Bangkok 2020 trip report
stijntje and 2 others reacted to DivineMadman for a topic
I keep in contact with a bunch of guys from all over - Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia. With a few it's daily, and with a few others more like a couple of times a week. I also "actively" follow 3-4 more guys on Facebook (with mutual "likes" and comments, etc.), but that's less of a connection as far as I'm concerned. Actually, not much of a change between pre-COVID-19 and now. No requests for money - so far - but lots of mutual complaining about the current situation and overly-optimistic thoughts about when we can be getting back together again. In the current shelter-at-home world, it's no exaggeration that the countless pictures and videos and idle chit-chat with the guys is the highpoint of my day. But I've always said that I have been very lucky with the guys that I've gotten to know.3 points -
Hollywood by Ryan Murphy

I think it's absolutely dreadful. I had to stop watching after the utterly fake Academy Awards scene, with Rock Hudson kissing his Black lover, Archie, for all to see. What the fuck is Ryan Murphy smoking? Like most Ryan Murphy TV shows, Netflix's Hollywood is total camp fantasy. It's not the worst thing on television, but it's far from great. Period productions are not cheap. They're spending some serious money on this one, and most of that money should have gone to the unemployed freelancers. Still, for a gay audience, there is some fun eye candy. David Corenswet may be wearing too much make-up, but he sure looks sexy naked. His pairing with Judd Apatow's daughter is limp-wristed, but the marriage is supposed to be rocky. His character manages to fend off the gay predators, but the story would be far more interesting had he fallen prey, like so many straight men did in the 50's and 60's. Rob Reiner as a studio chief is perfect. Patti LuPone as his over-produced wife is a stretch. Patti has gained some serious weight in recent years. To play this part, she is corseted and wigged for RuPaul's Drag Race. One can only imagine her pain while shooting her scenes. The costumers wrapped her in so much fabric, thinking that might slender her down. Fail. She's too fat to do sex scenes with young Hollywood hunks. It's all embarrassingly laughable. I wanted to vomit as Corenswet went down on her to lick her pussy. You may have to look quick, but certain poses reveal how thick Patty is in the middle. They try to cover it with ridiculous sleeve tricks, but it all looks excessive. Jaye Picking would be fine as a high school jock on Glee, but he's no Rock Hudson. Awful casting. The fake teeth are SO BAD after he visits the dentist. Laura Harrier does not look real or believable to me as a Black actress of the time. I'm not buying her relationship with Darren Criss' character either. Criss may be straight in real life, but he films gay (or soft), no matter what you do with him. I love the mega talented Jeremy Pope but I think he's totally miscast as Rock Hudson's lover. I'm not convinced the Hollywood cameras like his face. He's better suited on stage. The self-hating homo scumbag agent, Henry Willson, is perfectly played by Jim Parsons,, wearing a ton of make-up. However, why the fuck can't the make-up artists match his face skin to his body? Willson must have been a monster in real life. He died a penniless addict with an unmarked grave. One can only imagine the famous cocks he sucked. Dylan McDermott as famous pimp Scotty Bowers is annoying, if you can get past that awful grey wig. Holland Taylor going after Joe Mantello made my skin crawl. I think she's old enough to be Joe's mother, and "Dick" is gay. Good grief. How the fuck did this shit get financed? There is a great story to be told about this time in history, but this isn't it.3 points -
Agree...When I was more frequently visiting Pattaya, my hotel base was (and hopefully will be) The Poseidon in Jomtien. The hotel has no business, surprise, but has taken to feeding folks. They do this once or twice a week and provide 450+ meals each time. I've decided this is a good place to provide financial support. I haven't had a direct request from any of the guys I know though I have heard from many...they complan about the lack of work but are happy to away from Bangkok where the virus is...at least it is in their minds and they don't want another quarantine. Starting week 8 of the California lockdown.3 points

It all started a few weeks ago when photos of the army’s elite devision, La Legión, began recirculating on social media after it had been deployed to help manage the country’s coronavirus outbreak. As everyone was quarantined in their homes, they began re-sharing photos of the soldiers in their signature pastel green uniforms, tight-fitting pants, and distinctively low-cut shirts. The Spanish Army creating a lockdown looks gayer than any gay pride event I’ve ever attended.2 points

It is a Romantic fantasy about a Hollywood that does not and has never existed. The connexions with the real history go vanishing as the episodes progress. I loved it. I hope they start the second season with the movie they are filming where the first one closes.2 points -

Airbnb hosts revolt
splinter1949 reacted to reader for a topic
From CNBC Airbnb hosts are building their own direct booking websites in revolt Short-term rental hosts are banding together and launching their own direct-booking websites in an effort to diversify their business after years of mounting frustration with Airbnb and other short-term rental providers. Some of these websites were already in the works. But many hosts have recently prioritized their own direct-booking websites after a turbulent past two months, as the coronavirus pandemic spurred widespread cancellations and many grew unhappy with Airbnb’s reimbursement policies. Although these independent websites lack the consumer base that comes with a large service such as Airbnb, they give hosts more power when it comes to how they brand and market their properties. Direct-booking websites also offer hosts an avenue where they can rent their properties to guests at a cheaper price while generating a higher profit than they can when a middleman such as Airbnb is involved. Additionally, they offer hosts more control over situations where guests request refunds, cause damage or complain about a property, according to numerous short-term rental hosts who spoke with CNBC. Competition from these new direct-booking websites represents the latest challenge for Airbnb, which has endured a tough 2020. The company had lined up bankers to lead a public offering, which would test whether Airbnb could live up to its $31 billion private market valuation from 2017. But as the coronavirus decimated travel around the world, the company instead raised $2 billion in new debt funding at a valuation of $18 billion and announced major cost-cutting initiatives, including plans to lay off 25% of its staff, or nearly 1,900 employees.1 point -
We are in the midst of middle of a pandemic. Many people are out of work, not by choice: so-called couch potatoes also exercise and read as well as watch television.1 point

On considerable observation, I think New York native Fauci, in his rather muted public rebukes to DJT, is telling his boss in very quiet native language Don’t fuck with me, or our policies. You will come down if you do.1 point

HUNKY HEROS These three Marines helped restrain an unruly passenger on a flight from Japan to Dallas. I know that I would have listened to them. https://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/ny-three-marines-restrain-disruptive-passenger-japan-flight-20200506-nenvr6g6y5euvm6e7zwtc7jce4-story.html1 point

A wise comment. How many of the world's population can afford to support someone in a foreign country? how many here in the UK? I've sent a lot of money over the past fifteen plus years; never have I had to make serious personal sacrifices in terms of my own comfort. I count myself lucky, particularly n view of the happiness P brings me, even in a twenty minute LINE call. Of course, he would propose the Buddhist view that in fact, he is doing me a favour by allowing me to "make merit"....or something like that!1 point

The Death of Expertise Is an article on PBS that speaks to what I think is one of the most dangerous phenomenons in our contemporary life. The Internet has empowered everybody to be able to express an opinion, so now vast swaths of the world want to replace actual knowledge with their fact free opinions. Moron culture thrives cause everybody is entitled to their opinion, right? Never mind that people think the right to that opinion means they have the right to be respected for whatever idiocy they've espoused. Being locked in the house all day watching so many of my fellow Americans demonstrate their stunning idiocy has not been that good for my mental health.1 point
