I was a bit sick this week and went to hospital as I was dehydrated. I got 2 bags of fluids and meds and saw doctors and had test run. The bill at the end was less than 2k baht. That is just insane. Back in the USA, a trip to the emergency room would be well over 4k USD. This is the place I want to get sick in. Plus, I think I have a date with the nurse.

One of the many consequences of a thin bank account is not so good flying. To save money, I purchased a two stops ticket. Of course in Economy Class. I left DC Saturday noon to fly first to Miami, then to Manaus, and finally arrived in Rio on Sunday morning. The first two flights were in American Airlines, standard quality and no news to report. The flight from Manaus to Rio was through Latam. Even before departing, we started to have troubling news. @azdr0710, who was flying Latam from California, got his flight cancelled because of technical problems. He was supposed to be the first one to arrive to Rio, on Saturday. He ended losing his hotel reservation as he was not arriving until Monday evening. So after my two flights with AA I was a little nervous. My plane landed on time in Manaus, at 3:45 AM. Manaus is a big international airport, but of course there is no A/C, we were lucky it was night and the temperature was pleasant. We got to the immigration lines, and no agents were there. We could see the security staff calling for someone, although they did not seem to be stressed or facing any unusual situation. Meanwhile, mosquitos were feasting on us. After a 15’ wait, one immigration agent showed up, and 5’ later was joined by a second one. No more. Fortunately they were fast and efficient, soon I was in my way to my new boarding gate. I was gladly surprised to find a Latam agent who could speak Spanish and English besides his native Portuguese. Once in the boarding area, I had my first Brazilian orgasmic experience. I think there are not enough photos included with reports here - it's a visually stimulating environment we write about after all. I would not myself publish the name or face of someone I met in Thailand. Better to use a pseudonym, an initial maybe, and a photo that does not show the face. This is an anonymous public forum so its inevitable that subscribers will both react and over react to posts. It can be daunting when people react with anonymous hostility but that's the game we're in here. But to the OP I would say thank you for your report, I see you had permission from the guy to publish his photo so fair enough. Safety in Brazil From discussions with all uber drivers it seems that safety is improving kn Brazil. Many new positions of policemen were created (thousands in Rio), investments were made in weapons and new cars : in the police station close to Sigueira Campos metro station, they have to park the cars all the way to the middle of the street. Many are brand new. In Porto Alegre, the number of armed policemen stopping cars by day and by night is just impressive. Today I saw intervention of police on the beach of Copacabana. They were called and arrived very quickly with weapons visible and armed and went to catch a thief on the beach. Last time I saw action, it was a few years ago : a thief had been caught by people in the street. He was lying on the pavement, firmly maintained on the ground by muscular men. Police was called but never showed up at least during the hour I watched. Of course there is a negative aspect of the situation : since beginning of the year, more than 1200 persons have been shot dead by the police in Rio de Janeiro ! A third of the total homicides in Rio is caused by police (average in the USA : 6%)

Finally made it to Bogota, but it definitely was a tumultuous trip. Having said that, it's totally worth the trouble! Day 1: Extremely early flight. Erawan Museum and Muang Boran are two of Khun Lek Viriyaphan's legacies, the third being the Sanctuary of Truth at Pattaya. For an inexpensive day out take the Chao Phraya Express to Nonthaburi and lunch at a riverside seafood restaurant. Or take the Mahachai Shortline from Wong Wiang Yai to Samut Sakhon. For a night or two away from the crowds, stay at the Bangkok Tree House in Bang Krachao (short taxi ride from BTS Bang Na.) Looking for a peaceful green oasis in the middle of Sathon? visit the Teochew cemetery. Interested in bronze statues? have a wander down Captain Bush Lane. And if you want to visit somewhere really obscure with a view, how about the Chee Chin Khor Moral Up-Lifting for Benefiction Foundation [sic]? You've probably seen it from the river, but few people get close enough on foot to enjoy the view from the top. Or, heading east, the eccentric edifice of Wat Dhammamongkol off Sukhumwit 102?

I do not believe the 2% revenues for Rio. If there are 50 customers 1 foreigner already corresponds to 2 % numberwise and I think that foreigners spend more than locals. Taxi from and to Galeao airport I always use Taxi Comun Aerocoop. Uber is sometimes difficult to meet at airport and sometimes more expensive than Aerocoop. With Aerocoop, they give you a receipt at the booth showing how much you are going to Pay. From GIG to center is 63 R$ and 86 R$ to anyplace in Copacabana. The return to GIG is always cheaper than any other taxi or any uber : it is a flat 50 R$ rate from anyplace in Copacabana, Ipanema or even Leblon. They have an application (aerocoop) and whattsapp number to make reservation. They operate 24/7. Very reliable.

While i think they are a better way to "educate" or critisize OP especially newbie who didnt know what he posted have unintended consequences, which is by using PM, instead of posting it in public and keep going at it without the poster having responded. There is a frequent contributor here who in person dismisses some member’s off’s or guys-of-interest as “too fat”, etc. So far I think that has pretty much always been met with a rolling of the eyes and a perhaps-awkward chuckle. So, it obviously does happen all the time. Update on Porto Alegre : disappointing ! I went there to meet a friend and had good time with him but both saunas were disappointing. Within 2 days He told us to go to smartfit and buy a $6 day pass to gain access to the gym. There is a kiosk at the front door of the gym and all we needed to do was use our credit card and we could workout. If you go over the houR they will charge you extra but we didnt care. The bike ride was VERY NICE and we had a shit load of fun. We rode the bikes in front of sugarloaf mountain. The views were breathtaking. We stopped along the way and took pictures. I'm so happy we decided to do the bike ride because we saw so many interesting parts of Rio that we probably would have never seen because we are always in uber speeding past these various sites. Along the bike route were beautiful greenery, picturesque views of the mountains and beautiful water. We sat on the tram and rode through downtown Rio taking in all the sites. We jumped off one train line and got on another to see as much as we could. The tram is the most inexpensive, relaxing way to see downtown Rio for about $10US pp. The tram takes you through business loops, residential neighborhoods and other areas of interest. There are about 3 or 4 train lines so make sure you get there around 11 in the morning if you want to get a full day of exploring In. The tram ride is amazing. You can get on and off if you like. Just dont lose your card or you will have to buy another. If you need to exchange money in copacabana go to BLAME IT ON RIO travel. The owner is Bobby. Hes an ex-pat from Florida. Bobby is so sweet. He opened a thriving business in Rio that does money exchange, countless tours and he even has a laundry mat to wash clothes. He actually gives the best exchange rates in copacabana.
