I first saw this at Boyzboyzboyz. All I can say is, the guys probably don't get paid much per ball, as a lot of them couldn't be bothered chasing after them. I think it is yet another cynical way for the bar to get money out of its customers. I thought the whole spectacle was degrading and humiliating. But that's just me.

Last Saturday I did a little tour so brief notes: Smile Bar, a new pop up at the top of the Jomtien Complex street. Leo 80, 150bt including the 70bt lad tip, if you want to buy anyone a drink. The lads are good fun there to chat to. Got the 10 bt songthaew and walked then to Winner Bar in Sunee. Walking seemed safe enough but I know the area so I don't worry about getting lost. 9 boys, 6 customers; good, considering what I'd read. Cute lads who smile. I was welcomed by a man I presume to be the owner. That afternoon I spoke to the man who runs the non gay bar across the road. He said he had done that for more than 40 years. There is a menu of prices for offing the men so ask to see it if you want to. No surprises in it. I can't recall if I took anyone off that night but I have off'd three men from there who were fine. From Pattaya News PHOTO: พัทยา โฟกัส Pattaya Movie on The Beach is set to make a big splash from June 14th to the 17th, according to mayor Poramase Ngampiches. The aim of the event is to transform Pattaya City into a ‘city of movies’ by 2027 as well as to stimulate tourism in June. The event will feature an outdoor cinema where attendees can watch movies on the breezy beach of Pattaya over a four-day period . Two movies will be played each day in multiple languages, with films focusing on things in Pattaya. Selfie booths and food stalls will also be set up. Entry will reportedly be free. Pattaya is also looking at organizing a proper film festival in the future to become a centerpiece of arts, culture, and entertainment according to the mayor.

The prices I got were between 150r to 200r, that is not including gozar. Hey, since this is my first trip to Brazil I thought I'd give a report of what my experience has been like as a newcomer. Started off with a week in São Paulo. Was going to stay at a lovely Airbnb in Consolação but when I got there the owner didn't respond to me when I tried to check in. Ended up having to get Airbnb to refund me and getting a crappy little room at the Ibis Budget Frei Caneca (which was more expensive than the Airbnb), since I knew I wanted to be close to Lagoa. So I went to Lagoa several days. As a first-timer, I was impressed with the number and quality of the guys there. I also felt like it was relatively clean, compared to for example Sauna Thermas in Barcelona. I would post up in the bar reading a book and drinking a beer, enjoyed that they had the glass shower next to the bar. The men there were friendly but not too pushy, which I appreciated. I ended up having 3 programas total at Lagoa. I'm a bottom who prefers big guys with big dicks, and I prefer BB but I didn't bother asking as I assumed most of these guys would not be open to it. All three guys quoted 300 reais, and I didn't negotiate. (I guess that is the going rate in SP, but when I was in Rio they all charged 200.) I have now learned that in Brazil basically every strip show includes this very bizarre (to me) specific thing where the guys do their striptease, then leave the stage for a drag number or another stripper, and then they come back out with a hardon in underwear, and they walk around the room and have one customer take their underwear off, then they go to the next customer and hand them their underwear to put it back on. They go around the whole room doing that. I thought it was a funny thing the first time I saw it at Bar Queen, but literally every strip show I went to had that. I also found that the same strippers were showing up over and over. I saw the same ones at Bar Queen, Hot House, and Lagoa. Makes sense, if you're doing this as your main gig you're going to do multiple shows a night/week. Since I've seen so many of my favorite Brazilian pornstars show up at Hot House on their social media, I was hoping to get to see some of them. The areas I really did enjoy were along Avenida Paulista, where there are (mostly free) museums on basically every block, and on the weekend they shut the avenue down to cars so it becomes a pedestrian and bikeway, and Pinheiros, which has so many different little shops and restaurants to stumble on. Also worth walking around Parque Ibirapuera, and across the bridge to the Contemporary Art Museum. I did go to Restaurant Spot because of the recommendations on this board, and it was indeed delicious. I mainly used public transit, because I love public transit, and found it safe and pretty easy to navigate. The metro is a bit weird in that if you're not a resident, you can't get a card, so you have to go to the ticket booth and buy individual tickets, which are basically little receipts with QR codes on them. Overall, outside of the República and Sé areas, I felt pretty safe the whole time I was there. It probably helps that I'm a larger guy, and not to be classist, but in general whenever there were a lot of middle-class people around going about their lives, that to me signified that they were choosing to be there and they felt safe. I flew from SP to Rio on Saturday. I took the light rail and metro to my hotel in Copacabana, and my first impression of the city was that it was bizarrely dead. Both on Saturday and Sunday when I was in the downtown area, it felt like I was in a postapocalyptic movie where there was just no one around, and I did feel a bit vulnerable. But once I got to Copacabana it was clear where everyone had gone. I stayed at the Mercure Boutique Rio Copacabana, which was both inexpensive and lovely. Located right on the beach. I didn't try to have guests over to either of my hotels, but I don't think it would have been a problem at either of them. Just walk right on by the front desk to the elevators and scan my card to go up. I went to 117 multiple nights. Usually took the metro there as it's very conveniently located a few minutes' walk from the Gloria station, and in an area that is bustling with locals and feels very safe. The first thing that struck me is that it did feel noticeably dingier than Lagoa. And the second thing that struck me is that several guys whom I'd seen at Lagoa all came up and said hi. I guess a lot of the guys go back and forth between the two. When I first got there (around 5 on a Saturday) I thought it was empty other than the guys hanging out in the front hallway. I had a drink at the inside bar, and then noticed the sign for the smoking bar. Went out there and there were like 25 garotos hanging out out there. I had no idea. 117 definitely had a higher proportion of my type of guys than Lagoa did. In total I had 4 programas there, 2 of which were with the same guy. A tall, bearded Black man with big muscles and tattoos. We had to wait a bit for a room, and he made out with me while we did. One of the best kissers I've ever met. It felt so much dirtier and I felt gross the whole time I was there. Even on their "busy" night it was really dead. There was, however, an incredibly hot, muscular latino guy with a baby face wearing a "massagista" shirt. I asked him for a massage, and for 150 reais I got a long, very legitimate feeling massage, with some sensual elements. He performed it in his underwear, and that combined with the massagista shirt made me think he was not a garoto, but after he finished and I took a look at him I was like "you are incredibly sexy," and his response was "oh do you want to have sex?" I was not expecting that and it threw me off and I said no thanks, but looking back on it he was by far the hottest guy from the whole trip and I should have said yes. I'd planned to go to a dance/sex party called Hole on my last night, but I developed a bit of a cough and decided to stay in. (I brought my own covid tests and have tested negative so far, plus I had covid 2 months ago so it's probably not that.) So I didn't really get a feel for the gay scene in Rio outside of 117 and 202, sadly. The rest of my Rio time included trips back downtown during the week, at which point it was waaaaaaaay busier, to work and go to the Museo do Amanhã, which is very interesting architecturally if not so interesting exhibit-wise. I also checked out the Metropolitan Cathedral, which is very interesting, as well as taking the Bonde de Santa Teresa, which is a nice ride, but not much to do up there. Cristo Redentor was exhausting and IMO not worth the trip. I bought "skip the line" tickets via Viator, and took the Corcovado train up. That was interesting, and then you get to the top and there are SO MANY PEOPLE. The views are great, I'll give it that. But getting back down was a shitshow. The line for the train (which you could not skip on the way back down) went halfway up the stairs to the statue. I'd estimate I waited about an hour to get on a train back down, and by the time I did I had to go back to the hotel and take a nap. I also checked out the Museum of Modern Art (not worth it in my opinion), and walked around Leblon in Ipanema, which is a much nicer area than Copacabana, with lots of shops and restaurants, and where I'd consider staying next time. I'm not much of a beach person, so I just took a lot of walks up and down the sidewalk next to the beaches, stopping for drinks and food at the many beachside bars and restaurants, and peoplewatching. I never actually touched the sand. I had thought about renting a car to go to Abricó Beach, which is a nude beach outside of Rio, but driving in a foreign country seemed unnecessarily stressful so I decided against it. In terms of food, my hotel had a great restaurant in it, Q Ceviche, and I went to O Grego twice because it's open late (12 AM) and was delicious. I did go to Fogo de Chão and the meat was my least favorite part. It just wasn't very flavorful. I much preferred the salad bar, which actually had a tray of pork belly with crackling, which was the best meat by far. Both of my hotels had The Coffee stands nearby, which is very convenient because ordering is done via an iPad which makes it much easier than speaking to a cashier. I found myself going to The Coffee over any other coffee place around the city because of this. One thing that did make an impression on me is how gay Brazil is. I've seen so many gay couples holding hands walking down the street, even outside of gay areas. The first two times I turned on the TV I saw a drag queen and a gay love scene. There are antidiscrimination notices all over, and on the metro there's an ad for a show called Tunnel of Love that has straight and gay couples making out. I didn't realize how openly gay friendly Brazil is, especially with all the terrible things I'd heard from Bolsonaro. And overall, everything here is just so inexpensive. A nice dinner rarely cost me more than $40. I'd spend 3-4 hours drinking at Lagoa or 117 for $30. I had 9 sessions with men, including a pornstar, for the same price as 2 would have been in the US. Ubers cost between $5 and $10, even with surge pricing. Overall, I've had a great trip and I'm excited to come back. Since it's only an hour ahead of east coast time, it's pretty easy for me to work remotely from here, so I think I may plan to come back for a month or so at some point. Here in Pattaya, other parties have hastened to disassociate themselves from the trivial and boring issue. “We should be concentrating on the economic and political future of Thailand,” said a senior Pheu Thai party member. Sex toys have been banned from sale in Thailand since a 1928 obscenity law although the penalties are rather lopsided: a mild US$1,800 fine or draconian three years in prison are mentioned in the criminal code. According to internet reports over the years, Pattaya has taken the brunt of the publicity. A tragedy occurred in 2006 when a British vacationer took a large female balloon doll back to his hotel room and tried to blow-inflate it without mechanical assistance. A fatal heart attack followed. Prosecutions have been rare. In 2018 a Pattaya night market was raided and thousands of liberators, rings, strap-ons arousal drugs and bondage gear were seized. Some of the equipment had names which require specialist interpretation, including erotic glider, the poached egg and the starfish. One of the salesmen arrested said his intentions were simply to improve the sex lives of old men, reduce rapes and save marriages. A Thai man filed a complaint with the police in Samut Prakarn province near Bangkok yesterday after his boyfriend stole over 200,000 baht of gold accessories. The victim, a 69 year old man named Songchai “Noobird” Maicharoen, allowed reporters from Channel 3 to visit his house to conduct an interview regarding the theft case. The house of the alleged thief’s boyfriend, a 28 year old man named Geng, is located only 50 metres away from Noobird’s home. Noobird revealed that he and Geng had been in a relationship for about six months, and had no idea that Geng had a habit of stealing as he was introverted. On the day of the incident, Geng was at home alone because Noobird visited a neighbour. Upon returning home, he discovered that Geng was already gone, along with his valuable assets. Noobird further disclosed that Geng knew where he kept all his gold accessories. The stolen items included three gold bracelets, one gold necklace, one gold ring, and a watch worth over 200,000 baht. From Pattaya Mail By Barry Kenyon The latest notice from the Thai tourism ministry lists the exceptions to the rule that all foreigners must pay on arrival 300 baht at airports and 150 baht by land or sea. The fortunate ones are diplomats, infants under 2 years, those with work permits, single day and transit passengers and that famous expression: foreign residents in Thailand. The latter phrase is optimistically being interpreted by some expats to include themselves as they see themselves as “residents” by virtue of their annual, renewable extensions of stay based on retirement or marriage or because they are learning Thai. But the contextual meaning of “resident” here is “permanent resident” or that category of foreigner who holds a red police residency book and has no visa expiry date in his or her passport. Needless to say, it is a much sought-after status with a complex application procedure which can take years. The scheme has been delayed until September because of the publicized reluctance of airlines to include the tax in most airfares whilst skillfully excluding the 300 baht from the tickets of Thai nationals and the foreign exempt groups. It is not yet clear whether this dilemma will be resolved by taxing everybody and instituting a post-arrival refund policy, or by training travel agents what documentation to look for when deciding whether to include the tax. Of course, establishing a payment system on arrival at Thai airports would risk macro crowd control issues. Taxable foreigners arriving at land border crossings have their own issues such as needing change, paying in foreign currencies or offering online payments. How to avoid long queues of discontented travellers has not yet been resolved, according to the Tourist Authority of Thailand. The proposed solutions have included advance payment online, cash booths at immigration checkpoints and, latterly, the establishment of a private company to sort everything out. The Thailand Tourism Fee (TTF), according to the latest publicity circular, is to develop and keep up tourist destinations – presumably renovations and improvements – and “to provide medical insurance for tourists”. Without clarification, this seems to suggest that tourists – whoever they are – are automatically covered for medical emergencies and do not need their own insurance cover. But previous announcements suggested that government cover would be restricted to discretionary help in mass accidents such as cremation costs and compensation to family members. A spokesman at the tourist ministry said further information on TTF might be delayed until after the general election in mid May. Can’t come soon enough.

I'm posting a few pieces that are an interesting point/counterpoint about the looming Trump/DeSantis catfight. And what follows that. As a partisan Democrat, I take them to be mostly good news for Biden. First, a piece from Jeff Greenfield about why Trump is likely to be the Republican nominee. Second, a piece from Steve Kornacki about why that more likely than not means Trump loses, yet again, in 2024. The Real Reason Trump Might Win the Nomination He’s still the president of Republican America. I buy what Greenfield is saying. It's backed by polls. For the majority of Republicans, they'll back Trump for the reason Democrats will back Biden. He's the President. And he's a winner. If you're a typical Republican, Trump actually won twice. Biden never won. He's just a liar. You can pretty much stop there, perhaps. Greenfield adds all the caveats. Will a second or third indictment be the charm? Probably not. What if more leading Republicans point out more often that nominating Trump means losing? I just read an article about the rut DeSantis is in, in which one of his backers pointed out that in some poll of Nevada, Trump would lose to Biden by a few points. Whereas DeSantis would beat Biden. As I documented above, almost every poll of every swing state this year shows DeSantis would probably do a better job taking out Biden than Trump, usually by like 3 to 5 points. This seems to have absolutely no impact on Republicans whatsoever. Maybe it's that simple. Trump is President. Why switch, any more than we would have in 2020? Let's add a new one. Will the Dominion lawsuit and Tucker's firing convince more Republicans that Tucker cheated on them? Probably not. No offense, Tucker. But they married Trump. Not you. You were just like the flower girl at the wedding, if we're being honest. It sure was pretty to watch you blossom on Fox, though. At least as of now, it looks like being indicted is actually helping Trump consolidate his hold over the GOP. Which makes sense. If you are running a grievance campaign, being indicted by a Black New York City liberal in a baseless political witch hunt is a very nice political cross to bear. How many times does Don, Jr. have to point out that at some point his Daddy deserves a break? You know those evangelicals. They're all about more empathy, and less abortion. This is a good marriage for them. And yet .................. I love the ambiguity of that piece. Kornacki is right. A Biden/Trump rematch will be wildly unpopular. A lot of people will say it is de-energizing. Especially on the Democratic side. At least Trump fires up his base. Which is the main reason Republicans like Rich Mitch and Tucker Carlson tolerate a guy they hate passionately. A lot of Independents will react in horror, since the polls already make it clear they want neither. Democrats should be scared shitless. If you stop watching Steve's number crunching about halfway through, we have a POTUS who is pretty deep underwater. Here's one poll Steve didn't mention: we also have an economy that most voters say is on the wrong track. That said, when pressed by Morning Joe - who relentlessly points out every chance he gets that Trump led Republicans to defeat in 2018, and 2020, and 2022, after losing the popular vote and barely winning in 2016 - Kornacki goes through the reasons why Biden is probably under rated in the polls. Trump is clearly NOT like the others in those favorability polls. 48 % of Americans feel badly about Joe Biden. 46 % feel badly about Democrats. 43 % feel badly about Republicans. So far, there's only large minorities that feel badly about the sitting POTUS, or either US political party. Meanwhile, 53 % feel badly about Trump. He's the odd man out. A majority of Americans actually don't like the guy. And simply do not want him to be President. How do you overcome that? The same is true if you look at the favorables. At 38 %, Biden is actually viewed more favorably than Democrats (36 %), Republicans (33 %), or Trump (34 %). He'll be the Democratic nominee because people will do what he keeps asking them to do: judge me against the alternatives, not The Almighty. (Or Kamala. But Biden wins that race, too.) The fact that maybe 38 % of Americans actually feel good about Biden matches with his low baseline in these horse race polls. Once you get higher into the 40's, and then get past 50, to one degree or another people are probably voting for Biden as the lesser of evils. But, unlike Trump, he doesn't have a majority who actually kind of see him as evil. We've tested the reliability of these numbers in both the 2016 and 2020 Presidential elections. And the outcomes are pretty much what a Kornacki or Morning Joe number geek would expect. The thing that was interesting about the 2016 horse race polls, as RCP showed them every day, is that out of roughly 500 polling days between June 2015 and Election Day 2016, Trump was ahead of Clinton in the polls for maybe one week's worth of days. I kept wondering: how likely is it he'll be ahead of Hillary on the one day that really matters, Nov. 8, 2016? Call me dumb. Because having lived through Bush/Gore, I should have remembered that you don't have to be ahead in the polls, or even in the actual votes, to win. Trump himself allegedly said that if you'd held the same election a dozen or so times on the same day in 2016, he would have lost most of them. It was kind of a statistical fluke. There was divine intervention, of course. Thanks to The Second Coming Of Comey. To be very specific, Trump won with 46.1 % of the vote in 2016. Which is pretty close to what you'd expect is the best he could do. Since about 53 % of Americans really don't like him. And don't want him to be POTUS. That number seems to be incredibly sticky. We have almost a decade of RCP polling on Trump's favorability. There's actually NEVER been a day that fewer than 50 % of Americans viewed President Trump unfavorably. Not one day. There were a few days in late 2016, after he won but before he was inaugurated, when feelings for Trump were the least bad they've ever been. Call it hope. There were a few days in early 2022 when his horrific unfavorable ratings after Jan. 6th slid back down to about 50 %. Call it boredom. But whenever Trump is in the news - Mar A Lago, indictment, running for POTUS again - his unfavorables always spike. It is like political gravity. In 2020, he got 46.8 % of the vote. 53 % of people who vote just don't want him to be President. And the fact that older voters who are dying like him the most, and new young voters like him the least, won't help him much in 2024. Biden's numbers in 2020 also make sense. He won with 51.3 % of the vote. So he can clearly get a majority of voters on his side on the day that it really matters. (Arguably, he did it twice as Veep, too.) And that matches with Kornacki's number, that about 48 % of Americans feel badly about Biden. That leaves 52 % for Biden to get. And, in 2020, he got most of them. Biden's unfavorable ratings are of course upside down now, with 54 % of Americans not approving of the job he is doing. But 54 % of Americans did approve of what he was doing for some of his Presidency. And much of his Vice Presidency. There's no evidence that a majority of Americans are hard set against Biden - every day, every year. Like they are against Trump -every day, every year. My guess is that indictment hurts Trump's favorables. It is scary that there is an obvious groundswell for Trump right now. And since most people have come to see polls as bullshit, knowing that DeSantis would actually do better than Trump in Nevada isn't much consolation. But if and when indictments come down for how Trump tried to steal an election in Georgia, or stop a peaceful transfer of power by tossing rioters at cops at The Capitol, there's no reason to think the 53 % of Americans who feel very badly about Trump, and have for a decade, will change their mind. What is scarier to me is this idea: To get to something like 51 %, Biden has a long way to crawl back. He needs to get almost everyone who doesn't feel badly about him to actually vote for him. He's been there and done that before. But can he do it again? One way of looking at it is that when Biden is running against Barack Obama, or even Michael Dukakis, maybe he doesn't look so good. When he is running against Donald Trump, he really is an attractive enough lesser of evils. At least in 2020 and 2022. Third time's the charm? If there is a third party candidate, it's also not clear that either Trump or Biden need anything like 50 % of the vote to actually win. My guess is a third party helps Trump, by potentially lowering the winning percentage to something like 47 %. But if Trump himself is the third party candidate, that's a whole different thing. My mind was settled on this pretty much the day Biden won in 2020. Allan Lichtman is my guy. So he argues that by virtue of Biden being the incumbent, and avoiding a party food fight, Democrats already have an advantage in 2024. So then it pretty much comes down to the economy, stupid. Why would a small chunk of the 53 % of Americans who kind of detest him vote for Trump, anyway? A really bad recession and stock market crash would probably do it. Or maybe a humiliating loss in Ukraine? I definitely agree with Lichtman that Americans will vote in 2024, like they do in every Presidential election, on things that really matter. If the economy and stock market are in recovery by November 2024, as I think most economic talking heads project, it will be much easier for Biden to persuade the 53 % of Americans who don't like Trump to vote for him instead. Probably even moreso if Trump is the most impeached and indicted man in America, ever! Jim Clyburn, co-chair of Biden 2024, was on Morning Joe this morning. He has a much simpler explanation than mine. He says politicians win when voters feel them, as opposed to seeing them or hearing them. Biden is under rated because polls can't measure that Biden comes across as a normal, boring guy who is like you and me. Maybe, maybe not. I'll go with Kornacki. What we do know is that a slight majority of Americans DO NOT detest Biden, the way they seem to detest Trump. That is sufficient to explain to me why Trump will kick Ron's ass. And then Joe and Kamala will kick Trump's ass, again.

Day 4 Lagoa If not now, then when? I am not as brave as many people on the forum. However, after I take the first step I usually find my balance afterward. It was a Saturday night, one of the best days to visit Lagoa, when I decided to take my first step. I find the Paulistas take care of their bodies and have very good hygiene. Sitting at GRU now and I’ll try to sum up a bit my 8-day trip in Sao Paulo. This post is about non-sexual stuff, and the sexual part will be the next one. We in Europe have certain exposure to Brazilian Portuguese as many movies and tv-shows are dabbed into it. I was shocked to see how little Brazilians are exposed to European Portuguese. Most people I talked to, whichever social class they may be from, and I talked to a lot of them, don’t even recognize basic words such as Fixe (Legal), sesta (soneca) and Patavina (Nada). Of course there are also lots of slangs that I didn’t understand at first, but communication was not an issue. The arrival at GRU was very smooth, I was the first to pass immigration, and my luggage did follow from Paris and came out one of the firsts. I was somehow stressed about it as the stopover at MEX was CHAOTIC! The interline agreement from Air France and Aeromexco was a joke. Everyone had to go cross the immigration, retrieve the luggage, cross the customer with it, then right behind, on the left, there was a zone for connecting flights’ luggage. It was very badly explained or guided. Most passengers brought the luggages with them and took the monorail to T2 to recheck them in there, which was VERY far and very time consuming. The luggage service at MEX was a bigger joke! I was on biz and it took them more than one hour to deliver the luggage. Don’t even try if your connection is shorter than 3 hours. One of the Aeromexico lounge at T2 has a ‘Spa’ with ONE shower. They only schedule ONE passenger every half an hour, even most of us just need 5 minutes to fresh up. It was a big downgrade from Air France lounge at CDG, where you can even enjoy unlimited Finnish sauna… The Aeromexico flight to GRU was actually not half bad. Newish 787 and food has taste. It was my first time in SP and I was not impressed by the urbanism. Everything looks dated and tired. The historical centre is small and dirty. The Sé, the San Bento monastery and whatever touristic stuff they tried to fabricate has very limited interest compared to even 3rd tier European cities. The area of Republica and Bela Vista seemed safe but the infrastructure was dated. Patched roads, running-down houses and visible poverty. In Republica there are some small cute shops catering to lower mid-market, very possibly gay clientele. I spent most of my nights at Intercontinental. Dated design but very well maintained, and extremely well managed. Being the top-tier member, I was given the Paulista suite with a jacuzzi. Even though I had to break my stay into 3 checkins, they kept that suite for me and personalized it according to my preference without me asking for it. Hot milk upon arrival, cervical pillows, camomile tea with honey in the evening, etc. This level of service is standard in Four Seasons or Ritz but definitely a sign of high professionalism in an Intercon. I did venture to Wyndham Paulista once and I ran back screaming. In Europe, Wyndham is a well respected chain. How could this one be so racked? Everything was cheap and most things were broken. Anyhow, stay in Intercon if you want to be near MASP in SP. The breakfast is standard but with an impressive selection of cut fruits and juices. The lunch and dinner are served both in the restaurant and the lobby bar, and I had most of my dinners at the latter. Two of the evenings, they had a great vocal band there. Great performance. I’m a big fun of Bossa Nova and vocal jazz. FullSizeRender.MOV Ave. Paulista is a constant reminder of the lost glory of Brazil. Besides museums and public buildings, two shopping centres are considered good, City Sao Paulo and Patio Paulista. They are not very up-scale but have most things one might need. The exchange in Patio Paulista, near the food court, has the best rate (USD 4.8+ vers. 4.7). A much better shopping centre that I visited was the Iguatemi. It has Hermes, Louis Vuitton, etc. Most imported luxury goods are twice the price compared to Europe so I’m not buying ANYTHING foreign here. I do get the feeling that luxury goods are reserved to a very small portion of the population in Brazil. Most of mid-class Brazilians, based on my observation, would buy branded perfumes, which are btw extremely overpriced here, and refill them with local juice. I think it’s very smart and says a lot about Brazilian reality. I even had a GP who contacted me, asking me to bring him a bottle in exchange of 3 free sessions. What’s really exiting is the presence of many work-shop-stage local designer shops. Very often the shop is street level, and the atelier / office is upstairs or on the back. There are a couple galeries and one, Urban Art, is really good and extremely affordable. Big pieces are going around 500 USD and I was very attempted to get one for my new apartment in Lisbon. Maybe I’ll do that before I leave in August. Many trendy cafés on Rua Oscar Freire and the parallel Rua Lorena. One appears to be very popular, with a long queue outside all the time. I hate queueing. Many chic Paulistanos walk their cute little dogs in this area, which give it a ‘Avenue Montaigne’ vibe. If I were to rent an airbnb, I’d definitely consider here. I went to Bem Retiro, the Korean / Chinese town on Dia de Namorados (Brazilian Saint Valentine) with my little husband (I’ll explain it in the next post). We did Karaoke (about reais per hour) and had dinner in a very authentic (both the cooking and the decor) Chinese restaurant. It’s actually almost only cater to Chinese customers. My little hubby told me that he wanted to try it since long long time, but they actually request Brazilian customers to be accompanied by at least one Chinese. Not because they are racist, but because virtually no one there speaks Portuguese and the menu is completely in Chinese. It was my first Chinese meal there. I insisted to order Pax + 1 dishes, as we do normally in China. But when the three dishes showed up, we felt obliged to invite 5 more guys to join us. Lol. In Chinese / Korean restaurants here, portions are ridiculously huge. Days later, in another restaurant, we actually saw Brazilian families of 3 or 4 ordering only one dish to share, and it’s fairly common. Brazilians do bring over-ordered food home in plastic boxes, as in most Asian countries, and I love it. Wasting food nowadays is so shameful. Europeans need to learn that! I spent my last evening in Libertade, the Japanese / Asian town. Many asian shops, filled with cute little stuff. But I was told that most of those things can be found on Ali-express (a cheaper and foreign version of taobao, or a B2C version of Alibaba) for a fracture of the price. At least 3 guys talk about Ali-express and how much they are dependant on it. I’m not a big fun of Japanese food so we ate in a Filipino restaurant. On the table aside were an American couple and they told us that Filipino restaurants are very uncommon in SP. The food appeared authentic and we ate for less than 100 reais! Restaurants are somehow expensive in the city centre for the locals. I’d count 50 to 100 reais per person for fairly simple food. Food court in shopping centres may cost you 30 to 50 and really high-end places might have sky as limit. I did find a Michelin one star restaurant on Oscar Freire, and I tried to bring little husby there, but he insisted that we ate Asian food instead, as it’s more to our taste anyway. I was using uber most of the time. But I did try once the bus, out of curiosity. It’s extremely simple. There’s someone in the bus to sell the ticket, and it costs 4.4 reais. You can pay with cash, but maybe not too large note, because they won’t have enough changes for you. I didn’t manage to buy the famous ‘Bilhete Único’. They don’t sell it in the subway station, you need to go to main bus stations (am I mis-informed?) Once you have the card, you can charge it on the machines in the station. I was told that old people can ride for free and students pay only half. The bolistas (state scholarship owners) ride for free too. My little husby is doing an intern at an international fashion house and he’s paid pretty well for that in Brazilian standards, 1500 reais salary, plus 700 for food and 300 for transport, which he considers as very generous. He told me the entry level job in that company would be 500 reais more, and a entry level employee in a bank would be 1800 as salary but with probably less food and transport subsidies. The economy is very fragile here, largely due to bad management of the government. I saw in news that in 2021 Brazilian had the weakest income in the past ten years, with an average of merely 1535 reais per month (if I remember the number correctly), slightly above the minimal salary. 10.8% of the population had less than 210 reais as monthly income. There was the scandal of Petrobra, and another one about the 28 millions of Pfizer and Astrazenec vaccines, costing over 1 billion reais, are about to expire before reaching to the much in-need. Every time I turned on the news, some crazy shit is happening. I decided not to watch TV anymore. It’s a country with such potential, but so much was wasted. I remember, when I was a kid, before China became a thing, Brazil was often praised to be the next economy power house. Even as a foreigner, I feel great pity for it, especially for its people. That said, Brazilians need to learn to be more organized and more punctuate. The numbers of my appointments that were delayed and cancelled were scary. Actually, not once, not once, Brazilians I met were on time, if they decide to show up. I’m not talking about only private appointments here. The transport in SP city centre seems fine, but to / from GRU seems more challenging. My ride was about one hour each time, which is unbearably long for 24 km. Price-wise, it’s about 15 for 3 km, 20-25 for 5-6 km, and 70 for 24 km, so you get the idea. I got a haircut in a little hair salon, with a post-industrial vibe. It was 40 reais. The Cabeleireira had little idea what to do with Asian hair, and I wonder where those Japanese descendants get their hair done. I didn’t see any asian hair dresser even in Bem Retiro or Libertade.
