As most of you know, my board was the victim of a hack. Moses, the owner of the Sawatdee board, came to the rescue once again. It was quite a challenge to find the hack, but he succeeded and eliminated it. I am very pleased to announce the board is fully restored, on the latest software, and safe to use again. Cambodian mystery and Thai solution - first trip of 2023

Day 9 K left at 8 after breakfast downstairs with promise to take him to MahaNakhon. We were there already but obviously he liked it and this trip I did not go there yet so why not? One day we ‘ll go. Then I went to met my farang friend again in the same place we met yesterday. We confirmed trip to train market tomorrow. Returning to hotel I packed my meagre belongings and moved to Furama Sathorn Xclusive hotel. That move was planned as safety valve after CCP asked me to move flights. I wanted to have escape route in case things won’t work. After discovering that hotel in Dec 2021 it’s my most favorite in BKK and even better value than Raya. Older place but room are big and breakfast included in price. In fact when cost of breakfast for two at Foodland is added to Baan Silom rate cost of staying at Furama Xclusive works out almost the same. It was short walk from one hotel to another and luckily my room was already available so I could move in just before noon and again they rewarded my loyalty by upgrading me one notch above room I booked. Goes without saying never problems with visitors there and nobody is rising brews seeing different companion every morning. In Decmeber 2021 hero of my trip was T from Sabaidee spa but somehow I did not see him after that trip, neither in May nor in October last year an somehow I felt nostalgic today so I Lined him and asked to come to work at 5 pm for reunion and after that fell asleep for good 2 hours. All those long times and sleepless nights are showing . Trek to Sabaidee for very rewarding massage session , too bad that his English is almost non existent and not much talk could be done using google translate as obviously we did not meet for smartphone session. Even if it was excellent and in great degree proper massage session I decided for one more. But first , feeling hungry I went to G’Bangkok in soi 4 for a dinner and was surprised how busy restaurant was – I took last table. Then to hotel to refresh and shave and my next step was Tawan but not for show. Another day K told me that after M left for 9-Teen, now Mas, resident twink is one who is giving massages and since I like him , thank you very much, I couldn’t deny myself a pleasure. I was bit surprised that their price was raised to 800 , it was only 500 last two trips. Session was great and we even had some massage indeed so despite price it was pure pleasure – that is what happens when you really like the guy. At end I was taken aback a bit when he asked for no less than 2000 tip but I paid gladly since as I said above, I like him. But at that price it may be once a trip pleasure. I think I’m pricing myself out of Tawan, don’t blame boys but myself. Never thought being stingy has merits but slowly I’m warming to an idea , at least there. I did not stay in bar, only told B I will off him later and paid off fee to secure it and went to soi 4 to Banana Club. I had a beer outside as I like one of their barkers , bought him a beer and slipped 100 baht into his jeans discretely using well rehearsed Vinapu Tuck. One day I must get acquainted with him closer. Even Her Majesty Mamasan Lucy came to say hallo and asked if I have a tip for her to an cheerful answer ‘ no’. Then another beer inside, I asked one of their guys to seat with me , bought him a drink and tipped 500 for a feel. Smooth like baby and endowed like porn pro so money well spent. After a good half an hour I sent him back to the stage knowing I won’t off him tonight and it was great move as he was called by some other customer right after -poor guy in audience was probably waiting impatiently if I off the boy or not. Boys in Banana are not generally my type but apart from guy sitting with me I spotted other 4 I could off, all twinks with hooliganish faces I so like. Who knows, one day I will test them one by one. It was past 11pm when after having so good time in Banana I returned to Tawan to pick up B. Of course as soon as I went inside few palms were outstretched and few undies lowered , all asking for tips but since today I changed religion to stingy , all were left empty handed and empty underweared. I start liking my new, Scrooge like, behavior there. I lie bar and boys there but as I said , I spoiled them and in process my experience there. Now time to reverse course. Advantage of B is not only his built- steely muscles with 0% fat but also distinction of being one without habit of outstretched palm. Dinner at Foodland , again I swear the same friendly waiter suggested he orders steak and today it was prime cut indeed so good value for my money and then quick moto rode to hotel for another mostly sleepless night.8 points -

Vinapu, I would add to your list, those of us who choose to retire here to continue all of what is written above - because it is cheaper than in our home countries, the weather is better, the food is great, the beaches are wonderful. Furthermore, the big gay retirement community that is here gives us a sense of happiness and security knowing that we can avoid the assisted care centers back in our home countries, that might require us to go back into the closet for the last years of our lives. Instead, we can die with dignity, having our Thai guys take care of us until the bitter end - in my mind, this Thai type of assisted living care is SO much better than the back home version and is affordable. Last year, my mother died in assisted living care (she was there for 3 long years), and it was costing us between $7,000 to $9,000 USD each month - truly outrageously expensive. The assisted care center was nice - but very mechanical and mundane in its approach - not the way that I want to finish the last years of my life - so, Thailand it is for me.4 points -

Most of the guys providing services experience very complicated, stressful, and difficult lives—defined by grinding poverty and never ending financial obligations to the bottomless pit of very dysfunctional and often broken families. They generally lack the critical thinking skills that most Westerners experience as second nature. Very few of them actually like working as service providers despite the smiles, genuine affection, and good nature they so readily share. They will also not hesitate to completely reject you & your money, no matter the amount, if they don’t like you for whatever reason (e.g. fear of losing face, or loss of face, is by far the biggest driver). The interactions with the vast majority of their clients are opportunistic (and in real time) and a fleetingly brief transactional part of their lives. In my experience, this is generally an accurate profile of who you typically meet. They are young men without much direction, ability to plan, very poor father role models, and not much hope for the future. Of course, there are exceptions to this but they’re few & far between.4 points -

China does things that is best for them economically. In Thailand, they have build bridges to the future by supplying them with trains, tracks, etc. Their goal is to get their goods out of China to the world. I don't see them doing something that would hinder that. However, a loss for Putin may make it harder for China in Taiwan. That is what they are most trying to figure into the equation. I appreciated that Biden visited the Ukraine and showed that he was resolute in his support. I agree with @stevenkesslarthat Carter was right and now their plans need to pay off. I said the same thing to my Indian programmers many time. If they build the middle class, India could be one of the next super powers. But, India does not know how to do this. Both countries have enormous potential and lets face it, the US is going slowly down in importance. I would say China is next in line if they play things right.3 points

I am not experienced at all. I'm not a lawyer. When it comes to boys working in Pattaya (I refuse to use the word phrase "service providers"), I have a few regulars and live very happily here. I don't feel the need to look for boys on web forums. I'm luckily enough to walk around Jomtien Complex most nights.3 points -

Vinapu's hotel photos seemed familiar, despite my never having stayed at Furama. It was the floor; I've seen that same wood (faux-wood?) flooring from Krabi to Chiang Rai. Some Thai business-I hope it's Thai- is making a good profit. PeterRS is certainly right about noise- and I'm very sensitive to any disturbance- but when Tarntawan dispensed with those old, smelly carpets a few years ago to be replaced by you-know-what, I was delighted.3 points -

I'm no lawyer, but none other than Laurence Tribe thinks Dominion Voting Systems' request for a $1.6 billion summary judgment against Fox News is likely to succeed. For others who are not legal eagles, a summary judgment is one in which the facts are so compelling that a judge finds no need for a trial and decides the case on the information that has been presented in the brief. In this case, Tribe thinks that Dominion has provided enough evidence that Fox News deliberately spread lies that Dominion's voting machines were faulty and denied Donald Trump the 2020 election. “I have never seen a defamation case with such overwhelming proof that the defendant admitted in writing that it was making up fake information in order to increase its viewership and its revenues,” Tribe told the Guardian. “Fox and its producers and performers were lying as part of their business model.” One such piece of proof was a tweet put out a day after the election by Fox reporter Jaqui Heinrich who “correctly factchecked [a Trump] tweet, pointing out that top election infrastructure officials said that there is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised.” After the tweet, Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity went ballistic. They asked to get Heinrich fired because the truth was hurting their ability to broadcast misinformation and that was interfering with their ratings, and with Fox News' stock price. She took down her tweet the following day. But all the tweets and compromising emails still exist and are included in Dominion's brief. Fox News lawyers say the falsehoods knowingly spread by their anchors are protected by the First Amendment. But others disagree. “You may have a first amendment right to report on what the president said but you have no right to validate a statement that you know to be false,” said Steven Shapiro, former legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union and counsel or co-counsel on more than 200 supreme court briefs. It's possible this landmark case could be decided quickly. And it's not the only lawsuit Dominion has filed. Billion-dollar cases against Trump lawyers Rudy Giuliani and Sydney Powell are still active. Personally, it would please me greatly if Dominion prevailed in all its cases and actually received multi-billion-dollar judgments. For too many years, we've been inundated with known lies masquerading as truth and there have been few if any consequences. Here's hoping that's about to change. 🤞2 points

Preliminaries Normally January to April is NOT a period in which I travel due to work commitments. I wouldn’t even plan it but there are some issues brewing for later part of 2023 which may stop me from travel , at least from travel to Asia. And work load seemed lighter for this January as younger colleagues took the slack so just before Christmas I decided to book another trip to our beloved Land of Smiles. Time wise all I could afford was 2 weeks and that is what I aimed for. It will be also my first trip in January and February. When I return I’ll be left only with March , Apr and July to cover Some readers may recall following statement from my Oct/ Nov 2022 trip summary : “ Surprisingly perhaps guy I consider most memorable of the whole trip was one whom I did not even off, that hunk I met in bar in PP. Perhaps that’s good - reason to return there sooner the better.” Yes , I liked him a lot so as part of planned trip I booked flight for 3 days to Phnom Penh (PP ) just to check if he is still working there. In Oct he told me that he is not going with clients , just drinks with them in bar and when I tried to suggest he can accompany me for trip to Siem Reap he said he is busy till end of 2022 but may be available in next year. When in Siem Reap I made last effort to see if he would come to see me there but response was the same and this was last I heard from him. In short I gave up but being in the region I wanted to try once more. Applied for Cambodian e-visa and it was issued overnight so all I had to do was to wait for departure day month Iater. Guardian Angel had other plans for me though, right after New Year , out of blue Line message came from my guy asking ‘ How are you ?’ like he knew I’m coming . Which was not a case as very few people knew about my plans and nobody , including me , even knew his name or nick. It’s why I suspect Angel’s hand in that. I was thrilled and even more few hours later when new message arrived ‘ now I have time for us”. Obviously it seemed that he somehow remembered his ‘ next year possible ‘ statement. That landed me immediately on Cloud 7 if not 9 and that feeling did not leave me for quite few days. Even now on recollection I can’t help but smile. We ironed things fast, I suggested 5 days trip to either Angkor or Bangkok and Pattaya (3+2). He opted for Thailand but for some reason only for 3 days Bangkok part. Fine , what about 5 days in Bangkok ? Immediately it was approved ‘yes , 5 days”. He sent me copy of his passport so I could buy him ticket , outbound for exactly the same flight I was supposed to return to Bangkok originally. What about kissing? “yes I kiss and I want you to kiss me too”, “ I will do my best we have fun together”. Financial arrangements were set for both PP and Bangkok part. Being prime beef he knew his price but from my point of view what he asked for was roughly what I spend daily for massage and overnight session so I did not have any problems approving his request. Learning he has a car I suggested taking two trips to sights near PP by his car and offered price bit higher than travel office would charge expecting that premium goes toward stolen kiss or 5 somewhere on the road. All that took only 1 or 2 days during which I never left my cloud 9 happy mood fortified by few pictures he send me unsolicited ( no I will not post them here nor send to you by PM even if they were decent pictures , suitable for grandma to see ). Week later cloud 9 become bit cloudy indeed with message ‘ you should go to Bangkok before me “???? Why ? we are on the same flight but we can pretend we don’t know each other. “ I want to make sure you are in Bangkok before me since I did not travel for long time “. I find it strange but being NOT about to blow whole thing about additional ticket ( my original was not refundable, non changeable I asked if the same day is OK , it was , what about flight which takes off 20 minutes earlier ? It’s OK too. Very puzzling but I invested 80 $ in new ticket, cheap price considering I’m looking for 8 days in arms of one of best guys I ever put my eyes on. I have few ideas what may be reason but none convincing so I just let it go. After daily rounds of ‘how are you today ?” messages few days later more up to a point message came “ I did not travel for long and need new clothes, shoes and suitcase, can you send me 350 $”, Oho, ho though I, it starts already . I suggested that we can do shopping when I’m 3 days in PP but he said he prefers to do it now because there are great sales before Chinese New Year. Makes sense. But again , hoping for the best I sent him 200$ and promised to gift him my new suitcase I just bought, enforced it even with the picture. Fact that I put limit on request was noticed but with what seemed good humor. So now I descended from cloud 9 to level 5 if not 4 but still I’m thrilled with anticipation. Even see good point with that split flight as it could be escape route for me if those 3 days in PP will turn sour or something. 10 days to go and I really count days but seeing those requests I also start thinking about escape route if need arises. Then few days before departure next request comes , car loan of 426 $ to be repaid enforced with photo of previous payment. It looked authentic with payment due 3 days before my arrival in PP. Can I borrow him that money and subsequently deduct from his payments when we meet ? No, I don’t want to do any advance payments, organize money there I answered while confirming our financial arrangements. Answer was “ ok I understand , see you in PP in few days “ . So I’m still thrilled locking my door ready to go to the airport but seeing things are bit less rosy although not unexpected I resolved to leave money I set aside for him for Bangkok part in trusted hands in BKK and not to reveal name of hotel we will be in until we both land in Swampy. Also fact that I’m planning to change hotels after 3 nights as it’s my habit anyways is supposed to be hidden until morning of move. Just in case. That request to fly separately bothers me a bit it needs to be said, if only because I can’t come up with plausible explanation. I’m not overly suspicious realizing that some of it may be related to fact that while his spoken English is quite conversational , his written language is quite poor so that my be reason plausible explanation is not coming. Another factor tempering my excitement is concern how I will keep him entertained during those 5 days as his ideas of good time maybe different from mine but that is problem for us to solve in due course. Which is soon.2 points

Reading this thread has caused me to rethink my own criteria for posting going forward. I don't see any reason to publicly post personal experience (positive or negative) of a named or pictured individual--with or without permission. The internet today is not the same one we first became familiar with a few decades ago. It has the power to ruin lives with a click. This board provides a great platform to exchange views and information without pushing the envelope. As some posters regularly demonstrate, it's indeed possible to post interesting--seductive and titillating even--reports without resorting to identifying playmates.2 points -
From Coconuts Bangkok Mixed news for series addicts on a budget: Starting today, Netflix has reduced the monthly rate for its basic package by 60% but users may not share their accounts. The basic monthly package now runs THB169, down from THB279. That means enjoying the latest episodes of psycho thriller You, searing K-dramas, or any of Note Udom’s comedy specials at 720p resolution, which qualified as HD in 2010. The package limits users to only one device at a time. Those already subscribed to the basic package will automatically pay the new rate on their next billing cycle.2 points

I just saw a rare and candid TV interview on German DW News of a former Chinese military strategist. The guy is part of the Chinese delegation to MSC. The interviewer is DW corespondent Richard Walker. You should watch the whole interview and judge the reliability of the Chinese statements yourself. The essence is that the Chinese have no ambition to challenge the US globally, and they are only interested in exerting influence in the western Pacific (i.e. along the Chinese coast). Their military is still far weaker than the US military to be a realistic competitor for the next 30 years. They disapprove of Putin's invasion of Ukraine but they have to keep a normal relationship with Russia because they share a long border and both are facing threats from the US. Finally, he is worried about escalations in Ukraine war and the nuclear threat is real. Here is the link:2 points -
I note that like many hotels the floor is not carpeted. In Asia I have little problem with this as most guests take off their outdoor shoes when entering, but I have noted that hotels in other parts of the world (not merely beach hotels) have started abandoning carpets. This obviously makes cleaning simoler and cheaper, but I have learned through experience to avoid them where possible. Noise from above has a nasty habit of filtering down and noise is one issue I want to avoid when i am trying to sleep. Case 1 was a hotel in Hong Kong. The man in the room above did not take off his shoes when entering his room and i heard every clump, clump late in the evening and first thing in the morning. Case 2 was a Holiday Inn at Helsinki airport where I spent 2 nights before and after flights up beyond the Arctic Circle. Once again, whoever was in the room above wore heavy shoes as he strode around the room and every step was heard in mine. Then at 5:30ish in the morning he was clearly packing his bag when it dropped on to the floor and woke me up. I then heard him shower and a few minutes later he dropped his keys on to the floor. Carpets carry a risk of tiny bugs but I'll take them any day to noise from above.2 points

Plus they are mostly just a great bunch of guys. As you know from going to Oliver's pool parties, among other things. The site works well as a support system and source of information for people who hire escorts. And, to some degree, escorts as well. I've posted there on lots of other things. And I will again. Except I figured I should just avoid that for a while, lest I be perceived as trying to make things in other forums political. There's a thread on Jimmy Carter's health right now. It will be interesting to see if people can edit themselves to avoid it from getting locked down. The idea that it's a group that just has to avoid talking about politics kind of fits. My guess is that the typical "client" over there is center to center/right. An older White guy who is relatively affluent, and may not even identify as Gay. I've been in settings where I was with a group of them, some of whom I knew to be liberals and some whom I knew to be conservatives. It was natural to just talk about other things, since politics isn't what really brought us together. Which is what is a bit weird for me, being as political as I am. If I'm volunteering for a LGBTQ rights group like EQCA, politics is what brings us together. And in just about any other setting where it is a bunch of Gay friends it isn't unusual for something political to come up. And it almost always seems to be left of center. Because they're people who identify with LGBTQ as a political movement. The one other thing that is obvious is that politics and escorting is not a particularly good match. At least not in public. I've gone to LGBTQ fundraising events with several people who frequent the board. You don't bring up the fact that you hire escorts. Or that you are an escort. One of my close friends for many years was one of the top organizers of the same sex marriage movement, who happens to be Straight. So coming out as Gay to people like her is like a celebration. When I came out as an escort, I don't think she could ever quite get her mind around it. There are of course politicians who hire male escorts. They don't talk about it, either. Or, if they do, they're in trouble. The awkward mismatch really came to the fore after the Rentboy raid. It was almost shockingly divisive among a community that all uses sites like Rentboy. What I decided at the time is that being someone who hires escorts is kind of the same thing that being Gay was half a century or more ago. Better to be discreet and not talk about it. There's no impulse to make things political. If anything, the opposite. Whereas with just about anything else Gay these days, you do try to make it political. So you can lock down rights and freedoms. I'd argue that, in the bigger LGBTQ community, the people who utilize that website are the minority. Not a tiny minority. Since sex and escorting seem to be popular among The Gays, for some strange reason. 😍 But it is kind of like a closeted part of a broader community that came out of the closet a long time ago. But if my perceptions are accurate, all that is why that website has a good reason to exist, and is thriving. It gives people a place to discuss something that doesn't flow easily off the lips in public. Whereas if you are naked in private with an escort, it flows off the lips much better. 😉2 points -

Day 8 When parting in the morning I upped his tip by savings on his meal last night and even pointed it to him. Hope word spreads that it pays not to be too glutenous. At 9 am met farang friend in café near Mahanakhon, we had talk till 11 and resolved to go to train market after tomorrow , agreed to meet at Wongwian Yai station in time for 10.40 train. Then I had mission as I got suspicion from combing Grindr that one on my best guy ever, certain M from Senso is working as hairdresser in one of shops in Rama IX Central. So jumped on MRT and soon was combing that sizable mall in search of hairdresser shops. Unfortunately did not spot him, perhaps too early , or his day off or whatever. Will try next time in Bangkok as I don’t give up on him easily. Being in area went to Ratchada train market but it was too early and shops were closed but walking there I found 10 baht coin so at least my efforts paid of. Next step was to have massage at new shop of 9-Teen in soi 6 with guy who was resident masseur in Tawan last year , now task taken by Mas , their resident twink. New shop is quite impressive, well designed and everything smells new. Word is that massage is proper , just like Prime around the corner without any sinister moves. Let’s say I decline comment on that , I liked my massage session only conclusion was bit unnerving since my guy wanted higher tip than I offered. I succumbed to request but it will be while before he will see me if at all. As much as I like Tawan and their boys , I built reputation there as handy money dispenser. I know it’s my fault but it starts hurting me so perhaps it’s time to switch that pain to guys and show them that greed is not good for their financial health. But that’s for future as that massage reminded me that this trip I did not go to Tawan yet so resolved to pay them a visit tonight. But first a dinner, this time in G”Bangkok in soi 4 . they have one fusion German -Thai dish in casserole I like so much. Don’t remember name of it but on the page where they list fusion servings that’s the one in the very bottom. Next step was my daily drink with P at Hot Male and after a while there I walked to Tawan. It was nice to be greeted by all those smiles and handshakes, less nice to fend off all those palms stretched for tips. Today my tips were reserved for performers in the show but yes , I bought drinks for 3 guys sitting with me including K and B whom I offed few times in the past. I was bit surprised , K’s cousin waitress in Happy Beer did not spy on me as he was not aware I’m in Bangkok. I always admire Thai discretion. Show as always was quite brave and very modern including not one but two special shows and usual JO competition so I dispensed 9 red notes for their efforts. K remembered that in Dec on his birthday I promised him to buy him whisky so I decided to off him tonight, invited him for a dinner in 7.5 stars and just before deadline bought him a bottle of wine as he asked for such substitution. And then to hotel for activities like knitting , stamp collection rearrangement and world peace discussions.2 points

all I know we only know about them as much as they told us. The same works other way. I personally am not that critical and as reader pointed , I see young men who are trying to make living using assets they have i.e themselves and their good looks. some are quite uplifting like one of my semi-regulars , single father who use to proudly point 'I don't have girlfriend but i have a son" Other one , also mentioned often in my reports was orphaned my mother in his childhood ( my friend who also offed him overheard him mumbling to himself ' mom help me", quite moving ) and later father was killed by Thai police. Yet still managed to built a house in his native village, whatever it is he calls a house. Personally when I think about them I avoid generalizations. Not all are poor or coming from poor backround. I know about 4 who have a car. One has small business, other one owns a condo. few , judging but how they speak English have quite extensive education. By no means they are prevailing examples but they do exist. One who has steady job but paying only 10200 per month freely admits he goes with clients for easy money. Sleepless night bringing him 3000 it's almost 1/3 of his monthly take after all The same applies to us, their clients. Our motivations to engage in the world of paid sex half world from home are very different and sometimes not even clear to ourselves I suspect. Some like Asians, some like sex far from home, some like to avoid any commitments (old saying 'most expensive sex is free one). It will be sex addicts and those who treat sex as vacation adventure. And it will be those like me who fruitlessly search for dream guy who can be offed for hand holding session only. Such dream guys are existing but it seems heat of the moment always derails hand holding only part.2 points

And sometimes a more obscure reason may actually be the one in play. I discount "I don't want to be seen with him" for two reasons. First, they could have just taken seats remote from one another. Second, this guy works publicly in a popular bar in he country's largest city where he can easily be observed in the company of numerous foreigners. Despite his claims he doesn't go with customers, it's fair to assume this wouldn't be his first rodeo. Then you have the mysterious "delivery" on he evening he was scheduled to meet Vinapu in PP. It's unlikely it was a shipment of dragon fruit from China. And then there was the request for a new suitcase that PC had been counting on Vinapu to deliver to him on arrival. If you were planning to bring something surreptitiously into another country, wouldn't it be nice if you could somehow get another person to carry your bag--and on a separate flight--because your own baggage exceeded what was allowed (or some other excuse). Perhaps he got cold feet at the last minute as he began to realize Vinapu wasn't about to buy such a yarn. Maybe he ended up using the ticket Vinapu had purchased for him and went about his business in Bangkok? In hindsight, it's easy to see the red flags popping up. But in the heat of the chase, we're all subject to being thrown off the scent by the cloudy mist of lust and attraction. And there's always the possibility that there was nothing untoward going on here, aside from a deceptive young man trying his best to extract rewards for services he had no intention on delivering.2 points

Gay Paradise? How has Bali Changed?
khaolakguy reacted to PeterRS for a topic
There are usually a few posts in Gay Guides about Thailand in years gone by with some posters (myself included) writing lovingly of the old days in the 80s and 90s when the boys in the bars were all Thais from upcountry, when nudity was de rigueur in the bars and shows were much more fun. I fully accept these must be quite boring for those whose experience of gay Thailand does not extend that far back. But as one who visited Bali 10 times in the first half of the 1980s, always staying at the same simple guest house just outside Ubud, and was totally seduced by its people, customs, their arts and wonderful friendliness, I often wonder how the mass influx of tourists has changed the island since those days. I believe it was the gay German artist Walter Spies who settled in Bali in 1927 who helped create the vision of the island being a gay paradise. Indeed, although i did not know it then, my guesthouse had been Spies' home for most of his time in Bali. He threw himself into virtually all the island's many artistic activities and helped develop the particular Balinese naif style of painting. Allegedly he and an Indonesian friend also choreographed the popular all-male Kecak Dance. Tourism at this time was almost totally new. In 1930, there were only about 100 visitors arriving each year. During his years on the island he hosted many famous artists, writers, musicians and actors, imparting to each the joys of living on the island and what it offered to Europeans like himself. Yet I wonder if it ever really was that exotic gay paradise. Was it in fact more a result of the increasing anti-homosexual propoganda coming out of Nazi dominated Europe that prompted Spies to stress Bali's freedoms for gay men? Or was it more sinister, for one writer has suggested that Spies was actually concealing the fact that he was a sexual predator seeking relationships with young Balinese boys? However true or otherwise, what is not in dispute, whatever Spies' motives, is that in 1938 he was arrested in a crackdown on homosexuals. Hauled before a judge for committing sodomy with a minor, the boy's father told the trial judge, "He is our best friend, and it was an honour for my son to be in his company. If both are in agreement, why fuss?" But Spies could not escape the law for long. Eventually convicted as a pedophile, he was being transported to Ceylon when his ship was sunk by a Japanese bomb in 1942. From what I have read, the Balinese obviously had a much more liberal outlook on things like nudity and sex, even though there were I undersand no gay bars as such when i was there. I once visited the studio of a nearby artist Antonio Blanco and all the young women assistants in his house were topless. Yet 30 years earlier the governor of Bali had banned photographs of topless women and young girls as views about western morality started to take hold. Were Balinese women finally shamed into covering up their breasts only because this was happening all over other parts of Indonesia? Even so I recall so vividly seeing men, young and old, going to a stream or water spigot around 5:00 pm after work, stripping off all their clothes and bathing themselves before returing home. One young man who was a regular at a spigot on the grounds of my guesthouse was a particularly glorious sight! I was once even on a DC10 leaving Bali for Hong Kong and seeing a young man strip off and dip into a stream near the runway! Scholars have written that homosexuality had existed as part of life in Indonesia for at least a thousand years. As in Thailand, there had been no word for homosexuality in Indonesian until the 20th century. Only around the 1970s did it become an accepted term for a certain type of sexual behaviour. There is an interesting book published in the 1970s "Jalan Sempurna" which gives graphic descriptions of the feelings between one 20-year old student for another of the same age. Even though it relates to another part of Indonesia, it is perhaps indicative of the feelings also of some men in Bali. Here is an excerpt – "I walked by the front of the Regent’s residence, intending to keep going past the railway station. But only a few steps after I passed the Regent’s residence, a young fellow suddenly stepped out of an alley. He looked to be about twenty years old, but was still in school, judging from the schoolbag that he, like me, was carrying. The second our eyes met, my heart started to pound. I felt as if the blood was hissing (berdesir-desir) through my body. 'Hey, why is your heart thudding like that?' I asked myself. Never in my life had it pounded so. And, at that moment, I lowered my head, puzzling over the beating of my heart . . . “'Why is he like this?' I thought to myself. I was sure that his desire was awakened. But why was I, too, aroused? Unmistakably, it was because his body was really amazing. Wherever I laid my hand, his skin felt so smooth and soft. Even though he was another boy, at whatever part of his body I looked, my desire and passion grew stronger. Especially, if I looked at his face. If I didn’t quickly lower my head, my desire would surely explode. I would surely lay my head by his. I longed to nibble at his lips and kiss them. His body was like silk to my touch. Even this morning when I first met him, my heart was already pounding, as if something was beating inside my chest." Bali's adherence to its own form of Hinduism is no doubt one reason why it was relatively isolated from the other islands of Indonesia and why it developed differently, including in terms of sexuality. But was it indeed a gay paradise then - or even now? I just do not know.1 point -
Should Biden run again. And, if not, what's Plan B?
Marc in Calif reacted to stevenkesslar for a topic
This was actually the last thread I started on Company of Men before the political forum involuntarily retired. (Maybe that answers my question about Biden? 🤫 ) So I thought it would be interesting to see how it goes here. Since a few of you already posted on this question over there, I also added the second part about Plan B. A lot of Biden supporters or sympathizers said he's a great guy. But his age is showing. So it's time for him to move on. Speaking as a Democrat, that begs a big question. How do we avoid electing Trump II, or Culture Warrior in Chief Ron DeSantis? My answer was, and is, YES. Biden should run again. I'll list three reasons. First, it increases the odds that we won't elect Trump or some other Culture Warrior In Chief. Some people think it's voodoo. But I overweight Alan Lichtman's Keys to the Presidency. It's a system he developed with a leading Russian seismologist geared toward using mostly objective data to detect patterns which help predict earthquakes - in this case, political earthquakes. Since 1984 he has guessed the winner of every Presidential election correctly, and months in advance. The other key component of his system is that he believes voters are smart. They make decisions based on things that matter: the economy, war and peace, major accomplishments, leadership, big scandals. So having the power of the incumbency and avoiding an intraparty brawl are two of the 13 things that help determine victory. He says once you lose six of these 13 keys, you're done. So this takes away two keys from the Democrats. Incumbency, for sure. And if Biden does not run, there will likely be a party nomination fight that could be very divisive. Second, the most likely outcome no matter what happens is Kamala becomes the new leader to face Don or Ron. Which is what lots of Democrats are afraid of. If you leave Biden out, the polls show she's the preference of up to 1 in 3 Democrats. The next tier - usually Sanders and Secretary Pete - are far behind. Like maybe 10 %. So who knows what will happen. But if Biden steps aside, the most likely outcome is she replaces him. On the other hand, if Biden/Harris wins and he dies of a heart attack in 2016, she replaces him. On the other hand, if they both serve out a second term, she'll run to replace him. All roads seem to lead to Kamala. Under any of these circumstances, I'm fine with her leading when the time comes. That said, like many Democrats, I'd rather not risk it now. We do know that in the last century there were six contested nominations in the party that held the Presidency. In all six cases, most recently Bush in 1992, that party lost. So it would definitely be better for Biden to step aside than to be forced out in a primary, like LBJ was. Third, I'm not sure I even understand the logic. Yes, he's old. If he were clearly senile, or a joke like George Santos, that would matter. But the idea among at least some Democrats goes like this. "You've won all these bipartisan legislative victories and done a great job. But you're too old." The first statement kind of disproves the second. With Ukraine, even moreso. Age - aka experience and relationships - did put Biden in a position to build a global coalition I don't think Trump, or someone younger like Kamala or Secretary Pete, could have built. The biggest fear is that Biden will lose us the 2024 elections. Like Trump lost lots of 2022 races for his election denying partners in crime. But if that's the fear, didn't Biden just help pull a rabbit out of a hat? Obama, who was younger and dynamic, lost 63 House seats in his first midterm. Biden lost 14, and gained a handful of Senate and Governor seats. One poll showed that, among Democrats, about half want Biden to run, about a quarter are not sure, and about a quarter are against him running. I think it's a given that, if he steps aside, anyone running to replace him will be less popular. And have less experience. How does that make winning in 2024 easier? I've never bought the idea that Biden was the only Democrat who could beat Trump in 2020. To go back to Lichtman, he says Presidential races are thumbs up or thumbs down votes on the party in power. Trump was going to lose, anyway, he said. So if we wanted someone else to lead the charge, 2020 was the time to fight that out. We did. And Biden won. A lot of this depends on your assumptions about other BIG THINGS THAT MATTER. If we're in a deep recession in Fall 2024 and Putin has won in Ukraine in a way that makes Biden look like a weak loser, Lichtman's system says Biden would probably have at least six keys against him, anyway. Which is enough to lose. If the economy and stock market are booming, and Putin lost or is barely holding on in Ukraine, Lichtman's system could suggest the Democrats have enough going for them to win, anyway. Then a younger President than Biden - presumably Harris, but maybe not - could win in 2024 and run as the incumbent in 2028. But his key point would be that losing an incumbent and inviting an internal party fight is simply not going to help, at best. At worst, it hands the Presidency back to Trump. Or the other Florida Culture Warrior In Chief. Should Biden run? And if he does step aside, what's the Plan B for the Democrats to keep the Presidency?1 point -

Pre Covid: Our Songkran used to start in Silom on the night of April 12th, at the time Twilight was still going strong and the party poopers on Soi 4 had not brought in their water ban. As soon as it hit around 23.00 the water would start to flow and Songkran would unofficially kick off. We would then spend the day of the 13th in Silom and move to Khao San road on the 14th, before heading to Pattaya that evening. Pattaya on the 15th was usually Soi 6/7/8 in the day time before heading to Country Road or Bamboo Bar in Jomtien, just in time to "terrorise" the Baht bus customers heading home from the beach. (Remember Songkran haters: one mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter!) 16 and 17 were usually quiet enough in Pattaya, except Soi 6/7/8, Soi Buakow and some play in Jomtien near Country Road/Bamboo Bar. Naklua was the place to be on the 18th and it used to be mobbed with gay boys out having fun and grabbing cocks at the same time they plaster powder on your face! A bag of beers is usually a handy thing to have with you for sharing with new friends. There was usually also an outdoor Morlam that night which again would turn to water chaos, especially as it is so hot, there is no option but to cool down! A lot of the gay boys stay up all that night, usually ending up on walking street which unofficially turns 24 hours for 1 night only. On the 19th it is of course all out madness all over the town with bumper to bumper traffic for miles, again we usually hit Soi 6/7/8 and Central before heading to Jomtien Complex for the festivities there... When i first started coming to Pattaya in 2001 it was guaranteed to rain at 19.00 on the 19th and all water play would stop, I remember wading home the roads were so flooded with rains, however the last few years pre-covid I noticed that water & powder play would continue on until the early hours of the 20th, especially in the late night venues Post Covid: Last year was a disaster with Covid and the water play ban, The "powder parties" in JC were fun last year, but not very good for your lungs! Who knows whether the authorities will once again make another water ban... But if they don't we will be repeating our traditions as much as we can!1 point

This is smart, especially with crime these days. I am currently in Brasil for Carnaval and I don’t even bother bringing my phone with me if I am going to walk in the street to attend a bloco street party. I do have a spare small android phone with me (Samsung S10e, 2019 release that had decent specs and still a decent camera) if my (fully insured) Iphone gets lots or stolen, but this is not just for Brazil but all my travels, as it is smart to have a spare as you don’t know what will happen and buying a phone overseas can gets expensive. Android does have less status than an Iphone in Brasil, so ultimately probably less likely to get stolen, but I think that won’t matter as thieves are desperate. Yes I was sad when Uber Eats left, but have found iFood to be a worthy alternative. I’ve been able to get my Chase Visa and Barclay US Mastercard credit cards to work with iFood, but not my Citicard or others. Very handy when it is 2 AM and your boy for the night suddenly gets the munchies post-coitus, and most restaurants are closed. There are a lot of currency exchanges, even on immediately after passing immigration, and then after you exit customs in Terminal 3 in Guarulhos. I try not to use them tho. High fees. I’ve used my fee-free ATM and the exchange rate is almost at par with market. I tend to use the “24 Horas” ATMs which are abundant in airports, metro stations in Rio and SP, and some upscale supermarkets. I’ve used Viator in Brazil and it was 100% safe and you get access to English speaking tour guides. Never used AirBNB Experiences anywhere but I am sure they tap into the same tourist companies. Protip: If you develop a good rapport with a boy in Brasil, why not let them be your guide? YMMV. From what I know you can ask the drug stores in the airports if they have SIM cards, but obviously the support and help with installs will be limited. Best bet is to do this at the big malls and go one of the big cellphone operators. I personally use a US SIM with unlimited international data coverage. There are esim options that you can download before you go to Brazil, but I have no experience with them. Yes this is the same in Brazil. I’m never in a towel and I always have some loose bills in the pocket of my shorts and can also pay guys that way. I am sure you will have a blast! Please let u know how you do and share your experiences here. I am sure everyone will appreciate a newbie’s perspective.1 point

Day 5 I did not mention I will be leaving soon and there was no need as in the morning he rushed to his day time job , just giving me enough time to have breakfast and pack up . I had that bottle of red wine I forgot to give CCP and presented her to my tuk-tuk driver who took me to airport. He was quite surprised that his quoted fare of 8 $ included getting bottle, lol. Hope he did not try it on his way back to the city. Sitting on the plane all emotions related to this affair left me , all of then sudden I realized I have 5 days free to roam fortified with 30000 baht CCP decided to leave in my pocket by pissing on our deal. At noon I was in Swampy already. Immigration was breeze. Hour later I was checking into Rose. It was my first time there and I liked what I saw. Super location in quiet corner steps from Suriwong, room with the view. Only thing I did not like was washbasin in the toilet, way too low. Clearly aimed at people much shorter than I’m. I went for a stroll and crossing Silom I spotted one of boys known to me with handsome farang. Because we exchanged few PMs on the subject of said guy I suspected I knew who farang is but they were in rush and I had blackout forgetting farang’s nick so did not stop them either. Later on fired PM to him to confirm it was him and it was a case indeed. So to 31 forum members I met I add one whom I just passed by chance, lol. G’bangkok in soi 4 was busy so I went for dinner to Happy Beer Garden greeted warmly by one of waitresses who by coincidence had birthday today as whispered by other waiter. So treated her with big bottle of Chang. Then to Hot Male beer bar, had few drinks with P , my first night stand and then decided to check Jupiter’s show. Bar was packed. As always boys were first class look but smiles lacking, nothing new here .After show and it was midnight I decided to leave passing by few their guys standing by the door including one quite muscular and handsome like hell. I was already outside when Guardian Angel pushed me back inside so I asked that guy about drink. We sat down and made deal very fast. Boy drink and off fee 950, gave mamasan 1000 baht note and couldn’t get a change so after few minutes decided to leave. If somebody will wonder why on my next visit or two at Jupiter I will not tip , there’s answer, that self service. Boy, J, was hungry and suggested modestly Foodland but inside was less modest ordering their most expensive dish, some steak. No harm done and Bon Appetit. In the room was very active and pleasant. World is coming to an end, another Jupiter off I’m so happy with. I never thought I will live that long! Too bad he did not want to stay till morning. Tipped him generously though as it was well deserved but as always I denied request for taxi money. What was supposed to be my last night in PP turned to be my first in Rose. Nice to be back in Bangkok, it took less than a day for me to get over and forget whole CCP debacle like it never happened.1 point

Day 1 Super long flight to Bangkok , as always I booked aisle seat in middle section in the last row because I noticed that it increases chance seat beside will be unoccupied and that bet was successful. Empty seat indeed , what is better, one of only 2 or 3 free seats in the whole 787-9. I don’t watch movies so had 4 books with me but it seems melatonin helped this time, not that I slept much but spent considerable part of flight in at least half sleep stage. So finished only book and half. Arriving in Bangkok in early morning, just as day broke , I hoped for short immigration lines but it was not a case as it looked few big planes dumped human load at the same time. Booths were staffed properly and while lines lengths were scary it moved quite fast. Normally I travel with carry on only but this time I had proper luggage – remember that promised suitcase to be given to my Cambodian Charming Prince.(CCP ) Reason was more prosaic though, this time both seat selection and 1 piece of luggage was included in price so I did not bother with economizing. Fate co-ordinated it nicely , as soon as I approached conveyor my suitcase popped out. Since my CCP reacts well to red wine by his own admission I carried 2 bottles for him in my luggage and was happy to find out they arrived intact. Early train to the city was surprisingly full from airport , visible sign tourism rebounded with vigor. Baan Silom was aware I will be late, I booked for night before as I wanted to be sure arriving early I will have bed and shower available and lady on reception greeted me “ You finally arrived “ . After desoiling myself I went to world famous UNESCO designated Foodland Patpong for an arranged breakfast with ChristianPFC who lavished on me SIM card and recently issued new Cambodian banknotes of 200 and 2000 riels – he knows I collect those. Then to XOne on Suriwong to exchange money, this trip I took care to compare rates on every exchange booth I passed by and XOne was consistently the best. Not by much but still the best. When packing we usually forget something , this time it was hat so from there I went straight to Silom market in soi 10 and bought new hat. I noticed that weather was very pleasant , in the morning even bit chilly and it lasted for more than a week, only in last 3-4 days of my stay temperatures and humidity rise noticeably. Returning to hotel on my way I booked an appointment for tomorrow at Dr. Smile on Silom as I have some repairs to be done. I use them for years. Of course Lined my CCP that I’m in Bangkok and confirmed my arrive after tomorrow asking him to pick me up as I rather pay him taxi fare than to some random guy. He confirmed immediately increasing my heartbeat right away. Can’t wait ! Jet lag gave some signals I should retire to my room so I did, Lined my Grindr masseur if he is interested in coming but unfortunately he hurt his back playing tennis and is out of commission for few weeks , even declined suggestion for just kissing / cuddling session afraid he may be hurt in process. Too bad as I like him a lot. But I have solution with V, he told me he is finishing work at 3 and will be in my room shortly after. I generously offered to help him to shower, offer visibly appreciated as soon as he undressed. Both tired ,me with trip , him with work we had good use of the bed until dark. Then we went to G’Bangkok in soi 4 for a well deserved dinner greeted warmly by the boss there and his crew. Time spent with V and dinner invigorated me very well so when he went home I started survey of bars with Hot Male beer bar first. I had hope P will go with me but they had shortage of staff tonight and I was told he will be available only when bar closes at 2am. So I left him there promising to pick him up later and went to Dreamboys hoping Oud veteran of several offs from Tawan and Jupiter who was seen there by spoon last month will be there but mamas an told me he is gone. But I eyed another veteran of multiple offs, Dit and had him sitting with me . Declined to buy him a drink opting for 500 tip instead. Bar probably was not happy but boy was and it’s what counts. I decided this trip , apart from time spent with CCP I will be back to butterflying , both bars and boys. Decision prompted by fact that I noticed on last trip some guys are starting taking me for more or less granted. Going forward this trip I made 3 well deserved exceptions but otherwise sticked to an original idea and I’m glad I did saving some money and making new discoveries in process. Then just before midnight I went by Moonlight where some guys sitting outside recognized me greeting warmly , I peeked inside but bar was emptying already so I decided to go to Banana Club in soi 4 , bar I neglected last few trips. They had show in progress , mainly ladyboys lip-syncing but I kind of had fun there. Mamasan Lucy was victimizing group of Chinese in the first row so I was left to my own devices inviting one of boys to seat with me for a feel and tip. One of their barkers outside is very handsome so I forced 100 baht on him signalizing an interest. At 1.30 I went to Patpong to pick up P from HotMale. In Oct I had feeling I may be his first customer , now obviously he is more brave and we had good time , so good that in the morning I upped his promised tip by 500 I think bit out of guilt. Guilt because my mind is in Phnom Penh with CCP, sorry but it is.1 point

I rather be smart than smart enough but I need to live with what I have , lol Yes , my naivety in this case is controlled , I know what I can give and what behavior I can take and built ways of escape, both in the open and hidden. yes and no. I take seriously all warning signs and take precautions watching my back and having escape routes. But yes ,I want and hope for deal to go through. Knowing myself for quite a while I know I wouldn't forgive myself if I did not try in this case. It's why I invested in tickets and send him that 200 $. But I'm not desperate , it's why I took risk of denying 2nd requested installment exactly for reason somebody mentioned above - I want to see some action first. Those 3 days in PP should clear waters either way so I'm excited but also prepared for disappointment and indeed for trouble. I also start worrying about potential problem if everything will go well indeed - how to keep him entertained in those 5 days in Bangkok. Found already well equipped gym nearby as he is fitness buff. Truth is I don't know him other than three nights of drinking in the bar with some discreet under the table action. But it's also his case for me - he doesn't know me as well and may keep in mind fate of those who were taken as toy boy and dumped with nothing. Several years ago it was guy in Tawan who was taken as trophy boy to Malaysia for a month , was treated well, dining shopping partying , all expenses paid. But at end of stay was sent back with 3000 baht total for all that trouble. No doubt cases like that are on boy's minds.1 point
