I fear it would now be very boring. I visit Taipei primarily to meet my friends, eat Taiwanese food which I love, go regularly to hot springs which I find a wonderful experience, and do a bit of sightseeing around Taipei. I agree with you. I went a step further - I want to a lamination shop (photo copy store) in Pattaya and they took my passport and copied both the ID page as well as the VISA stamp page. So, the end result is a laminated ID card with my passport photo ID on one side and my VISA stamp on the other side. I had 2 of them made (one as a backup) and I walk around with one of these and the actual passport stays in my room safe. I always carry a copy of the Id page of my passport whilst in Thailand, as I believe carrying the actual document risks losing it or having it stolen. Oh yeah, the old Rainbow sauna in Taipei. Brings back good memories. I went there a few times during my first visit to Taiwan in 2011. Good advice about Commander D (or just CD as local boys call it). I would also recommend another bar called the Hunt, especially on their towel night. You pretty much are given a towel when you get in and that's how you go around the bar. They have a dark room, which gets really steamy:). Two observations if I may please, I think we can get far too hung-up about the term 'boy', it is universally used in Pattaya to describe the young males who work in bars, clubs etc., in just the same way that 'girl' is universally used to describe female staff/workers. I will explain more why this is my last trip at the end of my trip summary! Huang Ding was great for those seeking sex. It closed a few years ago having violated several laws over water quality. Most younger gays now go to a hot spring further down the hill named Huang Tzu. Entrance pre-covid was NT$250 (US7.80). If that has changed, I'll update on my return at the end of the month. My Taipei friends tell me it's almost the only one that attracts mostly gays. Bear in mind that it is not gay as such and there are signs (only in Chinese) warning against any hanky panky in the steam room. Hot springs are often family affairs and I have seen fathers bring their young kids to Huang Tzu. The springs are fantastic for relaxing and seeing a host of totally naked young guys who have no hang ups about covering their dicks. I have found many are quite friendly and will happily chat with you if - as most seem to do - they speak some English. In all the times I have visited, I have seen at most 3 foreigners there whereas when it's busy at the weekends there can be 100 Taiwan guys. It's unlikely the taxi will take you all the way down. It will probably stop at a car park but it will only be about 80 meters down the hill on your left. 5 large pools, a small sauna, larger steam room. If you have been there before, you can take a bus up the hill for about 4 kms. If not, then don't even risk it as you will have no idea when to get off. It's quite dark up there. You then have to walk quite a way down the hill to the hot spring area. Best to take the subway Red Line to Shipai station, exit on the right in the direction the train is going and you will find a taxi rank just there. There are almost always taxis unless it is pissing with rain. Show him this card and he will take you up there. Fare will be around NT$150 (US$4.70). Remember that you will need 2xNT$10 coins for the locker and its key. You will also need to bring a smallish towel to dry yourself in the changing room before you leave. And a bottle of water is almost essential as you soon feel a bit dehydrated in the springs. Make sure that is outside your locker before you close it!! Leaving the hot spring you will have to walk up a very steep hill to the main road. There is a phone at reception for patrons to call a taxi. But as the instructions are in Chinese and it's unlikely the person answering the call will speak English, I have always just walked. But it's a tough slog! Or waited and hoped to get a taxi which will have delivered someone to the hot springs area.

My visit was on Friday, Nov. 4 at about 9 PM. On arrival there were no customers inside and no boys on the stage. Myself and 2 others arrived and were later joined by one other customer for a total of 4. After finishing our drink the three of us left. Four boys did get on the stage and danced; one did then join me for a drink. The other customer remained. I don't recall if seeing any other customers sitting outside.

I think another trip to Thailand is on the cards, but I'd like to visit somewhere new - perhaps Taiwan or Japan. Other than that, just staying healthy and maybe working on my fitness as it is usually ignored..

I'm a regular visitor to Taipei, usually 4 times a year pre-covid. Back next week for 16 days. For sauna, @hojacat is 100% correct. The only one worth visiting is Soi13in. Unlike @fedssocr, I find travelgayasia frequently disappointing and often inaccurate. For Soi13in it states it used to be called Rainbow. That's just not true. There was never a sauna in that location before. Rainbow was certainly a large sauna but the Taiwan guys who went there had an 'attitude' and foreigners were not always welcomed by other patrons. It was in a very different part of the city much closer to The Red House and closed several years ago. I believe the owners then opened Soi13in but the two are like chalk and cheese. Many twinks and many bottoms there. Take your own condoms and lube. There are other smaller saunas but frankly you could spend hours looking for them. For one night, just go to Soi13in. The easiest way to get there is the subway to Shuanglian on the Red Line (direction Tamshui), turn north-east out of the station and walk to the main road. Take the underpass, keep walking straight ahead and you will soon see it on your left as when you come to a left fork in the road. Never had a massage but I read on other forums that happy endings are not always possible and often are restricted to HJs. Best to check espeically if you want full service. The Red House is rather like gay central but forget about there being clubs there. It is almost entirely cafes, bars and restaurants. Great for eye candy especially on Friday and Saturday evenings. Easy to get to by subway - exit 1 at Ximen station. There are no gogos similar to those you will find in Thailand. There is one leather bar not far from The Red House called Commander D. It also has a small stage and a dark room. But that is totally dark and so make sure you have no valuables on you if you enter. Getting around is easy IF you know where you are going. The subway is extensive and cheap. Taiwan gay guys are some of the loveliest and friendliest in Asia. But please be polite. Remember too that many gay guys go out with friends rather than solo and so in the bars it is sometimes less easy to find guys looking to meet up with a westerner. That's where the apps come are more useful. Change your photo and profile to taipei a few days before you arrive. Also remember that Blued is very popular in Taiwan. Money boys are not usual on the apps. Mostly it is younger Taiwan guys looking to spend time with westerners. MBs will usually tell you very soon after you start chatting. If you offer money to a non MB, it's possible this will might be regarded as an insult.

I stayed at the Raya in April 2021. I liked the hotel a lot. Cheap (although i think prices have gone up a bit now that it is busier) and pretty comfortable. It is probably mid range. There is, or certainly wasn't when I was there, a dining room so no breakfast options. I stayed in the Grand Deluxe Room which was really big - 45 sqm? They also had a policy for late check out with rate for additional time displayed at reception. My return flight was quite late in the day so being able to buy a few extra hours for really not very much additional cost was really welcome. They were still doing some work somewhere in the hotel when I was there although I think it was nearly all done. I understand that the policy of entering via the car park is still in force at night. For me, it really wasn't a problem. There was a security guy on 'duty' but he barely looked up from his phone, let alone questioned or made anything awkward. Absolutely no problems whatsoever. I think it is a great option if the budget doesn't stretch to a more high end option.

Now with years of experience and being able to read Thai, no problem finding these places. Most of them are placed correctly on googlemaps (only if the name is only in Thai a problem for the average tourist - and indeed, that's the problem, Home Spa is in Thai only on google maps). Street view helps a lot to confirm location (for my general travel satellite image as well). In all cases in OP, the numbers refer to the alley, but often do not mean the massage place is in that alley, but near the entrance, or even across the main road. In Thailand, soi numbers are even on one side of the main road, odd on the other side. There might be sois with slash, e.g. there are Silom Soi 22, followed by 22/1, followed by 26 (24 missing?). The odd and even get out of sync, e.g. Silom Soi 15 is opposite Soi 22/1. In Thailand and Cambodia, I always found a sign, in some cases small, with the name of the shop. Only in Myanmar did I have to ask locals to show me the way or call the shop for directions, once I got to where it was supposed to be but no sign.

My understanding is that "high season" came out of the larger number of visitors from Europe and North America escaping their winters. Many were retired even then, and were able to spend three months, mostly in Pattaya. It's similar to how flights from Russia are resuming for the next 3 - 4 months. It really has nothing to do with choosing to go during the busier or costlier period. The arrow of causation is the other way around. Winter in Europe >> more visitors to Thailand >> higher prices and busier places. Living in Australia, you may be able to count yourself lucky in that you do not have a long, damp or cold winter to escape from. Those of us like me who still have to work cannot afford to spend three whole months on vacation. We pop into Thailand for relatively short visits of perhaps 2 weeks at various times of the year. I have never really "participated" in High Season - at least not in the sense of being part of a migratory community.
