Day 4/5/6: Less to describe these days, as work has begun. I have had to reduce the exploring to accommodate. Have stuck to the apps and had some repeats, rather than going into the thick of the bars. Day 4 I rustled-up a delightful non-MB local on Scruff, who was a bonus excellent conversationalist, with plenty in common to talk about. Day 5 I organised a repeat with K, the particularly good masseur from day 3. He showed up ready for everything, as requested, and was an absolute delight. I might even go back for thirds… Day 6 Work but then also went and had dinner at what is apparently an offshoot of Gaggan, a hatted restaurant that people back home are telling me I have to try. This one was called Ms Maria and Mr Singh, in Ekkamai. It was Indian and Mexican fusion, run by a couple of each origin. Although I was initially dubious about the combination, it turned out to be incredible. Lots of good fusion options such as paneer quesadillas, and chicken tikka tacos. It also had a really nice, relaxed vibe, and I was told the mescal was excellent. I can definitely recommend for anyone looking for something different! Getting back to the hotel at midnight, I am too tired to do anything other than another order-in massage from the delightful little Laotian 7/11 from night 1. Just as good as before, and he’s paid attention to what worked the first time. He tells me he’s just spent 7 hours on a bus doing a visa run to Cambodia, but somehow still has energy to spare. Time is running short now, though… I will be stepping out for my final days for sure.

Tonight thursday is my last full day in Rio and then off to São Paulo! I'm sort of dating a cute young Indian student here in DC. I say sort of because its more of a "seeking arrangement" kind of thing, but we've been enjoying each other's company quite a bit. I hate painting with such a broad brush, but I think there are some generalizations one can make.

Ahh my beloved Tarnatwan - many a multiple happy morning, afternoon and evening spent there :-), brings back some wonderful memories just looking at those pics. Room 510 or there about's per chance ? You kidding, too expensive

A number of boys have told me that they never go with Indian customers. One boy told me an Indian customer got very angry trying to haggle down the pre-agreed tip after the act. I know if I was a bar owner, I simply wouldn't allow them in - more to protect the boys than anything else.

I don't know about masseurs - I was in Egypt during covid. Looks like toilet adventures should really be avoided - on my trip, 2 out of 3 times the toilet story featured a police officer. But, you should pay attention to the cleaners of the hotel rooms - in my case, they showed their interest by bringing additional water on their own initiative (in any case, there is never a lot of water in Egypt). And also, on taxi drivers - a long trip with a young driver always leads to a conversation about sex (provided that you are interested in this topic). Once you blow the driver (in my case), the next day you will have 1 or 2 young taxi drivers waiting for you at the exit of the hotel, ready to take you on a long ride today or maybe tomorrow. You can look for entertainment at night on the beach, but I do not advise. At night, in the far corner of the beach at my hotel, local guys, including hotel workers, gathered and smoked hashish on sun loungers. Maybe the general wariness would not have allowed us to establish contact, but in my case I was already drinking beer on a sun lounger, and they had already filled their joint and darkness was the best friend of youth.

Absolutely NOT true. All the Patpong bars under Bang Rak jurisdiction have been ordered to close at 02:00 --- and they have done! One soi 4 'bar' used to open till the early hours, has been ordered to close at 02:00 for one month. (this, considering it's ownership is surprising!). However, walk along Silom to Saladeng, another police district, and one bar close to Silom, is packed into the street! Now I have seen this ,over the years, whenever a new commander takes over a district, it all becomes very strict for a week or two. Read into that all you like. I'm only talking from 20+ years being a local.

If I owned a straight bar- God-forbid- I'd be wary about letting my fellow-countrymen in after what I saw once in Soi 6. On my first visit in '95, I'd clutch in my hand a copy of Michael Nottcut's "Thai Scene" wherever I went. This provided the only written advice- and it was d**n good advice - that I had received about how to enjoy the bar-scene and how to treat the guys we meet. So how do first-time tourists learn if they haven't access to such advice? Common humanity perhaps , but somehow I'm not sure whether Indian visitors even have access to any gay sites about Thailand in their own languages. I have my own reasons for getting very hot under the collar when our hosts are mistreated and I won't excuse lack of manners or humanity....so what is to be done? From what I saw in July, the some hotels and businesses depend on Indian customers.

From the Thaiger A new skywalk has opened in the northern province of Chiang Rai at the meeting point between Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar – also known as the ‘Golden Triangle.’ The “Three Lands Skywalk” stands about 486 feet above sea level and offers panoramic views of mountains, forests, and the Mekong River. The new attraction is located about 400 metres away from the Mekong in Chiang Rai’s Chiang Saen district, near the auspicious Phra Borommathat Buddhanimit Chedi. The skywalk has two lanes made entirely of glass connected by a walkway. At the end of each lane stands a glorious cherry blossom tree. Up to 100 tourists are welcome on the skywalk at any one time and are required to wear the shoe protectors provided. The skywalk opens from 7.30am – 6pm. A shuttle from the temple costs 30 baht and the skywalk’s entrance fee costs 40 baht per person. Although, it’s not clear whether foreigners will be charged more. The skywalk cost 32 million baht to construct and was entirely funded by donations raised by Wat Phra That Pha Ngaotemple.

From the Thai Enquirer The Chinese government will continue to try and increase their control over Thai media, the founder of a Thai student publishing house which said that a Chinese businessman tried to buy them out told Thai Enquirer. “China has been influencing Thailand for a long time now and their attempt to try and buy our small publication made me think how many news agencies in Thailand have already been supported by China which is why they do not dare to speak about Chinese issues,” said Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal, a pro-democracy activist and founder of the Sam Yan Press. “We thought about staying silence on the matter because it was risky but if we remain silence, people will not know about this attempt to control a Thai publication by China and the need for Thai press to be free from influences from abroad,” he said. The publication, which translated and published many books that were critical to Beijing’s human rights records include those of political dissidents in China such as Liu Xiobo and Ilham Tohti, said in a series of tweets and a statement that they were approached by an investigator from a private investigation company in Bangkok which has a Chinese client who wanted to offer the publication 2 million Baht for them to shut down. The investigator claimed that the Chinese businessman wanted Sam Yan Press to shut down to show his influence in Thailand for the Chinese government to see, the publication said. The investigator also said in an email with the offer that the publication should shut down before the National Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) 20th congress which took place between October 16 and 22. Sam Yan Press have released a series of emails between the publication and the investigator between May 5 and October 2 that was seen by Thai Enquirer which include the name of the representative, the name of the company that he claimed to represent and his phone number as evidence for their claims. Turkish guys can be very hot and very sweet. Language is an issue outside the tourist areas. (And overbearing rug merchants are an issue IN the tourist areas.) Aquarius is okay if you aren't expecting a Brazil-level establishment and if you like Middle-Eastern, light skinned, somewhat hirsute guys. They readily accepted ~50-60EUR from me (this was last year, before the Turkish economy cratered even further). Many years ago, two probably underaged guys approached me on the street in a random, non-touristy area, making their purpose very obvious, and I moved away as fast as possible. Beware. But Istanbul is fantastic in so, so many other ways.

One thing that surprised me about my July visit after two years plus away was how dominant Indian tourists were in the South Pattaya district. And how few I saw elsewhere, such as in the JC, the malls, the restaurants and the beaches. They seem to like being in groups, invariably male-only, and usually between the ages (I guess) of between thirty and fifty. They seem to do a lot of just standing around. How did they spend their time in Pattaya? Certainly not in gay bars- as far as I could see. Any ideas? and, by the way, there are a number of Indian restaurants in the South Pattaya area which, when we passed them in the evening, were entirely empty. Where do these guys eat?

As for bar patrons wanting to bring their own beer into the premises, the bars can implement a cover charge, redeemable for the first drink. And each time a second drink is ordered, payment should be asked for immediately. Personally, I'd long wished for the bars to do away with the checkbin system and adopt a pay-as-you-go system. But given the ridiculous inefficiency of their cash handling and change-giving (deliberately, I know) they must also migrate to card payments at the same time. Or are they trying to hide revenue from the tax man?

BBVA ATM doesn't charge a ATM fee (like most other ATMs in Colombia). They are quite common in Colombia and found in most cities. Look for the blue BBVA logo. In USA, a friend died after Covid because of hard coughing and it ruptured something inside. For me, other than the cough, it was very very mild. I hope all goes well and you can do your fuckgiving trip to Rio.

Unlike the Ukrainians, the Russians have no chance in countries where they can get government support. In Turkey, Serbia and of course Thailand they are on their own. I read on Wikipedia that around 900,000 of them fled so far this year. It is hard to imagine that they all have bank accounts that would support them for longer periods. What I particularly liked about Xone is its efficiency. On my first visit they entered all data from passport into system. My second visit was processed more quickly because they had retained it. Be sure to get queue ticket from dispenser before entering shop. Expect them to take your currency and put it into plastic envelope that then goes to back room. You’ll be asked to step aside while order is filled. When ready (usually only a few minutes) your number will be called again to pick up your cash. When I was there a few days ago all three windows open and six customers being served.

You are right about lack of knowledge of how to behave in bar but I doubt anywhere in the world it,s acceptable and permissible to enter bar with half empty bottle of one,s beer and treat it matter of factly Even cheap package tours are not attracting slum dwellers but educated niddle classes and they should know better so no, in this case described by Min, those were cheap skates. For last few trips I exchange at XONE on Suriwong between Tawan soi and Amara hotel. Consistently best rate on my currency and as, a bonus one an request payment in smaller denominations, handy for bars and tipping. As for airport rates in arrival area, yes they are lower but not need to be dramatic like in many other countries, perhaps 10 % lower. Nothing close to Turkey or Poland where airport rates were even 1/ 3 worse. On another hand airport in Mexico city aparently has better rates than city itself. As for trip money, always used old adage " take half goods and twice as much money"

Day 3: Today is the last day that I can consider myself free of work, and I mean to make the most of it. I take myself out for another fairly directionless walk to enjoy the good weather and get some sun, and end up in Silom. After over an hour, I decide it’s bloody hot, and given that I am sweaty as hell, decide the best way to cool off is to spend 1.5 hours in the air conditioning upstairs at Arena, which is only another 10 minutes walk away. It was easier to find than I imagined it would be (definitely easier than Sabaidee), thanks to a big sign up on the balcony that was easily glimpsed from the front of the complex. The stairs up in the heat were nearly the death of me, but at the top I’m greeted with 9-10 delights who leap up the second I am ushered through the door. The manager takes pity on me and gets me some iced water, sorely needed, and I get to rehydrate and peruse at the same time. 900 for the house for 1.5 hours cream massage, plus 1200 minimum (although I think this maybe was intended to be per hour) for the boy. A friend of mine staying at the Peninsula came to stay at Tarntawan to use as a hook-up room while he's in this side of town. He booked a standard room on the back side of the hotel and said it's really run down.... Even though he's paying more, I booked months ago, my room is much nicer....... So back side rooms are what it sounds like many talked about.....if you're considering this hotel, the few bucks more is well worth it apparently.

Friends, after more than two years dodging the bug, I tested positive for COVID-19 last Monday. Fortunately, I had gotten the bivalent booster the weekend before, and the symptoms have been relatively mild. The worse was three days of a near unbearable pain (sore is not enough as a descriptor) in my throat. And an unexpected and quite welcomed side effect: I have lost my legendary and bottomless appetite. I did not lose any of my senses, just my appetite. I have lost 7 pounds, and a half slice of my favorite chocolate cake is still sitting in my fridge since yesterday! I do not recognize myself. If this lack of appetite is here to stay, this may be actually good news. I am glad I got it right now, the timing is perfect to guarantee a great fuckgiving trip to Rio in a few weeks. Now I fit in my old bikini.
