  1. Hey, since this is my first trip to Brazil I thought I'd give a report of what my experience has been like as a newcomer. Started off with a week in São Paulo. Was going to stay at a lovely Airbnb in Consolação but when I got there the owner didn't respond to me when I tried to check in. Ended up having to get Airbnb to refund me and getting a crappy little room at the Ibis Budget Frei Caneca (which was more expensive than the Airbnb), since I knew I wanted to be close to Lagoa. So I went to Lagoa several days. As a first-timer, I was impressed with the number and quality of the guys there. I also felt like it was relatively clean, compared to for example Sauna Thermas in Barcelona. I would post up in the bar reading a book and drinking a beer, enjoyed that they had the glass shower next to the bar. The men there were friendly but not too pushy, which I appreciated. I ended up having 3 programas total at Lagoa. I'm a bottom who prefers big guys with big dicks, and I prefer BB but I didn't bother asking as I assumed most of these guys would not be open to it. All three guys quoted 300 reais, and I didn't negotiate. (I guess that is the going rate in SP, but when I was in Rio they all charged 200.) Funnily enough, the guy I was most attracted to was the bar manager (hot as fuck). It was convenient staying nearby as I could just pop over for an hour or two to see what the crowd was like and have a beer before going out somewhere else. While in SP I also hit up a couple other places. I went to Bar Queen and Hot House, both of which had fun strip shows. I have now learned that in Brazil basically every strip show includes this very bizarre (to me) specific thing where the guys do their striptease, then leave the stage for a drag number or another stripper, and then they come back out with a hardon in underwear, and they walk around the room and have one customer take their underwear off, then they go to the next customer and hand them their underwear to put it back on. They go around the whole room doing that. I thought it was a funny thing the first time I saw it at Bar Queen, but literally every strip show I went to had that. I also found that the same strippers were showing up over and over. I saw the same ones at Bar Queen, Hot House, and Lagoa. Makes sense, if you're doing this as your main gig you're going to do multiple shows a night/week. Since I've seen so many of my favorite Brazilian pornstars show up at Hot House on their social media, I was hoping to get to see some of them. Unfortunately none of them made any appearances while I was there. I also had a session with Rico Marlon at his apartment. He was incredibly hot in person and just the sweetest guy. I saw him out on the street twice in Consolação afterwards and both times he stopped me to say hello. I also went to the SP Eagle twice, where I met and had some fun with an extremely attractive daddy, and to Chili Pepper Hotel, which is one of the nicest bathhouses I've ever been to. Unfortunately I think I had my timing wrong. I went on a thursday evening (bear night) and got there around 8. There weren't a ton of people there. Left around midnight, and I think that might have been when more people were starting to show up. I worked remotely several days, and then explored the city. I did some exploring downtown, and found the Galeria do Rock (a full shopping mall of all streetwear, hip hop, and rock music stores) interesting, but in general this (around Praça República and Sé) is where I felt the least safe while I was in SP. I probably will avoid next time I'm in town. The areas I really did enjoy were along Avenida Paulista, where there are (mostly free) museums on basically every block, and on the weekend they shut the avenue down to cars so it becomes a pedestrian and bikeway, and Pinheiros, which has so many different little shops and restaurants to stumble on. Also worth walking around Parque Ibirapuera, and across the bridge to the Contemporary Art Museum. I did go to Restaurant Spot because of the recommendations on this board, and it was indeed delicious. I mainly used public transit, because I love public transit, and found it safe and pretty easy to navigate. The metro is a bit weird in that if you're not a resident, you can't get a card, so you have to go to the ticket booth and buy individual tickets, which are basically little receipts with QR codes on them. Overall, outside of the República and Sé areas, I felt pretty safe the whole time I was there. It probably helps that I'm a larger guy, and not to be classist, but in general whenever there were a lot of middle-class people around going about their lives, that to me signified that they were choosing to be there and they felt safe. I flew from SP to Rio on Saturday. I took the light rail and metro to my hotel in Copacabana, and my first impression of the city was that it was bizarrely dead. Both on Saturday and Sunday when I was in the downtown area, it felt like I was in a postapocalyptic movie where there was just no one around, and I did feel a bit vulnerable. But once I got to Copacabana it was clear where everyone had gone. I stayed at the Mercure Boutique Rio Copacabana, which was both inexpensive and lovely. Located right on the beach. I didn't try to have guests over to either of my hotels, but I don't think it would have been a problem at either of them. Just walk right on by the front desk to the elevators and scan my card to go up. I went to 117 multiple nights. Usually took the metro there as it's very conveniently located a few minutes' walk from the Gloria station, and in an area that is bustling with locals and feels very safe. The first thing that struck me is that it did feel noticeably dingier than Lagoa. And the second thing that struck me is that several guys whom I'd seen at Lagoa all came up and said hi. I guess a lot of the guys go back and forth between the two. When I first got there (around 5 on a Saturday) I thought it was empty other than the guys hanging out in the front hallway. I had a drink at the inside bar, and then noticed the sign for the smoking bar. Went out there and there were like 25 garotos hanging out out there. I had no idea. 117 definitely had a higher proportion of my type of guys than Lagoa did. In total I had 4 programas there, 2 of which were with the same guy. A tall, bearded Black man with big muscles and tattoos. We had to wait a bit for a room, and he made out with me while we did. One of the best kissers I've ever met. Super great in bed — I did find his dick a little odd, it was big, hard and felt great, but it also felt a little lopsided, like a silicone injection gone wrong maybe? I did go on their big night (Tuesday) and it was indeed packed, but not noticeably more so than Saturday. The staff were very helpful and friendly — at one point my key fell off my strap and got lost, and they took care of it, helped me move my stuff to another locker. My biggest annoyance at 117 was how loud the music was during the drag shows and strip shows. My apple watch immediately notified me it was too loud, and I had to plug my ears, otherwise it was painful. As I sit here typing this the next day I have tinnitus. I also went to Point 202 for their big Monday night. Point is very conveniently located in Copacabana, but compared to Lagoa and 117 it is a shithole. It felt so much dirtier and I felt gross the whole time I was there. Even on their "busy" night it was really dead. There was, however, an incredibly hot, muscular latino guy with a baby face wearing a "massagista" shirt. I asked him for a massage, and for 150 reais I got a long, very legitimate feeling massage, with some sensual elements. He performed it in his underwear, and that combined with the massagista shirt made me think he was not a garoto, but after he finished and I took a look at him I was like "you are incredibly sexy," and his response was "oh do you want to have sex?" I was not expecting that and it threw me off and I said no thanks, but looking back on it he was by far the hottest guy from the whole trip and I should have said yes. I'd planned to go to a dance/sex party called Hole on my last night, but I developed a bit of a cough and decided to stay in. (I brought my own covid tests and have tested negative so far, plus I had covid 2 months ago so it's probably not that.) So I didn't really get a feel for the gay scene in Rio outside of 117 and 202, sadly. The rest of my Rio time included trips back downtown during the week, at which point it was waaaaaaaay busier, to work and go to the Museo do Amanhã, which is very interesting architecturally if not so interesting exhibit-wise. I also checked out the Metropolitan Cathedral, which is very interesting, as well as taking the Bonde de Santa Teresa, which is a nice ride, but not much to do up there. Cristo Redentor was exhausting and IMO not worth the trip. I bought "skip the line" tickets via Viator, and took the Corcovado train up. That was interesting, and then you get to the top and there are SO MANY PEOPLE. The views are great, I'll give it that. But getting back down was a shitshow. The line for the train (which you could not skip on the way back down) went halfway up the stairs to the statue. I'd estimate I waited about an hour to get on a train back down, and by the time I did I had to go back to the hotel and take a nap. I also checked out the Museum of Modern Art (not worth it in my opinion), and walked around Leblon in Ipanema, which is a much nicer area than Copacabana, with lots of shops and restaurants, and where I'd consider staying next time. I'm not much of a beach person, so I just took a lot of walks up and down the sidewalk next to the beaches, stopping for drinks and food at the many beachside bars and restaurants, and peoplewatching. I never actually touched the sand. I had thought about renting a car to go to Abricó Beach, which is a nude beach outside of Rio, but driving in a foreign country seemed unnecessarily stressful so I decided against it. In terms of food, my hotel had a great restaurant in it, Q Ceviche, and I went to O Grego twice because it's open late (12 AM) and was delicious. I did go to Fogo de Chão and the meat was my least favorite part. It just wasn't very flavorful. I much preferred the salad bar, which actually had a tray of pork belly with crackling, which was the best meat by far. Both of my hotels had The Coffee stands nearby, which is very convenient because ordering is done via an iPad which makes it much easier than speaking to a cashier. I found myself going to The Coffee over any other coffee place around the city because of this. One thing that did make an impression on me is how gay Brazil is. I've seen so many gay couples holding hands walking down the street, even outside of gay areas. The first two times I turned on the TV I saw a drag queen and a gay love scene. There are antidiscrimination notices all over, and on the metro there's an ad for a show called Tunnel of Love that has straight and gay couples making out. I didn't realize how openly gay friendly Brazil is, especially with all the terrible things I'd heard from Bolsonaro. And overall, everything here is just so inexpensive. A nice dinner rarely cost me more than $40. I'd spend 3-4 hours drinking at Lagoa or 117 for $30. I had 9 sessions with men, including a pornstar, for the same price as 2 would have been in the US. Ubers cost between $5 and $10, even with surge pricing. Overall, I've had a great trip and I'm excited to come back. Since it's only an hour ahead of east coast time, it's pretty easy for me to work remotely from here, so I think I may plan to come back for a month or so at some point. Let me know if you have any questions!

  3. few dozen terminals accepting major credit cards and making exchange booths before immigration collecting it would help. Even better allowing to pay in advance from home countries or indeed anywhere and having receipt in form of QR code available on demand of immigration officer.

  5. I first saw this at Boyzboyzboyz. All I can say is, the guys probably don't get paid much per ball, as a lot of them couldn't be bothered chasing after them. I think it is yet another cynical way for the bar to get money out of its customers. I thought the whole spectacle was degrading and humiliating. But that's just me.

  6. Day 1-3 Sao Paulo As I disembarked my plane in São Paulo, I took in the fresh air, never realizing that a single breath can fill my lungs with so much oxygen. This city is alive and the greenery scattered across the city are lungs, transporting vitality into every weary traveler into Brazil. My plane arrived at 6 AM. Instead of begging for an early check in at the hotel front desk, I used the Dayuse app and spent $40 on a hotel room at the city center from 9 AM - 6 PM. It was the perfect location because I had many tasks to run today. First matter of the day is to get a sim card. I took an uber to the Frei Caneca Shopping Center, booked via the hotel internet. Once there, if I don’t get a sim card, then I have no way of booking an uber to the hotel! My first stop was Loja Vivo, where two employees claim that their system is down for today but maybe will be up tomorrow. My Portuguese sucks so much that I can’t call them on their bullshit. As the saying goes “immigrants, we get the job done.” I went with plan B, the Claro store. 4 employees were working but none would even acknowledge me. When I finally got their attention, the lady asked if I had a CBF? Surprise Motherfucker!!! I made the effort to get a CBF before coming to Brazil. When I presented her with a print out copy of my CBF card, the lady said it is not good. I don’t understand her reason, again my Portuguese sucks. My heart dropped. I must have looked very sad. One employee took pity on me, she told me to go to the American store on the 3rd floor and buy a sim card and then she could set me up using only my passport. 10r for the sim card and 30r for 12 gig data, a Brazilian phone number, and ability to text. Woot woot, achievement unlocked! Gold Chest appears! To celebrate, 2 starbucks donuts to the lady and none to the other witches. Day 1-3 is filled with exploration, food, and working up the courage to go to Lagoa. I will jump ahead to what y’all want to read in the next update.

  8. A Thai man filed a complaint with the police in Samut Prakarn province near Bangkok yesterday after his boyfriend stole over 200,000 baht of gold accessories. The victim, a 69 year old man named Songchai “Noobird” Maicharoen, allowed reporters from Channel 3 to visit his house to conduct an interview regarding the theft case. The house of the alleged thief’s boyfriend, a 28 year old man named Geng, is located only 50 metres away from Noobird’s home. Noobird revealed that he and Geng had been in a relationship for about six months, and had no idea that Geng had a habit of stealing as he was introverted. On the day of the incident, Geng was at home alone because Noobird visited a neighbour. Upon returning home, he discovered that Geng was already gone, along with his valuable assets. Noobird further disclosed that Geng knew where he kept all his gold accessories. The stolen items included three gold bracelets, one gold necklace, one gold ring, and a watch worth over 200,000 baht. Geng has not returned to his house and blocked Noobird’s phone and social media accounts. Man is heartbroken after boyfriend steals over 200,000 baht of gold accessories | Thaiger (thethaiger.com)

  9. I wish I had 1 baht for every time I've heard similar stories over the years - farang losing fortunes to boys they trusted with their lives. And straight men losing fortunes to girlfriends and even wives. I love it every time I hear a farang say "Not this boy. He's different." Yeah, right . . . Miller: "You don't trust anyone, do you?" 10. Yes Vessey I think you are right. The remaining gogos are now back to pre-Covid in as far as boy’s dress. They are now back to skimpy shorts or even jocks or g-strings so will feel the cold below say 25c. Better to run the ac to suit the boys, perhaps that way Winner will attract more to work there. The choice was limited when I visited a couple of months ago, but I accept things vary night to night and by the hour. The most attractive lads are sometimes offed before 10.00 pm.

  11. Day 6-7 Salvador, Bahia The shift in climate with a mere 2 hour flight surprises me. The humidity and heat surround me as I climb into my uber, it is a ~35 minute ride to my airbnb in the Bohemian neighborhood of Rio Vermelho. The sun has already set and a drizzle has started. I pray for good weather in the coming days. More than any other city, Salvador is the city I wanted to explore and take in. The sunset sets earlier near the equator, therefore by 5:30 PM the sky is dark and the streets are poorly lit. In a series of unfortunate technical issues, the airbnb I booked has terrible internet and the apartment is a dead zone for my cell service. I am also very very hungry. Before coming to Salvador, I was told that Salvador ranked 19th in highest homicide rate in cities around the world. A dilemma emerged, wait for daylight or go looking for food. The stomach won and I started looking for restaurants around my airbnb. In contrast to SP, the streets of Salvador are mostly empty by 6 PM and there are very few businesses on each street. The restaurants that are open, they lock their front doors but will open if you get their attention. After a pizza stick and a hot shower, I tuck in for the night. Most folks here are not interested in a travel vlog, I will skip to my sauna report next update. I do however, want to recommend the Balé Folclórico da Bahia if they visit Salvador, the show starts at 7PM and is well worth the 90r admission. The Bahians are very welcoming people, their smiles are beautiful and inviting, and they are willing to share their feelings and goals in life. In summary, Salvador is a rough gemstone, with the right approach and some curiosity, the city shines beautifully.

  13. Ray Dalio is making some waves with his post on the current state of China-US relationship: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/what-i-think-going-1-china-us-relations-2-other-countries-ray-dalio He is generally quite astute in his assessment of the current state of affairs. However, there is still a bit of head-in-the-sand type of denial-ism. The economic war is already in full steam.

And if they are mailed to you, how do you prevent the possibility of the package being opened if the mail/courier company is suspicious of the content?

  17. The Thai government is clearly in a real bind over how this tax is to be paid and there seems to me to be no even reasonable solution that will avoid a humungous mess. Understandably airlines and travel agents don't want near it because they'd have huge difficulty working out who need not pay. And what about those many millions of us who book online? Cash on arrival is a recipe for utter disaster at the country's main gateway airports. This is all so typical of Thai governments making decisions without first giving any thought to the consequences. In principle I'm not against some way of taxing those who arrive in Thailand having deciding they do won't need travel insurance and then leave hospitals with large unpaid bills. But then I wonder why I as one who lives in Thailand, is fully insured with a Thai insurer and travels about 15 times a year should have to cough up 4,500 baht. Better surely to make it mandatory that incoming travellers are fully covered by travel insurance - although I have no idea how this can be chacked in advance.

  20. Business interests often override the interests of conservative politicians. In Japan, where conservative politicians have ruled since the end of WW2, you can buy a tenga (wanking toy) 24 hours a day at any Don Quijote store. They are all lined up on a shelf and there's always lots of guys perusing the latest colours and models.

  24. While savoring this moment in the cabin, I never doubt that M is very straight and this is a job for him. So when he put me on my back, he propped himself up on his elbow and started grinding his dick on my thigh, it does not surprise me that he took care to avoid our dicks touching. I respect his boundaries and it was still hot for me. I looked down and realized M’s “manageable” dick has grown into something well above average. It was girthy and the last 2 inches curved upward, above all else it was hard af. M asked “fuck yea?” I said “yea” and we both assumed our positions. We started with doggy. M lacks the finesse that O possesses and his dick was a lot harder with a curved tip. I told M to go slow and suave, he did listen but with his size it was still quite uncomfortable for me. Despite the discomfort, I didn’t want him to stop because he looked so incredibly good while fucking, thank god for mirror rooms. Next, I made a novice mistake, I asked to switch positions and got on my back because I thought it might be easier for me. Unknownst to me, on my back , M’s tip will hit all the right places: pain turns into pleasure, and once in a while he will thrust deeply and pleasure becomes painful again. I was in sensory overload, I started moaning like in porn movies thinking perhaps the moaning will offload some of the signals going into my brain. It did but M took it as encouragement, he started going deeper. Fuck We took breaks between him fucking me on my side then going back on my back. At minute 25 I felt beads of sweat forming on our foreheads in this aircon cabin. At minute 30, I gave him a thumbs up and dubbed him: a Machina. At minute 35 I wonder if he really meant 60 min of sex. At minute 40 I couldn't continue anymore and tapped out. I asked M to stop and cum for me, and immediately he came and cummed a lot. I find his ability to come when he wants to be very impressive. We showered, I paid him and asked for his whatsapp, and then we parted ways. Leave the room, I must be grinning hard because the gps outside the corridor jovially tease “muito feliz.” With a skip in my steps, I couldn’t help but answer “sim, muito feliz!” Then I had to go back to the cabin because I forgot my keyring and one of the gp followed me inside. The gp wanted a quickie. I told him “nao obrigado.” I already spent my token for tonight.

  25. Day 5 Lagoa cont M is a bodybuilder with broad shoulders(I love), 10-12% bodyfat(I like), a hairy chest(I love), and emanates manliness (whatever that means but I love it). For me, M stood out because he was the only gp that did not try to solicit my business again after I turned him down last night. His aloofness kept me thinking about him, could this have been a strategy of his? Inside the cabin, M asked if he can “ducha” to wash off the sweat from his workout. As he took off his towel, I saw his soft dick for the first time and thought to myself “good, a manageable size.” After he finished, I told him I will rinse off as well despite already showering before I came but M doesn't know if I had any programs before him. In the well-loved cabin, I want M to know that our bodies are the cleanest things inside. As a reminder, earlier M promised to do everything: deep kissing, 60 minutes of sex, and gozar. In the Sauna, the expectation and reality do not often align. So when M kissed me deeply and with a lot of tongue, it surprised me, the kisses were so good. I started playing with his pecs and he shifted his focus onto my nipples with his mouth while I put my tongue in his ears. Initially, M pulled back a little, I asked him if it was okay, and with his permission I continued. It turned out that M’s neck and ears are his sensitive spots because he kept turning into me and started deep kissing me when he wants me to stop. M put me on my stomach and gently lay a portion of his body weight on me and started to rub his hairy body against my back. He understands his size and would prop himself up with his elbow so he does not crush me. Then out of nowhere, he puts his tongue in my ear and I would like to believe that he thinks I might it because I did to him or he is having his revenge. Savoring the moment, I wrap my arm around his head and played with his hair, his curls are cute.

There are some more tricks for to save money when you are booking via internet: don't use iPhone and Apple computers, don't use Chrome browser, use VPN from less developed country and may additionally save up to 30%. For example: just two different browsers: Opera and Chrome.

  27. Day 5 Lagoa cont Knowing that I only have one token to play per night, I went to Lagoa on Sunday. The crowd was smaller compared to Saturday but it was Karaoke night! I met up with my friend from the previous night and started drinking. I saw many familiar faces from the previous night but they did not initiate as they did the first night. Most boys just nodded and smiled as I walked by them. The neon sign is gone! C was the first guy I considered, he is in his late 20s, wearing black basketball shorts and a matching baseball cap. My friend said that he has not seen C in Lagoa before tonight. One thing I noticed was his cauliflower ears, which indicates to me that he practiced or still does Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or mma (I love). C wanted 300r and 500r with gozar, then went down to 350r. With a “nao obrigado” C and I parted ways. My friend arranged a programa for himself and I decided to look for a guy that I met yesterday. M quoted me 150r last night, I told him I wanted to look around first. Tonight, I found him at the gym area about to bench press some incredible weights. He saw me and smiled but I let him finish his set. He got up after his set and shook my hands. I asked him to give me his price for everything. He said a number but I could not understand, he typed on my phone 120r. So he remembers me from last night…I asked him if it include kissing and penetration, he promises deep kissing with tongue and 60 minutes of fucking. I asked for his price including gozar, with a bit of hesitation, he put in 200r. “Vamos!” My flight is boarding, I will update soon...

  28. The prices I got were between 150r to 200r, that is not including gozar. I do not know the etiquettes about asking for pricing without the intention of getting a room, especially when I got quoted 150r. Reflecting back, I may have offended some boys. I wanted a read on the market before making my decision. Then the universe sent me a guardian angel… I decided to find a good spot at the bar area to watch the traffic. The bar was pretty full. I decided to ask a gentleman if I could sit with him. This turns out to be the best decision I made in a long time. The conversation just flowed, followed by laughter, with bits of wisdom sauna weaved between the lines. I was having a good time, a fucking great time! After asking for my preferences and hearing about my dry spell, my new friend decided to help me to pick a gp for my christening…. O is a very charismatic GP, while still in his street clothes, he greets everyone in the bar area. He is muscular (I like), very lean and solid (I like), he speaks decent English (I like), has body hair (I love), and a big dick (I’m scared). The truth is that I can’t (or don’t know how) to enjoy big dicks and prefer the average size. But we are in Brazil, the box next to the big dick is already checked for you. So if I can get ⅘, I am going to proceed. We discussed the price of 200r for everything including gozar. O offered to start with a massage (not very good), then a body2body rub, then using his hips and small movement, he was able to get inside me without me being uncomfortable. Fucking amazing ability. One thing about hiring a gp with decent English is dirty talk and roleplay. I am not going to repeat what was said without my face burning up but it was filthy, slutty, and fun. He came twice for me and I didn’t cum. Part of the sauna education is learning to stand your ground. After the showers comes the payment part. In my head, I have already decided to tip O 50r for a total of 250r. Before I opened my mouth and my wallet, O said he wanted 400r, 200r for the massage and everything else was extra. Long story short, he went down from 400r to 300r to accepting 250r. While the situation may be awkward, I am not bothered by it because O has his reasons and I am not going to fault him for trying. Afterall, I have a neon sign on top of my head.

  29. Day 4 Lagoa If not now, then when? I am not as brave as many people on the forum. However, after I take the first step I usually find my balance afterward. It was a Saturday night, one of the best days to visit Lagoa, when I decided to take my first step. I find the Paulistas take care of their bodies and have very good hygiene. While the sex is transactional, I think the boys deserve the same respect from tourists as locals give them. (Who knows, maybe I am just bullshitting) I decided to shower, scrub, shave, lotion myself, douche, and put on my favorite cologne. Then I am called the uber. When I got into the car, after the “Boa noite”s, the driver asked “voce va sauna?” With a smile, I exclaimed “Sim!” Tonight, I am gonna get what I want, who I want, and when I want. Entering Lagoa for the first time, I must have a neon sign that I can’t see on top of my head that reads “$newbie$” Immediately, I was swept up by a garoto who took it upon himself to show me the place and what to do: locker room to put your valuables in, change into slippers, the bar, the dry/hot saunas, the adult video areas, the gym, the bar, and etc. Afterward, he grabbed me and stuck his tongue inside my mouth and asked me to get a room with him. My Mamas (you guys) raised me to know better, I thank you and gave him a 20r tip and told him I want to explore the area first. He said he wants a 50r, I told him no, then the baby started to pout but took the 20r (I remedied the situation later by buying him a drink , he is a good guy). Somehow, every boy knows that I am a newbie. I was sniffed, kissed, grabbed by arm and ass, asked to touch their piece (contrary to the second night, I was left alone). Going up and down the stairs and exploring many rooms, I was a kid in a candy store and the store had all the flavors of the rainbow.

  30. Another observation was how interesting it was to watch all these (ostensibly) straight guys hanging out, watching a soccer match, and just fluffing their dicks. At Lagoa you could tell which garotos were gay or straight by which tv they parked in front of to fluff themselves. (There’s a straight porn TV on the second floor and a gay porn one on the third.)

  31. I view the security issue differently, or think I understand the concerns ... as a USA born / resident but someone who has lived in several countries and traveled to many others. "exaggerate fears and paranoia" and "blind to the ridiculously violent culture they are immersed in" might themselves be exaggerations. In the cities we come from in our own countries - each of us - we know a lot more than we know about places we haven't been to before. We know, at home (most of us), where troubled spots are, where to stay away from, etc. For many years I lived in Chicago, but the areas I lived in were not insecure. Although the crime rate in Chicago is less than many other USA cities, there are neighborhoods / sections of the city where rates of crime and violence and deaths are dangerously high - and we know to stay from them. I would read of reports of tourists turning off highways into the "bad" neighborhoods looking for a gas station, a grocery store, or someplace to eat. Some were badly victimized. The challenge when we travel away from familiar areas is we don't know what we don't know. The personal safety / security concerns regarding Rio de Janeiro are well documented ... and reinforced by local residents cautioning tourists, hotel staff cautioning tourists, travel blogs and forums reporting on incidents of crime and harm and local residents cautioning visitors walking in sections of Rio ... to be careful. Some years ago travel forums for Rio saw many reports, first-hand witness reports, of individuals waiting for the tram up to Santa Teresa being mugged, robbed and badly injured by gangs. Real, not imagined. I rode the tram up to Corcovado, and the tram was protected by an armed security guard because gangs had been hopping aboard along the way and robbing tourists / passengers. My first trip to Rio, with an elderly friend of mine, we were waiting for a bus on Av. Nossa Sra. de Copacabana at Rua Siqueria Campos, not far from Hotel Atlantico Copacabana, when three or four young men approached, as the bus approached, and proceeded to beat-up a man waiting for the same bus, standing 10 ft. away from us. Real, not imagined. On another visit, I was on a chair under an umbrella at the Impanema beach when a gang from a favela tore through that area hitting people sitting nearby with clubs robbing them of valuables. Yet another visit, a local resident approached me when I was walking in Centro and in pretty good English cautioned me against street violence and asked me why I was walking there. Real, not imagined. My concerns have not been exaggerated and though I attempt to be as cautious as I can ... I continue to wander about with an intuition I think I've developed ... I hope I've developed! I lived in Mexico for 6 years, and when there I've been the victim of multiple crimes: drugged in a bar and all of my valuables robbed from my apartment, my apartment(s) robbed at other times, mugged on the street multiple times. I thought / think I know the city and "dangerous" areas ...but I was victimized nonetheless. After having moved back to the USA, I still return to Mexico City once or twice yearly. I don't know how long you've lived in the USA, but the comment "I feel like a White guy feels in the US, while many Americans here experience what people of color feel in US streets: targeted." lacks context. To the best of my knowledge and observation, crimes against persons of color are perpetrated by persons of color. White people aren't killing Blacks on the South Side of Chicago, Blacks are killing Blacks. On the West Side of Chicago, Latinos are killing Latinos ... not "White" non-Latinos. Drug cartels / gangs and the obscene availability of firearms are principal culprits responsible for the violence and carnage. None of us should NOT be concerned for our safety when traveling to unfamiliar places. Gay men oftentimes place ourselves in harms way more than some other individuals. Thank you for listening / reading.
