It's hard to find statistics but I expect Cathay Pacific will have to continue to depend more on international transit passengers in the short- to medium-term. Heving twice visited this year, it is noticeable that tourism remains way down on pre-covid levels. Part of this is a result of the severity of the covid restrictions which led some expatriates to leave Hong Kong altogether. Another is the draconian Chinese national security law imposed a couple of years ago which makes criticism of China and its policies a jailable offence. Many Hong Kong Chinese have left for good to take up residency in other countries, especially the UK which has opened its doors to hundreds of thousands of Hong Kong citizens (albeit several decades too late). Just last month the Hong Kong government which is basically appointed by Beijing enacted the extraordinary and in my view disastrous policy of placing a bounty of HK$1 million (US$128,000) per head for the return of several of those who had been student activists. Not even after Tiananmen Square in 1989 did the Beijing government adopt such a policy. Hong Kong has become a different city. Its total population has declined for the third consecutive year. In my view it will continue to depend to an even greater extent on short-haul tourists from China which will do little for Cathay Pacific's bottom line. So the long-haul market will probably concentrate on transit passengers from Canada and the USA - and perhaps some from Europe if fares are competitive - with Thailand and other countries as their final destination.

Day 6 My last day in bangkok =( Well had to checkout by 12pm. Flight was about 8pm, so squeezed in 2 massages. The first at Arena Spa. Wow, can't believe I walked there. Personally, a change of venue doesn't worry me. There may be places where it would be more difficult to select an impartial jury but I have faith in the selection process itself. Once both parties have agreed to a jury, I trust the jury to consider the evidence. I used to arrange long layovers of just about 24 hours in HKG to enjoy the city and a massage on my way home from Asia. But for the reasons you mention I don't expect to ever return. Given the big economic downturn in China is continuing to spiral downwards I'm not sure how many mainland tourists will be able to keep CX afloat. The reports I am seeing say everyone in China is saving as much money as they possibly can so discretionary spending like travel would seem to be one of the first things to stop.

I don't think for a list like this it matters at all what the location is. It's a destination - not a place for a two-week holiday. I adored Esfahan but three or four days is plenty of time to see it. Petra, as @hojacat points out is not more than a 2-day destination. But there are tons of other things to see if you happen to be going to Jordan. Similarly the Torres del Paine National Park is purely nature at its most stunning. You won't find any of the comforts of sights of a big city anywhere near there. But that is no reason not to visit the more so as there are many other sights within a reasonanble distance - as for example the huge Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the few actually advancing in a time of global warming.

One the financial advantages expats have always cited was the overall "value" of moving to Thailand. Another was the relatively tame inflation rate. Now is seems that both are beginning to evaporate. The increases are way out of proportion to inflation and erode value. Hardest hit will be retirees relying on the Elite visa. And if the cops are intent on keeping Chinese and Russian mobsters out, higher prices for the Elite will have the opposite effect. Those are the very visa seekers to whom money poses no problem; they'll be first in the queue. When bar prices are discussed, punters are quick to cite the Thai approach to compensating for slow business cycles: raise prices. Looks like the Elite folks are taking a page from that strategy as they raise the bar going into low season.

There is a website for Thailand Elite Visa Members. Today it states that Siam Legal (presumably one of the law firms permitted to offer the visas) has confirmed that the lowest package from October 1 will be 900,000 baht for 5 years - a 50% increase. But then it says the highest one will be 5 million baht for 20 years (up 150%). I cannot work out why anyone would go for 20 years if they could purchase 4 x 5 years at 3.6 million. Presumably there will be some reason - like not possible toget back to back visas. The site also states these prices were confirmed today by two Thailand Elite staff. So I was lied to yesterday when the membership services manager said nothing had been agreed re the new pricing! Should I have expected anything else! But as @TMax pointed out, it has become a lot more expensive.

Too many bars offering much the same was one of the contributory factors to Sunee's demise. I am sorry to see it being replicated in the JC but even more sorry for the guys who are struggling to make ends meet as they sit in their almost deserted bars. On my last evening in Thailand, I had my nightly wander up and down the soi; there was the cutest guy I'd seen in weeks sitting alone in one of the bars. He gave me a winsome smile. I think JC had a short golden era with a large flow of customers ( mainly because the fading of Sunnee Plaza and Boyz Town becoming too expensive for expats) Which tempted many owners open too much bars , this golden era is finished there are not enough customers to justify so much bars nowadays.

You are very right there Vinapu about the maze of corridors and floors at the Ambiance. A few times I’ve got lost when returning there after a few drinks after climbing the stairs and finding myself unable to locate my room. The only solution was to return to the ground floor and start again taking note of landmarks like the large vase and any room signposts. On another occasion whilst in the room, the phone rang so say that I had a visitor. I told the clerk to send him up, but 10 minutes later the boy from Grindr had not appeared so I had to go searching and found him sat on the stairs, also lost. I think years ago the present hotel would gave been two or even three separate units.

It’d be much easier to get GoogleFi, or if you have certain plans with AT&T, you get free roaming in Latin America, including Brazil. Chili Peppers in São Paulo is a good option. SP has lots of good museums and cultural centers, most of which on Paulista. I stayed at intercon and renaissance. No prob with bringing guys in. They won’t ask if your guest acts normal. I did see once a working girl got stopped for registration.

Thanks for the above suggestions! Day 1 so landed in Suvarnabhumi airport in the afternoon. Immigration was quite fast, probably about 10 minutes or so. Then took a cab to my time and trusted Le Meridien hotel. I love the hotel because its nice and no issues bringing your guest back to the room. Arena Massage I always go here first because its one of the nearest to my hotel. This time I took a grab there instead of walking, although its only less than a km. The demise of Twilight was indeed the end of an era but the makeover of Patpong 2 is the beginning of a new one. What has taken place in less than few months is remarkable by any measure. From Surawong to Foodland, there seems to be something for everyone. And if you can't find it there, you surely will at Moonlight or Soi 4.
