Giant Bangkok tunnel almost complete
splinter1949 and 2 others reacted to reader for a topic
From The Nation Aswin Kwanmuang spoke after inspecting the Bueng Nong Bon drainage tunnel project, which stretches from Nong Bon in southeastern Bangkok to the Chao Phraya River. The 5-metre-wide tunnel runs west for 9.4 kilometres at a depth of 30 metres. Starting from Rama IX Park in Nong Bon, the tunnel links with Bang Ao Canal and features seven drainage stations along the route to Bangkok’s main river. The project launched in January 2016 and is scheduled for completion on February 15 before opening a month later. “Bueng Nong Bon drainage tunnel will help prevent flooding on On Nut Road, Udom Suk Road and Sukhumvit Road,” said Aswin. The tunnel would increase drainage efficiency over an area of about 85 square kilometres, covering the districts of Prawet, Suan Luang, Phra Khanong, Bang Na, he added. https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/400062923 points -

now when Trump left perhaps it is ? On serious note probably those surprised like you are legion or three but that's the 'beauty ' of all those rankings. Being a southern boy and growing up in the deep south, I sometimes get a desire for some good southern food. It is hard to find outside of the south in USA. I grew up going to Mardis Gras every year since I was a toddler. Bourbon Street was always a stop and I still remember my youth of looking inside a bar and seeing fuck shows on stage. I collected beads and necklaces for years and years. I marched in several parades with my band. Recollections of good Cajun food are infused with these memories. A friend took me to this restaurant. It is great food and reasonable prices. I had Spinach Artichoke dip for appetizer and Red Beans and Rice with Italian Spice Sausage for the main course. It was very tasty and good. They have special nights and all you can eat plates from time to time. Tuesday is Mexican night and I want to try that one night. The restaurant is a bit hard to find off of Sukhumvit Soi 22 but if you turn onto the soi from Sukhumvit it is the first left. You will walk through a gate and walk to the end of the street. There is the hotel and restaurant. They have masks from New Orleans parades on the wall and the atmosphere is very Louisiana feel. It is not a 5 star restrurant but more of a local dive and hangout. Yet, if you like Cajun food, it is very tasty! The rates were a bit over 200 baht for main courses and some of the stuff 300 baht. But, all in all, I thought I got a great deal. The owner was there and said a big thank you as we were leaving. The wait staff was fast and attentive. I know we have a lot of readers from the south. Give this place a try when in Bangkok and want to feel like you are back home! It seems the number of world's "best" lists just keeps growing. and whether or not you agree with them is partly up to personal experience. Every year since 2015 the Economist Intelligence Unit has compiled its world's Safest Cities list. This ranks 60 world cities on the basis of health security, infrastructure, personal security, digital security and, new this year, environmental security. I guess with international travel so limited over the last year, there were unlikely to be many changes. After all, six of the cities - Amsterdam, Tokyo, Melbourne, Toronto, Singapore and Sydney have featured in every list since it started. Tokyo, Singapore and Osaka have regularly featured in the top three. The surprise this year, though, is the city heading the list which is as follows- Copenhagen (up from 8th last year) Toronto Singapore Sydney Tokyo Amsterdam Wellington, New Zealand Hong Kong and Melbourne (joint 8th) Stockholm Eleventh place was also a tie between Stockholm and New York. "One key factor that makes Copenhagen such a safe city is its low crime rate, currently at its lowest level in more than a decade," Lars Weiss, lord mayor of Copenhagen, says in the report. "Copenhagen is also characterized by great social cohesion and a relatively narrow wealth gap. It is a mixed city where both the cleaning assistant and the CEO meet each other at the local supermarket and have their kids in the same school. "This is one of the very cornerstones of Danish culture, and it contributes greatly to the high levels of trust and safety that we benefit from." https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/the-worlds-safest-city-2021-revealed/index.html2 points

The friend that introduced me to this place 10 years ago passed away earlier this year. He was perhaps the most amazing man I have met on my travels over the last 30 years. I adored him and miss him immensely. It wasn't until I just looked at the street map of this place from 10 years back that the memories flooded. I remember telling him I didn't really want to go out of the Silom area and he wanted me to try, so I did. I have been hooked ever since. He and I have hundreds of lunches at Salt and Pepper in Pattaya and several great trips to Bangkok and beyond.2 points

The place is now moved and I still love it. It is: Bourbon Street Restaurant 9/39-40 Soi Tana Arcade Sukhumvit 63 Ekkamai Klongton Nua Wattana Bangkok 10110 Thailand I have posted about it many times. Today is their 35th anniversary and I went there as it was 35% off food and they gave us a free glass mug to celebrate. Truly one of my favorite places in Bangkok. I order delivery from there weekly and love their Southern biscuits.2 points

PM says restrictions could be lifted next month amid signs of infection slowdown
splinter1949 and one other reacted to Gaybutton for a topic
That is precisely the problem. They keep coming up with these harebrained schemes, none of which have worked - no surprise to me. I can hardly wait to see what their next scheme will be, especially since their announcement that Thailand won't be opening in October after all, along with the restaurant restrictions that so far are going to be imposed in October - none of which make any sense to me. For the entire month of September the restaurants have been open to anyone who wants to dine in - with no restrictions about vaccinations or anything else. As far as I know, not a single Covid case has been traced back to any restaurants at all anywhere in Thailand since they finally were allowed to reopen. Why all that is supposed to change in October goes beyond me. And don't forget the latest scheme designed to attract very wealthy foreigners. I can't imagine that working either. If they get any such foreigners coming to live in Thailand on that basis, I will be surprised In my opinion, no matter what kind of schemes they come up with, not one of them will have a chance of working. I believe the only thing that has a chance of working is opening Thailand, stop unnecessary restaurant restrictions, and let the bars and entertainment venues reopen. I think they also need to get rid of this nonsense about trying to recreate Pattaya to become a "family oriented" holiday spot. WHY? That is not what Pattaya is all about, has never been what Pattaya is all about, and the bars and nightlife is what attracts foreigners. If they want an influx of foreigners, do they really believe a "G" rated city is going to do it? What planet are they living on? How many reading this would go to Pattaya if what is on offer only consists of things like tours of Big Buddha Hill and the Pattaya Sheep Farm. Yeah, right. They need to let Pattaya become what it has always been - without prudes involved in making the decisions. I have yet to see a rational explanation as to why sex is considered something bad. One of my favorites was trying to forbid girls to wear bikinis and boys to take their shirts off during the main Songkran water splashing day. Again, WHY? What was the harm in that? I'm sorry if I am coming across as angry, but I am angry - at the stupidity of it all. If sex and the enjoyment of it is truly bad, then I intend to be bad until the day I die . . .2 points -

Make It Right Season 1 (2016) and Season 2 (2017) I like the series. It's another peace of Thai BL history. The story is similar to Love Sick The Series, but the development of the main couple is a bit faster (though still slow ...). Tee (in Make It Right) is a bit more understanding with Fuse, while Phun (in Love Sick) was quite pushy which I found a bit annoying. I knew it!1 point

Nitiman The Series (2021) I didn't particularly like it. Mainly because I don't like the type of story "I am obsessed with you and I will stalk you until you love me" that much. Also, main couple was rather boring, and the other potential couples where just too much in then background... Is he from Isaan?1 point

400,000 jobs up for grabs
splinter1949 reacted to vinapu for a topic
all boils down to salaries offered. World over migrants were , are and will be accepting lower paying jobs because they know that hardship will bring fruits when they send money back to families or return home . 100 baht will buy more in Udon Nowhere than in Bangkok , 1000 baht will go further in Laos than Thailand, 10000 won will go further in Thailand than Korea and 100 000 euros may not buy , say , rural house in Germany but may in Korea and so on. It's why people who are almost destitute where they work upon return home they may have quite luxurious lifestyle according to local standards. And that's the reason they take jobs or pay locals won't.1 point -

I know a few Mexicans and Brasilians that have OF accounts, they said the make enough to get by, I read an article that the average payout is $180 usd a month, many online sex workers who have established a presence on OnlyFans. Many of them talk about how difficult it is to earn decent money on the platform since a big part of it is wrapped up in being able to build a following. Beyond that, you have to spend time and energy to produce content consistently for some time before the account starts turning a big enough profit. Plus the 20% commission Many people generally brag about earnings in general, especially to justify doing it, no? Not saying I don't believe you, sounds like the exception more than the rule.1 point -

Car mob rallies against tanks, troops and Prayut From Bangkok Post Cars and motorcyles kick off an anti-coup and anti-government rally at Asoke intersetion on Sunday. (Photo: Apichit Jinakul) More than 1,000 cars, motorcycles and other vehicles set off from Asoke intersection in heavy rain, the beginning of a "car mob" rally set to wind through the streets of the capital in another bid to oust Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. The demonstration was held in conjunction with the 15th anniversary of the Sept 19, 2006 coup that ousted then-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. That was followed by the May 22, 2014 coup that marked the beginning of Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha's long premiership. The two coups were closely connected, red-shirt leader Nattawut Saikuar said before the rally kick-off. "The 2014 coup was staged to show that the one in 2006 was not a waste of effort (by the army)," he said. Red-shirt activist Sombat Boonngam-anong said the armed forces justified military coups as a way to resolve political conflicts, but in reality military intervention was used to open the doors for generals to enter politics. A long procession of about 500 cars and more than 1,000 motorcycles began the political convoy set to head over the Krungthep Bridge to Thon Buri and then recross the Chao Phraya river to end at Democracy Monument. The rally kicked off with a piece of dramatic symbolism. Mr Nattawut, who donned a taxi uniform, rammed a taxi into a cardboard mockup of a tank while demonstrators chanted for Gen Prayut's ouster. The stunt was a reminder of taxi driver Nuamthong Praiwan, who spray painted his vehicle with an anti-coup message and smashed into an army tank on Sept 30, 2006 to show his opposition to the coup. @Gaybutton makes a persuasive case. I just do not see it happening. Either the prudes will get their way and, once they have cleaned up all the mess from the rains, start yet again trying to attract the family tourists or Pattaya will revert more to what it was like before the bars appeared - i.e. prior to the Vietnam War. Never especially keen on Pattaya as a place to stay even for a holiday, I did visit a few times, usually with friends who wanted to see the nightlife. I enjoyed some of the bars, especially those offering more sleazy entertainment of a type that used to be common in Bangkok but had all but petered out. No doubt demand will create its own supply - up to the limits imposed by the authorities. What those limits will be, I doubt if any of us has a clue.1 point

This seems another case of bureaucratic madness. China already has 11 massive dams on its part of the Mekong river. According to a Bloomberg article in April last year, the effect of these dams is now being felt very seriously down stream in Laos and Cambodia. Although it refers primarily to China blocking water from flowing downstream, given the seemingly cavalier attitude of China to its neighbours, what if it suddenly let out a large amount of water which found its way to this new dam north of Luang Prabang? Could it withstand the increased pressure? What if this coincided with a period of massive flooding as seen recently in other countries, notably Germany? Luang Prabang is one of Asia's most beautiful old cities. It should be protected at all costs, not put a risk. "China considers water management data to be a state secret, and, barring new evidence, it has always been difficult to reach defensible conclusions about China’s management water levels in the Mekong River. That is, until this month, when remarkable new data became public. It shines a dramatic light on how much water China’s upstream dams have blocked—even as downstream countries suffered through unprecedented drought. "Every year, the Mekong River rises and falls in cycle with the rainy season, when a massive pulse of water driven by monsoon rains and Himalayan snow melt flows downstream. Yet along the Thai-Lao border between June and November of last year the mainstream of the Mekong ran dry, the river bed and shoals were exposed, and isolated pools of flopping fish were unable to reach their spawning grounds. "That July, as the mainstream’s level fell so far that irrigation pumps could not reach it, the Thai government mobilized its army to conduct relief efforts. In the fall, Tonle Sap Lake will typically fill with monsoon waters rushing in from the mainstream for five months, providing Cambodians with up to 70 percent of their protein. Last year, the expansion of the lake, often described as the Mekong’s heartbeat, lasted just five weeks, and reports suggest it produced a fraction of the normal 500,000 tons of food. "Observers, myself included, initially concluded that the abysmally low levels in the mainstream were due to low precipitation in the broad Mekong Basin. An El Niño weather pattern still today leaves most of the region suffering from its worst drought on record. In Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, millions of people are currently without access to freshwater. But a new study from the U.S-.based climate consultant Eyes on Earth provides us with a different reason: For six months in 2019, China’s dams blocked an unprecedented amount of water from entering the lower Mekong. The amount of water withheld was so large that, for the first time since modern records have been kept, there was no monsoon-driven rise in water levels just over the Chinese border in Chiang Saen, Thailand. https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/04/22/science-shows-chinese-dams-devastating-mekong-river/ Note: Underlining is in the original article. Boldface is my addition.1 point

From Bangkok Post Motorists occupy Ratchaprasong intersection, one of the starting points for road rallies to oust Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha,on Sunday. (Photo: Apichart Jinakul) 'Car mob' rallies rev up to drive out Prayut The country's largest "car mob" rallies to date geared up on roads in Bangkok and other provinces on Sunday to put pressure on Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to resign after seven years in power. Motorists took their vehicles to Bangkok roads in a three-pronged campaign organised by red-shirt leader Nattawut Saikuar and activist Sombat Boonngam-anong. The Tha Lu Fah movement, whose recent protests in the capital ended with clashes with riot police, on Saturday decided to join the demonstrations. Mr Nattawut, backed by protesters and members of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship, led a convoy at Ratchaprasong intersection. Mr Sombat headed another parade from Ayutthaya to Lat Phrao intersection. Tha Lu Fah assembled at Democracy Monument. Before his rally set off from Ratchaprasong, the red-shirt leader stated that protesters would avoid confrontations with police and stay away from politically sensitive places, including Government House and the prime minister's residence. The rallies would reach their climax at 6pm, when drivers would honk throughout the national anthem to warn Gen Prayut that he had no choice but to resign. https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/politics/2165607/car-mob-rallies-rev-up-to-drive-out-prayut0 points
