authorities could easily set up police stings, but choose not to. There are probably only a few bad apples. They'd be easy enough to catch (and are probably well-known to the local police in any case).

Well, if authorities were serious about stopping the practice, the way to do it is not to try to burden foreign passengers by asking them to fill forms in the hope someone will do something about it after they've left the country sometime. The way to do it is to hire undercover cops and arrest those who overcharge, fine them, and suspend their licences by a month for the first offense, much longer for 2nd offenses. Word will get around. Not that complicated.

Now I'm in the middle of trying to make a decision to go to Bogota or Santo Domingo.....was in Bogota last year haven't been to SDQ in AGES. My good friend said if I go to Colombia, he'd try to go or I go alone to Santo Domingo....decisions, decisions. I get industry rates at Hilton branded hotels....in SDQ they're about 15 mins outside of the colonial zone in BOG- located all over.... This is for the end of April.. Edit: I couldn't decide, so I'm going to both places and threw in a night in Panama for good luck!
