I visited soi 4 last night and what a pleasant surprise. Busy just like the old days. Every bar (except Welcome Bar) was open and busy. Jupiter open again. Banana open again Hugs open again. Strangers Bar open again. Balcony Pub had Aomam the lady singer. Pride had a singer guitarist. Stranger was packed into the soi like the old weekend nights. Balcony and Telephone terraces were full to capacity as was Connection. Let's hope that was a sign of things to come. The only downside was the thousands of tiny moths gathered around any bright lights. I'm told that this is a regular annual occurrence and usually is only one night -- then disappear the next night as if by magic. Let's see tonight. Closing time, midnight (except Pride 23:00)

I was in Soi 4 and then Soi 2 last night and confirm things were BUSY. Stranger bar packed as in "normal" times, with people spilling out into the Soi. Soi 2 was busy already after 11pm, and got packed around midnight. Also almost just like in "normal" times, minus the gazillions of (mostly Chinese, in recent years) tourists. That missing contingent of patrons meant that the upper floors of DJ Station were empty and everything just happened on ground floor level, where it was busy indeed.

Gay Bangkok is slowly coming back to life. And, by slowly, I mean really slowly. Jupiter Boy and I took a night out tonight and things were pretty quiet on both Papong and Silom 4. A few updates. Narawat Massage on Silom 4 is open and guys are outside working. Banana Room is open with a few guys there. Telephone and Balcony are both open with some customers. Hugs is open. Private Bar is open. Jupiter was open but few guys working. Lucky Boys is not open and rumor has it that it may not open anytime soon and may even get sold. Dream Boys was open with about 15 guys but not a lot of variety. Screwboys was closed. Fresh Boys was open and had 8 guys and 1 other customer. Some cute guys and drinks 350 baht. Hotmale was open and had 5 boys when we were there. Moonlight was closed. Tawan was closed but the Sun Massage was open and several of the Tawan guys were out on the street. Mango Tree Restaurant was open but I think for a private party. Super A was closed. Nature Boys was open. When I pulled up Hornet, there were about 90 guys under 25 without 3,000 feet. One of them caught our attention while we were looking and he was near the Starbucks so we met him and took him home. The Grab Taxi there did not allow for us to be picked up as no drivers available. The same on the return. It was odd. The road were VERY quiet and few cars anywhere. This was the first weekend with all the bars open and still a soft opening IMHO. But, it only takes one and thus, Hornet was a good provider tonight.

It is a huge relief to find that I am not alone in my ever morphing sexual preferences. Like Londoner, I have not been to the bars for a few years as I too am in a relationship. But for many years - several decades in fact! - I was a regular. We all change over time and we all age. I know I am repeating others, but the bar experience was not just for looking at handsome young guys. They were fun. And the boys seemed to be having a lot of fun even if offs were scarce. In the early days all were Thai and presumably some had come from the same village. What has been missing for many years now and certainly on my last visit about 5 years ago was that fun and interaction. Mobile phones are surely partly to blame. All the boys were glued to them. In earlier times, there were no such distractions. Ensuring the customers had a good time was much more important.

Life in Asutralia is mostly back to normal, with the exception of no intl' travel. Bars are open, and large gatherings and events are starting again. Mardi Gras in Sydney this weekend went ahead, but in a more limited format and a little less of a party vibe. We had a few outbreaks in 2020 where we went into lockdown with travel restricted between states/regions, people mostly followed the rules, and with quarantine for inbound travelers we managed to avoid widespread issues that a lot of other countries had. Our issue is now that countries supplying the vaccine are withholding our supply because we are not in as dire a need, kind of understandable but still a bit frustrating to be penalized for doing things right.

They shut down the apps right away The entire point of the lockdown/semi lockdown is that they don't want people meeting people. So yeah if you log in with a French IP address you are fucked. You can use a VPN to log into them but then you aren't ending up with someone in your area at all.

I like the bars but don’t like the pressure. I like watching the boys. Many times boys look different in real life than on a photo. Even when it is not fake or old photo, the looks somehow can be different when you meet in real life. Sometimes for the better. Sometimes for the worse. That is why I like the bars. You know for sure what you are getting. And can have a small chat before offing.

I love the gogo bars. Seeing guys in the flesh is far more appealing to me than seeing them on a thumbail picture on my phone screen. Seeing their personalities on stage can make a big differece. i am not surperised. The gay bars need tourists. It is 99% of their customer base. I am surprised they are still there after a traval ban for about a year now. I hope they still exist when i can travel again. But I worry.

But, on another note, I would think that being required to be medically cleared by your primary care practitioner within 72 hours of departure, apart from CoV specifics, would be a pain in the ass. You show a hard copy on arrival but you would have already survived the flight. Odd. I wonder if this requirement will be removed when vaxx certificates replace the current protocol.

I like the bars and hope to be back in Bangkok and Pattaya next year. Thanks for the post; now that things are looking up, I've been trying to contact Agate but without success. I worked-out that it was closed of course but your report that they plan to reopen cheers me enormously. As far as other possibilities are concerned, I told P only yesterday that Zing is well-liked and gay-friendly. i think it's still open. Cheaper than Agate.

Gogo bar will continue to exist but currently, the one that focused on getting the crowd to come to the bar are the one that will survive. Tourists especially still want the gogobar experience, having fun in the bars, showing off they had money, having multiple boys surrounding them. I for one prefer to go to bars perhaps with friends or forum members instead of scrolling through profiles in grindr etc. I did that back home where we dont have access to gogobars and where i have more time to through the whole process of chatting and arranging a meet. For long term visitor and expats as well as those who are spending wisely, apps are definitely more attractive offers, although your continued success might be fueled by bar closure and lack of customers in bars too. And covid seems to also increase the amount of guys entering the scene as well. Though its undeniable that apps popularity does impact gay bars survival in many places around the world and have been replacing the dating/hook up scene at gay bars pretty well.

I went to Dreamboy yesterday and around 70% seated, good business during this period. Mamasan proudly announced they have 25 boys with full show. The show lasted till at least 1110pm, i left on that time but seems like they still have show going on later? The number of women in the bars seems to continue to grow, and the preference some of the boys have for them to the exclusion of male customers is a turn-off. One does want an escort to at least make some attempt to make you feel desired. I love the bars because I like looking. I can find guys on the Apps but it is not as enjoyable for me as a night walking around and looking at GoGo boys. I guess this goes way back to NYC and Montreal and my love for strippers. It has been something I enjoyed for decades. That said, I do think the sex can be just as good with either group. Yes of course everything you said is correct. But I guess people have become, well, complacent about these things here. Yes the boxing stadium was a big story then. But such behavior as you see in the picture is not new, it has prevailed in Soi 2 for many many months before the most recent outbreak, and nothing happened. Then nightlife was closed again, now back open so people just go back to what they did before when there was no fallout.

the photo is from last night. Yes, no masks and no distancing. TV-screens everywhere in the bars mandating social distancing and masks, but not being followed. No fun when having fun like this, right? Staff were wearing masks though. Of course I noticed and wondered, too, but then again with an almost nonexistent incidence in Thailand the real risk is probably really low too.
