From Bangkok Post Govt plans to ease rules to lure tourists The government will on Friday consider scrapping mandatory RT-PCR tests for foreign visitors arriving in the country as it further eases entry rules to attract tourists. Anutin Charnvirakul, deputy prime minister and public health minister, on Thursday said the Department of Disease Control (DDC) will submit a proposal to end RT-PCR tests during a Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) meeting on Friday. "If approved [by the CCSA], foreign travellers would only need to take antigen tests upon arrival," Mr Anutin said. Opas Karnkawinpong, director-general of the DDC, said the green light from the CCSA over the matter could see the new rule come into effect after the Songkran festival, which starts on Wednesday. However, a source at the CCSA said the shift to antigen tests may take effect next month.

@tassojunior has it been a minute since you’ve visited Medallo? They finished construction on a couple tunnels thru the mountains in the last few years… airport is 25 mins outside of Poblado now. Much easier trip. Also, haven’t found it difficult to meet guys — although I heard that was the case from a few years back…. Bars are full, and folks are friendly. Grindr and Scruff are very popular as well… Spanish/English is a larger prob as most (not all) guys are Spanish only… def recommend Medellin.

It rains almost every day in Medellin, but they are short showers, an hour max... rest of day is gorgeous. Plenty of opportunity to walk and explore. Also Ubers are plentiful and very inexpensive. Grab an umbrella, you’re going to be a-ok. Enjoy!

Cartagena is also very beautiful, gay, and more Caribbean while Medellin is more like several Mexican cities. The guys are healthy and handsome in Medellin (and friendly), just harder to meet once there since Club Tobi closed. (RIP Club Tobi). But Medellin is definitely pleasant and casual. btw-- Maybe take some air-sickness pills for the winding road trip over the huge mountain from the far-out airport into town. Cabs are usually small and drivers take the curves as fast as possible to save time. It's a long way up and a steep way down. Agreed, the old route though Rio Negro was brutal -- many taxi drivers would not even do the trip after sunset. Fortunately the new tunnel fixes that problem and the trip is smooth as can be. The old Olaya Herrera (EOH) airport in the city still functions as a regional hub and you can get flights from there to just about everywhere else in the country -- except Cartagena! Not sure why, but every time I search, that is not available. Fortunately there are plenty of options to fly to Santa Marta, Cali, Manizales, Pereira, Quibdo, shall I go on? That airport is still very much functioning and a good option for regional flights.

In Bangkok now and I'm seeing more and more tourist each day. Even Tarntawan I'm seeing more "backpackers" type travelers coming in. Probably because the rates are dirt cheap. when I was coming back from DJ, the massage shops was filled with tourists as well. So that's a good sign. travel now else, in a few Months time, Bangkok will be crowded with tourists! Hahahah

After a long absence from the headlines, the news returns to Thailand's efforts to acquire two new submarines from China. Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha said he had instructed the navy to do everything possible to complete the deal, but acknowledged that the contract would be terminated if China failed to meet the terms of the agreement. The premier insisted, however, that any cancellation would have no impact on Thai-Chinese relations and that both sides were working closely to resolve the issue. The submarine’s engines were to be supplied by Germany’s MTU under the terms of the agreement, but the company was unable to sell them due to an embargo because they are classified as military/defense items. Navy spokesman Vice Adm Pokkrong Monthatphalin said the Navy will hold talks with China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Co (CSOC) this month to resolve the issue. CSOC had reportedly requested that the terms of the contract be changed to allow for Chinese engines of comparable quality, such as the MWM 620, but the navy says it is sticking to the original contract. The fares are already being impacted by higher fuel prices and longer routes but it doesn't seem to be tamping down demand. A random check for fares in June for JFK-BKK flights shows economy fares between $900 to $1500. Business class was in the $3600-$8500 range. However, more competitive promotional fares can be expected to pop up at any time. Capacity is gradually increasing. Aside from Qatar's planned addition of two daily 380 flights between Doha and Bangkok, ANA and JAL are boosting service from Tokyo. Singapore is running a 380 on its JFK-FRA-SIN route in addition to a non-stop JFK-SIN flight with additional connections to BKK. From London Heathrow, economy comes in between $600-$700 and business, $1800-$3000. Most come with excellent connecting times.

I have just arrived to Phuket under test&go, at the airline check-in counter they checked all of my documents but after landing they only wanted 2, the thailand pass QR code document and the Day 1 PCR test booking (booked through PSAS, test taken at the airport). I got my results within 4 hours, they give you a slip to register for email notification. It was all fairly simple and streamlined on arrival. I will have a live-ish trip report started for Phuket, Pattaya and Bangkok in the next few days.

None of this is going to help revive the tourist industry. Only a complete revocation of the Thai Pass system and testing on arrival will do that. I repeat my previous question: “ Can anyone tell me why the scrapping of Tourists PCR Tests is dependant on a Local surge of infections during Songkran?“
