Well, it is hard to believe, but I have been overly cautious during Covid and yet, I met someone online that I thought was just remarkable and knew I had to them him. We chatted for a bit and finally I gave him, we both got tested for Covid and we met. He is perhaps the sweetest guy I have met in 20 years. He is charming, funny, caring, artistic and kind. Yes, I think I have fallen for him and he has now been with me for a while. I may be off the market in the future, but he said he is open to 3 ways if I proved to him I was not going to fall for someone else. Not sure how that is going to happen but, I'll try. He is not from Thailand BTW. He is from Africa and is stuck here until his country reopens.2 points

Thai Government Tightens Sweeping Pandemic News Criticism Ban
Ruthrieston and one other reacted to reader for a topic
From Bangkok Post Civil Court blocks PM's gag on free speech The Civil Court on Friday ruled in favour of the media by issuing an injunction suspending Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s regulation restricting freedom of speech and threatening internet censorship. The court said it went against the law. The court also issued an English-language announcement of its decision. “Considering that Section 9 of the Emergency Decree on Public Administration in Emergency Situations B.E. 2548 (2005) (No. 29) provides Prime Minister no authorization to suspend internet services provision, Article 2 of the Regulation authorizing the suspension of internet services provision against the Internet Protocol address (IP address) of which the user has disseminated the information not compatible with the Regulation is in contrary to the law,’’ the announcement said. “It is in the view of the Court that, considering the existence of several legal instruments establishing the measures concerning illegal dissemination of information and the government’s capability to educate people, develop a public better understanding and examine false information, the suspension of the enforcement of such Regulation does not pose any obstacle to public administration in emergency situations and public interest,’’ the the statement said. https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/2161247/civil-court-blocks-pms-gag-on-free-speech2 points -

Expats are included in Thailand’s vaccination plan
splinter1949 and one other reacted to aussie_ for a topic
The following is from the email sent by MedPark Hospital to confirm my appointment. We parked in the underground hospital carpark and they sent a golf cart to take us to the vaccination entrance. If you are being dropped off at the front entrance of the hospital by a taxi, the vaccination entrance is on the right hand side of the building at ground level. It is not a large complex of buildings like some hospitals and it is a short walk to the vaccination entrance. For those who are driving to the hospital, MedPark has arranged for free 3-hour parking at the adjacent The PARQ located only 30 meters from the hospital. From The PARQ, please exit from G level by the Starbucks or KFC exit and proceed to the hospital via a short walk. Kindly note, parking at The PARQ will be closed at 20.00 hrs. Therefore, please park at the hospital if your appointment is scheduled from 17.00 hrs onwards. Please enter the Covid-19 Vaccination Entrance, an entrance directly facing The PARQ, you will be asked to present your original copy of current passport, along with your confirmation email at this point. You will be given a queue and a plastic sleeve which will be used twice during the vaccination process to prevent bacteria and cross contamination between patients, while we take your blood pressure before and after the vaccine shot. Proceed to the Registration Desk. Please keep your passport out for this as we take you through pre-vaccination steps, e.g., taking blood pressure, signing Vaccination Consent Form, etc. The vaccine will be given after the preliminary steps have been completed. You will be asked to remain under observation for 30 minutes.2 points -

Source To protect its coral reefs, Thailand on Tuesday enacted a law prohibiting the use of sunscreens in all national parks. Those who violate the law will face a fine of up to THB100,000 (US$3,022), according to the details published last night in the Royal Gazette. The law was passed due to a link between coral damage and sunscreen used by tourists in the waters of marine parks, the department of national parks said. That means all sunscreens containing Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, 4-Methylbenzyl and Butylparaben are banned from use. Several studies have confirmed that chemical UV filters common to sunscreen lotions and cosmetics can have negative impacts on marine life, especially juvenile coral. Quite refreshing to see thai gov doing the right thing once in a while. Time to check which sunscreen we can use! Lol1 point

Yes, as others are commenting, as you get older, life, or at least healthy life, becomes far less certain than it used to be in our youth, and similarly life's opportunities recede with each passing year. So just go-for-it and enjoy the moment, whether that moment is destined to last a week, a month, a year, or maybe many years?1 point

Take the chance and don't look back. Most of us here are getting too old to pass on opportunities like that Don't concern yourself with being naive. That's something for the young to worry about. No matter the outcome, you won't have to regret not having trusted your feelings more.1 point

From CNN Hong Kong (CNN)Countries across Asia are grappling with their worst coronavirus outbreaks of the pandemic, spurred by low vaccine rates and the highly-contagious Delta variant. While nations such as China, Japan and South Korea are seeing growing outbreaks, the sharp edge of the Delta wave is being keenly felt in Southeast Asia, with countries seeing rapid rises in case numbers and deaths. Southeast Asian nations that managed to contain outbreaks last year are now struggling with overwhelmed health services, a lack of hospital beds, equipment, and oxygen. They have also reimposed lockdowns, shuttering factories in crucial manufacturing hubs and restricting the movement of citizens already suffering financially. Frustrations among citizens forced to endure yet more curbs on their freedoms and ability to work are reaching boiling point -- and protests against their governments' handling of the outbreaks have broken out in Malaysia and Thailand. Meanwhile, Myanmar is on the verge of collapse as a February military coup and ensuing bloody crackdown has shattered the health system and vaccinations have completely stalled. While wealthier countries, like the United Kingdom and Singapore, are seeing renewed outbreaks, they have fully vaccinated more than half of their populations. Comparatively, Vietnam has fully vaccinated less than 1% of its population, Thailand around 5%, the Philippines 7.2%, and virus epicenter Indonesia 7.6%, according to Our World in Data. More than a year and a half into the pandemic, the more contagious Delta variant is exposing the weaknesses of nations with low vaccine rates, even if they previously had control of the virus. Vietnam Perhaps nowhere in Southeast Asia is that flip more evident than in Vietnam. Last year, the country was held up as a leading example in containing the virus thanks to an aggressive strategy of early screening of passengers at airports and a strict quarantine and monitoring program. For the past year and a half, residents have been able to live a relatively normal life and the economy actually grew by 2.9% in 2020, according to the World Bank. But since late April, Vietnam has reported a sharp increase in Covid-19 infections. On Wednesday, Vietnam reported 7,623 new cases, down from 8,620 on Sunday with most new infections in Ho Chi Minh City, the Health Ministry said. In total, Vietnam has confirmed 177,813 cases, more than 85% of those were reported in the past month alone, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Of Vietnam's 2,327 deaths, about half were reported in the past month. The government has imposed strict lockdowns in the capital, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh City to try to curb further spread and Covid treatment centers have been set up to accommodate more patients. But the outbreak has put pressure on the government to increase its vaccine supply and ramp up inoculations. So far, only 0.6% of Vietnam's 96 million population has been fully vaccinated, according to JHU. Indonesia The world's fourth most populous nation, Indonesia, recently overtook India as Asia's Covid epicenter, and the outbreak has been devastating with a high of more than 50,000 cases a day. Of its 354 million reported cases since the pandemic began, 1.2 million were recorded in the past month, according to JHU. On Wednesday, Indonesia surpassed 100,000 coronavirus deaths, becoming only the second country in Asia to do so. On Wednesday, 1,747 fatalities were reported by the Health Ministry and 35,867 cases. If the spread continues unabated, experts say it could push Indonesia's health care system to the brink of disaster. Some fear the situation may be worse than the numbers show, because not enough people are getting tested for the virus. One local survey found that nearly half of the 10.6 million residents of the capital, Jakarta, may have contracted Covid-19. The country is suffering a health crisis, with hospitals stretched to their limits, full cemeteries expanded to hold the Covid dead, and exhausted health care workers. Experts say Indonesia is now reaping the costs of not implementing strict lockdowns nor investing enough in efficient contact-tracing systems. On Monday, the government announced an extension of the highest Level 4 restrictions in several cities and areas, including the capital, and the islands of Java and Bali for another week. Meanwhile the country's health minister said the devastating wave had peaked in some areas, and authorities were aiming to start gradually reopening its economy in September, according to Reuters. Malaysia Despite a national lockdown, Malaysia has also seen an exponential rise in cases and deaths, with the outbreak forcing a month-long suspension of Parliament. Anger among the people is mounting. Hundreds broke coronavirus restrictions to protest in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, over the weekend against the government's handling of the outbreak and called on Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to resign. Following the suspension of a special sitting of the legislature on Monday due to Covid, opposition lawmakers marched toward the Parliament building also demanding Muhyiddin's resignation. Frustration over the mounting deaths, vaccine rates and economic pain is exacerbated by Malaysia's current political crisis, in which Muhyiddin's government appears on the verge of collapse after taking control of the ruling coalition following elections last year. Last week, thousands of overworked Malaysian doctors went on strike over conditions in hospitals, saying they have been pushed to the brink, as beds and ventilators run low. The protest came as total Covid cases in Malaysia surpassed 1 million with the country reporting its highest number of daily infections. On Wednesday, Malaysia reported a new record number of cases, with 19,819 new infections, according to the Health Ministry, up from about 7,000 a month ago. Covid deaths are also at record levels, with 257 reported on Wednesday. Thailand Although it was the first country to report a Covid-19 case outside of China in January last year, Thailand kept its infection numbers low in 2020 thanks to successful containment measures. This year, however, it is facing a much bigger challenge. After containing a second wave that started last December, Thailand is struggling to curb a third wave of infections that has pushed daily caseloads and death tolls to unprecedented levels. On Wednesday, Thailand reported a record high in daily confirmed cases, with 20,920 infections -- the second day of reporting over 20,000 cases, according to the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA). Thailand also recorded 160 deaths, bringing the total death toll to 5,663. Hospitals in the capital, Bangkok, have become overwhelmed by the surge in cases and demand for beds has greatly outstripped capacity. Authorities are racing to lessen the burden on the health care system. Bangkok is dispatching more than 400 doctors and nurses from provincial areas to the city's slums and densely populated areas to test and isolate 250,000 residents, said Dr. Supat Hasuwannakit, president of the Rural Doctor Society. "We may be unable to reduce the rate of infection just yet, but we hope to ease the bed situation in Bangkok and slow down the death rate," Supat said. On Tuesday, Thailand extended its national lockdown until the end of the month to slow the rising cases. Now, 29 provinces have been placed under the strictest protocol, meaning 40% of the country's population will be under lockdown, according to CNN's calculation of data from the CCSA. Myanmar On Thailand's border, Myanmar is collapsing under the double crisis of pandemic and military coup. There is a desperate oxygen shortage in the country, with families of the seriously ill queuing for oxygen or frantically searching online for Covid treatments. Residents are choosing to self-treat at home, doctors say. If they do go to hospital they are often turned away as the facilities are running out of oxygen, treatments and beds, and there's not enough staff to care for patients, they said. The United Nations estimates only 40% of the country's health care facilities are still able to function. Reported daily cases in Myanmar have risen from about 100 in early June to about 5,000 a day, with the total confirmed infections at 315,118, according to the World Health Organization. Myanmar has also reported 10,373 deaths. Continues with graphs and photos https://www.cnn.com/2021/08/04/asia/southeast-asia-delta-covid-explainer-intl-hnk/index.html1 point

The frightening situation in Myanmar will (already is) affecting Thailand

Judging by the fact that soldiers have been escaping to neighbouring Bangladesh, that is probably very true. I have a dear friend who is half Thai and half Burmese. His Burmese father lives in the Shan States. For decades the central government has been fighting the rebel states which mostly border Thailand. Now my friend tells me the Shan army is calling up a lot of young men to fight the junta. As in Thailand, lads can buy their way out of army duty with what for Burmese will be an impossible amount of cash. Thankfully my friend has a job here in Thailand and has been able to send enough money to his father to buy out his younger brother and himself.1 point -

Optimistic PM? Huh!1 point -
I agree that foreigners in the country should avoid protests and demonstrations. However, foreigners--wherever they might be--who believe that this poses a threat to the people of Thailand should not be inhibited from expressing those about fears the actions the government is taking. If people and nations don't do so about atrocities in Myanmar, that nation's junta will feel even more free to kill its citizens than it already does. If more foreigners had done so in the 30's, it's not impossible that the Holocaust might have been prevented. Excerpt from Thai Enquirer Opinion column This government has the temerity to think that they can keep passing decrees and laws that infringe on our freedom without consequences. They are wrong. So we are letting you know at Thai Enquirer that nothing will change, that we will continue to hold power to account. Though this new law was designed to target us and our colleagues who do a thankless job everyday, we will not be scared into biting our tongue or holding in our critiques. We believe that in a just society, the first line of defense against the encroachment of totality and despotism is a free and fair press. We will work and act accordingly.1 point

Summer Olympics 2021
Finnseventy reacted to PeterRS for a topic
How wonderful that double world champion Tom Daley has won an Olympic Gold medal in this fourth summer Games. That achievement in the Synchronised High 10 m. Platform Dive is the realisation of a dream he had aged 11. Now one of the world's most famous gay athletes, married to screenwriter Dustin Lance Black ("Milk" for which he won an Oscar, "J. Edgar" about the feared FBI Director and his gay lover) and with a 4-year old son, Daley competed in Beijing in 2008 when he was just 13. He picked up 2 bronze medals London. Then in Rio, for the first time he failed to make the Finals of a major competition and was thrown into despair. With encouragement from his husband he fought back. Now at the age of 27 he has fulfilled his dream, beating the Chinese favourites with the last dive with his diving partner Matty Lee. What makes Daley's story so compelling is that he has fought adversity for much of his life. He was bullied at school, his adored father died of a brain tumour aged only 40, and he then faced the problems all famous people have in coming out. He did this on his own terms, no doubt encouraged by Black, with a impressive, matter-of-fact video issued in 2013. He has now become an advocate for the LGBTQ community. As he told the BBC - "When I was a little boy, I felt like an outsider and different," began Daley. "I felt I was never going to be anything because who I wasn't what society wanted me to be. "I hope that seeing LGBT people performing at the Olympic Games gives young kids belief and means they won't feel so frightened, scared and alone. "Whoever you are, no matter where you come from, you can become an Olympic champion - because I did it." Black, Daley and their son Robbie: Instagram photo1 point -

With China backing the military and the mandarins in Beijing nervous of any revolutionary movements anywhere on their border, the supply of arms will continue flowing to the military. If there is to be a revolution, some other country/counries will have to side with those with those fighting against the present junta. So far it seems those fighting the government are on their own.0 points -

Military efficiency in Myanmar. Anyone who dares to oppose, just imprison them, torture them, and kill them. Have they opened the concentration camps yet? They're currently building them in Belarus. Maybe that's giving the Burmese military an idea. Why is it that the wrong people always seem to make it into positions of power? And how do they convince the soldiers to do these things to their own people?0 points -
