    Moving to Florida

So the past 4 days i have been in Fort Lauderdale Florida looking for a house. A couple reasons I’m looking here is because 1) it’s No Income Tax State 2) it is only a 1-1/2 hours from my home in Merida Mexico 3) Is is about a 5 hour shorter flight to Rio/São Paulo then Los Angeles. 4) i am finally retiring and 5) I have a lot of friends here in the FTL area!( and there are 50,000 Brazilians living in FTL/Pompano beach area)! one problem is the So. Florida market, like the SoCal market is overheated right now with most home receiving multiple offers their first day on the market! Yesterday i was with 2 friends both residents here, and we went to look at a home and as we were walking out a car pulled in the driveway and the guy yells out “i can tell this will be a party house!” I thought who is that? It turns out it was a good friend of mine from San Diego who as also looking at homes as he is moving here too! (he ended up putting a offer in on that house!) We then went to another friends hone who invited us over for cocktails, who has a incredible 4,000+sq ft house on the Beach just south of FTL! The 5 of us sat there on his rooftop deck and i was really starting to fall in love with the area! I found a house i like a lot but there is a number of logistics to work out yet but i am hoping it works out because i really do like the house! So the reason i put this on the Latin American board is because of the various bars/strip clubs we went to, a majority of the guys working there are Latins! Many Brazilians, El Salvadorans, Puerto Rican’s, etc. the best place with the most guys is Johnson’s in Wilton Manors! Years ago i used to go to the Boardwalk a lot!(the last tine i was there was 2013 with OZ!) it is a shadow of its former self, IMO!! most of the strippers should have retired 20 years ago! there was one hot latin guy about 22 and the rest could have been his father! they still have the restaurant which was ok, but we stated at the club maybe 15 minutes so to be fair maybe more guys arrived later? l

  2. Already here! One of the best flight I had ever. The plane from DC to Dallas was full, but he long flight to Buenos Aires was probably only have full. I was in the Premium Economy section and only two other people were in those 24 seats. American Airlines service was super nice, the food quite goof for a plane, and one of the cheapest tickets ever, almost 1,1 K. Ezeiza was also semi empty and totally transformed by the control protocols. After picking up your luggage, you have to take another test (I had to take one before), but the whole process was efficient and there were few travelers. Once I received my negative result, I was ready to walk out to meet my driver. In previous trips, I would just go for the car services offered in the airport. Two years ago, I paid over 30 buck, which it is quite standard in my international trips. This time I tried something different. I asked my sister to hire a remise service. I paid $AR 1,650, 2K with the tip. That is U$S 20.56 at the official exchange rate, 12.94 at the Blue exchange. IMG_2113.MOV My Airbnb looks just like the pictures, and the neighborhood is exactly what I expected. I walked a little bit around. As the exchange rate shows such an abyssal difference between Official and Blue, I did not want to buy anything. In the airport, I withdrew $AR 4.000 to pay to the driver and have some cash. I need groceries, but I will wait to see my sister and mother (they are coming in 2 hours) and will sell them dollars at Blue rate. I am not scamming them, my friends, that is what people do here. You do not need to have family or friends. The locals want your dollars. If you go to most exchange shops or travel agencies, they will make the deal with you at Blue prices, without any paper track. But I was hungry after almost 24 hours eating airport/airplane food. Right in the corner of my place, I found a very affordable restaurant. It looks quite average, and I loved the price although I did not have much time to compare. They were offering a "Menú Ejecutivo" for lunch at $AR 420. I wondered if they were making a pun, "420" is popular here in social media and hook up apps. I did not ask. I went for the first option, the "mini" bife de chorizo. Delicious, my first piece of Argentine meat. While I was waiting, I enjoyed being in a Buenos Aires sidewalk. This is a Fase 1 weekend, so there is no traffic and people are walking their dogs wearing masks. This tree was right in my corner. To give you an idea of local prices, this is the full menu of the place I chose: I included a tip, and paid $AR 500 for my bife de chorizo: U$S 5,14 at official rate, 3.24 at Blue rate. 30' after opening my Grindr, I had 15 hits. 10 of them were attractive men and young men. The good thing of having so many, you can pick only the best. I am talking with a 24 years guys very cute. I am not planning to do anything today anyway, so we are talking about meeting during the week. I am also talking with my boy Y, the Venezuelan hottie into chubby men that I met 2 years ago. I talked about him in my report here, (he was 22 back then, 24 now, I make the acceleration because I mention several possible ages in that linked report)and also wrote abut him in my blog. He is getting me pot and we will meet tomorrow. All this is sex for free. I have not yet decided who the first professional will be, or when. The offer is generous. I wrote a report on my candidates, but since then more have been added to the list. Now, I am going to wait for my mami while I catch up on my networks. That's all for today, folks!

  3. I always thought the first cases were of kaposi's syndrome identified in New York. But I see from the link that the two sets of cases were discovered on the same day. Thank you @TotallyOzfor reminding us all of this pivotal moment in our lives. It is one we should never forget. It brings back so many memories, many of fear because in those early years being informed of a positive test was quite literally the door opening to a long lingering death. And if we had lovers or just casual acquaintances with whom we might have had sex, we were terrified of what might happen to them and then to us. The fear, too, of the possibility that we were infected and were passing death on to others. And yet, looking back I sometimes wonder if those days were quite as frightening for most of us as perhaps they should have been. I did not refrain from sex after i had heard of HIV. I did not even start to use condoms until I had learned a lot more about the disease. But then I was in a part of the world where it took a longer time for reality to dawn. It took the death in 1987 of one whom I had loved passionately to knock me to my senses. Although we had not been together for four years, we eventually became good friends and I had had tea with him just 10 weeks before his death. His new lover informed me of his passing. He had meant so much to me that I flew the round trip of 12,000 miles just to attend his funeral. Although I was 99% certain I could not have been HIV+ as a result of our relationship, I started to think of all the other men I had slept with, many in different countries. I became more afraid. What if I was positive? A little earlier, in October 1984 three friends in Tokyo had birthdays within 4 days of each other. They invited me to the joint party they would be holding. I said I had to decline. I just could not afford the trip. Nearer the time, I thought this is silly. They are good and close friends and I do want to be there. So I bought a ticket. I did not tell them I would be coming. So when they opened the door and saw me bearing gifts (as it were), there were lots of smiles and laughter. I am glad I went. It was a wonderfully happy evening. I ended up with another of their guests who had seemed such a quiet soul but was a tiger in bed. What I could not know then was that I would see none of my three friends again. They all died of AIDS. I admire @Ruthriestonso much for all he did for those young men he cared for before and after death. You, sir, are one of the many saints and one of the many heroes of those times.

  5. I qualified as a Registered Nurse in Aberdeen in Scotland in 1986 but there were no jobs to be had and I was forced to move to London where I went to work in the HIV ward in St Stephen's Hospital in Fulham. We had eighteen beds in small rooms and we had at least nine deaths every day, mostly young gay men. We had to receive and transport patients ourselves as the porters wouldn't transport them, also the bodies had to be prepared by us and taken to the mortuary by the nurses too. Those were the hardest years of my life and I too lost many friends and colleagues.

  6. June 5, 1981 was the first cases that AIDS was reported. Five gay men in LA died and currently over 32 million have died. I have lost friends and family to this. Our community was forever changed. https://www.hiv.gov/hiv-basics/overview/history/hiv-and-aids-timeline

  7. "Charges for exceeding weight allowances can also be paid on the spot via the interface" In my experience ^ THIS is more about why airports are installing self check in baggage machines - and each and every airport I've seen them in I've also seen queues of furious people wanting to argue with airline staff and an equal number of airline staff wanting to try to avoid the passengers as they too know that the machines are there solely to generate income for the airlines - whilst putting a load of their colleagues out of work at the same time !

  8. Some members of the the Thai hi-so community acts as if they have a divine right to do exactly as they please, whether it is killing traffic policemen and escaping (sic), paying thugs to attack Red Shirts or (so it seems) acting as if there is no national health emergency. These spoilt brats are untouchable, while the Thai population sweats and labours in fields, or works long , underpaid hours in 7 11s...or for that matter, keeps the tourist business alive in Patpong. Unsuccessfully, for now. I won't say here what I believe is the root cause of the chasm between the very rich and the rest of the country but note (with a degree of optimism, though not much), that middle -class students , as well as Red Shirts, are challenging the status quo. About time too.

  9. I just finished packing and in a few hours will be departing to Buenos Aires. I have not visited my second home in two years, and besides cuddling my 83 y.o. mother and my old friends, I am very curious about the city in pandemic mode. Things look bad over there right now, with restrictions close to Fase 1 in some places even if they are rolling vaccination with a good vaccine, Russian Sputnik. The exchange is back to have an official and a parallel value. Today, official exchange is around U$S 1 = $AR 100; while the "blue" exchange is 1 to 150. Due to this huge difference, I will be restricting the use of credit cards (they use official exchange rates) and instead I am taking cash. I will stay in an Airbnb for 30 days (less than 400 bucks!), a studio in duplex with two balconies in a 2nd floor (3rd for American standards), in Palermo. This is another reason I am excites. I always lived in Recoleta, and then kept staying in my family place or renting in that neighborhood. This is the first time that I am going to be exploring Palermo, a quite transformed area since my departure from the city. It is full of restaurants and bars, with a quite young/middle class demographic. Wish me a good trip!

  10. From Bangkok Post The Airports of Thailand (AoT) is introducing self-check in and luggage-loading services at Suvarnabhumi airport to reduce contact between passengers and staff to help mitigate against the risk of Covid-19 infections. AoT president Nitinai Sirismatthakarn said on Saturday 180 machines will be installed at the country's main gateway airport to make check-in and other activities self-service. The machines will be trialled this month before being integrated in July. He said the machines are linked to a database which includes flight information from other airlines as well as the Immigration Bureau, the Interior Ministry and various security agencies. The system will speed up pre-flight procedures and build travellers' confidence in the AoT's public health security ahead of the resumption of normal commercial flight operations, according to Mr Nitinai. The AoT president said the system will be made available to travellers with no luggage who will be able to use self-check-in kiosks at the airport. Alternatively, they can download the AoT App and use it to check in for their flights before getting to the airport. Travellers with luggage can also use the check-in kiosks as new self-service luggage loaders are being installed as part of the initiative. Charges for exceeding weight allowances can also be paid on the spot via the interface. After that, travellers will have their boarding passes checked at unmanned biometric security stations. In the future, the AoT is also looking to replace officials with the biometric system to check boarding passes while people wait to board their flights, Mr Nitinai said. In the meantime, the International Air Transport Association (Iata) has urged governments to make data-driven decisions as they mull reopening their borders to international travel. Well-implemented, but quarantine free, strategies can enable international travel to restart while minimising the risk of spreading Covid-19 to the travel destination, according to Willie Walsh, Iata's director-general. "Data should drive policies on restarting global travel that manage Covid-19 risks to protect populations, revive livelihoods and boost economies," he said. He said there is no one-size-fits-all solution to handling the various levels of risk, but pointed towards the need to justify the economic and social cost of blanket measures taken by most governments which have been unnecessarily high. "Everybody can respect a data-driven decision. That is the way back to normality," said Mr Walsh. https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/2127407/airports-go-hands-off-to-quell-fears ========================================== From Tourism Authority of Thailand

  11. It was 1976 when I met a young man whose radiant smile I could not get out of my head. We soon became fast friends and for 11 years he was the most important person in my life until he was taken in 1987. The cure began to emerge that year but too late for Billy. I did not have another relationship like that for 29 years. This time it was in November of 2016 when another young man, standing at Soi 4 and Silom rd., smiled at me. Although I didn’t know it at the time, he, too, was to change my life and continues to do so to this day. Those of us who lived through and survived AIDS all have our own stories. But the one thing we all have in common is that as we still await a vaccine for that horror. Visitors and volunteers walk on the 21,000-panel AIDS Memorial Quilt on October 10, 1992 in Washington. Moving to Florida

be prepared for extreme sticker shock when you get quotes of insurance and property taxes. I'm getting ready to leave florida after 30 plus years as the heat, hurricanes and costs of home ownership continue to rise. I would suggest you rent for a year before you buy as prices could fall quite a bit when the frenzy is over.

    20 years of Memories

As I remember, election Sunday in Mexico means no selling alchohol starting on Saturday (hence bars/clubs are all closed) until election is over on Sunday.

  15. If I read the post correctly, he didn't say the civil partnership had any bearing on the vaccination. It was requested in the application for the pink card (don't see the relevance there either, really, as treveller123 also wondered, but so be it), which in turn was requested for the vaccination registration. Needs reforming, yes, but I think you and most here on the board are well aware that the concepts of "logical" or "no useful purpose" do not apply here or at best have rather bizarre meanings. Hence, no sensible and beneficial reforming will happen.

  17. Please continue your excellent reports @Latbear4blk. They bring back memories for me. I was last there 8 years ago, but @davet have they changed the names of the different areas of Palermo? I recall there were three: Palermo Soho and Palermo Hollywood being lively with plenty of shops and restaurants etc, whereas Palermo Chico was small and where the truly moneyed lived (as there were no commercial premises). At that time, a fourth area of Palermo was being developed. It I don’t recall its intended name.

For the reasons Floridarob gives as well as Cancun/Plays del Carmen/Tullum have a younger overall age group and much more rampid drug use vs Merida!. there is a reason that Merida is considered the safest city in The Americas and Cancun not so much!

    Wells Fargo Sucks

Unfortunately, it is a necessary business, not unlike cable service, which I also abhor. Abuse, abuse, abuse. That's why my heart goes out to ordinary users. They get sucked into the false narrative marketing, and they (and their money) often gets used and abused. The average, ordinary customer has no idea what their bank does with their money. SERVICE. Without the customer's money, there is no bank. The job of acquiring customer trust is a serious one. Too many commercial banks have lost their way. When the perception is the business is "necessary," corrupt behavior soon follows. Let's talk about safeguards the next time we experience a "run." The banking crisis near the end of Bush's term illustrates what disaster is possible in America. Many bank customers have the potential of getting screwed, when things go seriously wrong. This is not a service I need. I almost never use an ATM (unless I'm traveling). And for the huge amount of money that I'm required to maintain in my account to attract no-fee service, the bank better give me free ATM use abroad, or they will lose me as a customer. I do not use the internet for banking or bill paying. My computers have been hacked more than once. I know too many people who have had their identities stolen. I refuse to endure that pain and suffering. I do not use my cell phone for banking or bill paying. I employ people to deposit checks. No one sees me in my Tom Ford jammies (except the sleepover guys). Shall I introduce you to my friend Chris Krebs?

  28. That Sandbox will have the same fate as the "Special Tourist Visa", it's a non-starter. It is so complicated and still has so many restrictions, nobody will do it. So typical. They think - quite correctly - that many people are longing for a nice beach vacation, and Thailand and Phuket are clearly popular. But wanting to come doesn't mean accepting all and every burden the Thais think they can just heap on the potential tourists.

  29. Going to throw my 2 cents into the pot..and since this is posted to the Latin America forum, may I suggest that the best cities in Latin American to meet local boys in the local bars/clubs (not sex adjacent) are: - Havana, Cuba (they are always looking for foreigners, especially to pay for a night out that might cost you a whopping $15 total) - Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (healthy gay scene around El Conde and the local boys love to dance and fuck til late. Just be prepared to pay) - Bogota, Colombia (Chapi-gay lives up to its name, there are always boys looking for something exotic -- meaning your white ass because you are not local) - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (see Santo Domingo, same rules apply) - Mexico City, Mexico (twink quotient is super high, Mexicans love to meet new people and everyone is a stranger in DC. Plus strippers/go-go's leave 'em horny by end of the night) - Santiago, Chile (they don't see a lot of tourists, the locals will seek you out) - LIma, Peru (If you don't look like an Andean local, you are going to stand out and Peruvians are curious about the world) - Buenos Aires, Argentina (few foreigners i.e. non-latino travel this far; locals are friendly, proud and neurotic. Always very social) Good luck with your hunt! Mac

  30. I'm not good at telling stories but I can try recollect a much information as possible. That first night i arrived late. My friend had already spend a week in Havana, so when I arrived I took a taxi straight to the Airbnb. I must have arrived at there between 09.30 PM and 10:30 PM. We stayed a couple of hundred meters from Mixto. After bringing up my suitcases, I took a shower, got dressed and we were on our way. We walked from from the apartment the long way around via the Malecon to the intersection of Infanta (where Las Vegas is) and Avenida 23. This place was crazy. There were literally hundreds guys hanging around there. This was such a shock but at the same time a very pleasant surprise. I mean, all types of boys were present there. Darker skinned, lighter skinned, older, younger, slim, slim fat, muscled and so on. Many groups had their own drinks with them and were just having a good time. It was very easy to make contact and guys often walked up to us to say hello. A heads-up, while there is always gay activity at night around that intersection, I've never seen it as busy as in mid August 2019. We only stayed about 30 minutes and flagged down a taxi to take us to that restaurant bar I was talking about. I will have to ask my friend (if anyone is interested) the name because I really don't remember. What I will never forgot is it's location. It was in the middle of a normal neighborhood. It was a quiet backstreet with villas, or at-least bigger size houses, no flats. The music was booming, and I don't know how that was allowed. Anyway, we went inside and my friend might have paid an entrance fee for us. The doorman let us in and when we walked through the gate we came into a courtyard already full with people. This was the outside section with seating on the left, on the right side of that people were standing. Even more right people could walk up and down and on the most right was a section with a back drop were you could take pictures. it was like you see on those red-carpet events. Just a backdrop with some advertising on it. We actually spend most of our time standing there. Unintentionally, I might ad, but it was a great place because everyone would take their picture there and many people asked us to be in their pictures. Because I've only been there 1 time, I cannot tell you if this was a special event. This night however, which was on a Thursday was busy and fun. Someone approached us when we entered to stick a number on our chest. I'm really doing my best to remember how it worked but COVID-19 really did a number on my brain. I think you could write notes, or maybe even leave notes somewhere, or buy a drink for someone. Honestly, I can't remember. There were two bars if memory serves me right. One of them was in the outside area and the other inside. We met interesting Cuban guys but also a guy from Scotland. Honestly, it was to early for me to feel as comfortable with everything as I did from the second day. Actually, you could say until I was drunk that night. You must know, I lived in Luton, England at that time and it was quit a culture shock, straight out of the plane. We had a good time, did a lot of flirting and many guys flirted with us. Nevertheless, we didn't stay long because we had other places to see. We got into a taxi and were off to mixto. For those of you who like dark skinned muscle boys, you will love the doormen at Mixto. Besides great bodies, some of them were extremely good looking. it is my understanding that these guys are straight, but don't pin me on that. I'm not sure how to explain this, but the entrance to Mixto is very interesting. The doormen our outside. When they let you in, you first have to go up one or two steps. Then you have 2 or 3 meters to the door. That outside space i also a couple of meters wide. You were not allowed to bring glasses there but you could put you drink in a plastic cup, and take it there. Why is this important? It was were we spend a lot of time. People who smoked (not us) could have a sig there and it was a great please for chatting. I noticed that they don't always have plastic cups on subsequent visits. My advice, bring one if you like to hang around outside. Anyone, it was early for Mixto standards when we came in. When you open the door, there is a black curtain that you have to go through. My friend took the lead and I followed. On the right side of the door (inside) was a boy standing alone. He must have been 23. Funny, I never asked him his age. But yeah, he was a bit manly, but other than that he was handsome enough. His hair was dyed blond, something that looked really good on him. My friend kept walking and I followed him. Mixto is not that big and the bar is immidiatly at the left. My friend ordered drinks and it came as no shock that they spoiled mine. I don't like lime in my drink at all. Normally when they put a lime in accidentally, you can just take it out. It will still taste of lime a little but it's drinkable. In Mixto however, they poor lime juice in and that make a Cuba Libre undrinkable for me. Great, I had a reason to contact the boy. he was standing there without a drink so I went over and gave him mine. I just asked him if he wanted it, he said yes, I gave it and walked away again. First contact was made and he seemed to be pleased. This is also they guy I took home later that night, but before that, there were many hours of fun with other guys. Across the street from Mixto is a small park. At a certain moment I went outside to look around. I had just arrived in Cuba and i wanted to see a little more than clubs. There were also many guys sitting in the park and that might have played a roll to for my eagerness to get out there. Making contact was extremely easy especially as I had a little more to drink now. As I understood, most of the boys outside couldn't get into Mixto. It was fun flirting with them and I'm sure I could have taking a couple of them home. At that time, I already knew that I wanted the blond guy. After some good chats I went back inside and met someone who would be my date for the next night. I don't feel comfortable with sharing names so let call him Camilo. My god, he was a student and lived a couple of hundred km from Havana. Like many other guys he was on a summer holiday. He was short, had a great body and eyes to die for. He looked a younger than that he was. If i remember correctly he was 21, but he looked like he was 18. We agreed to meet the next day in Pico Blanco, a club in the penthouse of a hotel that had gay nights on Friday. Sadly, it's closed a few months after my first visit. Back too Blondie! If you've never been to Cuba, you have to know that boys are very pushy when it comes to asking for drinks. You would almost think they are getting paid a commission. Where I am used to feeling lucky if a boy likes to drink and party in some Asian countries, in Cuba, I had no such worries. Blondie would feel no shame in asking me for drinks. Actually, that first drink I gave him he must have drank under protest. After that, I've never seen him drink anything else but beer. When Blondie would get a beer, he would always offer a sip to his friends when they walked by. Mixto was full of guys who just didn't have drinks. Not weird, if you consider that they were not cheap. Again, i am not sure but I think 4 or 5 CUC. Which is crazy if you think of it. On the other hand, Mixto is so small that cheap drinks might attract too many people. There were also some big spenders who would have a table near the dance-floor or upstairs on the balcony. They would have one or more bottles of hard liqueur in front of them. I already feel like I am writing a book so I'll try to finish the story of my first night. i really cannot say how many boys I've spoken with and who were very willing to go home with me. It was truly insane. It's not that Cuba was my first rodeo. Other than the Thai gogo/ host bars and clubs like DJ station, I've not often seen. maybe Cabaret Tito in Mexico city in the early 2000, but I was at my peak myself what looks and age is considered. So yeah, Havana was something really special and it brought back feelings I hadn't had for many years. Even I wanted to, I couldn't recall all the things that took place that night. There was a lot of flirting, kissing (openly), ass grabbing and hands that disappeared in trousers. Ugh, I wanted to end this but I just realized what else happened when we went home. There is a whole story that leads up to this but I want to keep it short. My friend was talking to a guy (Elian) and I told him I was going home with blondie. He said he would go home too. LOL, so drunk me invited Elian that he was talking too to come with us. Elian agreed and we started walking. Like i said, it was only a few hundred meters to our apartment so a few minutes later the four of us were sitting in our living room. Elian was 27 years old. He looked no day over 21 and maybe even younger. We had some drinks and i asked if they would like some chocolate, and both said yes. I'd bought a lot of treats because I knew about the situation in Cuba. My friend told me to bring toilet paper and treats. When came back with a big Cadburry bar, Elian grabbed it and put it in his pocket. Yeah, he wasn't sharing that bad boy, lol. Blondie had a disgusted look on his face and he wasn't wrong. i told him that I would give him some later in my bedroom. That's basically were we went after that. I already had taken a shower and when blondie was in the shower there was some noise coming from the hallway. Elian was standing their naked and my friend was telling him to leave. This is not the first time this had happened to my friend. in fact, he very often invites boys but then asks them to leave very quickly. I had forgotten that I was the one who invited Elian, but this was something i would be reminded of in the days to come. Anyway, he got kicked out. I just went back to my room where blondie just came out of the shower. Nice body but a little bit bigger (not fat) than what I normally go for. He was top, which i am too, so that didn't fit. Actually, I didn't mind. He had a big tool to play with and he was a passionate kisser. That night, I already decided that I wanted a threesome with him and a bottom. I told him as much and also that he should find the bottom, this gets interesting if there will be a sequel to this post. The same goes for the stories with Elian. Blondie stayed the night, and I normally don't like that. We woke up in the afternoon. I can't remember if there was another session but when he left, I gave him some chocolate and 20 CUC. He thanked me and left. Now, I had no idea what to give him. I didn't want to give too much and not to little. What I understood from what doctors made in Cuba, 20 CUC would be more than enough. After visiting there on multiple occasions, I am still not sure. Boys never complained and never asked for money, other than the ought CUC for phone credit or taxi. Now don't think I'm cheap. it's just that i didn't have the normal John experience when I was in Cuba. For example, my friend doesn't pay for sex and his boys kept coming back because there was actually no money needed. I'd rather pay to be honest. These were just some of my memories of the top of my head. I am not sure what you are specifically interested in. Some might want to hear more about the sex, personally, I think that I shared more than I normally would :-) Lastly, I wrote this and I'm not going to Grammar or spellcheck. People who have a hard time dealing with this kind of writing will have to suck it up, hehe.

  31. I come from a part of the United Kingdom where the 1967 law decriminalising homosexuality in England did not apply. So that law continued in force. Partly as a result, very few people were prepared to be known as gay. I remember my parents talking in hushed disapproving tones about a middle-aged man who worked in the local pharmacy. "He attends THAT club", I recall them saying, only realising some years later that it was the one place where gays could meet. Membership only! There was also only one shop down a back street that sold 'risky' photo books (only of women) and where guys would surreptitiously try not to be noticed when they came in for a box of condoms. Even at University there was virtually no gay culture. My first crush was with a late teen who stayed in one of the Halls of Residence. We got to know each other, started doing lots of activities together, even hiking at week-ends. But I was too scared of two things - rejection and being known as gay by someone who might not be gay. The gaydar signals that people threw off then were much less obvious. Eventually after many months, we realised our mutual attraction and started a short affair. It was wonderful! I knew nothing about STDs in those days. We just did not talk about them. Having taken a holiday in New York in 1978, I thought I was in heaven. On the day I arrived, a friend took me to the Gaiety Burlesque off Times Square. I was gob-smacked. Absolutely loved it and returned a few times. On my next trip a couple of years later, I discovered one of the large bathhouses (the Everard perhaps?). By this time I had had a trip to Amsterdam and became fixated on the sauna scene. All I now remember were the Day and Night saunas. It was at the Night sauna that I met my first Asian, a young guy from Indonesia. And wow, could he perform! I virtually became hooked on Asians ever since. In Paris I discovered a huge sauna near the old opera house at the Palais Garnier. I think it was called Le Continental. Almost a third of the many customers seemed to be Vietnamese. As in Amsterdam I fell for one and we had an amazing two nights together in my hotel. Working in London, I preferred the El Sombrero club on Kensington High Street in favour of bar hopping. Sombrero for a time was the place to be. I loved it because many of the clientele were Asian. As another poster has pointed out, condoms were rarely in evidence then. Soon I was to move to Hong Kong, little realising that it, too, had anti-gay laws on the statute books (they were only eliminated in 1990). My job meant annual visits to Head Office in New York. Since it was now the early 1980s, it was on one that I became aware of the new disease known initially as GRID. Soon this changed to AiDS with a death sentence attached. My European/American sauna going immediately ceased. Like many at that time, I was petrified that I might have become infected. For months I became monk-like, afraid both for myself and any partner I might unknowingly pass it on to. But I suppose the temptations of Asia were too great and I eventually came out of my shell of fear. The gogo-bars in Bangkok where the boys were often nude, the huge 690 Retiro Strip in Manila where the boys on the zig-zag catwalk were equally nude, two nights spent with one fantastic Chinese I met at Blue Boy Bar in Kuala Lumpur, the ease of picking up gorgeous guys on the street or in the malls of Singapore - I felt I was in seventh heaven. Then by the mid-80s, AIDS was becoming a much more serious threat to Asia. There was even talk that the bar owners in Thailand would ban customers from Hong Kong. But it never was put into effect. Not long after, Bangkok started what was to become a thriving sauna and massage scene. Given the law in Hong Kong, I was bit more cautious. Since at least the '70s there had been two gay bars - Dateline on the Island and Waltzing Mathilda on Kowloon. But it was known the cops kept a close eye on them. One of the barmen in Wally Matt was even a police informant. So I stayed away. Cruising, though, was not that difficult. I met my first Chinese boy when leaning on a railing looking at Hong Kong's fantastic harbour. He was about 30 meters away. Soon he was inching closer to me and I to him. We started chatting and our mutual interest was obvious. But not knowing him at all, I decided first to invite him to dinner a few days later. Believing I then knew him much better, he came home. My first conquest! It was to be the first of many. But we are now well out of the 1970s and so I will end there.
