Because nightclubs are still banned under the military-backed Thai government’s Covid restrictions, several premises have reassigned themselves as restaurants whilst street-theatre – featuring drag artistes and musclemen – begins promptly at nine in the evening. Nobody is pretending that the Boyztown revival is a recreation of the gay 1990s when the street was packed nightly and, in the epic words of one retired club owner, “the whole place was a licence to print currency.” In 2022, Pattaya suffers from a lack of international tourists whilst the ageing expat population of mainly European retirees is shrinking because of natural wastage and voluntary repatriation. None the less, there is a trickle of new arrivals under the government’s Test and Go pandemic regulations, whilst the gay Bangkok crowd is much in evidence at weekends. Although I've been to Manila few times, I can't much help the OP with his questions. I've found the gay scene quite frustrating. Perhaps that's because I've become so used to Thai business practices. To take the last question first (Where in Manila should I stay?). There will probably be no good solution since the (few) gay places are scattered. With the caveat that I've only been there a few times and even then I found that busnesses open and close quite rapidly, the hotel search should focus on Quezon City's Cubao and Timog areas (they're about 2 km apart and perhaps 30 minutes by Grabcar given the traffic situation day and night). Personally, I end up walking between the two areas. It's faster than by car. There is a third area with macho-dancer bars, and that's way to the south in the Baclaran area and along Roxas Blvd. Allow 90 minutes by car from Quezon. But this area seems to have no massage businesses, and so I don't prefer it. I've hardly ever used apps in the Philippines, so I have no experience to share. The two types of venues which I can describe are: 1. Macho dancer bars. The first thing to do is to jettison everything you know about Thai gogobars. Macho-dancer bars operate on a completely model (and if you think Thai bars can be a rip-off, wait till you see Manila's). Macho-dancer bars tend to have just one guy dancing at any one time, and in a dreadfully boring way too. Between dance numbers, the boys are available to sit with you, but the point of sitting with you is to make you drink up more and buy more. Offing doesn't seem to the business objective. It seems to me that bars don't even allow their hosts to leave early, and there may not be an "off fee" rate. Instead, the objective is/was to entice you to a "private dance" in some rat-hole at the back of the bar, where clothes come off... but what else can you do in 20 - 30 minutes in a large-ish closet with peeling paint and sticky faux-leather soafs? It's been at least ten years since I enquired about the rate for a private dance (duration=3 songs, if I remember correctly) and even then it was a ridiculous price, something like 80 - 100 euros. I have never observed any customer to take a host for a private dance. I've had hosts try to fix up a "date" with me on a different day while sitting with me. Yes, they were all ok with EUR 50 - it is only when you ask for extras like French kissing or condomless BJs when they want more money. Bangkok I booked the first flight to Bangkok at 8.35am, which means I had to leave the hotel really early at 6.00 am. Airport check-in and security for domestic flight was simple and fast. The Thaismile flight was full. Despite having been in Thailand for 7 days, stepping in Bangkok again felt surreal. I was back and settled in at Le Meridien by 11am. Hotel felt empty such that the front desk manager and cute concierge guy would greet me by name every time I stepped into the lobby. Partially regretting making an early 1pm appointment, I took a short rest before leaving by Grabcar. I somehow forgot about Bangkok traffic as I reached slightly late. My first appointment was at Home Spa, one of the few places along Suthisan road near Saphan Kwai BTS area. Over 2 years, I have amounted some places I follow on Line and Twitter that I would now be able to visit. I would say it is a local place, their posts and ads are all in Thai. When I messaged them in English, they replied quickly and I made my booking with little hassle. The shop was basic but spacious, comfortable and clean. When I entered, one guy greeted me and mentioned the guy I booked. He spoke little English but nothing pointing can’t solve. Payment was requested first before proceeding for the massage. Massage was slightly underwhelming, made up however entirely by his physical being. I decided to walk the stretch of Suthisan road to the BTS since it was my first time in the area which took roughly 20 mins. I did my last morning jog on Patong beach, a total of 5km from one end to the other and back. There were a handful of other fellow early runners and also some who have not left from the night out. After breakfast, I got on my phone and made 2 appointments for Bangkok the next day. I only had 3 full days in Bangkok and did not want to waste them. I had a few short messages with BKK boy, however I did not confirm a meeting until much later in the day. There was radio silence as I await his confirmation. I spend most of the day running errands and packing. My hotel balcony sunset view where I spent most of my time. BKK boy was finally back online just before 8pm. The other bars I saw open were Tangmo bar, the first shop on the street and G-club at the end on the street. I only noticed the Tangmo guys during my second visit. There were about 4-5 guys outside hustling passers-by to enter. Their profile and outlook reminded me of the ex-Viet waiters from Freshboys. I would’ve dropped by if I had another night. The first visit was a Wednesday night, not crowded, mainly couples and a few small groups. There were around 5 coyote dancers on the small stage before the show. They have 2 show times, 8.45pm which ends around 9.30pm followed by a short break before restarting at 9.45pm until closing time of 11pm. The show was only ladyboys lip-sync. I liked the outdoor seating area and the atmosphere. Drinks prices start from 80 baht. Waiters hustles you to take a seat, but does not disturb you after ordering the first drink. The second visit with BKK boy was a Friday night. The place would be packed with a few large groups. To answer your question directly, I would say there is excellent advice here for a first-time visitor to the city. Agreed, the vaste majority of Laureles barrio south of the stadium is quite safe and I have never had any issues going about my business around that neighbourhood. Increasingly it is the barrio of choice for ex-pats and you will hear both English and German spoken regularly. I would endorse many of the comments about certain neighbourhoods being "unsafe" in the sense that you are more likely to encounter potential situations. El Centro after dark and on weekends can be rough, and the Parque de luces is bad outside of office hours, but I have negotiated both situations. A little common sense goes a long way. The one neighbouhood noted as a no-go zone is Trinidad (between the Olaya Herrera airport to the Medellin river) that is still controlled by narcos to move product though the city. Do not go there -- there is nothing to see there -- as the neighbourhood is still controlled by drug gangs who will know you are on the wrong turf. Skip Trinidad and walk up to Belen barrio better Cra 30 and Cra 33 which is the newest up and coming neighbourhood with tons of cafes, shops and restaurants along its lively streets.
