Don't put all your faith in statistics. The world's best money managers (Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger) have a combined age of 193 and are still working. If you focus less on when you'll die you'll have more time time focus on how you live. π5 points

While I like Foodland I did not take any offence treating it matter-of-factly. There's no such thing like good or bad food, all comes down to simple fact whether we like it or not. I'm by no means fancy diner, few times in Bangkok acted on recommendations from this forum or member met personally and sometimes I confirmed their findings and sometimes I wondered what the hoopla is all about. It goes other way around too. I once sent our member to no longer existing Oasis restaurant on Suriwong to taste their version of chicken with cashew nuts which to this day I consider the best and his feedback was telling while polite "I must have a bad day". When comes to boys and food my advice is only to watch what they order and make sure they finish it off. It happens often that out of 1000 bill 200 is for mine and rest for theirs and still they are leaving a lot unfinished. That is what I don't like and make sure they get " a look" from me.2 points

I find it curiously reassuring to hear of instances where one of "our" guys shows discernment in matters of cuisine, even if we don't necessarily share his opinion. Vinapu should be gratified. Just as I was when P sent back a dish to the kitchen in a relatively pricey restaurant and had it replaced because it hadn't been cooked to his taste. How things have changed over the decades! A progression from street food in Pattaya Tai to haute cuisine. Well, more or less.2 points -

His story was very probable. As long as they tell up from I don't have any problems , no need even for explanations. Sometimes I do the same " we need to wake up at 6 because I have flight to catch. One of my boys couldn't come before 1 am for his LT assignments. In exchange for living on premises he is required to clean the place 3 nights a week. So they may have valid reasons. Problem is when they all of the sudden come with excuses at 3 am. or as soon as they cum. in story above certainly he liked you or as scott says above (and below ) ...... I have another breakfast story, one of boys soldiered out as agreed till breakfast time but actually skipped it. After I asked he turned to be pervert - he said he doesn't like food at Foodland Patpong. So could save me money that way but I decided to be fair and next time just gave him 100 baht to buy himself something.2 points

It is written. From Thai PBS World Further clemency for Thaksin Convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, like other inmates, will be eligible for further royal clemency on important occasions, out-going Justice Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam told Thai PBS. Thaksinβs eight-year prison term on three convictions has already been reduced from eight to one year, by virtue of a commutation granted by HM the King. Wissanu said that, on important occasions, many well-behaved and severely ill prisoners serving only one year are granted Royal pardons and Thaksin could be one of them. He quickly added, however, that he has no idea whether the Thaksin will be among those granted royal pardons. Meanwhile, a Corrections Department source said that, after serving two-thirds of his one-year jail term, Thaksin might have the remaining term suspended and be conditionally released.1 point

It does seem notable that the PM is doing these appearances to try and win people over. No VIP treatment boarding the plane in Phuket. Visiting the market to talk to the merchants and find out what their issues are. Riding the MRT with commuters. They know that they look terrible right now. I guess it seems inevitable that they will find some way to try and get rid of MFP. The people running the show are short-term thinkers. MFP need to be recruiting and identifying the next crop of leaders. The push for a citizen-led charter rewrite is worth watching. Clearly that's the last thing the generals and powers that be want to happen.1 point -

During my last trip, one of the guy i took told me upfront that he will not be able to eat breakfast with me but will stay me until breakfast time. He told me he owns a gym and need to unlock the gym early in the morning. I was ok with it but in the morning he suddenly says he is ok to eat breakfast with me. During breakfast, i asked about the gym, and he said he asked a friend to open it for him. So boys can also surprised us sometime by staying longer. Rare but very appreciated for sure.1 point -
Lots of passionate comments on here about money boys. I pretty much only met money boys (all on Grindr) when I was in Thailand in May-June 2023 (mainly because I was too lazy to put in an effort) and I will probably meet money boys again during another two week stint in BKK in December 2023.... Out of the several money boys I met, only one or two were not stunning to my eyes (I walk around the streets in BKK in awe of how beautiful most Thai guys are.) Only one of the guys made it obvious that he didn't like me and only that one really FELT like it was a transaction. With each guy we agreed on a price before meeting and they seemed to base that on what we were doing more than the time spent. The guys were all very easy going and a handful stayed for hours chatting in bed afterwards and never asked for extra. I was asked by a few of the guys if i wanted to go out with them at night, but I didn't. I regret not doing that and may do in December if the opportunity presents again. I would never dream of looking down on any of the guys I met, even if two have asked for money since I left Thailand (I didn't send it.) They were perfect for me at the time, most seemed like really nice guys, a few still chat with me on Line as I am learning Thai now and I can see potential friendships into the future, which is great especially if I may one day move to Thailand...1 point

Calling all Brits
Ruthrieston reacted to reader for a topic
From Pattaya Mail British consul reassures Pattaya expats His Majestyβs British embassy consul, Joanne Finnamore-Crorkin who is in charge of welfare work with Brits across Thailand, gave a well-received talk about her work to over 100 members and guests of the Pattaya City Expats Club. She pulled no punches and said she would not offer dishonestly to look into matters that were not the embassyβs concern. For example, the hot topic of British state pensions being frozen in many countries, including Thailand, was a political issue that could be settled only in the British parliament. The consul explained that all initial enquiries to the embassy are now transferred automatically β at local rates β to the London call center whose staff decide which to refer to consular staff in Bangkok. This is a worldwide system and is meant to ensure that all callers, no matter which country they are in, receive the same advice. She gave last June as a typical month: the London center received 823 calls about Thailand and referred many of them to the Bangkok British embassyβs consular section. Joanne emphasized that consular responsibilities have evolved over the last 15 years or so. For example, there are now many more British deaths here as the expat community ages and more cases concerning child welfare than in the past. The other main areas of welfare are hospitalizations, victims of crime including rape, missing and trafficked persons, sentenced prisoners and those awaiting deportation. She said that dealing with these cases was now the priority in consular work. Conversely, there was now less emphasis on notarial and documentary services, although the embassy did issue emergency passports, certification of passports for visa or other purposes and counter-signed affidavits for Brits wishing to marry in Thailand. She noted that applications for British passports and visas are no longer the responsibility of the embassy but are handled by VFS Global. In a busy question and answer session, Joanne confirmed that the embassy was very concerned about Brits with unpaid medical bills and there was a general discussion about the pros and cons of compulsory medical insurance. She also confirmed that consular staff were now in regular contact with city, tourist and immigration police as well as hospitals. A visit to a mortuary was now part of the training. In the afternoon, the consul visited the international law offices adjoining the Jomtien headquarters of Chonburi immigration bureau, led by Dr Jessataporn Bunnag. She met staff responsible for visa advice, training for driving licences and heard about the wide variety of civil and criminal cases being handled by attorneys. She was also introduced to the Foreign Workers Registration Center, housed in the law offices, which is responsible for the paperwork of thousands of guest workers from neighboring countries in Chonburi province. Appointed to her current post almost a year ago, Joanne expects to be Bangkok consul for the next few years. The appointment of a new honorary consul in Pattaya, to replace Bert Elson who has retired, is currently awaiting confirmation from London.1 point -

Living in Cairo as a gay expat
dscrtsldnbi reacted to dgcmcm for a topic
I also lived in Cairo - for three years. Slightly earlier than Bruno. His description of his time there is pretty close to my own experiences and observations. However, Ale4co's question regarding gay dating apps being used to target users is an important reminder to be vigilant when using apps. I met a young Egyptian guy on gaydar and once he trusted me (took several weeks of chatting) we finally met in a large public cafΓ© (his request) where he described at length the trauma of being entrapped by what he insisted was a European tourist who himself had been entrapped by local police. The police attempted to recruit him into the posse of men that were used to set up these types of honey traps. He refused, paid a fine and then was let go. We became friends and used to chat regularly but he was too traumatized to go any further. (He ended up getting a scholarship to a UK uni and has lived in London for years). At the time, I was not able to work out how widespread this practice was but assumed it was used to extort money from Egyptians by certain members/cells in the Cairo police force rather then being an organized campaign to clamp down on 'homosexual' activity. No idea if this still happens. As Bruno suggests, much of the M2M activity is based around pleasure and not really related to identity as such. Generally, sexual categories like gay, bisexual etc are understood as artefacts of (primarily) western cultures. Though at the same time, thanks to the social mediatization/globalization of 'gay identity' I did meet several guys who did indeed 'identify' as gay. Interestingly, for two guys I knew, this identification was refracted through an active/passive, masculine/feminine lens - to be 'gay' was to be passive and feminine - a widespread understanding across the MENA region. On the other hand, I knew a couple of guys who did not relate to this at all. For them, being gay was not just about sexual desire but also aligned to ideas about 'freedom' i.e. from the norms/expectations of family, friends and communities. They could not wait to flee from Egypt and leave behind what they saw as the strictures imposed by an Arabic-Islamic culture(s) that inhibited/repressed their sense of 'self'. At the same time, I also met during my three years, a couple of guys who seemed to have, from my perspective, integrated their beliefs and (so-called) traditional values with their other nocturnal homosocial/homosexual . I ended up living across the Middle East for many years (until COVID hit) and speaking generally, in my experience, this 'integrated' approach seemed to be the norm - particularly in the Gulf states (Saudi especially!).1 point -
