Saturday I was resting in hotel room. I felt better at night so I went to Dreamboys for the show but with mask on. I only removed my mask when I sipped my orange juice. No beer because I was taking medication. Dreamboys is the only bar which I have not visited during this trip. I visited Dreamboys at its previous location next door in June. I have fond memories of Dreamboys current premises. It used to be Lucky Boys pre-Covid and I had offed many guys from there. I was seated alone at the left side and in front row so I could see the guys on stage as well as the audience. All the seats were occupied by the time the show started at 10.30pm but people were not squeezed in together (like in Moonlight) so there was still ample seating available. I reckon 75% capacity. VIP circular seats were filled by regular customers with bottle service and guys entertaining them. Many tourists especially couples (both gay and straight) on Christmas Eve. I even saw an Asian gentleman directly opposite me. He had two companions - twinks and I believe they are waiters from Freshboys! He ordered a bottle of whisky for himself and his clingy twinky companions. During the show, he tipped his favourite performers with 100 baht and a shot glass of whisky which his companions helped pour on his behalf and offer to performers. Many many guys on stage in white shorts. Between 30 to 40 but I would not be offing any. I don't want to get anyone infected and falling sick on my account and hence not being able to work next day and losing income etc. Mixed group of guys. There are about 5 of them I would have offed. Show started at 10.30pm with coyote dancing. 9 guys dancing in rotation with tempo getting faster and music getting louder. Fabulous start but things went downhill after that with ladyboy diva singing and not-very-erotic big-cock shows. There was the moustache guy in spandex and heels that I had read about in a forum member's report. Interesting performance but not my cup of tea. The performances went smoothly without much of a wait-time in between (unlike Jupiter and Moonlight). Show was 40 minutes long and ended at 11.20pm and all the guys came up on stage again. I said hi to the Hotmale beer bar 1st floor waiters and explained why I had not been there on Thursday and Friday nights. "OMG. Are you feeling better now?" one of them asked me. Yes, definitely, but no beer. And with that, I made my way back to hotel room, a Christmas Eve to forget.

I once was the first customer in Screw Boys (currently still closed) and Eros (closed for good) and enjoyed the experience the see the boy arrive and change (that's the important part) under white light, without the boys paying any attention to me. However have to know the bar and get the timing right, in other bars I had a look, no boys, waiter invited me for drink, boys will come soon; no thanks, I will look somewhere else. I made that mistake once, in Chiang Mai about 8 years ago, pay full price for a drink and look at an empty stage for half an hour, slowly realizing my mistake.

Day 4 That’s my last day, time for charity so after morning gymnastics and breakfast at Unesco I told my companion that today I won’t have much time for him so he needs to fend for himself or he can return to Pattaya tipped for both yesterday and today. In meantime I invited Sam , guy I offed LT from New Twilight in May and who joined me and other member for trip to Grand Palace next day to have a drink with me. He was disappointed when I told him I’m busy tonight and leave for good tomorrow. Who would not be , seeing ATM shaped as KFC man departing ? I tipped new guy on the stage who shortly came to say thank you , we had a chat as well, turned out he is Pinoy, first Filippino guy I met in Thai bar as stage boy. Very talkative so hope he will be there next time I'm. When A showed up suggested some dinner at Unesco which he named Foodland so off we went , I just had crème Brulé still being full after G’Bangkok. We had fun till 3 am including our customary show of force which I always loose, no chance with such muscled guy but always surprise him that is not that easy to fight old guy. He was gone , I quickly packed little I had and started trek home. Friendly receptionist offered he will stop taxi for me and indeed one just showed up visibly being parked in hotel’s parking. It was not long trip as driver suggested 500 fare , when I pointed at meter he said “no’ countered with mine “ stop” , right in front of Raya. 90 second later another taxi showed up , this time no problem. In airport it was smooth and soon I was in the air, leaving Thailand for 25th time ending month long trip taking 3 countries and including 3 visits in Thailand. It was good idea to spent relatively busy and certainly sleepless good part of night with A as I felt bit tired and actually had some sleep on the plane, rare feast for me. It was also first time ever I flew JAL and must say their excellent reputation is fully deserved. Summary of the trip will come tomorrow

What happens when you owe a lot of money and have run out of cash in the Land of Smiles? The most recently publicized case is Wolverhampton social worker Jo Hoffman whose face is smashed after a horrible scooter accident. The estimated medical bill is 50,000 pounds with only a third so far raised via gofundme, the best-known crowd cash-raising platform. Her case is far from unique as a cursory glance at Google will reveal. 2022 is the worst year in recent memory. There are currently at least seven British accident casualties awaiting collective cash to get back home together with a mortuary corpse. Not to mention two much-loved dogs who somehow missed their flights from Bangkok airport. And the tragedies are not only medical. Thai immigration police are refusing to let a healthy Liverpool tourist leave the country until he offers compensation to a comatose Thai driver injured in a skid accident which appears to have been nobody’s fault. Understandably, victims and their relatives turn to the British embassy. Not much joy there. British government websites make it abundantly clear that there is no cash handout, or even a loan, no matter how desperate the situation. Diplomatic posts will offer a list of hospitals, translators and morticians and even phone relatives with the bad news, but there is a concrete zero budget for hard-luck stories no matter how grim. To be fair, other embassies sing from the same hymn sheet although a few – notably the Norwegian – offer far better counseling and care. The parrot call, of course, is to be properly insured when abroad. Nobody knows how many travelling Brits are uninsured or inadequately covered. Global Protection says it’s around a third, some say a half. The vulnerable total certainly runs into hundreds of thousands every year. Some like Jo Hoffman thought they were covered by credit card travel insurance, only to discover the truth too late. Others fail to pay the premiums to cover emergency operations or fall foul of restrictions which preclude the elderly from claiming. Not to mention catchall phrases like “pre-existing conditions”, “evidence of alcohol or drugs”, “dangerous sports” or “high horsepower vehicles” which can doom even the most expensive policies. Thailand does not insist on prior medical insurance except for one or two longstay visas. That’s true of most of her regional competitors for the tourist dollar. No mandatory insurance for the Philippines, Cambodia or Laos for example. All these countries, including Thailand, did require Covid-specific insurance during the pandemic but no longer. They are currently in competition to pack in as many visitors as possible in the name of marketing. Thailand does have a small discretionary fund for unfortunate foreign deaths on its soil, but it is limited to selected coach crashes and sunken vessels. Realistically, nothing will change. Of course, chances of any individual ending up on the gofundme register are remote. But stuff happens.

Good morning! Merry Christmas to all. And what do I do first thing? I come and check this forum. It's like opening Christmas presents (in lieu of the fact that nobody gives me Christmas presents anymore ) It's a bit sad, actually. Anyway, I notice that so far neither of us have referenced the post we're discussing. It is this one: The gogo business: untapped potential The question is: what percentage of gay male visitors to Thailand would be open to buying sex? I used an assumption of 20% in my post, but @10tazione thinks 5%. It could well be, but my sense is that while it may be 5% or even 3% when one is in one's home city, when one is in a foreign country with a much higher degree of anonymity, the percentage goes up. Does it go up to 20%? Or to 15%.... we can only guess. I agree that even if there is X percent who are open to buying sex while in Thailand, it doesn't mean that all the X percent will buy, and do so once a day. So, here's another variable. What fraction of this X percent will actually buy each day? I think, if the bars and massage parlours market themselves well and price themselves attractively (within cost reasons) we can easily find half or more of that X percent converting interest/desire to actual purchase each day. That the bars and massage parlours are nowhere near getting half through their doors tells us that they are not marketing themselves as well as they should. Businessmen, if they have a mind to, can make time, especially in the evenings, for bars and offs. I used to travel quite a bit on business to many countries and I can say this with confidence. Often, they extend their stays an extra day or so to "unwind" from the stress of the business meetings. Not far from their minds is that a business trip is an expenses-paid trip. They're hardly spending any of their personal money, and thus to them throwing unspent money in bars and on boys and girls barely hurts the pocket. In our very own Silom-Surawong area, Thaniya Road is a good example. The scene there rose on the backs of Japanese businessmen.

Another partial explanation of the good behavior of English fans in Qatar is that the trip there was rather expensive in terms of the airfare and accommodation. Generally more affluent people who could afford it, don’t cause trouble. Trouble at soccer events involving them has occurred in European Cities, which are cheap to travel. There was no trouble during the 2018 World Cup held in Russia. I think there they had a fear of being sent to Siberia !. However I don’t disagree that the lack of cheap booze was a major factor.

And to clarify. There are plenty of khmer boys who show up in Pattaya or BKK not speaking a word of English. Ages months later they are full of chat. At the same time their local contemporaries are still on 'what your name'

@10tazione I am glad you're taking up the challenge to think through these issues. Indeed my numbers are basically back-of-the-envelope estimates, so they are certainly open to debate. On the two questions you had: 1. I believe you're saying my estimate that tourists spend about half their days in Bangkok and half outside Bangkok, is too generous to Bangkok. I tried looking for data as to room nights in Bangkok versus room nights outside Bangkok but couldn't find them. In any case, I wasn't sure they'd be any good even if I did find them, because room nights data would almost surely include domestic tourists, rendering the numbers pretty useless when we're talking about foreign tourists. However, it is useful to imagine how a typical tourist who spends typically nine days in Thailand would divide his time. It's quite easy to imagine him spending a few days outside Bangkok e.g. Chiangmai or Pattaya in the middle of his holiday, but spends the first few nights and the last few nights in Bangkok, for convenience vis-a-vis Suvarnabhumi airport. I accept that there are tourists who fly directly to Chiangmai or Phuket and spend their whole vacation in the respective regions, but the Chiangmai numbers are small, the the Phuket numbers strongly seasonal. Counterbalancing that, there are plenty of business visitors who spend all their days in Bangkok and never leave the city. On balance I came to the estimate that about half the room nights of foreign visitors are probably spent in Bangkok. If you're a white farang, you need to resist the tendency to imagine the "typical tourist" as someone like you. The simple fact is that the majority of tourists coming to Thailand are Asian. They make relatively short trips of a week or slightly more and their interests centre around food, entertainment and shopping. 2. I believe you're saying that the rough figure of 20% of gay male tourists in Bangkok who are open to buying sex is too high an estimate. What do you think the percentage is likely to be? Note: I say "open to buying sex", not "actually buying sex." In fact, I emphasised in my blogpost that many of them are still not buying (my casual observation). Thus the point in my post - that the bars are not maximising their potential. There is discussion above about gay visitors in the closet, or too proud to buy. I have allowed for this - they're among the 80 percent who I reckon are not open to buying sex. Is 80 percent still too little? Do we think that maybe 90 or 95% are not at all open to the possibility of buying sex? My observation is that the actual number of sex purchases by tourists is significantly lower than that. Thus the point of my post: In the sex business, there is quite a bit of upside potential among the tourists who are already in Thailand, but the potential is not properly exploited by the businesses. The question is: what's putting these tourists off?

This statement is SO true. I was formerly one of those "too proud" to consider the idea of paying for an off. It was thanks to this forum in my early years here that I realized that I could maximize my sexual pleasure by paying for the experience - as I discovered that by being the consumer / buyer of said services - that I could construct the menu and program of what I wanted to do with my offs. This is SO much more harder when you are chasing free guys - to get your menus and program desires to match up. Once I discovered the joy of having what I want - almost always - I never turned back to being "too proud". And when I hear of proud non-paying guys bitch and complain that they are not getting what they want - I suggest that they get over the embarrassment of paying for it to almost immediately find what they are looking for, where they waste much less time and effort of the endless hunting for unsatisfactory sex.

I'm sad to report that the Wildlife Development Center reports that the baby elephant being treated for injuries and kidney failure has died. Many readers were moved by the account of efforts to save the animal which had been found abandoned and airlifted to the center for treatment. The around the clock care staff and volunteers provided assured the calf that it was not alone as it struggled for life. To me, that is in keeping with the true message of the holidays. As we all get older, I think we pray that we're not alone and abandoned when our time is accomplished.

I did some research for this scenario earlier in the year. This seemed a helpful website, although others may have more personal experiences. Gogo bars - I think in total 50 - 60 offs per night in high season. How do I get this estimate? In the bigger bars (Dream Boy, Jupiter, Moonlight) about 10 boys per night. If we watch the room carefully, we may see about 3 boys taken out each hour (4, at a stretch). Multiply this by 3 hours (10pm to 1 am) and we get 9 - 12 offs. I round it off to 10. Smaller bars (Fresh, Hotmale, Banana) I think 5 offs a night. I haven't sat long enough in Tawan to estimate whether it's more like a bigger bar or a smaller one. Add them all up and we get 50 - 60 offs a night from all the gogo bars. Massage parlours - difficult to estimate since we seldom see other customers around when we visit. However, the fact that we seldom see other customers can also mean that there are not that many. When I ask around, however, I do find that visitors to Thailand buy from massage parlours at least as often as from gogo bars. So, if I really have to hazard a (wild) guess, I'd say 80 - 100 massage bookings a day from tourists. When I do see other customers in massage parlours, they are more often than not a local Thai. This is also noteworthy. The parlours continue to get custom from locals whereas the gogo bars (in Bangkok, at least) have lost all their local customers. In fact, outside of the Silom Road and Surawong Road cluster, I think the majority of massage customers e.g. in Saphan Khwai or Plukjit are local. I say this is interesting because it shows how bad the gogo bars are that they can lose a whole section of the market. Apps? - even more difficult to estimate, but just about everyone I know tells me it's more trouble than they are worth, in a country with an unfamiliar language.

Sorry @vinapu but you cannot seriously consider that currency exchange is anything compared to a requirement for travel insurance? Having insurance to cover your own health is vital if you don't want to end up dying on someone's couch (as happened to one poster on this Board) or on a park bench.

I am just in my day two, and I do not see a reason to try something that may make me uncomfortable. it may be something in what you say, it's why I always say let the owners run the business and let the boys to decide what is economically beneficial to them. I'm personally not worried about those calculations as I have mine - all I need is one bar open and one boy I like inside of that bar.

I take an Airbnb apartment and stay exclusively in Bangkok for 30-day minimum. Have been coming to Thailand for 20 years and have done my share of traveling throughout the region. I've come to know bkk and chose to spend all of my time there (I acknowledge I'm in the minority). As for the number of gay international tourists, your estimate is better than mine. As for the number of gay local residents, I wouldn't hazards a guess. My experience is that many men--from throughout East Asia--who'd never identify as "gay" will on occasion engage in sex with men. That's one of the reasons I keep returning. From the owners' business standpoint, drinks represent their main income source. Off fees are a distant second. For the performers, it's just the opposite, as you suggest. How a customer decides whether to off a guy varies. Personally, I make that that decision early on based on one simple criteria (does he smile specifically at me more than once) and one slightly complex factor (a combination of curb appeal and sexiness that translates into the promise of a satisfying experience). Since I've been doing this for many years, I've tweaked the methodology to an automatic response that's more instinctive than objective.

Wow same symptom for me last November. I was lucky enough the boy I just offed long stay insisted to come back to take care of me. Lovely and caring. No doubt some will disagree with me, but I think Thailand should make travel insurance mandatory with quite high minimum limits on the policies. Indeed, i think every country should do the same. It is highly irresponsible for any individual to travel to any country without ensuring your health is protected and you personally are protected finacially from any hurt you may inflict on third parties. Travel policies are not an expensive addtion to over all travel costs. And for regular travellers, annual policies are proportionally even cheaper. For my recent 17 day trip to Taipei, full travel insurance arranged through my bank (which effectively subcontracts through Chubb), cost less than 1,000 baht.

Yes I agree. They act as a large anchor store in a shopping mall - pulling customers to that end of the Complex. In this way, both main entrances to the Complex have some action. The street where the East Suites / Thai Blind Massage is too quiet - something interesting needs to move into that street to give it some life. I would love to see a place where we can dance - even a tea dance - for us who can't last beyond midnight in some far away dance club. Plus, it would help give us an alternative to the Complex mantra of, "Falang sit down - falang drink..." I find this desired behavior by our Thai hosts b-o-r-i-n-g and puts us into a geriatric state of mind. I would love to open a bar or dance place with the name = "Falang can dance...." - let us have some energetic fun instead of just focusing on B-I-N-G-O !!!! There will be plenty of time to sit-down and play Bingo later on.....
