The Tragedies of The Most Beautiful Boy
Ruthrieston and 3 others reacted to PeterRS for a topic
The photograph certainly doesn’t tell us much. An old man, his soulful eyes staring forward, wrapped up against the cold walking on the rocks by the sea, his beard and full head of very long white hair draped over his shoulders. He could be anyone in his mid-60s. Could he really have been a movie star, one of the most talked about on the planet? Copyright: MantarayFIlm2021 For those who were not born by about 1960 and so know little of his history, they soon will. For decades this elderly man despised the title “most beautiful boy in the world.” Yet he is happy with a new film and its identical title that will hit the screens at the end of the month. For its subject, that description is now no longer a heavy millstone around his neck. As he tells us in a fascinating article in yesterday’s Guardian newspaper, back in 1992 he finally got rid of all his demons - his mother’s suicide, the death of a daughter which almost ruined his marriage, the grandmother who brought him up and dispatched him to all manner of auditions single-mindedly determined that her grandson would become a star. A recap. Out of the early morning darkness a steamer slowly emerges from the mist, its single chimney belching out black smoke. On the soundtrack we hear the start of the hauntingly beautiful Adagietto from Mahler’s Fifth Symphony. In a long opening shot, the camera follows the steamer as the sky gently lightens. Eventually the film cuts to a fifty-ish figure sitting wrapped up on deck seemingly unsure of what the he is doing and what the future will bring. Soon we realise he is sailing into the fabled city of Venice. This successful, widowed and disciplined composer whose life has been a constant search for the expression of beauty in music, has lost his muse. He has come to the Lido in Venice to re-find both himself and rediscover that beauty. As the film unfolds, he does indeed find both, but in such an unexpected manner it will so change and unbalance his life that reason abandons him. On a lonely beach in front of his hotel on Venice’s Lido, hideously made-up to appear more youthful, he eases into a deckchair, before him the vision that embodies the beauty he has discovered. He tries to reach forward, but his heart gives out and he slumps on his side. He dies alone in the shimmering heat, dressed in his three-piece white suit, his lips painted red, black hair dye streaking down his cheek as the strains of the lovely Adagietto come to an end. By now, many will have recognised the film as the 1970 adaptation of Thomas Mann’s novella, Death in Venice, by the great Italian director Luchino Visconti. The lead role of the composer, Gustav von Aschenbach, is played by British actor, Dirk Bogarde. The vision he has seen, that essence of beauty, is in the form of a tall, slim mid-teens beautiful boy with flowing golden hair named Tadzio. When the film was released, many gays had gasped at the sight of the 15-year old Swedish actor, Björn Andrésen. Was it any wonder that Aschenbach was smitten by him? Who wouldn’t be? Copyright: Warner Bros Death in Venice was soon being screened around the world. In Japan, Andrésen was sought after for television commercials and was mobbed almost as the Beatles had been mobbed just a few years earlier. It is claimed that he was one reason why many anime artists changed their depictions of effeminate young men Most assumed Andrésen had to be gay. After all, for years it had been known that Visconti was gay. Within the business, the rumours were that the unmarried Dirk Bogarde was gay (after his death it was revealed he was indeed gay and had a life partner). Most of the crew working on the movie were gay. During the year’s search to find the right actor to play the role, surely Visconti would lean towards a young gay man. In the Thomas Mann original, Tadzio represents merely a Platonic ideal of beauty. Visconti changes that in his movie. He makes Tadzio such a beautiful boy it is as though he has just walked out of a Botticelli painting. Aschenbach clearly looks at Tadzio with an increasingly intense, if initially misunderstood, passion. The camera lingers as he first sees Tadzio join his aristocratic Polish family in the hotel dining room. Eventually, Tadzio looks back at him, the look extending a little too long. Several times during the film Tadzio has a habit of placing one hand on a hip that has just a hint of camp about it. The hints seem just a little too obvious. Eventually Achenbach cannot avoid close contact with the boy when they walk towards each other in the hotel corridor. As they pass, Tadzio turns to the older man. Here and in other scenes there is the faint glimpse of a “come hither” look. After deciding not to leave Venice in the face of a growing cholera epidemic, Aschenbach returns to the hotel. He meets Tadzio again on the beach when the boy is swinging between the poles of an awning. Yet again Visconti has Tadzio pause and look directly, almost knowingly, at Achenbach who in turn cannot draw himself away. But this most beautiful boy was confused when making the movie, for Andrésen was not and never has been gay. He often said that Death in Venice destroyed his film career, so identified had be become as a homosexual youth. He talked of his discomfort at the looks he got from older men when Visconti took him and the film crew to a gay bar. “The waiters at the club made me feel very uncomfortable. They looked at me uncompromisingly as if I was a nice meaty dish.” What would he say if he was to meet Visconti today? He is uncompromising. “Fuck off!” Being immortalised as a beautiful boy was not a blessing, but a curse. "I felt like an exotic animal in a cage," he says. And because it happened so early in his life, it distorted all his experience for years afterwards. After Death in Venice his career as a young actor declined, partly through mismanagement by his agent and perhaps through bad choices. His desire had always been to become a musician. Classically trained when younger he could play a piano concerto when required but rock music was his love. For decades he struggled in a rock band and playing occasional parts on stage. He lived in Stockholm with his wife and daughter, but tragedy dogged him. He lost a child to illness. As a result his happy marriage broke up. Eventually he was reunited with his wife and daughter. In 2003, though, he was particularly incensed when the feminist author Germaine Greer published a book titled The Beautiful Boy with his photo on the front without first obtaining his permission. She had, however, obtained approval from the photographer who owned the copyright. It was as though he was doomed forever to remain “the beautiful boy”. Perhaps surprisingly, Andrésen allowed the directors of the new documentary film to follow him around for six years. As they say in The Guardian interview, “After being a public figure for so long, I think it was nice for him to take back the story of his life. We didn’t want Visconti experts or other talking heads discussing him. I think Björn also liked that we wanted to do a cinematic film, and to do it beautifully, like Death in Venice.” The Most Beautiful Boy in the World opens in UK cinemas on 30 July. I wonder what the rationale is for this apparently indefinite extension. All those reasons for getting stuck in Thailand no longer exist for most I'd say. For insane Australia, which is shutting out it's own citizens for no good reason, it clearly still exists, but most others?2 points

From Bangkok Post Syn Mun Kong Insurance on Friday announced it was cancelling its Covid-19 insurance policies with customers, saying the rapidly deteriorating situation made the risk unmanageable. In a message on its Facebook page, the SET-listed insurance firm said Covid 2-1 insurance policies for all clients would be terminated 30 days after they receive a letter from the company officially notifying them of the change. The company would return any insurance premium insurers paid in the 15 days after the policy being cancelled, but would not give them back the money they had paid before the decision to terminate the product, the announcement said. The Syn Mun Kong announcement said the decision to cancel the insurance was due to the worsening Covid-19 situation in Thailand. The number of new infections continued to surge and put pressure on the public health system. The crisis made it impossible for the company to forecast an end to the problem and the pandemic affected its risk management, the company said. Customers rapidly aired their anger at the decision, both on the company's Facebook page and other social media platforms, with the Syn Mun Kong hashtag in Thailand topping Twitter. Many customers said they felt cheated by the company and had lost trust in the firm. "How could you do that? Don't expect people to buy other insurance from you from now," one said. https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/2149979/syn-mun-kong-cancels-covid-insurance-cites-health-crisis ==================================== From Thai Enquirer Tighter Covid restrictions coming “very soon” Stricter Covid restriction measures are coming, the government said on Friday, as the latest steps have not stopped the latest surge of infections. “The results from five days of the current measures were discussed at the meeting, and led to the concern that there might be a need for stricter measures,” said Dr Apisamai Srirangson, the assistant spokeswoman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA). “There might be a need to close down more businesses and as many as we can,” she added. She did not give a timescale for the new measures but said it would be “very soon”. The state-of-emergency decree to prevent the spread of Covid, which has been in effect since March 26 of last year, has also been extended for the 13th time and it will be in effect until the end of September. Nationwide, there were 9,692 confirmed cases and 67 Covid related deaths in the past 24 hours. https://www.thaienquirer.com/30016/tighter-covid-restrictions-coming-very-soon/ ============================== From The Thaiger Covid-19 visa end date extended to September 27 Contrary to the historically last-minute announcements regarding visas for foreigners in Thailand during the pandemic, the Covid-19 visa has been extended nearly 2 weeks before its current July 29 expiration date. The new extension on the Covid-19 visa allowing foreigners to stay longer-term in the country will allow people to continue on this special visa type until September 27. The Covid -19 visa was originally created to deal with the problem of foreigners who came to Thailand before the pandemic and then found themselves unable to travel home due to closed borders, flight cancellations, travel restrictions, or outbreaks in their home country. Many were stuck waiting for flight options to become available or restrictions at home to be lifted, so am amnesty was developed allowing foreigners to stay longer than the normal 30 or 60 day standards allowed by Thai immigration. Officials reminded that visa extensions can be requested up to 45 days before the current stamp’s expiration date, so there is no need to wait until the last minute and end up in long queues and crowds. https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/visa/covid-19-visa-end-date-extended-to-september-271 point

What? Do something that actually makes sense? Surely you jest . . . Unfortunately many of the decisions, rules, and schemes they come up with to deal with this crisis are knee-jerk reactions made by people incompetent to deal with this in the first place. I'm no more competent than they are. I admit it. The problem is they won't admit it. I have no idea who would be competent. Nobody has ever had to deal with a crisis like this before, especially in a modern mobile society. Nobody has the magic solution. But I wish they would be more proactive and fully think through their ideas before they impose them.1 point

We got similar reaction to AZ initially, and our gov first wanted to limit AZ just for elderly, but after that announcement, 10k+ people pulled out of the registration. Due to this, gov decided to make AZ an opt in vaccine, and registration is based on first come first serve and 8k or so of those who pulled out reregister. First batch registration of about 200k+ doses opened for only two states, filled up within 3 hours. Second batch of 1.2mil doses, opened to 5 states, sold out within 90mins. Thereafter, gov decided to put back AZ in the general vaccination plan. Of course our daily cases are at its worst now, 13k yesterday. So right now, any vaccines is highly sought after, be it pfizer, az or sinovac. Our DG of health just released a statement that 3k+ fully vaccinated HCW were infected, but only 3 of them at stage 3, 3 at stage 4 and zero at stage 5. All of them are vaccinated with 2 dose of pfizer. So, if anyone had a choice, pfizer would be favorable.1 point

I am not sure, i believe we have been donating excess AZ supply to Papua New Guinea and some other pacific island nations but I can't be certain on numbers for that because we were already producing and sending AZ that way to help out. The health advice has been very confusing here, so the federal health advice at the moment is 'if you are under 40, you can still get AZ if you give informed consent and speak to your GP' but uptake has not been very high on that from my understanding. It seems like a lot of our population in that age group and some older age brackets are holding out for more Pfizer and Moderna supply. Even without the AZ changes we would likely be way behind in our vaccine rollout, our government has mismanaged the vaccination program from the start. source1 point

From the Bangkok Post The timeworn sandstone lintel from Prasat Khao Lon is elaborately carved into leaf motifs surrounding a Kala face. A trip to the Bangkok National Museum is a great way to get some recreational activity in and learn about the country's prized lintel artefacts and ancient kingdoms. The exhibition "The Return Of The Lintels From Prasat Nong Hong And Prasat Khao Lon To Thailand" will chronicle their lengthy journey and allow future generations to appreciate the opulence of Thai cultural heritage. These two lintels were crafted to be significant architectural features for highly revered sanctuary compounds -- reminiscent of Khmer-style influence -- in Buri Ram and Sa Kaeo, according to a report on excavations of ancient monuments conducted by the Fine Arts Department in 1959 and 1960. The carved stone lintel from Prasat Nong Hong portrays god Yama (Shiva) riding a buffalo (Nandi bull) above the Kala face. "The notion of collecting antiques began in Europe and came to Thailand during the reign of King Chulalongkorn. At that time, the first museum was established but artefacts were still being exported as part of commerce, while foreigners who worked with various Thai authorities were frequently given art objects like ceramic ware as gifts. Furthermore, it's possible that some artefacts were taken out of the country during the Indochina War and Cambodia's civil war," said Prateep Phengtako, director-general of the Fine Arts Department. Sitting near Nang Rong Canal in Buri Ram, Prasat Nong Hong was first listed as a national ancient monument in the Royal Gazette, Volume 52, published on March 8, 1935, and the sanctuary's boundaries were registered in the Royal Gazette, Volume 99, part 155, on Oct 21, 1982. Dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, the site is home to three Khmer-style brick prangs on a laterite square base, whose south tower was once embellished with a carved stone lintel the depicting god Yama (god Shiva) riding a buffalo (the Nandi bull) above the Kala face. In Sa Kaeo, Prasat Khao Lon stands on its namesake hilltop atop Khao Lon and was designated as a national ancient monument in the Royal Gazette, Volume 52, published on March 8, 1935. The timeworn sandstone lintel is beautifully carved into leaf motifs surrounding a Kala face, according to a survey conducted by the Fine Arts Department's 5th Regional Office of Fine Arts in 1960. These two ancient lintels were stolen and reappeared in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, California. "Our mission focuses on ancient architectural elements in historical sites which no one can claim ownership over. It's different from other antiques like votive tablets and tableware that anyone can possess and pass down from generation to generation because they were exported goods during the Ayutthaya period," Prateep said. Ownership of antiques was legal prior to King Prajadhipok enacting the Act on Export of Antiques and Objects of Art in 1926 to regulate the export of artefacts. Following the Siamese Revolution of 1932, several laws were issued and amended, including the Act on Ancient Monuments, Antiques, Objects of Art and National Museums in 1934, which stated that the export of antiques and art objects out of the Kingdom required the permission of the director of the Fine Arts Department (FAD). This provision is still in effect today under the Act on Ancient Monuments, Antiques, Objects of Art and National Museums of 1961, as amended in 1992. After the three-month exhibition in Bangkok, the pair of historic lintels will be temporarily relocated to the national museums in Surin and Prachin Buri until the FAD and local authorities can find a safe place to store them. The Prapatphiphitthaphan building offers visitors a new visual experience. Continues with photos https://www.bangkokpost.com/travel/2149083/a-stroll-down-history-lane The Bangkok National Museum is open from 9am to 4pm, Wednesday to Sunday. It’s not a quibble @tassojunior but it’s important to be precise when it comes to the EU passport requirements. All the 26 countries that signed up to the Schengen Agreement require your passport to be valid for 3 months after your intended date of departure. (Of course, that’s not your arrival date into the EU/Schengen area but 3 months after the date of your return ticket - I think this is why it’s commonly asserted to be that your passport must have 6 months validity on arrival). I know I don’t have to tell you @tassojunior but others may be unaware that Spain’s regions have local rules and restrictions. For instance, Catalonia just reintroduced on Monday the closing of clubs as the rate of infection has increased. I was not at all surprised that in the Balearics the rate has skyrocketed - the young have mingled at beach-parties etc in defiance of the local laws and some international tourists have arrived - even though the restrictions have not been fully relaxed.1 point -
After watching first three episodes I agree with you, worth watching if only to see how relationships will develop. Nice refresher after all those Bangkok / university themed series, finally we get to see remote Thailand. Crime scenes bit weird but due to short episodes thy must to take some shortcuts on sophistication. At least two actors are in extremely good looking category and Mek / guy with ponytail on some pics / in his tight jeans is sexy like hell. as for product placement - they need to finance it somehow. It looks that in this covid season Thai BL industry is keeping us occupied and healing our wounds of missing LOS1 point

The Reopening of Brazil to Foreigners: some observations
Kylekylekyle reacted to numazu for a topic
The Site Boys – A Sao Paulo Helping A few weeks ago, I was with a GP from Sao Paulo, Lucas, in a 3 day trip in Rio de Janeiro. He was one of those tanned, super handsome, muscular demi-gods that one gets to know in Brazil, but with an unusually quiet demeanor. We have just exited Point 202, on a weirdly slow Friday night. While we waited for our Uber back to the hotel, we were discussing on how uneven sauna nights are these days. A huge part of it of course was because of the pandemic, and how the depressed tourists numbers led to sometime depressing nights in Rio. Lucas then commented that he found this slowness in the saunas tiring, and wish that he could put an ad on the websites, to expand his client base. I asked him why he couldn’t just do that, and just go to the sauna during busy nights to supplement his income. He said that apart from the fact that he didn’t want his family to know he was a GP (and websites tend to get passed arou d and shared), he said that the internet is forever, and once he put his face, and his penis, out there, it was all over for him, and having the GP reputation will follow him forever. But he did know some boys who had ads in the websites. He said that they have a more regular income than he does, and they can work 24 hours a day, instead of the more limited hours of the sauna. They usually charge a little bit more on the sites than in the sauna, as you had to pay the websites a monthly fee to get listed there, as well as paying a little bit more for a nice apartment to meet clients in. Lucas said when the saunas were closed down due to the pandemic, he knew that the site boys were still getting new customers via the sites, and he had to rely on previous clients that are now his regulars. Overall, while he acknowledged the obvious advantages of having a site of his own, he ultimately does not want his face out there. I am sure there are a sizeable amount of boys that would otherwise treat the sauna as their main medium of selling their wares, but have found, increasingly, that putting their mugs out there on websites is much more advantageous, given how the sauna scene has progressively worsened. Some of you here have commented that the “gods” that previously haunted the old Lagoa have now migrated to the sites, and looking at Garoto Com Local, it hard to argue that this is now where you will mainly find this type of guy: So after bidding farewell to Paulo for now, as he ventures back to Fortaleza to keep working (because it was clear he was not going to be able to work with me tagging along and messing up his focus), and to wait for me in a week (or two) to join him, I spent some more time in Sao Paulo, alone this time, but not for long. I decided to get two guys in Garoto com local today. One for the early afternoon (one advantage of non-sauna procurement), and one for the evening. So I go to the site and look for my prince charming for the moment. While looking at pictures and admiring the effort in getting these together, as well as being pretty pleased with viewing the male anatomy, mostly what you expect, big and hard, this is a poor substitute to picking out company in a sauna. I still miss the social aspect of being in the sauna, which is not only visual, but tactile as well. Having the advantage of touching the merchandise, and talking to them to suss out compatibility, is definitely preferred to doing my due diligence, alone, in a lonely hotel room, under the covers. So I wanted to pick the “perfect” hire. He had to be young (20-25), tall, handsome, light tan (white or pardo), muscular, hung, big cock, and versatile. His ad should have mentions of being a good kisser, and have lots of reviews of him being passionate, as well as mentions of not being a “clock watcher” and no pressure. Having videos is a plus too, as videos are generally non-photoshoppable, so you see the goods in action, as they are. This seems like a tall order, but surprisingly, even with all these exacting requirements, I still had an embarrassingly large amount of choices left. So I had to settle on one of course. Each ad had a pretty convenient easy button that, if you are viewing the ad on your phone, can click and it directly opens up your whatsapp, where you can take the convo from there. Mister Perfect So I try one guy who I thought would tick all the boxes I wanted. The response was pretty quick, and the convo was very efficient: He answered all the compatibility questions I could think of (kiss? Suck? Versatile?), and pretty soon I was booking him to arrive an hour from now. This is like Uber Eats level speed y’all. I was not particularly horny but what the hell right? I was looking at a pretty afternoon alone so this would break up the solitude quite nicely. In 30 minutes he asks me if I could get him an Uber from his place, and it seems that he was 15 minutes from my Paulista AirBNB, and in 20 minutes, Mr Perfect was at the lobby. I meet him at the lobby, and even from afar, he was a looker. He was wearing gym wear, and both shirt and shorts were pretty complementary to his muscular form. He saw me and smiled widely. Darn, really handsome. Manicured beard. Very stylish hair. He meets me halfway and shakes my hand, and then pulls me in for a hug. He smelled good. He is definitely a very carefully constructed piece of perfection who knew how to look the part, and play the part. It took all the strength I had to not tear into him on the elevator ride up. At the room, he took off his shirt, and sat down at the bed. Wowza. Just the right amount of chest hair. Carefully placed tattoos. “Parabens,” I tell him. For what, he asks. I flatter him, telling him how nice I thought he looked, and it obviously takes very hard work to look like that. He smiles. Worth it. He returns the compliment. He then asks why was I standing in the other of the room, away from him. OK fine. What followed was… a pretty satisfactory time with Mr Perfect. Very passionate. Kissed the heck out of me. He sucked and rimmed (and I dd as well). He took his time for sure. When it came to it, he was versatile. Overall it was… perfectly fine. Not to be such a demanding bitch about this. The sex was great for sure. Everything you could ask for, and he even came. In my mouth. But the mechanical proficiency he was doling it out to me lacked the necessary connection for me to fully enjoy it. But you know. It was fine. We talked some more after the deed, and he said yes when I offered to buy him lunch before he left. A quick walk to Shopping Cidade Paulista, and doing a por quilo meal, he shared more about his life, saying that the pandemic has been fairly good for him, and still had a steady amount of clients in the city. His phone was buzzing the whole time we were having lunch, but like any other professional individual, he was careful to not answer it when he was with me. We parted ways after the meal (after a nice hug in the middle of Paulista), and it was 300 reais well spent on a 2 and a half hour meeting. Mister Worker A nap. Then gym. Then a light dinner. As an introvert I relish the quiet moments, even in Brazil. But it was time to get another Garoto com local, but no meu local. I had my eye on a fairly popular pornstar that was listed in the site. I won’t divulge who this guy is but sufficed to say I was more intrigued about talking to him about his life, than having sex with him. Sex would be a part, of course, but sometimes, the story is better than the lay. So I message him, and in a few moments I get responses back: Fairly standard replies, and he even sometimes replied back in English, which was a nice touch. We decide on a 9 PM rendezvous, and as with Mr. Perfect, Mr. Worker was pretty prompt in asking me for an Uber. He lived in Bela Vista, which was fairly close to where I was, so in 6 minutes, I had to fetch him in the lobby. He was very charming, not the typical Adonis that one gets in the sites. But it was his story that drew me to him anyway. He asked me right away if he knew me from his porn work. I told him I did, and it was kind of weird to see him in my hotel room after viewing his fairly hot videos. He then asked me about the USA, and as we did our back and forth, we got close to each other, and got progressively more naked as the conversation went on. In between kisses, oral, rimming, and other wonderful things, I got a pretty nice story from him. He has leveraged his porn notoriety into actual work on the sites, and a few years ago, after finally snatching a US tourist visa, made his way to a fairly lucrative escort career in the US, mostly in the east coast. His main haunt was NYC, and that’s where he made most of his money. He said he only had to list himelf in one of the more popular rent boy sites in the USA, and his phone didn’t stop buzzing with request to meet after that. He had to turn people away. He said sometimes he would have 6 clients in a day, in a 36 hour span, not sleeping when it was needed. It was tiring work but it was lucrative work. He was able to send thousands upon thousands of dollars back to Brazil, and was able to do a lot of things with the money. He quoted me 300 reais for this programa, and he laments that in those days, he would gain 300 dollars an hour, and usually 1000 dollars for an overnight. This brought a small tear in his eye as he was telling me this. I asked if the pandemic made it hard for him to get back to the USA. He said that it wasn’t the pandemic that stopped him. His visa was cancelled last year. He tried to enter the USA for his 4th trip, but was flagged by immigration in Boston. He had entry stamps from trips before, but it didn’t matter. He was flagged. While in detention he was asked why he wanted to get in the country. He had his canned “I’m only a tourist,” spiel that worked before. The authorities then asked for access to his phone. He obliged, and there was the proof. Thousands of messages from clients in the states, asking for his services, and him quoting prices. The authorities then concluded that it wasnt just a tourist trip, and he was going to actually work as an escort in the USA, which was a no-no. His visa was revoked, and was put in a flight back to Brazil. He has been in Brazil ever since. He told me about his life there as well. What a story. The sex was great as well. Maybe because now I had a connection with him? Fully versatile. Made my eyes roll at the back of my head. Made me came twice. He came twice too. Very very satisfactory. I ordered pizza in. We shared it with beers. He stayed till 6 AM. Vale a pena. I also tried the site boys in Fortaleza and Recife. I’d say on the average, the encounters were pretty good, even if the price was 50% to 100% more than what you get from saunas. I still miss the sauna of course, like I miss eating in restaurants. Getting Uber Eats is fairly convenient, and the quality of food is the same, if a bit more expensive, but the ambience of a restaurant, and getting to choose the food through menus, while seeing the merchandise from other tables, and smelling the food as you wait, is something I prefer. Next – Fortaleza, what a revelation.1 point
