You are not alone as I hear that quite often. ( When I was working my office was located in heavy Jewish area). I'd say it's pretty normal , not every American support Cuban embargo, not every Russian praises war in Ukraine, there are Italians who hate pasta, Swedish hating heering , republican British and Polish thinking their football team is disgrace. And yes , Arabs who think their militants being bloodthirsty beasts. That doesn't make them own nation's outcasts.3 points -

Trip report October and November

Putting my views into context, ten years ago, after a bad experience with cabin crew in Royal Laurel (mileage upgrade), I stopped flying with EVA having flown with them 23 times LHR-BKK-LHR. With both Air France and Cathay Pacific wanting ridiculous fares for this August I swallowed my pride and flew with them again. Looking at the stats for the last 90 days or so, it does seem that this is a somewhat simplistic analysis by flightstats.com Many of the flights, if not most, were delayed at that awful place Heathrow. To what extent that was the fault of EVA we don't know but I suspect that Heathrow had a lot to do with it. The other interesting feature is a comparison between the scheduled time and the actual average flight time. It's very easy to pad the scheduled time and many airlines do so in a dishonest fashion. British Airways, on internal flights, comes to mind. All EVA had to do was to add 30 minutes to the scheduled time and the problem goes away. They are being more honest than many airlines.3 points -

There are many clinics that cater to LGBTQIA+ health in Bogotá. One of the best known (for gay men) is Clinica Salud Sexual Masculina in Usaquén Cl. 99 #49- 38 Oficina 609, Barrios Unidos, Bogotá, Cundinamarca. They also advertise in some of the local online sites and forums. There is another on Carrera 7 near the Four Seasons hotel that I know about that is a walk-in clinic, but a Google search turned up nothing.2 points

I was born in the same year that Israel was created. We're the same age. I completely ASSURE you that I'm not "uninformed." I've followed Israel and the Middle East since the State of Israel was 10 years old. I know ALL of the issues, wars, attacks, occupations, and UN resolutions. For Israel, the 1967 war had consequences and responsibilites based on international law and treaties. Israel chose not to abide by those consequences and responsibilities. The "uninformed" trope is what know-nothings like you bring out of their closet when they're challenged on one of their cherished topics. It's an excuse -- not a meaningful response. ☺️2 points -

It is easy to find how precise are Russians. For example today on Reuters: "Russia launched a massive drone attack early on Friday, hitting critical infrastructure in the west and south of Ukraine... the biggest drone attack in weeks to target Kharkiv in the northeast, Odesa and Kherson in the south and the region of Lviv on Ukraine's border with Poland in the west." 40+ heavy drones, dozen of X-59 missiles attacked Kharkiv 1 158 485 inhabitants Odesa 1 010 537 inhabitants Kherson 279 131 inhabitants Lviv 717 273 inhabitants Quess how much casualties... zero. But In total Ukraine reported "eight people, including two children, required medical help due to acute stress" Stress. You may compare to massacre which is done by Israel.2 points

Could you please show me any my word where I "pillorying the same"? I just publish points of view from different people. But now I will tell you: for 30 times longer period, on territory 1000 times bigger, there are 7 times less causalities within Ukrainian kids, than in Gaza. In Ukraine are less than 550 causalities within children for almost 2 years on territory more than 50000 sq.km. Israel already kill more than 3400 kids, less than in 3 weeks, on territory 50 sq.km.2 points -

My most memorable were middle of the night , like 3 am " I must go now because I must go to gym at 6 am" or " I must go now because I must help my roommate to move in the morning" or one from last night of last trip " I go to buy something to eat and return in 10 minutes" of course never to return but that did not prevent from cheerful message in the morning ' how are you this morning ?, what you are doing today ?"2 points

The Ageing of Pop
Ruthrieston reacted to PeterRS for a topic
They were my teenage idols, groups whose shelf lives were usually brief. They shone like bright stars only to die as younger ones rose in their place. The Hollies, Marmalade, Herman's Hermits, Cream, The Animals, The Dave Clark Five, The Monkees, Procul Harem . . . the list is long. Many of the songs remain on my favourites list. Setting The Beatles aside, my all-time favourite album remains Procul Harem's Grand Hotel, an amazing collection of fantastic songs with the earthy vocals of Gary Brooker. Some, of course, have lasted the course. Who would have thought that The Beatles would today be launching their final single even though two passed away decades ago. Or that The Rolling Stones would not only have launched a new album which has raced to the No. 1 spot in many countries, the group will continue to tour next year. Mick Jagger is 80, for goodness sake - an age when most of us are sipping our Singhas and enjoying a life of retirement with energy levels much reduced although with a Thai boy sometimes in our beds and thanks to little pills which keep everything functioning as it should! The octogenarian Sir Paul McCartney and near-octogenarian Sir Elton John, who has just completed a multi-year tour of his own, take part on that Stones album. Dionne Warwick whose equally earthy tones led to her being the muse of Burt Bacharach for many years continued well beyond the 1960s and remains a true icon. Moving forward in years, Gloria Gaynor's star shone briefly for a while as a gay icon with I Will Survive and I Am Who I Am, the latter from the iconic gay musical the Jerry Herman/Harvey Fierstein La Cage aux Folles (far better than the later Hollywood movie although nothing could beat the original French one) which I saw twice on Broadway with Gene Barry and the incomparable George Hearn. The start of the disco revolution when I danced along with a gazillion others to Donna Summer, The Village People, The Bee Gees . . . ah! those were the days when music helped in a small way to take our minds off the ravages of AIDS then startng to spread its tentacles around the world. I suppose - unfortunately (well, his music is certainly not my kind of music) - we cannot forget that ever-youthful octogenarian, perhaps even gay although he vociferously denies it, Cliff Richard We will all have our own favourites. I just wonder which young artists now in their 20s and early 30s of today will last anywhere as long. Some in their middle age like Lady Gaga, Madonna and Janet Jackson will always be there, I reckon. Yet quite a few in the younger group are already burned out or taking lengthy breaks for a variety of reasons including Ariana Grande, Selina Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber . . . It's almost as though in this day of social media, that is what can quickly build up a 'star' and unless that star is always up there at the top of the posting lists (I am not on social media and so do not know the correct term!) the fans can just as quickly abandon them. In the 'old' days' we relied on television if we wanted to see the stars and a variety of gossip magazines if we wanted to know a little more about their lives. But then, of course, there were the great songs and great performances. Or is that just the view of an ageing hippie with a hankering for the old days?1 point -
Bangkok adventures, observations and dilemmas

That's a little harsh Marc. According to Wikipedia a flâneur "is an ambivalent figure of urban affluence and modernity, representing the ability to wander detached from society with no other purpose than to be an acute observer of industrialized, contemporary life." Perhaps associated with people who have an interest in art or architecture, but not essential. Historically a flâneur (usually seen as a male figure) was somebody who had a fascination in the "demi-monde", and was particularly interested in wandering about red light districts in Pars and other European cities. A suggested Itinerary But if you want to spread your wings Flaneur, here is an itinerary that enables you to indulge your penchant for being a flaneur, and starts and ends within ten minutes journey from Saladaeng station. Get a Sky train to Siam Station. Have a wander in Siam Square. In the late afternoon/early evening, it should be full of young Thai people shopping and eating. Walk up along the skywalk eastwards, up Rama 1 road, passing the Siam Paragon and Central World Shopping Centre. Pause at the Erawon shrine and watch the crowds making merit. Admire the model elephants many leave. Then continue past Chit Lom skytrain station toward the beginning of Sukhumvit Road. Plenty of vendors to observe and you will start to notice more and more middle-aged western guys in the crowd. Pass under the motorway overpass and you are on Sukhumvit. Wonder up Soi 3 and the Little Arabia” zone, area full of Arabs smoking Shishas and nice Lebanese food, and go as far as a soi 7 and 11 - you will be in the centre of the straight expat and sexpat area with plenty of interesting bars and life to see. Cross the road at Nana station and stroll down Soi 4 (Soi Nana itself) as far as Nana Plaza. Observe the sign under the entrance that proclaims Nana Plaza as as “the worlds largest adult playground.” Go in and see if you agree. Perhaps go to the top level and into one of the ladyboy bars. I’m not interested in ladyboys sexually but they can be fun to talk to, and a lot of them have a very good English. That’s what I call a good evening of playing the flaneur, and at the end of it you can jump on the skytrain at Nana station, and be back in Saladaeng within 10 minutes (don’t forget to change trains at Siam).1 point -

that same way ass is controlling her destiny when lashed. You are right about Israel achievements though but it can't be used as argument by advanced countries to snatch parts of less advanced ones. Moses is also right about aid Israel received but to Israeli's credit at least they did not waste it and have a lot to show for it. It needs to be said though that aid figures are frequently misleading as supposed generosity covers a lot of shopping , often military hardware in the source country. As one person I know , involved in aid in some African countries summarized, "whenever we send aid , our SUV follow". So we are proud about aid our country send to Vanuatu , Gambia or or Belize while in fact sizable beneficiaries are our factories and workers1 point -

They are not prisoners. They control their own destiny. Look at Israel, surrounded by hostile neighbors on all sides, and in 75 years they made the desert bloom. They are one of the world leaders in industry, modern technology, agriculture advancement. Why couldn't the Gazans make their land flourish like Israel did. If Gaza is a prison, the jailers and wardens are Hamas.1 point -

The UN helped to create the State of Israel because it supported both Jews and, specifically, Zionism. But the UN did not plan for or agree to Israel's occupation of -- and settlements in -- the designated Palestinian regions of the state. As you well know, UN resolutions 242 (1967), 338 (1973), 446 (1979), 452 (1979), 465 (1980), 476 (1980), 478 (1980), 1397 (2002), 1515 (2003), and 1850 (2008) have condemned: Acquisition of territory by force Permanent settlements in that territory Altering the demographic composition, character, and status of the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, including, inter alia, the construction and expansion of settlements, transfer of Israeli settlers, confiscation of land, demolition of homes and displacement of Palestinian civilians, in violation of international humanitarian law and relevant resolutions This, I repeat, not anti-Israel and anti-Jewish bias. It's opposition and condemnation of illegal acts taken by the State of Israel since 1967. I am Jewish. I support the State of Israel's right to exist. I contributed money to help establish the State of Israel. But I am NOT anti-Israel and anti-Jewish. I challenge you to prove that I am.1 point -

When I moved into smaller living quarters I gave away a bunch of old vinyl. It was like parting with old books that I’ve always found difficult. As I think back on the artists, first that come to mind is the Eagles, Bellamy Brothers, Don McLean, Beachboys and very likely a handful of some of Peter’s selection. Ashamed to admit I can no longer find the names for the songs I can still hear. No matter what the youngsters say, pop will never be that good again.1 point -

We have all heard that the leaning of the Leaning Tower of Pisa was stabilised back in 2008 when the publlic was told it would remain 'static' for another 200 years. This year marks the 850th year of the laying of its foundation stone. But Italy has several other mediaeval towers, notably the 14 in San Gimignano south of Florence of which the tallest is 54 metres. Now there is another that has got the authorities worried about the rate of decline. Situated in the heart of Bologna in the Piazza di Porta Ravegnana are two tall towers, the 12th century 48 metre-high Garisenda Tower and its neighbour the 97 metre Asinelli Tower. As I saw on a visit 4 years ago they are magnificent. The tall one seems to be fine but the Piazza around them has just been closed for a few years as the smaller now requires attention. It slants at 4 degrees compared to Pisa's 3.9 degrees. The Tower was mentioned in Dante's Divine Comedy and Dickens' Pictures from Italy. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/oct/29/bologna-seals-off-leaning-tower-fears-tilting-too-far1 point

Although we're a bit off topic, since it has been raised I'd like to pose another question: how effective are border walls really for those determined to get to the other side? The world is today witnessing the ghastly murders on both sides of the Israel border with Gaza. I have nowhere seen mentioned the fact that israel spent a great deal of money and warded off another batch of international criticism when it started work on its huge border wall. Already over 400 kms have been completed and work is underway on another 58 kms. As the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported, it is the most complex project israeli defence officials have ever built. The 65 km section separating israel with Gaza is more of a massive iron fence, but it is equipped with cutting edge technology designed to detect any security breach. It also includes an underground barrier and is equipped with hundreds of cameras, radars and sensors. There are guard towers positioned at every 500 feet. Yet the Hamas terrorists still got through with relative ease. According to the Israel Defence Forces, the wall was breached in no less than 29 places. If the state of Israel, always on the front foot when it comes to defending its security, cannot build a secure wall, how effective or therwise is one between the USA and Mexico likely to be?1 point
