Progressive success in November elections in the U.S.
khaolakguy and 4 others reacted to Marc in Calif for a topic
Democrats, liberals, progressives -- all had great success in the elections on Tuesday, 8 November. đ The Biggest Loser was Drumpf himself, as the causes and candidates he supported went down to ignominious defeat. Before I start discussing all of the big wins, let me just post the following report from my favorite columnist: OHIO (The Borowitz Report) Irate Republican officials in Ohio have been crying foul over Tuesday nightâs election results, claiming that there were âwidespread casesâ of women voting across the state. Harland Dorrinson, a G.O.P. operative in Lake County, said that he had âeyewitness accountsâ of âswarms of womenâ standing in long lines outside of polling places. âMany of our poll workers spotted women going into voting booths and literally casting votes,â he said. âThese were not isolated incidents.â Dorrinson said the ânightmare scenarioâ that unfolded on Tuesday has dire implications for both Ohio and the nation. âThere is every indication that women meddled in this election,â he said. âWhatâs to stop them from doing it again in 2024?â5 points -

Obviously, no one can deny climate change. However, your post seems to imply that the issue is "too complex" to pin this change on human activity. I'm not a climate scientist. That being said, virtually all those who are climate scientists seem fairly convinced that human activity, fossil fuels in particular, are the prime cause of the climate change we're all seeing. Unless you've been educated and trained to study this issue, I feel it's the height of arrogance to claim you know better than the actual scientists in this field, thereby pronouncing the issue as being "too complex" to pin to human activity. I wonder where it is that you could live that you used to, but no longer need to use air conditioning. That being said, your personal experience should not be relevant regarding an issue which has been well-studied by scientists around the globe. https://news.cornell.edu/stories/2021/10/more-999-studies-agree-humans-caused-climate-change "More than 99.9% of peer-reviewed scientific papers agree that climate change is mainly caused by humans, according to a new survey of 88,125 climate-related studies. From Thai PBS World Four former police officers attached to Bangkokâs Huai Kwang police station were sentenced to five years in prison today by the Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases. They were found guilty of malfeasance in office and corruption for demanding bribes from three Taiwanese tourists in exchange for dropping charges against them. The four were also ordered to return Bt27,000 bribery to the tourists. Two other officers from the same police station were acquitted by the court, due to insufficient evidence. The extortion, which took place on the night of January 5 in front of the Chinese embassy in Huai Khwang, was widely reported in Taiwanese media because one of the tourists is an actress. They were riding in a taxi, which was stopped for a search by a group of six Huai Khwang police officers, manning a checkpoint in front of the Chinese embassy. Three electronic cigarettes were found in their possession and only one of them was found to be carrying a passport. The trio were charged by the police for illegal possession of electronic cigarettes and two of them faced an additional charge for not carrying their passports. The police officers told them, however, that if they didnât want to be taken to Huai Khwang police station, and face the prospect of being held in custody for 2-3 days, they must pay 27,000 baht to them and the charges would be dropped. A friend of the tourists, also Taiwanese, who was a prosecution witness, paid the police as demanded and the tourists were released. The six police officers were initially transferred to the operations centre of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, pending the outcome of a disciplinary investigation, which resulted in their dismissal from police service and prosecution.2 points

Based on my experiences in Silom an Saphan Kwai, crossing main streets has become easier over the past few years. Not only at locations where lights are installed, but in those where crosswalks have been repainted. I cross Surawong several times daily and drivers seem more likely to yield than in the past. I make it a habit of waving to those operators who stop or slow as a gesture of respect. It may be far from perfect but itâs noticeable. From Pattaya News On November 7th, 2023, Mr. Ekwaranyu Amrapan, the spokesman for Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, publicly stated that Bangkok has taken steps to improve and install traffic lights for pedestrian crossings with a total of 2,850 locations. The installation of traffic lights for crosswalks has two modes including pelican crossings which will be installed in lesser pedestrian areas or a road with traffic congestion, and another mode puffin crossings which will be installed in crowded pedestrian areas such as schools or hospitals. Furthermore, in 2024, there are maintenance plans for crosswalks by repainting them with more bright colors and cleaning the crosswalks with high-pressure water. Bangkok has taken proactive measures to continuously improve the safety of pedestrians. It may seem insignificant but it comes with great benefits, said Ekwaranyu.2 points

This was clearly an antiemetic statement by a member who earlier this week falsely accused another member of committing a sex crime in a trip report. October 2023 Trip Report - Bangkok and Pattaya Department of Agriculture said: âAre you really so pathetically desperate that you need to paw away at a boy who is giving you a massage in a legitimate massage place? If that is what you wanted, you should have gone to the places that offer those services one hundred feet away. Why go and sexually assault a boy who has chosen to work at a legitimate massage parlour and trained to do so? At a bare minimum, your behaviour would mark you out a sex pest in the West; more likely it would have led to a police report and you, rightly, being detained for sexual assault. It's a shame that people like you think that you have the licence to act like an animal when in Thailand simply because a boy may choose to avoid causing a scene in order not to jeapordise his job.â There were absolutely no grounds for the above attack. It is viscous in nature. If Department of Agriculture wanted identify the nationality in the case of the museum owner, he would have said Israeli. He is clearly making a statement about religious affiliation that has nothing whatsoever to do with the post.2 points -
With respect, I think it is not an overreaction. A Bhutanese is the national of a country. A German owning a restaurant is similarly the national of a country. Being Jewish is basically a religious identity. Would you say the Catholic who ran the Museum? Somehow I doubt it.2 points

A statement that starts with "The Jew who owned the museum... " is typical of anti-Semitic writing. It connects religion and business/money in a common trope that has been associated with Jewish people since the Middle Ages in Europe. No explanation or clarification can excuse this type of statement. But I'm eager to see the reactions and responses to my comment. We can only raise our eyebrows. đ2 points -

Walking the streets of Silom daily, the absence of groups of Chinese is noticeable. However, that doesnât mean thereâs an overall dearth of tourists. Iâve never seen Thaniya more crowded. The Patpong Night Market is vibrant and pedestrian traffic most nights is strong. Observing the passers by on Patpong 2 last night from Hot Male beer bar with a fellow board member, it was evident that tourists from elsewhere in Asia and western countries are picking up some of the slack. Hotel bookings are strong and restaurants and pubs are doing well. Soi 4 is doing a robust business on most nights and the massage shops are holding their own despite stiff competition. Venues like 76 Garage are obviously hurting because they owed their success to tourists from a single source who travel in groups. Individual Chinese are still finding their way to Bangkok but arenât necessarily drawn to those attractions. The Chinese trade will be slower to materialize because of some of the reasons cited in the OP but also due to Chinaâs current economic woes. Meanwhile, Thailand seems destined to prosper because it simply has so much to offer to all.2 points

Both EK and MC have valid points, although EK exaggerates more than MC does. While the Rafah crossing is an exception to the Israeli strangulation of Palestinian movement, Palestinians are, for all intents and purposes, prisoners in their own land. Few can leave. They would even need a difficult-to-obtain visa to so much as enter Egypt. Palestinians are even severely restricted in their movements WITHIN their territories in the West Bank: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestinian_freedom_of_movement EK does have a point that Hamas leaders steal from their own people, and are, to a very large extent, responsible for the misery of innocent Palestinian civilians (including most of their deaths). It is, indeed, shameful in the way in which Hamas sacrifices its own people in order to promote itself, all the while cynically blaming the Israelis. That being said, the Israeli government has gone out of its way to harass and provoke the Palestinians at every turn, including within West Bank territories which should not be under their jurisdiction. I believe that the US and its allies should have made it clear long ago that receipt of aid would be contingent on fruitful dialog, and, especially, with removal of the unnecessary Israeli encroachments/provocations into Palestinian (former Jordanian) lands.1 point -

Israel And The Palestinians: A Nightmare In Desperate Search Of A Solution
Ruthrieston reacted to PeterRS for a topic
I would add "massively simplistic". I have repeatedly said you cannot regard the present/recent ghastly war without looking back at history, a position I know some other posters do not agree with. The treatment Israel, especially under its ultra right wing governments, has meted out to the mass of the Palestinians has been largely disgraceful. It continues to annex Arab lands to build their largely orthodox settlements despite this being against several UN resolutions. And who made the decision to prop up Hamas over more than a decade? Israel! Since its inception in 2006, the UNHCR has adopted virtually as many resolutions against Israel's actions on issues regarding the Palestinians as in the rest of the world combined. Israel has been no saint! The civilised world sees a two-state solution. Israel's politicians have stated this time and time again; yet their actions have proved the opposite. Yasser Arafat could have been a party to peace which seemed very close at the Camp David Accords, but pulled out because those present all agree that his aim was in fact a one-state solution. Now with other actors taking part in the conflict, notably the US and Iran, with Netanyahu's position finally extremely vulnerable and much of the world against what israel is doing in Gaza, Israel is in arguably the most difficult situation it has faced for decades. That is not to condone in any way the terror and outright murder of Israeli men, women and children by Palestinian terrorists. It is merely facing facts. It's really hard to see how Israel gets out of this mess without the war extending beyond the borders of Israel and Gaza.1 point -

FYI... Israel controls ALL access to Gaza, including its borders, airspace, and territorial waters. That means access by people and access to materials, food, medicine, and equipment. So yeah, Israel is still "occupying" Gaza. An occupation does NOT always require settlers, government offices and agencies, or businesses. If a region doesn't fully control its borders, airspace, and territorial waters, it's occupied. Your description is the same kind of "phony narrative" that Putin's lackeys and supporters repeat when they claim that "Putin is not a member of -- and doesn't control -- the United Russia party." We all know that even though Putin might not be an "official member," it's HIS party because it automatically does his bidding -- he heads its list of candidates and he runs as a United Russia candidate. So it's definitely PUTIN'S PARTY in the regular sense of possession and association. đđđ1 point -

Not exactly true. Saying that "it steadfastly declined to acknowledge the existence of Patpongâs all-male bars scene" suggest a deliberate refusal to acknowledge the gay presence in Patpong, which is far from the case. The museum dealt only with Patpong proper, i.e. Patpong 1 and 2, and not with the wider "Patpong" entertainment zone, which would also include Soi 2, Soi 4, Soi 6 and Soi Twilight. There have been gay bars in Patpong proper since the 1980s, but there was never a cluster of them in one place until 2019 - and since the museum did not tell the history of every individual Patpong bar, except for the really iconic ones like Grand Prix and Superstar, there was no reason to expect mention of any of the gay bars. That was actually somewhat amusing considering that the Patpong Museum site was once home to a gay bar. The Jew who owned the museum had previously owned the Bua Luang group of bars in the 90s that was very gay friendly, even having host nights and advertising in gay magazines. He was also, reportedly, looking at opening a male bar before the pandemic struck, in addition to that string of lady bars that he had on Patpong 2. Of course, that is not going to happen now that he is rotting in jail in Phuket. Also, if you look at the second picture of the model of Patpong 2 that you have posted above, it does include the gay bars that moved there in 2019. The signs for Dream Boy, Lucky Boys and Fresh Boys are all clearly visible. The bars only moved there in 2019, after the model had already been built but it was updated to include the gay bars that had already moved to Patpong 2 before the model was put on display. Hot Male was the last to move and that was after the model had been updated and therefore is not included in that display. They did not update it again after that because they had plans to replace or upgrade the entire thing with a more elaborate version that would include the actual interiors of all the bars. Then came the pandemic and then the owner's arrest earlier this year before any of that could happen. The entire thing was a work in progress that has been cut short and the lack of information about gay bars in Patpong was not discrimination, it was just bad timing. I repost that picture of the model, including the gay bars.1 point -
From Thai PBS World Remains of seven more Thais killed in Israel due back on Thursday Seven more sets of remains of Thais killed in Israel are scheduled to arrive at Suvarnabhumi international airport on Thursday afternoon, according to the Thai Foreign Ministry. A total of 34 Thai nationals died during or since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7th and 24 are being held captive by militant groups in Gaza. Four others are in hospital. Foreign Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara said yesterday that the 24 hostages are being held by 2 or 3 militant groups, including Hamas, in various locations. If the Thai hostages are released, he said that they must be set free through a safe corridor at the Egyptian border. The Thai government has already informed the Egyptian government and Thai officials should be allowed to accompany the hostages from Gaza. From his talks with his counterparts in Qatar, Iran and Egypt last week, Parnpree said it is very possible that Thai hostages will be the first group to be released. He also said that there are other groups of Thai people who have been trying to secure the release of the Thai hostages, using their own connections. One of these groups is associated with House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, a Thai Muslim. They approached Iran, which is believed to have influence over Hamas.1 point

I believe you are correct in writing our climate does change over the centuries. And there have been periods of global warming along with something like 5 separate ice ages. The geology of every continent on our planet is marked by the last ice age and its retreat, rather as present-day glaciers are not pure white but marked by trails of black and brown being the rocks underneath them being ground up like powder as the ice makes its slow journey downwards. But I find it very hard to believe that there are still people who deny the earth is presently undergoing some very major changes. Call it evolution if you will; most call it climate change. According to a recent Report - The climate crisis has pushed the planetâs stores of ice to a widespread collapse that was âunthinkable just a decade agoâ, with Arctic sea ice certain to vanish in summers and ruinous sea level rise from melting glaciers now already in motion, a major new report has warned . . . The âterminalâ loss of sea ice from the Arctic during summers could arrive within a decade and now cannot be avoided, it adds . . . âThereâs nothing we can do about that now. Weâve just screwed up and let the system warm too much already,â said Julie Brigham-Grette, a scientist at University of Massachusetts Amherst and report co-author, about the sea ice. âThat milestone has now passed so the next thing we need to avoid is ice shelf collapses in Antarctica and the further breakdown of the ice systems in Greenland. We canât stuff the genie back into the bottle once they are gone.â . . . Greenlandâs ice loss has already committed around 30cm to sea level rise. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/nov/07/melting-arctic-sea-ice-summer-report Meanwhile, governments appear to be doing very little, if anything. Yet it is clear that places like Florida, London, Bangladesh, Bangkok, Jakarta, the Nile Delta and a whole host of other parts of the planet will become uninhabitable unless governments spend massively like Holland on sea defences. That country spent US$5 billion prior to 1997 and now adds âŹ1 billion per year to keep the sea from its land. Apart from much of tha land being either just above or even below sea level, Holland's defences have held firm against not only rising sea levels but storm surges driving water down the North Sea towards the English Channel. As the Guardian article ends - âRapid decarbonization is absolutely essential, itâs a moral obligation to the future . . . If we donât accept that moral responsibility . . . it will be a human tragedy.â1 point -

I am against Israeli policies towards Palestinians, but strongly believe in Israelâs right to exist. Stupidity and brutality of Hamas (much like that of Putinâs regime, in general) played right into Bibiâs and Likudâs right-wing ambitions. "Among the foreigners rescued, 166 Vietnamese nationals have been identified and have been taken to a safe place in the northern area of this country bordering China," the ministry's spokeswoman Pham Thu Hang said at a press meet. Hang said conflicts in northern and other parts of Myanmar, including Kayin state, are hampering efforts to reach and protect Vietnamese citizens. "The Vietnamese embassy in Myanmar is coordinating with authorities in Vietnam, Myanmar as well as those in China on citizen protection plans to help repatriate the citizens as soon as possible. The embassy has also asked the Myanmar authorities to guarantee security and safety for the Vietnamese nationals," Hang said. The ministry recommended that Vietnamese citizens avoid travelling to Shan and Kayin states of Myanmar, while people staying in the two places should make plans to evacuate to a third country or return to Vietnam, she said, adding that Vienamese citizens should follow information from local administrations, the foreign ministry's Consular Department and embassy.0 points

Here's another of my favorite political bloggers -- the Rude Pundit: ___________________________________________________ Democrats Win Just About Everything Everywhere All at Once In last night's absolute ass-reaming of Republicans, Democrats proved that the best strategy is just to be fucking Democrats. That means supporting abortion rights without any of the bullshit equivocating that gives credence to anti-choice arguments. That means calling out the culture war shit for the plain idiocy that it is. And it means that polls don't vote. A few takeaways on very, very good night, addressed directly to the GOP. Hey, dicks, 1. You have pissed off the women of the United States in ways you can't even imagine. The last year has been a sequel to the Dobbs decision sending abortion rights back to the states. Call it "The Revenge of Roe" because women are in warrior mode over protecting their bodily autonomy. And you withering cocks have painted yourself into a corner with the blood of women who have been hurt and killed by the Supreme Court's monstrous decision. Who celebrated the end of Roe? Whose likely presidential candidate proudly proclaims that that he appointed the justices who made it possible? You kept telling women that actions have consequences when it comes to sex. Now look who's finding out after fucking around. And this won't stop and won't slow down. Democratic women are coming for you. 2. Another way you pissed off women and all parents is telling them that they don't have the right to take care of their kids. See, your child getting taught at school that slavery was bad or that gay people exist isn't impinging on your "rights" as parents. You can teach them whatever lies you want at home. What does fuck with the relationship between parents and kids is when you fucking outlaw medical treatment that parents want for their kids, whether it's abortion or transgender care. You pass laws saying what kids can and can't talk about and force them to repress their identities and you are shitting all over parents. That's done. It failed. It failed big time. 3. And Gen Z is coming after you motherfuckers. I love that we finally have a generation that has no reason to believe the moronic myth of the "good" Republican. They grew up with racist attacks on Barack Obama and then watched Donald Trump turn the joint into a plague-ridden hate camp, and they saw Republicans at every level merrily go along with it. They are woke, and your mocking of their wokeness makes you into everything they fucking despise. They have queer friends, they have trans friends, they have friends of different faiths. They watched the George Floyd video and marched in Black Lives Matter protests and then watched as you lied and said they were violent rioters. And then you banned the fucking books they like and are continuing to destroy the climate, which dicks them over for their futures. Goddamn, you are fucked with this generation. You can change. Moderate on abortion. Give up the culture wars. Do shit that shows you understand that science is real. But you're motherfuckers, so you'll likely just try to figure out how to suppress the vote. Okay, I'm done talking to the conservabitches. Lemme end here with a few awesome races beyond abortion rights in Ohio and the Virginia legislature. 1. In Virginia, pre-election, on the long list of things that matter to voters, transgender issues placed dead last. That's not because they want trans people to not have rights. It's because no one fucking cares if people want to do something that harms no one. And then openly trans Danica Roem, already in the state assembly, became the first trans person to win a seat on the state Senate, beating a conservative ex-cop supported by giant loser Gov. Glenn Youngkin. That ex-cop campaigned on banning trans athletes from high school sports. And that wasn't enough to push voters away from Roem. 2. All over the country, school board candidates backed by the savage hatemongers Moms for Liberty lost bigly. The Moms want your kids ignorant, crazy Christian, pregnant with no choice, and hiding their true identities while not allowing them to read any books that have kissing in them. They are just the fucking worst and deserve all the scorn that can be heaped on them like piles of manure. But, man, they lost so bad everywhere. In Iowa, they supported 13 candidates. Only one won. In one district, they just had to get in the top four vote-getters to get a seat. There were 8 candidates, 4 supported by Moms for Liberty. They all fucking lost. So they can fuck off all the way back to whatever crusty old bible they crawled out from under. 3. And in New York, Yusef Salaam, one of the Central Park Five who was imprisoned for a horrendous crime he did not commit, on whom Donald Trump once took out a full-page ad calling for his execution, who was exonerated 2002 after 13 years in confinement, won a seat on the New York City Council. Yeah, that's right. Soon, Salaam will be an elected official and Donald Trump might die behind bars. That's karma in a perfect form. It's okay to feel good today, Democrats. It's okay to ignore those shit polls for Joe Biden (which, c'mon, a year out, who the fuck cares?). It's okay to celebrate that we might just have a future.0 points -
always was. I read somewhere that countries like Germany and Poland had 4 seasons and corresponding climate change happening as early as IX century. Apparently there were wet and dry seasons in what is now India and Bangladesh in V century already.0 points

This is scary

"Everyone"??? You evidently cannot count. I guess that's why I have six (6) positive reactions to my posts on this very subject of Israel occupying Gaza and controlling access. You, on the other hand, have barely one (1) positive reaction to your comments on the same subject of Israeli occupation of Gaza. 6 vs 1 -- makes perfect sense to me! đ-1 points -
Is There An Effective Way To Protest?

I cannot agree with your conclusion. I am not a physician but I come from a family that is almost exclusively members of the medical profession. I agree that giving kids candies basically to shut them up is not always good parenting. But I believe the vast majority of the millions and more marching and protesting about climate change do so because of firm beliefs - not how they were brought up. Thank goodness the younger generation are taking on this issue. It illustrates to me why there should be a maximium age for leaders of countries. That the leading Presidential contenders at present in the USA would be 83 or 79 when taking up office is, in my view, some form of madness! The median age of world leaders is 62-63. If individual workers have to retire aged somewhere between 62 and 67, why should any elected leaders be permitted to continue beyond that age range? The argument will no doubt be they have acquired a wisdom that can be extremely useful. To which I'd say: well them, make them official Presidential advisers, but not the Presidents themselves. Same with judges. The UK has a maximum age of 75. Fair enough. Judges are supposed to have more 'experience' and 'judgement'. At 75, the dreadful, lying, sexual molestor Clarence Thomas would be out in a matter of months. And yes I watched his confirmation hearings when I was working in Tokyo and I saw how Joe Biden stopped witnesses from testifying agsinst him in order to get the nomination approved. In his final 'defence', Thomas was clearly lying and did not answer the charges against him. Yet a man who should never have been near the Supreme Court is now its longest serving and most controversial member. Shame on that system!-1 points
