I Can’t Catch a Break I’ve been wondering about these types of questions a lot recently: Why do I keep going to Brazil? Why did I brave traveling thousands of miles away, to a different continent, during a deadly pandemic? Why did I bother learn a language that I have no use for at home, and may not have use for outside this godforsaken country? Well I think I just got as close to an answer as I will ever be, right now. Back in Recife, in Termas Boa Vista, on a busy Saturday night, I was sitting in the bar, minding my own business, until this guy, THE guy, tapped my shoulder to say hi. I turned around. He came into view. Well, well, well. Maybe Recife isn’t so bad in the hot guy department after all. He was tall, well built, with giant biceps, a big chest and sculpted abs. And it wasn’t just musculature, it was defined musculature, which seems like splitting hairs, but it really isn’t, not if you were making the distinction from some run-of-the-mill Carioca bombado with lots of help from steroids, and this guy. Nope, this was active musculature. The kind that can only be attained through hard work at the gym and through sports, a mind for aesthetics, and of course, winning the genetic lottery. As I gathered my jaw off the floor, he sat down on the empty seat in front of me. I tried to answer them as straightforward as I could, and some of the questions were a bit personal, but I tried to answer with as much light-heartedness as I could. Which seemed to work. He was laughing and getting what I was trying to convey. He finally answers my own probing questions, and I got to the point where I was lost in the conversation itself, and not the guy - with the imposing physical presence - in front of me. We got to the topic of Recife itself. He asked me what I thought of it, and what I thought of this sauna as well. I was candid, telling him about the last time I was here, including details about the BF (I called him ex-BF of course, to convey a sense of availableness). He was interested in this particular detail of course, peppering me afterwards with questions about the relationship, the dynamic of the pairing, and why it “ended.” I tried to be as forthcoming as I could, under the circumstances. I was rewarded with his a tale of his own series of failed relationships, all with women, as well as hearing his philosophy on relationships in general. There was interest in both sides, for certain, but I was wondering why he was not making overtures to get me to a programa. He was after all, a GP, and making a sale is why he is here. I told him I was staying in Boa Viagem. He said that he was staying in Boa Viagem too, and we could go home in the same taxi together. I said sure, so I whipped out my phone for Uber. He pushed my phone away and says no need for that, we can get the taxi waiting in front. "I'm paying," he said. He says he knew the guy and was always his ride home after the sauna and he gets a discount for being a loyal customer. A red flag perhaps? But no, I trusted him, for some reason. I gave the driver directions, and the driver acknowledged that we, indeed, lived close to each other. As we made the journey from Boa Vista to Boa Viagem, we continued to kiss. I looked at the driver at times. He was unfazed. He has probably seen everything before, with hundreds of clients, and this boy. As we get closer to my apartment, the boy asks me again if I was going to see him tomorrow. I promised him that I would. We exchanged Whatsapp. We kiss again. We compose ourselves as the taxi stops in front of my apartment building. I give him the 150 reais. He declines the money. “We didn’t do anything!” he says. I insisted, he resisted. “I took all your time away from you,” I said. He then counters with “I already had 3 clients before you showed up today, so I was already good for the day.” I laugh. Fine, I said. I give him a peck on the cheek, and then, as I get out of the car, turned around and threw the 50 reais bill in the passenger seat. “For the taxi!” I said. He laughed. “Tabom” he says. I slam the car door shut. They drive away into the night. Relunctantly again, I then message the GP couple who were waiting for me to reply. I could not cancel on them. It was the right thing to do. They might have cancelled on some other clients to be with me. Besides, it is two hot guys to have fun with till tomorrow afternoon. It might be good for me. And it was, sort of. The sex was good (did it three times, everyone was crazy versatile). We had three meals together (with good conversation). We went to the beach (the sun was amazing). But all that time, I was thinking about that guy. THAT guy. I was distracted through the whole thing. Even with two dicks waved in my face. Can you blame me? And at 2 AM, after the first sex with the GP couple, and after getting pizza to be delivered, I get a message from THAT guy. He sent me a picture of two hamburgers and a receipt of his iFood delivery: He then follows up with “This is what I did with the 50 reais you gave me tonight. The second hamburger is yours because you paid for it. Do you want to come here and eat it with me?” I wanted to say yes, but knew I couldn’t because I had company. But it was a sweet reminder for me that you never really know what the universe will send your way. All you can do is to be open to the possibilities. Let’s see what the possibilities are, next.

I'm not in South America so it impossible for me to "stay" in Brazil. That's your geography lesson for today. But on to more important matters. You have called me a racist. That's an outright lie. The reason most farang do not speak Thai is laziness. I know - I am one of them (although I do speak a little). If tones are the problem, why is it that many foreigners living in Hong Kong and the south of China can master the 9 tones required in Cantonese, or those living in the north the 4 tones in Mandarin? The same is true for grammar. Why should it be any more difficult for a foreigner learning Thai than an Englishman learning German? The grammar is not very similar.

This topic does interest me a lot too. Being a bilingual myself, and studying two other languages in high school and university, learning the differences between languages is fun. I also helplessly trying to venture few more languages but learning languages does requires a lot of effort and times. English with their tenses and pronounciation, malay with the prefix/suffix, french with their conjugation and word gender, arabic with their jointed script and gender (quite diff than french), now thai (chinese, vietnamese as well) and the tones. Korean alphabet is also very interesting as it is clearly man-made and well documented too. Maybe when i have more time, id start to learn thai lol. There is obvious advantage of knowing the language that might greatly improve my experience there so motivation is there lol

Seems you are missing the point ehre. Of course it is "really" illegal in Thailand. The question is, is that law (consistently) enforced? The answer to that is obvious, that the reason for that answers should be obvious, too (ie. tea money). The tea money issue might be the major roadblock in change the law, because both police and military will not be willing to give that up so easily, plus they often even own or have stakes in such establishments. As for being Buddhist, I don't know if that's a real reason for making it illegal. Thailand has always been Buddhist and according to the article prostitution was only made illegal in 1960. Why then and not before? I do not know, but being Buddhist hasn't changed before or after that year.

The sex workers are looking for acknowledgement that they are service providers and desire equal protection under the law. Those services attract a considerable share of tourism in any given year, bolstering the Thai economy. That's your sociology and economics lessons for today. As always, there's no need to thank me.

After reading all the exciting reports, and been staying at home for more than half a year, finally decided to take on a September brazil trip. I have been to thailand a couple times, this is my first time to brazil. Non-sex related stuff, if thailand is a 10, brazil is a 3. 1, do not take money from atm in shopping malls in brazil, they charge 12% wholesale fee, no idea what is the fee about. Go to a brazil bank and use their atm machine 2, do not try to get a local sim card, it took me 5 hours in a big tim store in a shoppibg mall in sao paulo and 3 in person visits, first time, it will be activated in one hour, second day, we will activate your sim in 24 hours, third time, something is wrong with your credit card, it will take around 72 hours to fix. What the fuck, i told them do not bother to fix it. 3, in thailand, I barely feel language barrier, while in brazil, this is a issue everyday from restaurants to shopping. Brazil is not a tourist country, they do not know how to handle foreigners, be prepared 4, food in brazil is just so so, missing thai food

This is definitely one of them. During World War II, Thai Prime Minister Plaek Phibunsongkram famously allied Thailand with the Japanese and the Axis Powers and declared war against the Allies. Yet, at the end of the war, Thailand somehow emerged as a friend of the Allied Powers – not exactly a victor, but not a defeated nation by any means. Most importantly, Thailand emerged from WW2 as a free and independent nation. This was the doing of Seri Thai, Thailand’s underground ‘Free Thai’ resistance movement, which worked with the US and UK against the Japanese occupation. The movement involved people from all walks of life — from anti-royalists, to purebred royals, schoolteachers, government officials, family members, to students. It was a coordinated resistance against the multiple oppressions that Thailand faced and continues to face today: the oppression of a nationalist military government, and the imperialist occupier that the military had invited to its doorstep. Although the Seri Thai movement is well remembered, it is not often remembered correctly. For sure it is better, but it is no comparison with what Edgar did, -- he was there almost every night and ran the stripper/drag shows. It takes just ONE visionary entrepreneur to set the tone and create a great vibe for a whole city. Edgar was also partners with Junior in starting Point 202 -- I think he financed it while Junior was the managing partner. I think if someone wanted to make a lot of money, create as grand an experience as the old Lagoa in Sao Paolo -- or in other cities, but there is probably no better selection of rent boys anywhere in the world than Sao Paulo or Rio.

Empower Foundation, a Chiang Mai-based group that supports sex workers, said it hoped to collect 10,000 signatures and present the petition to parliament to help persuade lawmakers to consider changing the country's prostitution law. "The law punishes sex workers - 80% of whom are mothers and the main breadwinner for the whole family," said Mai Junta, a representative from Empower. "It turns us into criminals," she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation on Tuesday. More than 1,000 people had signed the petition since it was launched on Saturday. Thailand is predominantly Buddhist and deeply conservative, but is home to an extensive sex industry, largely catering to Thai men. Hordes of tourists also flock to the bright lights of go-go bars and massage parlours in the Thai capital Bangkok, and the country's main tourist towns. Women and LGBT+ rights activists say the current law, which made prostitution illegal in 1960, does little to protect sex workers, while repeated arrests and fines for doing sex work has driven them further into poverty. The women's affairs department at Thailand's Ministry of Social Development and Human Security said it was in the process of amending the prostitution law and would launch an online public hearing next year, without giving further details. "We are aware of complaints regarding rights violations of sex workers due to this law... and we are not neglecting their suggestions (to repeal the law)," a spokesman said. Making prostitution legal have huge impact to both the sex worker and their client. They can be protected under the employment act law, received benefits such as medical insurance, and i guess would require to pay tax and contribute to pension plan if there is any. They could also seek legal help if any of these rights are being abused or denied. Its not just for the sake of saying the act of prostitution itself happening in thailand or not...

good point on the Chinese comparison, if that's the case that many foreigners living there master those tones. In my opinion based on my experience it is best to learn the tones by NOT making a conscious effort to do so, but to let the ears and the brain "tune into" them over time. It does take time and patience (up to a year), but then it all happens naturally and you wonder how you ever could NOT distinguish them. Another observation on the tones: it is a myth that western languages do not have tones. They do not have tones in individual words that would change their meaning, but they have tones in sentence structures. Consider these sentences, which in their word content are 100% identical, but not in their meaning: It is raining. It is raining? The spoken distinction is ONLY in the tone, making them distinguishable as a statement and a question. So the claim to be "tone deaf" when it comes to languages is simply an excuse. I do acknowledge though that it (a) takes time to be able to distinguish the tone in words (see above) and (b) to get used to the tones' meaning changing quality in words rather than sentences and (c) that in Thai you cannot change a sentence into a question by changing the tone (or sentence melody if you will); Thai always requires a dedicated question word.

they are unvoiced and unaspirated, that is true, but they are still "audible". Similar to the ending "p" in "stop" which is usually unaspirated (if I'm not mistaken). Or the leading "b" in "bus" or "boy". Not sure what wikipedia means by "no audible release". It surprises me a lot that you say that "to me กะ kà, กับ kàp, กัด kàt all sound more or less same same (spoken by a Thai)." Maybe you just need some more listening exposure to allow your ears to "tune in" on these sounds?

The problem is that the tourism sector play significant part at the Thai economy ,if the restrictions on traveling to Thailand continue very long period the tourism industry might coulopsed with many hotels and business go bankruptcy without any option to reopen again once the appademic is over , millions will be unemployed. Getting out of the Rio/Sao Paulo Bubble Even in non-COVID times, some of the other cities in Brazil are unfortunately neglected when it comes to the general public’s knowledge about visiting Brazil. Which would be a mistake, obviously, because there are untold riches out there that are not found in the doorsteps of Lagoa or Point 202, and even during the pandemic, this fact is still true. The BF and I were discussing possible getaways to the Northeast (Nordeste) of the country to get away from the Southern (Santa Catarina) and the Southeastern (Rio and SP) parts of Brazil that we were staying in. With COVID still a big thing, not all cities had all the usual services open. At the time of our research, the usual reliable Salvador had their beaches still “officially” closed with the pandemic still raging there. The one city that held promise, as well as having open beaches and allowing street vendors, was the other big Northeastern city: Recife. We have been to this city once before, trip report here, and we had much fun traipsing through the beaches and I had fun with one of the saunas: Termas Boa Vista, report here. So its my own damn fault that I decided to get a BF, while at the same time, whoring it up in Brazil. I’ll spare you the details, but as our Recife trip drew closer, the BF tells me to just go to the city alone, as we needed to “evaluate” our relationship. So I find myself getting on the plane to Recife, from Rio, alone, without my sidekick all this time. In all honesty, the break was necessary, and there was nothing like Recife’s beaches and sun, to help clear one’s mind of one’s mistakes and wrong-headedness. So my trip went from a lover’s getaway, to a whore trip, or so I thought. More on that later. I’m gonna reserve my comments on Recife’s COVID response on maybe a future post, but for now, let’s focus on my first trip to Recife’s main sauna, Termas Boa Vista. It is named as such because it is in the Boa Vista district in the main part of Recife. I’ve been to this sauna only once before, and have no qualms going back, especially since I am suddenly alone this trip. As with what other posters here have commented, even if this was a Brazilian sauna, this was not Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, so therefore, maybe, there are less of the painfully perfect adonises here than in those other two cities, and, maybe, Recife saunas were filled with more of the cute boy-next-door types. Which meant that the boys here were a little bit cheaper, starting at 50 reais (!) to the standard 100 reais for a good programa with a decent boy. Signage at the front door shows the hours and entrance fee: At other saunas, the opening hours of 3 PM to 10 PM seems standard, but this is Recife, and pre-COVID, the closing time was 6 AM (!). Yes, they have a per noite rate here, like a motel, and you can stay with your favorite boy toy till the morning (or you) came, for less than what you would in RJ or SP for an hour. If you go to their Facebook site for Termas Boa Vista, you see some regulars lamenting the fact that their per noite system is temporarily unavailable due to COVID. I don’t see any reason for me to stay in a sauna for that long, knowing that I find saunas, in general, kind of gross and unappetizing, but still, the option was at least intriguing. OK, I take back the “gross and unappetizing” part of my comment earlier. Indeed, certain saunas need a little cleaning up (I’m looking at you Point 202), but Termas Boa Vista was then, and is still now, perhaps the cleanest saunas I’ve ever been to in Brazil. Also, the space itself reminds me of my days in Sao Paulo's Thermas Lagoa (the old location), which had more than ample open space, enough that you can get lost in, to frolic and mingle. They don’t have a pool here (unlike Thermas Lagoa), but everything else was pretty open and had its place. For example: The nightclub part of the sauna (every sauna has them), where there is a stage and seating are, is in a separate part of the building. There is even a short corridor that separates it from the rest of the sauna. Which is useful sometimes if you want to avoid this part of the sauna, or at least to avoid the "noise" of the entertainment. Places like Espaco Lagoa has both the main bar and the stage area in the same place, so if the upstairs bar was closed, you’d have to go to the fairly busy stage area to get a drink. A pain sometimes, especially if you just want to get a drink and not see the show. The bar is, as I said, separate from the stage area and everything else: And drinks are cheap(er) than what you see in SP and RJ: If you were ever worried about COVID (and looking around in this sauna, it seems that no one is worried about it, due to no mask wearing, among other things), the bar area had very ample ventilation, as seen below. You can see the sky and there was a healthy breeze going through the area, to mitigate transmission (I guess). The gods blessed the Northeast of Brazil with great weather, so they can afford to be open like this: There’s a lot of other things I can say about this sauna, but let’s talk about the boys. There are less boys here than in SP and RJ. And there are way more clients, proportionally (it is the opposite in the RJ saunas these days). And there are even less boys I would consider to be hot enough for me to pay for it. Last time I was here, I got a hot boy to fuck, but he would be considered average in Club 117. But I am not in RJ, so I have to adjust my expectations accordingly, otherwise I’d be just doing the comparison game (i.e. RJ has better looking boys!), which will make me wonder why I am in Recife in the first place. I get some weird looks, and I am used to that, since I am probably atypical of what the average client is like. I was just observing, drinking, biding my time. I see about one or two boys that was a maybe for me. But noone really stood out, so I just sat there, waiting. I've had zero trouble canceling OnlyFans guys. Part of their model is that you will cancel some and subscribe to others fairly regularly. So the "unsubscribe" button is prominent on each feed. OnlyFans feeds get extremely boring for the most part after you've subscribed for a while. Not much new happens, just repeats of same routines over and over. Hard for them to stay interesting. And many do almost nothing to start except for posing. OnlyFans is extremely 2017.

So, just to be clear, any photos with any nudity at all (not just explicit action/porn shots) are now specifically disallowed in a general section, such as the Latin American Men and Destinations area? I had posted some nudes in a report I did there. Maybe it would be better to edit the report, so the thread stays in the relevant section? That would of course mean that people would need the ability to (at least temporarily) edit older posts. I for one would be happy to edit the photos to remove the nudity.
