My thoughts on what I saw... The first 10 minutes is entirely new (not from the book). I'm not sure how to feel about that. Part of me thinks it's a studio requirement to add Zendaya to this part of the movie... part of me hopes it's just Villenuve working his way out of the trap of in-head exposition through the book and Lynch movie. It's obvious Villenuve loves the book, so I'll keep hoping. The visuals and music are fucking stunning. They finally got the Atredies Ornathopter to work on screen as described. They are splitting the book into two movies, but as of yet the second is unconfirmed. There's also talk about a show based in the universe about the Bene Gesserit sisterhood which sounds promising, though I think setting it basically before the movie would be an unfortunate choice (since how everything must end up is established).3 points

I'm a huge Dune nerd and have been eagerly awaiting this movie for years! I went to a special IMAX preview they did the night before the release of this new trailer. It included the first 10 minutes of the film plus the sandworm attack on the spice harvester scene plus some behind the scenes and then this trailer. That is was shot for IMAX was clear and I am planning to see it on an IMAX screen at least once (then probably Dolby Laser once or twice more). Very excited!3 points

I had really started to get into Bordain's new show on CNN and when he died I just couldn't watch anymore. Still have the last couple episodes on my DVR. I saw this movie, and liked it. It's a good portrait of an addictive/obsessive personality. Not all of the addictions were bad, but the last one (Asia Argento) may've been the one that did him in, or not. The movie definitely lets you blame her if you want, but also shows that Bourdain was deeply flawed and may've just taken that relationship 10X more seriously than she did. It was great to hear his voice (or whatever they did) and see most of the memorable friends who'd been on adventures with him again. It was sad but not morose or depressing. Most people in it blame him even directly calling him an asshole for doing it. No, they don't go any more specific than it was a hanging that happened to be during turbulence with Argento.2 points

Summer Olympics 2021

How wonderful that double world champion Tom Daley has won an Olympic Gold medal in this fourth summer Games. That achievement in the Synchronised High 10 m. Platform Dive is the realisation of a dream he had aged 11. Now one of the world's most famous gay athletes, married to screenwriter Dustin Lance Black ("Milk" for which he won an Oscar, "J. Edgar" about the feared FBI Director and his gay lover) and with a 4-year old son, Daley competed in Beijing in 2008 when he was just 13. He picked up 2 bronze medals London. Then in Rio, for the first time he failed to make the Finals of a major competition and was thrown into despair. With encouragement from his husband he fought back. Now at the age of 27 he has fulfilled his dream, beating the Chinese favourites with the last dive with his diving partner Matty Lee. What makes Daley's story so compelling is that he has fought adversity for much of his life. He was bullied at school, his adored father died of a brain tumour aged only 40, and he then faced the problems all famous people have in coming out. He did this on his own terms, no doubt encouraged by Black, with a impressive, matter-of-fact video issued in 2013. He has now become an advocate for the LGBTQ community. As he told the BBC - "When I was a little boy, I felt like an outsider and different," began Daley. "I felt I was never going to be anything because who I wasn't what society wanted me to be. "I hope that seeing LGBT people performing at the Olympic Games gives young kids belief and means they won't feel so frightened, scared and alone. "Whoever you are, no matter where you come from, you can become an Olympic champion - because I did it." Black, Daley and their son Robbie: Instagram photo2 points -
Great article here. From Time A volunteer from the 'Saimai Will Survive' group in protective gear talks to a woman infected with COVID-19 on her condition while checking her blood pressure and blood oxygen levels Friday, July 23, 2021, in Bangkok, Thailand. AP Photo/Tassanee BANGKOK, Thailand — As Thailand‘s medical system struggles beneath a surge of coronavirus cases, ordinary people are helping to plug the gaps, risking their own health to bring care and supplies to often terrified, exhausted patients who’ve fallen through the cracks. In the Samai area of Bangkok, Ekapob Laungprasert’s team heads out for another weekend on the front lines of a crisis. His volunteer group, Samai Will Survive, has been working around the clock, responding to about a hundred SOS calls daily from desperate COVID-19 patients unable to get the help they need. “We realize how hard working and how tired doctors and nurses are,” says the 38-year-old businessman. “What we are trying to do today is to help relieve some of the burden. Before, all cases must go to the hospital, so today there are no hospital beds. So we volunteer to help out.” It’s not long before they’re in action: Malee, a COVID-19 positive woman whose breathing has suddenly worsened. The group, wearing personal protective equipment, delivers oxygen and much-needed reassurance to Malee and her husband, an army officer who also has the virus. “I lost hope even with the army. I called doctors at field hospitals. All they told me to do was to send information, just send information,” Worawit Srisang said. “I got the same answers everywhere. At least these guys visit us in person. What the patient needs is a chance to see a doctor, not just send information.” Thailand’s predicament is stark. Around 15,000 new cases are confirmed each day and still more people are getting infected. In Bangkok alone, 20,000 people are waiting for a hospital bed. So homespun heroes like Ekapob and his group — buying equipment and supplies with public donations — are an essential safety net, gaining crucial time for both patients and a health care system under severe strain. https://time.com/6083751/thailand-covid-volunteers/2 points

Santiagodc wrote an epic, three-part account of the 2019 prepandemic scene in Athens. His posts were my guidebook, but of course a lot has changed. Here is my update: Theaters Sadly, the wild, astonishing places that Santiagodc vividly described were shuttered. You’d think the guys who sold themselves there would have moved to nearby Omnia Square, but not the case. Omnia Square Nothing like the cruising nirvana that Santiagodc saw. Usually no more than a couple of guys, if any, were waiting by each metro escalator. And most of them were neither attractive nor making any eye contact. Usually, only one or two guys, if any, in the whole Omnia area were signaling availability. Overall, there was neither the quantity or quality that I’d expected. I erroneously thought the pandemic would bring out more immigrants needing cash. One reason may have been a police crackdown. Police were everywhere around Omnia, especially on the weekend. I nodded to one good-looking young man who followed me around the corner where I discovered he was selling grass only. He refused to consider sex even with a generous offer. Omnia side streets A few guys were hustling on the side streets that Santiagodc had identified. But again, few were good choices. Around here I found only three (during a week) worth taking to the short-term hotel one block over. €5 rooms Santiogodc’s tips on the €5 short-term hotel rooms and how it all works were spot on. Rooms were surprisingly clean too. Parks Same pattern. Not nearly as many guys hustling as I’d expected – only a few, day or night. Fees Santiogodc’s summary of expected payments was higher than I paid. I always said, as if not open for debate: €20. None ever hesitated and they all smiled. But these were for short action in €5 hotel rooms or bar washrooms or park thickets, not for longer sessions. (Santiagodc took some guys back to his hotel room.) Multinational As Santiogodc described in detail, you do see a variety of the Balkans through to Central Asia. I personally promoted international relations with Albania, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Iraq, Kurdistan, and often Persia. Bars Many of the bars were closed and a few were just beginning to open back up. One place that was open had a number of healthy-looking, nearly middle-class, easy-going, G-for-P, Persian guys was Sami's. Bonus Eye Candy Among the many Greek policemen in their 20s or 30s, quite a few were hot and, as their tight uniforms revealed, have toned bodies and nice bulges. In every group of four or five, invariably one was extra, jaw-droppingly sexy. Tourist tip Get the Acropolis at 8am when it opens and be rewarded with having the Parthenon all to yourself. Then go to the new Acropolis Museum nearby and have breakfast with a view on the upstairs terrace. Of course, “your mileage may vary.” But, if you want to visit Athens anytime soon, you can have fun, but I’d caution against expecting the full, grand scene with wild theaters that Santiagodc recounted from years past.1 point

It says "Gay Bangkok" or "Gay Pattaya," but many posts seem to be copy pasted news articles from the various news outlets. Maybe a specific section for news articles would make it easier to get to the normal gay topics? Just an observation and thought.1 point

The biggest part of homophobia is ignorance. Closely knowing a gay person often opens the door to the reality and acceptance that they're just 'people'. Let's hope Anita has finally seen the light. Now, admitting publicly to your previous madness is a whole different story...1 point

From National Public Radio Anthony Bourdain, in Roadrunner, the new documentary about his life. CNN/Focus Features Anthony Bourdain was in his 40s when he got famous. A lot of people don't realize that. He'd lived a cook's life — hot, sweaty, messy, sometimes ugly — and wrote a book about it. He was still on the line when that book, Kitchen Confidential, hit the bestseller list. He found out about it by phone. He stepped away from his post, the rush, his knives and pans, to take the call, laugh, splash water on his face. There was a camera there to capture it, and the footage ended up in Roadrunner, the new documentary by Oscar winner Morgan Neville, about Bourdain's life, fame, stardom and death. It covers 20 years, this film. More or less. It largely ignores early Bourdain, young Bourdain, pre-fame Bourdain, focusing instead on those years when the entire world knew his name. It isn't about the rise so much as the apex — stretched out across almost two decades. Here's this guy, it says. He's dead now, but you probably knew him. Or thought you did. Or believed you did. This is who he really was. I thought I knew him a little. I was wrong. I read the books, watched the shows, saw him speak, same as you. I met him, talked with him, spent a night on the loading dock behind a restaurant in New Mexico drinking beers and passing a bowl with him and the rest of the kitchen crew after a book signing, caught a ride home with his driver while he fell asleep in the back seat, but there are a thousand people out there who can likely claim the same. The man shook a lot of hands in his time. He bent a lot of elbows. He talked and talked and talked. One of the most remarkable things about him (and this I know is true) is that none of it was an act. The person he was on your TV? That was the person he was when he went home at night (or, more likely, back to his hotel). He was curious, funny, angry, goofy and weird. He'd read a lot of books and seen a lot of movies, and all of them lived forever in his head. Roadrunner gathers the people who knew him best — most of them, anyway (there are a couple of very notable exceptions, like Bourdain's last girlfriend, Asia Argento, and his first wife, Nancy Putkoski). Friends, partners, chefs, members of his team, his second wife, his brother. They're all there to tell their stories, to explain him — and then admit that they never could. To laud him and say how much they loved him, and then dissolve into fury at his end. Bourdain was honest and that anger is honest, and the film doesn't look away from it. It doesn't look away from much of anything. It honors its subject by presenting him as flawed when he was flawed, exhausted when he was exhausted, cruel when he was cruel, and like any of us, he was those things sometimes. It's just that he lived his life on television. Continues at https://www.npr.org/2021/07/16/1016533992/anthony-bourdain-roadrunner-documentary-review Editors' note: This review was written and posted before the revelations about the Roadrunner documentary's use of artificial intelligence to reconstruct Anthony Bourdain's voice. From The Associated Press 'About time’: Gay athletes unleash rainbow wave on Olympics OKYO (AP) — When Olympic diver Tom Daley announced in 2013 that he was dating a man and “couldn’t be happier,” his coming out was an act of courage that, with its rarity, also exposed how the top echelons of sport weren’t seen as a safe space by the vast majority of LGBTQ athletes. Back then, the number of gay Olympians who felt able and willing to speak openly about their private lives could be counted on a few hands. There’d been just two dozen openly gay Olympians among the more than 10,000 who competed at the 2012 London Games, a reflection of how unrepresentative and anachronistic top-tier sports were just a decade ago and, to a large extent, still are. Still, at the Tokyo Games, the picture is changing. A wave of rainbow-colored pride, openness and acceptance is sweeping through Olympic pools, skateparks, halls and fields, with a record number of openly gay competitors in Tokyo. Whereas LGBTQ invisibility used to make Olympic sports seem out of step with the times, Tokyo is shaping up as a watershed for the community and for the Games — now, finally, starting to better reflect human diversity. “It’s about time that everyone was able to be who they are and celebrated for it,” said U.S. skateboarder Alexis Sablone, one of at least five openly LGBTQ athletes in that sport making its Olympic debut in Tokyo. “It’s really cool,” Sablone said. “What I hope that means is that even outside of sports, kids are raised not just under the assumption that they are heterosexual.” The gay website Outsports.com has been tallying the number of publicly out gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and nonbinary athletes in Tokyo. After several updates, its count is now up to 168, including some who petitioned to get on the list. That’s three times the number that Outsports tallied at the last Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. At the London Games, it counted just 23. “The massive increase in the number of out athletes reflects the growing acceptance of LGBTQ people in sports and society,” Outsports says. Daley is also broadcasting that message from Tokyo, his fourth Olympics overall and second since he came out. After winning gold for Britain with Matty Lee in 10-meter synchronized diving, the 27-year-old reflected on his journey from young misfit who felt “alone and different” to Olympic champion who says he now feels less pressure to perform because he knows that his husband and their son love him regardless. Thanks for sharing. Looks fantastic. My goodness. This brings back memories of my childhood. I read this when I was so young I don't even remember much about it other than staying up late at night to read and mostly not understand what I was reading but continued to read. Timothée Chalamet looks sexy as always. I can never get enough of Jason Momoa. This looks fabulous!1 point

I agree. They were fantastic. However, the other parts were disappointing, as I expected Japan to use the ceremony to highlight its technology. But it's the Japanese way to take a sombre approach to things in times of crisis so I guess I'm not really all that surprised. Friends there tell me that although most people didn't want the games to go ahead, everyone is now watching. And isn't Yuto Horigame gorgeous! So "kawaii". Sponsors in Japan will be lining up to throw money at him and his face will be everywhere. One medal and his whole life has changed forever.1 point -

Maybe a good time to remember one of the greatest of all Olympic themed songs. Two mega stars, one an iconic pop singer, the other a legendary opera diva got together after it was announced that Barcelona would host the 1992 Olympics. An opera lover, Freddie Mercury had long admired Montserrat Caballe who had been born in Barcelona. Their 1987 duet, "Barcelona" was unique and a surprise hit around the world. Caballe originally had doubts but came to have a great respect for Mercury's talents. Even though Mercury had died in 1991, a recording of the duet was featured at the Olympic opening ceremony the following year.1 point -

Once cute young Japanese guide is all it will take. I remember my first ever visit. I had arrived on a Friday afternoon, jet-lagged after a few days in New York and then two in Los Angeles, knew no-one, spoke only a few words of the language and had a week-end to kill before meetings the following Monday. On Saturday morning, after doing a little sightseeing, I got off the subway to look at another area. As I was walking up the long steps into the summer sunlight along with seemingly half of the city, I noticed a tall guy in a bright white shirt going down along with the other half of the city. For a second our eyes locked. A couple of seconds later I turned to look down. He was doing the same looking at me. The crowds were such that we could not change direction. Once at the top I assumed he would have disappeared into the station. But from the top I could just make out that white shirt in the darkness. He was looking up. So what was I to do? I went down again. We chatted even though his English was not very good. We then met a few hours later, had dinner, he showed me where the ni-chome bars were, came back to my hotel and then spent the rest of the week end with me. Thereafter I loved the city, even though I never saw my first guide again. Simple!1 point -
Ahh but was the beautiful Asian cock connected to a GAY man or a straight man !?? If not gay well "obviously" it's of no interest to any of us and probably shouldn't even be posted on a "gay" board anyway ! lol Personally I'm just jealous and hope you get indigestion from all your greedy overeating !! :-)1 point

@NIrishGuy I agree. But, I did have a beautiful Asian cock last night. YUMMY! I think that was both dinner and breakfast this AM and I am completely famished.1 point

Also are we assuming that "gays" have such a limited interest span that we can't be interested or follow topics that don't involve overly "gay' subjects - surely if sitting chatting in a (gay) bar over a beer with a fellow "gay" it would sometimes be perfectly acceptable to chat and discuss the weather, or covid, or some new pension / visa rules that just came out, or some smart piece of investment advice we'd just picked up or the host of other topics that crop up here and on other "gay" boards occasionally too. Whilst I'm all for the "Wow what a lovely big Asian cock he has" post I do also welcome the other stuff as well as life ( for most of us at least) doesn't just revolve around the big cock topics but also includes those other subjects too, even if they aren't exclusively, exceptionally or overtly "gay" perhaps.1 point

Pay no mind to @Slvkguyhe speaks so negatively about Miami, and generalizes about all Miami men — and as a Miami Beach guy, I can say his version of Miami is not what I experience, living here. Miami scene is way more than the beach. You have Wynwood which is always slammed and a lot of fun. Little Havana, Little River and Brickell have cool bars and lots of pop up warehouse parties. Not to knock FTL, but it doesn’t have the vibe or the swag of Miami hot spots. Hit up any bar in Wynwood or head to Space, 11, Palace, the basement at the Edition, Blackbird Ordinary, the Wood, Swan, Soho House, Deuces, or Nandos and Komodo after hours.... or this weekends pop-up cocktail lounge promoted by a celeb or promoter... @Slvkguyis right that FTL is traditional gay, it’s a scene is focused on oddly lit gay bars in strip malls, playing gay pop anthems mixed with club dance DJ sets, the kind of place that always need a good cleaning and the kind of place we’ve already spent so much of our lives in... guys in muscle tees or sparkly tank tops, cargo shorts and flip flops. Miami’s scene is mixed, restaurants turned to night clubs after hours, gays and straights dancing together, hanging together, cruising and flirting together... it’s vibier, way sexier and I think a lot more fun. and no, all Miami gays don’t go to FTL for the weekend. You go up maybe once every 5 or 6 weeks, when a friend wants to hit the bear bar in FTL (there isn’t a good one in Miami) or a friend just got dumped and wants boys night — outside of Miami. Nobody in Miami hates the gay scene in Miami. If we did we’d move, FTL is a lot cheaper and only 30 mins away. Gays who live in Miami think it’s head and shoulders above FTL. It’s just a very different scene — and just cuz SlvkGuy doesn’t like it doesn’t mean the rest of the rest of the gay world feels the same. Most of my friends from other places in US all hit up Miami, not FTL...1 point -

Malaysia says emergency to end as parliament sits
splinter1949 reacted to reader for a topic
From Bangkok Post Malaysia's government will not extend a controversial coronavirus state of emergency beyond Aug 1, a minister said Monday, as parliament convened after a months-long suspension that sparked widespread anger. The king in January declared the country's first nationwide state of emergency in more than half a century to fight Covid-19, following the advice of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin. It allowed the government to rule by decree and suspend parliament, prompting critics to accuse Muhyiddin of using the crisis to avoid a no-confidence vote and shore up his weak coalition. Despite the emergency and a nationwide lockdown, the outbreak only worsened, fuelled by the highly infectious Delta variant. Malaysia's caseload breached the one million mark at the weekend, and there have been around 8,000 deaths. https://www.bangkokpost.com/world/2155055/malaysia-says-emergency-to-end-as-parliament-sits Despite the emergency and a nationwide lockdown, the outbreak only worsened, fuelled by the highly infectious Delta variant.
