First time trip report- please be kind. Arrived Thursday night/Friday morning. Flight was uneventful and we landed at BKK at about midnight. Took about 20 mins through immigration and bags were already rolling out. Picked up my bag and went to get a cab. Stall number 46 was my guy, and away we went. The driver was hauling ass most of the ride, and then slowed down to a crawl on the mostly empty highway. I realized he didn't know how to get to The Raya- (thanks Vinapu), despite me showing him the address in Thai. I whip out google maps and then direct the ride for the final 20 mins. Upon arrival, I suggest the driver should pay me since I did the navigation. He didn't think this was quite as funny as I did, but I tipped him well so all was forgiven. Checked in, checked the apps, and passed out. Friday- I decided to walk around to see what had changed since the pandemic. I walked past Green Massage to see if my guy was still there. Seated in the back and left alone by the managers, and there were probably 25 other customers inside. There were a few guys that would be fine, but as it was early, I paid the outrageous sum of 500 baht for my beer, and ventured over to Hotmale upstairs. Only 4 other customers there. But i ordered a beer and there were some cuties for sure. One guy caught my eye, number 32. Cambodian guy, super cute, gay, and speaks good English! Score! You'll have no problem bringing guests back to Amara. Have stayed there numerous times in the past. Walk to Patpong in less than 10 minutes. Rooms are on the compact side but very comfortable, well appointed and spotless. The rooftop pool is great and there's a gym on one of the higher floors. Buffet breakfast very good. TIP: join their frequent guest program before reserving for member only rates.

Recently, I took a taxi from the airport to the Jomtien Complex and we ended -up exploring parts of that fair city ( in the dark) which I didn't know existed after the driver got lost. Heaven knows where we ended-up, a frustration after twelve hours in the plane. "Jomtien Complex!" I repeatedly cried which , when he used his google sounded like....well, I don't know what but it certainly had nothing to with Jomtien. Or Complex. Eventually, I said to him "Talay! Talay" (the sea), and even though my Thai pronunciation is worse than his English, we arrived.

If i might add to these, always check higher tier rooms from the hotels in the list below. Often, upgrading to one or two tier up is not much but the upgrade is often really great. Ill add furama silom also in the list below. A superior there though same size as the deluxe, will left u with a lower floor room with outdated furniture and small bahtroom with shower only. While a deluxe will gives u fully renovated new furnitures, design, and much bigger bathroom with bathtub and glass wall plus your room will be on the higher floor with better view. In the case of raya, the grand deluxe suite will have a separate living and kitchennete, while the suite will have a full size fridge and microwave as well on top of being much bigger in size. In zing, their pool suite will have a one bedroom, oversize living area and direct pool access on the ground floor. The deluxe plus option will give u a smallish balcony but the most important upgrade is the luxurious queen bed, which felt like the one in say meridien or hilton hehe. Ambiance penthouse have separate living area and terrace outside with view of the boyztown downstair. All of this upgrades usually still cost less than the price of the cheapest room in say meridien or hilton.

and that's the best course of action, get out and try next one for which we rarely need to wait more than 113 seconds. The same thing j happened to me at end of my Nov trip going to airport. Taxi called by hotel was refusing meter and demanding 500, I got out , next one showed up in 17 seconds and the rest is just described above ( about 300+ tolls)

Annoyingly now that the tourists are back in numbers the taxi drivers are back to refusing to put on the meter and demanding 200 Baht for a 70 Baht trip, so annoying. It happened to me three times last week when I was in Bangkok. I simply get out and wait for the next one and try again. I always tip well so it is their loss.

New or not new - how to define this bar?? I get an invite in Hornet to come to the "new" Zoomer Bar, which is found in the small alleyway (behind the Bamboo bar) where the D.D. Inn is in Jomtien, near Beach road. If you know where the Pirate Bay Cafe is - it is in that alley way right after the D.D. Inn is located. I asked around about the history of this bar before going and everyone told me - no, that is a Lady bar - as that alleyway is known for that. So, after visiting the Pattaya fireworks last night, I asked my Thai friend to accompany me there. As I am new here - I don't know the history and backstory like many of you more senior experienced members. We met with the 2 gay guys, who are brothers, (the ones who sent me invites on Hornet) who are manager bar workers there. I ask them if I can interview them as it was confusing to me what kind of bar this is and why is it outside of the Jomtien Supertown Complex? He points to a "Lady" and tells me that she is the owner and that previously this was a Lady bar. The 2 brothers talked her into repurposing the bar into a gay bar - which they are now doing. By the way, they are ALL from Isaan - hence the common connection between all of the staff. He said that if they had put their bar in Supertown - then their clients would not have the privacy that they can have in this hidden location. It made me wonder - privacy for what? We did not see any hankypank (sleezy behavior) taking place. Perhaps it gets more interesting later in the night ?? We were there around 10:30pm. Anyone have any additional information?

I arrived yesterday to Rio. Both flights were packed with no one single seat available. I had been flying for several years in the extra room class, but this time I did it in regular tourist class. The drop in quality service was remarkable (American). In the flight from Miami to Rio they did not even serve breakfast, and I think they did not do it not even in first class. I have a good sense of smell, and I did not smell any coffee or bakery being reheated. In the hope of having a free seat next to me, I booked the 13 row. It did not work. To make it worse, apparently it did get me bad luck. My rolling bag handler broke and (before boarding in DC my flight to Miami) I ended checking the bag to move comfortably in Miami. I will buy a new bag here. More airport bad luck. I was planning to settle in Rio's Admirals Club to telework, as my airbnb check in was at 3pm. Well, the Admirals Club was closed until 3pm, and the other VIP lounge I found would not take my Mastercards or visas to purchase a day pass. Remember, I was carrying my backpack and my bag formerly known as rolling. The most comfortable place I found was a Starbucks. So I spent my first hours in Rio sitting in a USA chain. Close to my check in time I called an Uber and was in my airbnb in Copacabana at 2:55. The place was not ready, the host was still cleaning up the mess left by the previous guests. He came down to pick me up about 3:30, and I was able to finish my teleworking in my unit while he was finishing the cleaning. The apartment is better than it looks in the website's pictures, so I am happy with that. Additionally, an extra surprise that made this airbnb really extraordinarily good. I chose it because of its location, just a few blocks away from Point, my favorite local GP sauna. However, is better than that. When I was in the lobby, Rhyheim Shabazz texted me and we found out that I rented my little one BR in the 13th floor, while he had rented a huge top roof apartment to host his collaborators and film while in Rio. This is only my 4th visit to Rio, and although it is a fact that I feel at home and comfortable, it is also a fact that I do not know the city well. If you have walked your way to Point walking up Siquiera Campos from the beach, you know that shortly after the Atlantico Hotel, Siqueira curves towards the left, and another street starts following Siqueira previous straight trace. It was raining, I was in semi zombi status after my poor sleeping during the flight, and I took the wrong turn. Soon I realized that I was walking into a favela. I loved it. I walked up to the 700s in the hope of finding a perpendicular street cutting down back to Siquiera, but at the 800s I decided to turn around not because I was scared, but because the slop was very acute and I was sweating like a pig. I wonder what could have happened if I looked like a tourist, which I do not. Everyone seemed super friendly and greeting me with a smile. I turned back and I loved walking down after the demanding climbing. When I was close to the sauna the rain got worse and I could see the boys running away from the blue entrance, so I canceled my sauna plans and went back to my nest. This was my first Loy Krathong as a new retiree living here - so I was one of those thousands, with my two Thai friends, who helped me to launch my Loy Krathong into the sea -->> BUT - we had to first follow the correct Thai ritual of: 1.) cut a piece of your hair and place it into the Loy Krathong flower piece made of banana, 2.) insert some loose coins into your Loy Krathong, 3.) light the candle that is in the center of the flowers, 4.) light the incense sticks that are also in the center of the flowers, 5.) say a prayer before launching your Loy Krathong into the water (expressing what you are happy to be relieved of - negative things - and what positive things you want to come into your life). Then you are ready to go. I was not dressed properly, so I had to take my shoes and socks off, and because of the shorts that I was wearing, I could not get out far enough into the water to properly launch my Loy Kratong for enough distance that it would not be washed back ashore (bad luck). There were some kids out in the water and after we launched our 3 Loy Krathongs (see below photo), they approached ours and pushed them further out to sea - and I was SO happy about that - but there was a hidden service charge - they quickly removed all of the loose coins that we had placed in our respective Loy Kratong's (see step 2 above). I became upset, but my 2 Thai friends said to me, "stay calm - these kids are very poor and they deserve what they took and you should know that it does not invalidate the above 5 steps - so our good wishes will still come to us." I am a new retiree here - so I need to learn so much about the Thai Buddhist ways - sabai sabai.... But, for my year 2023 Loy Krathong - I will be much better prepared.

Then why you want to cut short your time in Bangkok, which offers so many things to do and see? If you want to do that with Thai guy on your side, you would have a much higher chance of meeting a good one in Bangkok, where there are plenty of educated guys with excellent English skills. Much fewer from that category in Pattaya.
