I also think it will take years to overcome and will make life maddening for a while. However, the 2 trillion injection was insane. If it were for the people, I'd be all for it. But, I do not like the way it was distributed. And, of course, Trump had to have his name on the check. What a dipshit.3 points

Yes. Death accident is not contagious. Covid-19 is. And we have seen much wealthier countries with much better healthcare being overwhelm by covid-19 and death counts were in ten of thousands because they didnt shut down their economy early enough. Thailand death toll is low because they of this, and they will continue to do all they can to avoid being the next USA (used to be italy, and before that, wuhan)2 points

I have really enjoyed Empire since the beginning. I thought Jussie did a great job portraying a gay character as part of the main cast. This week's episode was the last one. It was enjoyable to watch and it ended on a good note. However, I am very disappointed that they mentioned Jussie's character and did not show any scenes of him at all in the last episode. I get it. He fucked up (maybe). But, they used this character's name several times in this episode and flashbacks. But, no Jussie. I was disappointed. It was a let down for me. I know he was not rehired for this season. But, he was such a great part of the show and to even not show old clips of him I thought was sad.1 point

RockHard, you crack me up. But, I'd always rather had an OK cup of coffee (does the deed) and a lot of hot guys cruising than tranquility any day of the week. I'm a guy snob and love to look at as many as possible. Lucky, you would have made a mint!1 point

Suspend 90-day reporting rule
splinter1949 reacted to reader for a topic
From Khaosod English Gov’t Extends Foreigners’ Stay to July 31, Halts 90-Day Report BANGKOK — The government on Tuesday approved another round of automatic visa extension for foreigners residing in Thailand, this time for a further three months. Government spokeswoman Narumon Pinyosinwat said the Cabinet agreed with the plan proposed by the Immigration Bureau to permit foreigners whose visas had expired since March 26 to stay further until July 31 without having to apply for an extension at immigration offices. “The outbreak of COVID-19 in Thailand and other countries remains unresolved,” Naruemon said. “If we don’t extend permission to stay, foreigners would have to come to see immigration officers. It would cause overcrowding and risk of infection.” Naruemon said the 90-day report requirement is also suspended. The government granted a similar extension earlier this month, allowing stranded foreigners to stay without legal repercussions until April 30. The move came after widespread complaints of overcrowding and risk of coronavirus infection at immigration offices across the country.1 point -

This is good in several respects, people would have been grateful for the food and it was important that the District Boss saw for himself the problems that his people are currently under. But next week, and the week after, and the week after that, how will these people cope? Closing the bars of Pattaya will now be having more profound impacts up country as the girls and boys who worked in those bars are no longer sending money back to the villages.1 point

While I all over the place identify as a hard-lefty, I also remember the Founders had no notion at all of partisan politics. They thought we would be a never-ending cacophony & competition of individual independent political views, to the common good. What things have descended to today with K Street, the Court’s allowance of outright commercial theft of the vote, etc etc.1 point

In 2019 the weekly death toll in Thailand from road accidents was 230 people. (Academics caution that this figure only relates to those who die at the scene, and the actual death toll is far higher when when all all data is collated, and when victims succumb to their injuries after leaving the accident scene.) According to the John Hopkins site the deaths so far from Covid 19 in Thailand stand at 48, as of 22nd April. As in all countries I expect the real C19 death numbers are higher. But the Thai government has not shut down the economy, introduced a curfew and made alcohol sales illegal to stop road deaths. Is this logical?1 point

So, again (literally EVERY Republican presidency of my life) the Republican president has massively ballooned the debt and crashed the economy, and the Democrat will get to fix it, again, while being screamed at about the debt the entire time. Your party is talking about bailing out the fucking OIL INDUSTRY. Yeah, in addition to all the subsidies and environmental clean up, an actual direct cash injection. But making sure everybody has access to fucking healthcare (especially NOW), oh hell no. Yes, it is partisan politics as usual, and your party is on the WRONG FUCKING SIDE yet again.1 point

Trump's Liberation Push
AdamSmith reacted to Latbear4blk for a topic
It is not a rant, my friend. Since the beginning of Trump, I have been trying to remember that he is not the problem. When a decrepit candidate like Biden talks about going back to normal, it sounds to me just like another version of MAGA. The racists and the fascists have always been there, since more than a century before Trump ascension. It is challenging to remember that Donald is not the problem, though. He is obnoxiously tempting.1 point -
That's my take also. Trump is an authoritarian leader and there are more waiting in the wings when his time has passed - always have been, always will be. Our problem, in my opinion, is authoritarian followers. Rather than comparing Trump and Hitler, I've long been more interested in comparing Weimar Germans with today's U. S. citizenry. And it's pretty clear that, like a sizable portion of Third Reich Germans, our citizens today are willing to follow someone who does their thinking for them and will promise them protection from outside forces: the "other". The more their fears of the "other" are stoked, the more tightly they'll cleave to their "leader". And they will act - and vote - against their own interests. You can see this pattern repeated under Hitler, who had loyal followers even as firestorms swirled around them. You can see it in the bodies on the ground in Jim Jones' Guyana. And you can see it in the Trump followers voting to do away with their own health insurance. As far as I can tell, there's a genetic component to authoritarianism, in addition to learned behavior. I believe this because of its historical persistence in the human race, and its appearance in many other social species. And I believe that there are times in the evolution of the human species when human survival may depend on the willingness of large parts of the species to blindly follow an authoritarian "leader". From what I've read, there's a persistent 30% - 40% of humans who are hard-wired to be unquestioning followers. And I believe that's why Trump has such a persistent base. His authoritarian followers want things made simple, they want to be protected from the "other", they want to "believe", and they will sacrifice their own interests to do so. I also believe that, while the Republican party, as currently constituted, may attract more than its share of authoritarian followers, the Democratic party has some too. My bet is that some of Sanders' most loyal supporters fit the mold, in particular the ones who would rather vote for Trump than for Biden or Warren. I've posted about some of these beliefs elsewhere, and I'm still trying to learn everything I can about these folks. I think that, while authoritarian "followers" may be necessary at certain times in human evolution and the gene will persist, this is not one of those times. There are more important human qualities that are needed now - some also with genetic components - such as altruism, empathy and compassion. How to help bring these qualities forward, while pushing authoritarian obedience to the background, is what takes up much of my attention these days. Sorry for the rant, yet thanks for the opportunity to do so.1 point

Separation is hard for all of us but it is has always been part of human life; think of the families kept apart by war or by the demands of work. In these circumstances, we must accept that those we love may well depend on us and to continue to support them. And it's easier for us to do so now that we are globally connected. When I first met P seventeen years ago , it was much harder....even mobile phones weren't always available. I bought him his first one in Tuc Com, then only a quarter of the size it it is now. Now we can talk anytime we like by phone or on LINE. So I'm grateful, even if sometimes I feel sad when we finish our conversation. On a positive note, I'm confident that in four so months we shall be together with our loved ones.1 point

This is what happens worldwide when people can't take care of their families. As a frequent visitor to Brazil, I have seen the rise in crime during economic hard time. It is sad for sure and it is the government's responsibility to take care of this. If they do not, things will get worse.1 point -

When booking domestic flights on Avianca switch your location to Colombia on the home page of the website(you can then view the site in either english or spanish). You will pay in Colombian pesos but will generally save significant money vs the USA version of the site even if your credit card changes a conversion fee(my Capitol One card does not).1 point

April Colombia 18 Day Trip - Itinerary Suggestions
curiousnature12 reacted to macdaddi for a topic
I am a big fan of Avianca in Colombia. The discount airlines can be problematic (won't bore you with the details) so be certain that Easyfly or Viva Air are the best option/schedule before booking. They are generally reliable, but from experience when things go wrong (weather, delays, etc.) then the service falls apart. Most Colombian business people swear by Avianca and their lounges are very popular and busy. Because most flights inter-city in Colombia are around the hour mark, it is generally not worth the extra money to fly business class. I find the economy service on most Aviance flights is superiour to many North American routes. The additional cost isn't worth it.1 point -

Movie: Marriage Story
Buddy2 reacted to RockHardNYC for a topic
I'm not a particular fan of Noah Baumbach. I hated the first thirty minutes of the film. I hated the way they styled Scarlett Johansson. I thought her lesbian look was all wrong for this character. I enjoyed Azhy Robertson's complex performance. I thought the fight scene between Adam and Scarlett was superb. Adam deserves an award nod for this scene. In the end, I thought the film was interesting. I didn't find the story depressing at all. Love often changes between people who mean well. It's how we deal with that change that determines the outcome. I thought the story showed hope. That a failed marriage doesn't have to mean a failed love. In a way, the story reminded me of some of the gay love stories I have encountered. Deep, loving relationships that changed over time, and the men remained friends when all the drama of the break up was over.1 point
