  2. Worth to mention US did double pricing of epic proportion for international student tuition fee vs local too, mostly double or triple of what local pays.
    3 points
  3. Malaysia also have this dual pricing in a very limited attraction (i can only recall a few, for eg. the twin tower skybridge visit, penang bukit bendera) and the "excuses" is to encourage more locals to go to these places multiple times. To be fair, these facilities owned by gov and tax payer does support the cost of building them and the upkeep too. I can close one eye for dual pricing if the difference is not huge. Free vs 100 baht at wat/temples is fine for me. To be honest, if u go to these bars, you will end up spending more than 500 anyway, so no issues to me either. What itll do is kept away non-paying foreign customer? Its not as bad as what happened in Japan where some bars totally not allowed any foreigner to enter regardless of entry price. There is also a sauna in hongkong that only allow hunks/in shape foreigner to enter, while much more lenient with locals. I guess if you disagree with the practice, vote with your money and spend it somewhere else.

Chris Cuomo has been clearly showing that even though he chose journalism rather than law and politics, he has the political instincts of his brother and father. He's been saying what I have been thinking, which suggests that what I'm thinking is a sensible enough hope. Everything goes through COVID. It gets you to health care. It gets you to schools. It get you to jobs. It gets you to wages (income inequality). In theory, it could even get you to taxes: whose income taxes go up to pay for this? Who is getting the benefit of this crisis (Answer: Amazon). That last part is a huge stretch. Biden was right to claim a mandate for urgent action and cooperation. Mitch knows this. He's already being the Republican in the room saying we have to have another COVID relief package. Reagan comes to mind. Yes, he had a bigger mandate. But he also had a much bigger obstacle. Despite heavy losses in 1980, Democrats had a 243 to 192 majority in the US House. Yet Reagan mostly got what he wanted. He went to the grassroots in some of those House districts. And of course he was way better at compromising than Trump was. Biden won the union vote nationwide 56 to 40. 15 % of voters in Wisconsin are union, and they voted for Biden 58/39. It would be a stretch to say that Biden won a mandate to try to restore union manufacturing jobs in Wisconsin. But I think he did. In 2016 Trump won the one third of Georgians that make under $50,000 a year by one point, 48 to 47. In 2020, Biden won that group - lots of whom are White - by a 14 point margin, 56/42. Rich Mitch has to worry about that, just like Tip O'Neill had to worry about his much larger majority in 1981. If Republicans are seen to be against cooperation to help the union factory workers of Wisconsin or the have nots of Georgia, they'll potentially have problems in Senate races in 2022. Biden is wired to understand this in a way Obama wasn't. Speaking of having enough. We now know that Kentucky and Montana and Iowa are lost causes, at least for a while. McGrath was a lost cause from Day One. The size of Bullock's loss was a bit of a surprise. As was the size of Ernst's victory. It confirms the idea that it's the geography, stupid. Where White men roam free and proud in places with lots of cows, small towns, and contentment, running a popular and centrist Governor like Bullock is a waste of time almost. This sounds cruel. But if people in Montana or Kentucky truly embrace the idea that lockdowns are a threat to liberty, and the only people who wear masks are Marxists, we know where this goes. Fauci is saying it could go to 250,000 infections a day. Seniors will die on stretchers in hospitals in Montana and Kentucky, if they even get to the hospital. Because there is no room in the ICU. I said this will sound cruel. I think of it as those people being cruel to themselves, and their neighbors. They have every right to see it differently. But if that happens, which is nowhere near the worst case scenario, it helps Biden when he says we need to cooperate and act now.

  7. There was a street party tonight in Boyztown. A couple of singers and some sexy male dancers entertained the mostly Thai audience. There was free Thai food and the entertainment was sponsored by a sex workers right organization. It was loud and most of the audience were employees of the Boyztown bars and clubs. One surprise was the reopening of Toy Boys. I went in and it was delightfully air conditioned. Only a few boys but all were energetic. They were clothed but I remembered several and their gorgeous bodies. I tipped all including the doorman who, I’ve known for years and is a favorite of a good farang friend of mine. It was the a good night in Boyztown. I also ventured over to Pattayaland soi 1. Xboys was fun and had a sexy show. One veteran named Art has returned and has a great body and is in the bigcock show. The boys swarm me as I’m appreciative of their assets and tip. My last stop was Dream Boys with three boys on stage. Each was tipped and they showed their appreciation. It’s hard times for the boys and tips are appreciated.

Odd how today’s politics make one reevaluate some past pols. Before going into politics Reagan was a business lobbyist/ negotiator, and a good one. (A Democrat at that, originally, before Nancy hijacked his brain ) So he knew how to horse-trade with Tip O’Neil to get stuff done.

  15. The reasoning for cultural sites and certain attractions is that citizens pay taxes which contribute to its upkeep, therefore they in return receive free entry. This is common practice globally, where museums and cultural sites offer free access to citizens and sell tickets to others (eg Louvre, Versailles for EU residents - at least when I was there several years ago. It may have changed since). Also a more historical theory is that cultural monuments should be freely accessed by the people they were built to serve, no matter income brackets so that no one should be deprived of culture and hygiene. This dates back to the Romans. Free access to culture was also one way of affirming the legitimacy and might of the rulers, for instance Napoleon trucking back sculptures from Egypt to awe the masses. I agree this altruism has been distorted in Thailand, where nightclubs can in no way be seen as great cultural monuments nor is the taxpayer argument feasible here! I wouldn’t go as far as saying xenophobia but greed and discrimination, definitely particularly at national parks etc. For nightclubs, I have no sympathy for foreigners complaining they can’t afford entry. Don’t go.

Agree. We will see if Uncle Joe & Kamala can fix some of this in a proactive way. One gets the sense that a lot of the electorate, even on the right, have had enough.

  18. From The Nation Remembering the ‘father of Thai democracy’ as his spirit rises again Historian Wichitwong Na Pomphet has offered some timely historical background for escalating pro-democracy protests that have erupted in Thailand over the past six months. Last month the student-led protest movement began calling itself Khana Ratsadon (People’s Party) 2020, after the People’s Party that led the bloodless 1932 Siamese Revolution to end absolute monarchy and usher in constitutional monarchy. At the head of that revolution was Pridi Banomyong, the so-called “father of Thai democracy” and a hero to the young protesters out on the streets today. Pridi saw his dreams of a democratic Thailand shattered in 1947 when the military staged a coup in what became the template for Thai politics to this day. Now, student-led protesters are seeking to break that template by demanding the resignation of General Prayut Chan-o-cha, who took power in the 2014 coup, and the rewriting of his junta-scripted Constitution. The 73rd anniversary of the 1947 coup fell on Sunday (November 8), prompting author Wichitwong Na Pomphet to post an article about Pridi’s escape from Thailand at https://pridi.or.th, the website of the Pridi Banomyong Institute. On November 8, 1947, Army troops seized various government installations in Bangkok. The coup, led by Lieutenant General Phin Choonhavan and Colonel Kat Katsongkhram, ousted the government of Pridi’s proxy, Rear Admiral Thawan Thamrongnawasawat, who was replaced by Khuang Aphaiwong as prime minister. Khuang had earlier headed the government elected in January 1946, but when he resigned in March, Pridi took over in a bid to stabilise spiralling political tensions. The Pridi government marked the war crimes trial of former PM Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram, who managed to escape charges of colluding with Japan on a legal technicality. After a general election, Pridi resigned as prime minister and took up his role of senior statesman. A year later, the military staged a coup and armoured cars arrived in front of Pridi's Bangkok riverside residence. Pridi had already been tipped off, though, and spent the week hiding under the care of Admiral Sindhu Songkhramchai at Royal Thai Navy headquarters. On November 20, he was smuggled to Singapore by British and US agents, before making his way to North America via Shanghai. “The 1947 coup effectively ended Pridi’s role in Thai politics and was followed by several attempts by adversaries to strip him of his Senior Statesman title,” said Wichitwong. “Pridi spent 36 years in exile until his death in France in 1983 at the age of 84.”

How close is a vaccine ?

From NY Times Pfizer’s Early Data Shows Vaccine Is More Than 90% Effective The drug maker Pfizer announced on Monday that an early analysis of its coronavirus vaccine trial suggested the vaccine was robustly effective in preventing Covid-19, a promising development as the world has waited anxiously for any positive news about a pandemic that has killed more than 1.2 million people. Pfizer, which developed the vaccine with the German drugmaker BioNTech, released only sparse details from its clinical trial, based on the first formal review of the data by an outside panel of experts. The company said that the analysis found that the vaccine was more than 90 percent effective in preventing the disease among trial volunteers who had no evidence of prior coronavirus infection. If the results hold up, that level of protection would put it on par with highly effective childhood vaccines for diseases such as measles. No serious safety concerns have been observed, the company said. Pfizer plans to ask the Food and Drug Administration for emergency authorization of the two-dose vaccine later this month, after it has collected the recommended two months of safety data. By the end of the year it will have manufactured enough doses to immunize 15 to 20 million people, company executives have said. Independent scientists have cautioned against hyping early results before long-term safety and efficacy data has been collected. And no one knows how long the vaccine’s protection might last. Still, the development makes Pfizer the first company to announce positive results from a late-stage vaccine trial, vaulting it to the front of a frenzied global race that began in January and has unfolded at record-breaking speed. Eleven vaccines are in late-stage trials, including four in the United States. Pfizer’s progress could bode well for Moderna’s vaccine, which uses similar technology. Moderna has said it could have early results later this month.

  22. This is nothing new, foreigners are ID checked at most major nightspots and ordered to buy bottles at the door. They also have an uncanny ability to distinguish other Asians from Thais, and spot go go boys entering with customers. The boys are welcomed like old friends, their customers are shown the priciest drinks. Fortunately DJ Station is exempt from this practice ! Babe from Moonlight is a fan of Barbarbar because it is sufficiently hi-so!

  23. From The Thaiger PM congratulates US President-elect Joe Biden After the tight race for United States president, Thailand’s prime minister sent a message congratulating President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on their victory against incumbents President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence. Reports say that Biden’s win could benefit Thailand. The Bangkok Post says trade tension between the US and China could ease up. The Thai Chamber of Commerce chairperson Kalin Sarasin says the US is likely to rejoin the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and Thailand should be prepared for possible negotiations involving free trade agreements. PM Prayut Chan-o-cha sent a message to Biden, congratulating both Biden and Harris on their win and adding that he is ready to enhance Thai-US relations. I wish to extend to you and Senator Kamala Harris my warm congratulations on your election victory and the trust that you have earned from American voters. “With the long-standing ties of friendship between our countries, dating back more than 200 years, Thailand, as the first treaty partner of the United States in Asia, takes pride in our strategic partnership, which contributes to our mutual benefit and the region’s peace, stability and prosperity. “On behalf of the government and the people of the Kingdom of Thailand, I wish you every success and look forward to working closely with you and your administration to enhance further our cooperation at all levels.”

The line that resonated most for me: "Slavery is an abomination ........ but neither I or any man have any immediate solution to the problem." How's that for understatement? Different century, but we're dealing with much of the same shit today. I suspect that clip was a highly white-washed portrayal of some of those men. We know about Jefferson and owning slaves. I don't feel he was a particularly good guy. I am now completely rabid about getting rid of the slavery electoral college. There's lots of scholars, especially Black ones, that can make a great argument that the electoral college is all about the ownership and blood of slaves. And there are plenty of "originalist" sources to go to to connect the dots and show the intent of "the Founding fathers" was to build institutions, like the electoral college, that were designed to support slavery. It is the last of our immediate problems, I know. And I also know we don't have the power to do anything about it right now. Talk about STILL not having an immediate solution to the problem. But it infuriates me that Biden will win this election by up to 5 million votes. And yet we have to go through this process of discussing whether the election was stolen from President Toxic. In no other country that even pretends to be a democracy would this be happening. To the extent that we're going to have noise, I'd rather have noise about how the electoral college is an institution built to support the ownership of Blacks as property. As opposed to how people feel about whether poll watchers should be six feet away from ballot counters in the middle of a deadly pandemic. Again, in no other democracy where someone just won by 5 million votes could this be happening. It makes me feel even worse about the kind of people who actually support this nonsense. There was an interesting discussion on CNN this week between Rep. Clyburn and Don Lemon. As always, Lemon was not exactly being a detached journalist. In fact, he was in tears, talking about how hearing Biden tell Blacks "You had my back, so I will have yours" made him cry as he heard it. He is not the only Black that said that on TV. The emotion and redemption in some of these moments and symbols this week was very deep and powerful. That was clear. Lemon was basically bitching as a Black man about how slow and difficult progress is. And how frustrating it is to even try to be objective interviewing people who are racists who unabashedly support Trump's racist nonsense. Clyburn got into this riff about his relationship with John Lewis and Elijah Cummings. How they became fast friends when they met and formed SNCC in the 60's. How close his religious and geographic roots with Cummings were. The love and dignity of these men, two of whom are now dead, was palpable as Clyburn went on in his riff with Lemon. But his basic point was what we would all guess. Be patient. Stay focused. Keep your eyes on the prize. Clyburn just gave an epic - one might say Biblical - example of how that works in real time with what he did with Biden in 2020. It has changed America for the good. I was in tears yesterday, too. I didn't know much about Clyburn until 2020. I am now in awe of the man. I feel America, and especially Democrats, are gifted with his wise and moral leadership. That's a way to rewrite the scene portrayed in what you posted, Adam. We still don't have any immediate solutions. I would argue we just escaped a brush with the degradation or even death of democracy. That might be going too far, since having maybe up to 150 million people vote in what was essentially a free election isn't exactly a bad example of democracy. But it was very messy, like that discussion about slavery in the clip you posted. One thing I feel good about is the discussion we just had wasn't one limited to or led by solely White men who own property, which in some cases is Black men. The key players in this debate on my side were people like Biden, Clyburn, Harris, Pelosi, Schumer. That's progress. The moral grounding of what just happened was in fact based on the words and ideals of men like Jim Clyburn, John Lewis, Elijah Cummings. So I'll take this as proof that MLK was right. We just saw the arc of the moral universe bend. 2020 is messy and sad. But if we listen to the words of men like Clyburn, Lewis, and Cummings, America will do well. That is truly a gift from God.

    Thais Protest King

Just keep in mind that besides the terrible laws in Thailand that protect the image and the institution of the monarchy, there has also always been extreme social pressure to preserve, protect, and revere it. Even when you go to see a movie, before the film starts theatres all play the King's anthem, and everyone stands in silence. To not stand would have always(?) been inconceivable.
