  1. Once in a while I check a website called bangkokeyes.com to see the latest nightlife news. The August 2019 edition has a few snippets about Chill Out Boy Bar in Patpong 1 being closed with a photo. It also mentions Bangkok Massage moving from Soi Twilight to Patpong 2 (with photo), and this - "The newly relocated (from Soi Twilight 2 months ago) Hotmale Bar Beer is in the process of renaming themselves the Midnite. Located next to Pinocchios. We'll attempt to get some comprehensive pics next issue.... " If you've never visited bangkokeyes, take a look. It's predominantly aimed at the straight nightlife venues, but they don't discriminate. Their archives are extensive, and there are many old photos taken on Soi Twilight showing the lighted signs of the bars that were there. If you scroll to the bottom of the page, the archived page from 01 JUN 2019 has a whole article dedicated to Gay Patpong and Soi Twilight. I am copying a couple photos from their website here. I hope I'm not violating any rules in doing so. These photos shown here are the property of Bangkok Eyes, not my own. This last photo is a map of Patpong showing the gay businesses. The lavender colored ones are listed as gay in their website as of April 2019. I think by posting this here, it will boost the readership for the Bangkok Eyes website.

  2. Day 3 Headed to Senso! Walking along the corridor pavement outside Senso is always filled with excitement. Cuz its just so open, people in front of you/behind/opposite the road can see you going into Senso ha, although they probably not care less but im always so consious about it that i'll always always overshoot Senso, then backtrack again and enter lol.' Senso opposite of Arena, is more refined, somewhat younger cleaner muscular guys. Place is cleaner/classier as well. Rooms more expensive, 1000 baht for 1 hour room with minimum tip of 1200 baht for 1 hour. To me everything is all about the boy, no matter the room/ambience etc. But yea it's nice to see the hot guys in a well lit decorated mini bar/gym kind of place. There were about 10 guys, muscular and shirtless, evident from their recent gymming. I chose my regular guy Tim ( his pic is on the senso website) - a handsome, lean, quiet guy, but delivers an awesome massage and sensual experience. His massage is one of the best I feel in terms of technique and strength, I do walk away feeling massaged properly with knots gone and relaxed. Not only that, he does this sensual thing, my fav part is when his whole body is pressed against your back, his hands interlocked with your hands, and you can feel him breathing deeply down your neck, nibbling ur neck/ears, and his tool hard against your lower back, and his oiled up bod sliding up and down ur back - i guess this is the standard body to body massage? but it was hott.. sensual kissing with tongue and I came pretty soon , and ended up cuddling for a good while before showering. He is a quiet guy, dosent ask all the qns like what most massage boys do - " where u from, how long u in bangkok etc", but he gives a solid massage and everything else - well recommended. After resting and pondering what my next adventure will be, I decided to just check rentmen and for the first time I booked someone from there ha.. This thai/phillipino guy who's ID is Gorillasian lol.. honestly it was one of the best sex i've ever had, guess it comes with the price tag, but really, I guess most of them are all professionals. It was hott hott.. The guy was handsome, muscular, great bod, great smell ( he walked from the BTS to my hotel and was mildly sweaty ha i love it), great attitude and romantically dominant. made out a lot, groped, licked him everywhere, sucking. I guess the attraction of finding someone online is how convenient it is. No need to go to a bar to find someone u want, fighting with other bar goers to quickly off ur boy before they do, no need to walk under the sun to a massage place heh. The only thing is that i've had experiences finding someone on Jack'd who dosen't look like their pics ( happened twice before, while ultimately they still looked decent and I wouldn't have minded going thru with it, it was nothing like their hott hott model pics online). But on rentmen, there's this "gold " member escort thing, i guess it means that they are certified that their pics are real or something, and I thought this guy was kinda legit based on the reviews so I just went for it heh.. Headed to dreamboys! There were 2 seperate bars - dreamboys and dreamboys paradiso, apparently 1 starts at 10pm and the other at 10:30pm, so i guess the performers will just repeat the show at the former and then head to the other. It seemed a bit messy, like boys and performers were walking through the bar among the bar goers , in the middle of performances to go to the backroom to get prepared or something. I didn't really like the big pillar in the middle because you wouldn't be able to see half of the stage, unless sitting right smack in the middle. Few boys, maybe ~ 15, although it was a thursday but thought there would be more. Performances largely the same as at the old soi twilight bar, but because of the new stage, more limited in terms of the dance routines, I thought overall less impressive than before, largely because of the pillar and lack of space. There was a new F-show though, a guy F-ing a lady boy at the end, and they will walk throughout the bar to get tips ha.. Don't really know how I feel about it, i'm more of a conservative jock F jock kind of person, would have been hotter if it wasnt a lady boy haha but thats just my preference >.< Overall I think dreamboy is still a decent place and bar, for new comers or those that hasnt been to the old one. But as someone who's been to the soi twilight dreamboys many times before, the current set up is not as impressive. Oh and of course I chose a guy - No.100. A cute thai gay guy with handsome face and good body, nice arms, nice tattoo on the chest - a boyish kind of guy. Had a good time back in the hotel kissing, sucking, 69-ing, groping him and all sorts of debauchary heh =)

    Silicone Dick?

About 6-7 years ago I got to talking with a guy at the adjacent table at Telephone. He was in his early 30's, well-built and his English wasn't bad. He brought his drink over to my table and discussed the usual things for about 20 minutes. When I invited him back to the hotel, he said, "I not big", inclining his head to his crotch. "No problem," I told him because that has never been a deal beaker with me. I paid both tabs and we walked off. When he stripped to shower, it became clear that he had what is best described as a micropenis. It seemed so out of proportion to his otherwise fine body. It did turn into a bit of a grower (finger size) and we proceeded to have a good time together. As he was preparing to leave, I reached in my pocket but he said "no, you buy drinks." I then asked if he had eaten and he said no so I took him for a good meal and some more beers. The atmosphere was very relaxed. We were both clearly enjoying the evening. Still gave him more than ample taxi money when we parted and continue to have fond memories. I'd do it again in a heart beat. All told, we made each other feel a little bit better about ourselves.

    The Plain of Jars

From News Corp Australia The jars are spread across the plains and forests of the Laos' mountainous northern regions. Pictured area collection of the jars in a forest. Picture: ANUSource:Supplied The mysterious ‘Plain of Jars’ in Laos has long been a source of fascination to archaeologists and a site for tourists to visit. Now, experts have revealed more of the site’s grisly secrets. The stone jars, which are up to 10-feet tall, dot the landscape in Xieng Khouang Province in central Laos. There are more than 2,100 of the tubular megalithic jars in the area, according to UNESCO, which has designated the ‘Plain of Jars’ a World Heritage site. The strange megalithic structures were first explored in the 1930s, although only limited research has been done since then, according to experts writing in the journal Antiquity. While it is known that the jars were used for “mortuary activity,” relatively little is known about the specifics of the human remains placed in the jars. A 2016 excavation of an area known as “site 1” containing nearly 400 jars, however, has shed new light on the use of mysterious structures. The research reveals “a range of mortuary practices, high rates of infant and child mortality, and new evidence dating these interments to the 9th to 13th centuries AD,” experts write, in the latest issue of the journal Antiquity. Researchers found that over 60 per cent of the “mortuary population” at site 1 was less than 15 years of age, and almost half of those died at the fetal stage or in early infancy. The high infant and fetal mortality noted at site 1 indicate that ill health and/or malnutrition was an issue for the local population, the researchers write. While the remains of 18 individuals were found during a limited excavation of site 1, scientists from the Australian National University, the University of Melbourne, James Cook University, the University of Otago and the Laotian Department of Heritage say that thousands more may be interred there. 5. Hey guys, so I've been to bangkok several times since my virgin trip in 2014, but it's always refreshing to visit again and write posts when im resting in my hotel in between breaks heh.. Day 1 Okay bad day, so apparently flights landing in Bangkok at prime time of about 11-12pm costs $150+ more than landing at 7pm, but because my hotel is about $100 /night, I decided to book a flight a day earlier, landing at bad timing of 7pm ( i still save money even though i have to stay an extra night), and thought I may have an extra night of debauchary. But I had a bad headache on Day 1 and spent it sleeping it off in my hotel room boo =( Day 2 Off i headed to Arena in the afternoon. Took a 5-10 min walk from my hotel at Le Meridien Hotel ( i love this hotel and have been using it since forever. location is good right smack in surawong, no problems with bringing boys in, nice room, i guess it may be a bit pricey but I hardly go on holidays so I don't care ha ). I always get a slight erection enroute the hot sweaty walk in anticipation of what is to come. Once I reach the building Arena is in ( i still have no idea what else this building is for, it seems super abandoned shrugs), I take a lift up to the 3rd floor. The sight of muscular sweaty guys is definitely one to behold. As always, Arena is just a very raw crude sweaty " dirty" place and I love it! Unlike the smooth/pretty boys/pretty rooms of Prince/Senso, there's just a gym sweaty muscular rawness vibe heh. One hour room for 690 baht for cream massage, i think cheapest is 590baht for oil massage 1 hour, and minimum tip of 1000 baht for 1 hour. The kind of guys here are older muscular buffish guys, not really my ideal kind of guys but I do enjoy sampling variety. I eventually choose this guy called Nots, who I actually had before in 2018 heh. He is a handsome good looking guy, decent body and cute smile. Had a nice naughty massage with lots of kissing, nipple play, sucking, groping heh. After I came, we cuddled abit and as there was still time he gave me a " thai massage" as what he called it, contorting my body in various angles ouch but very satisfying when there was the " crack " sound ha. Headed back to the hotel to rest abit and went to Jupiter! Now i used to only go to dreamboys but since my recent trips I find myself at Jupiter more. the guys here are just much more my type. The young muscular handsome jocks kind heh, also less ladyboy shows, less outright parading of just dicks in your face, I prefer the shows and boys here at Jupiter. 400 baht for entrance and drinks. Large selection of boys. And while most were wearing a singlet or shirt, a lot were still shirtless yums. Quite a few guys were my type, No.44, No. 59 ( Ok more on him later), and the guy I offed ( can't remember the number =( either 34 or 43? ) So i offed one of the dancers who appears often in the dance routines, wearing sunglasses, using the chains to jump around heh. He was hot hot. Handsome face, good body, nice arms, nice abs noms. Mamasan said he was straight but i don't really care. The things I do and fancy dosen't matter if gay or straight. Barfine of 500 baht, and I took him back to my hotel heh. Funny, cuz halfway while walking back and chatting, he asked " you don't like women right", in my mind im like " oh boy why do you think we are heading back to my hotel now handsome". I asked if he is straight/gay/like men/women and he said " men men" shrugs. Had a good make out /groping/sucking session/ hot kisser, nice arms and body to grope and touch. He came on my chest and we made out and kissed till I came >.< ok so back to No. 59. I had my eye on him since the beginning I entered. He is handsome, looks like a bad boy kind , but not the gangster kind. The kind that will take you out on romantic date but dominate you in bed. I usually like to look around and take my time before deciding on a off, usually only decide mid to late show. And urgh some female already took him for drinks. So im like okay maybe they wont off him and he'll go back on stage later. But no! they offed him boo.. So yea thats how I ended up with 34/43. But no story not over. Basically No. 59 looks like my ex haha ( like not thai boy ex, my actual real life ex boyfriend a few years ago). He's a gym instructor so yea that kind of bad boy look guy. oh yea back to the story, cuz on Day 4 of my trip, I was back in jupiter and bumped into No.59 ( BUDDEN I ALR OFFED SOMEONE ELSE OMG). Ok i'll post about Day 4 later chronologically heh.. So yea guys, if u see someone u fancy, JUST OFF HIM STRAIGHT AWAY KKZ! no complaints though, i enjoyed 34/43! to be continued... ( btw my style of writing is so that I can come back in future and reminesece heh, so pardon if the writing is abit not that great >.< )

  6. @Badboy81 Hey, I agree with your point. But, could we be a bit less aggressive about "old men" . I agree there are those who simply belong in Thailand where I have been more than 30 times. Yet, we love Rio guys and I , for example, have a boy friend in Santo Domingo who is no tiny Twink - we all have differing tastes - sauna workers in Rio are NOT better than such works in Bangkok - they are different and there does not have to be a qualitative judgement. I know you meant well but "my lovely" choice is not "your ugly" choice.

Haha! Don't worry. I dont go for the reasons I outlined. Being attended by a female bar girl is of no interest to me. The great thing about the Soi Twilight bars was the cameraderie amongst the guys themselves. Then if you bought them drinks they would sit with you and ensure you were having a good time, even though the basic English level might not have been high. I fully realise Twilight is dead and will not come back. My point was Patpong 2 could do with a few gay-staffed beer bars. No idea whether it will or not.

    Silicone Dick?

It is repulsive but if you like boy because of his body/ face / personality my advice will be to soldier on and find some activities you still can share with him. Once I made advances to barker in one of soi Twilight bars and when asked about long time option he said 'yes but no sex" , when asked why he explained that he is a top only but has non functioning silicone cock. Deal did not go through but tipped him nicely for his honesty and in retrospection I thought I should take my own advice above and find something to do with him because I liked him a lot.

  10. Like I said in a previous thread, I may understand the viewing audience a little better than you. Very few here are interested in analyzing, dissecting and digesting the results of a peer-reviewed research dissertation from the Journal of Probability and Statistics. Tone down the pseudo-intellectual rhetoric a bit. You’re blinding us with science, Ms. Sakomoto!

  11. From the Bangkok Post Thanks to the extended MRT Blue Line, one of the most fascinating parts of the capital is now within easy reach Saphan Han is one of Bangkok's oldest surviving bridges. It's not clear when it was first built, but the bridge has been reconstructed at least three times: during the reigns of King Mongkut (Rama IV), King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and King Bhumibol (Rama IX). The one shown in the black and white photo was the version built under King Rama V. Like the world-famous Rialto Bridge in Venice, it was lined with shops. The current concrete version dates from 1962. Most Bangkokians are familiar with the name Saphan Han, but not many have seen the actual bridge, since this part of the canal had been fully covered by a market for decades. The shops were removed a couple of years ago as part of an urban beautification project. The area you'll be reading about in this article is only around 1.2km². Yet, it's packed full of fascinating things to see and do, from Wang Burapha, Saphan Han and Sampheng, to Phahurat, Saphan Phut, Pak Klong Talat and Ban Mo. To help you get a better picture of this section of Bangkok's old town, let's first define its boundaries. Starting in the north, where the new Sam Yot MRT station is located on Charoen Krung Road, the area extends eastwards to Maha Chak Road, and westwards to Klong Khu Muang Doem, the old city moat, with the Chao Phraya River marking the southern boundary. All this is easily walkable from Sam Yot station, so visitors are free to roam the area however they want to. But I'd like to recommend a route that spares you from having to walk back to Sam Yot. rom the station, follow the one-way-traffic on Charoen Krung Road to SAB junction, then turn right onto Chakkrawat Road. Wat Chai Chana Songkhram, Wat Chakkrawat and Chao Krom Poe, a 123-year-old herbal medicine dispensary, are just down the street. Between the two temples, where Yaowarat Road intersects Chakkrawat Road, lies the century-old Luean Rit community, which is undergoing major restoration. Once the project is completed, the area will be a new attraction in an already interesting corner of the city. But for the time being, Luean Rit is sealed and off-limits to the public. Incidentally, at the time of writing, on Google Maps, Street View depicts Luean Rit as it now is, surrounded by tall metal walls. However, as you move through the entrance to the restoration site, Street View shows lively scenes from before the residents moved out. It's like suddenly being transported back in time. Very cool. I recommend trying it before Google updates it. Back to our actual tour, from Wat Chakkrawat, cross to the other side of the street and take Hua Met lane, part of Sampheng wholesale district, to Klong Ong Ang and Phahurat. Along the way, be adventurous and explore all the alleyways. You might find some delightful surprises, as I did. When I see that you have made a post where you have vigorously pushed back on the oft-repeated physical stereotypes of black and brown men in Latin America / South America having much bigger dicks, and being more sexually virile and passionate than others, then I will listen to a word you spew about needless physical characterizations and harmful stereotypes.

  13. In Grindr or Scruff, at least in Rio, there is an increasing number of guys who claim to like "maduros" or "coroas"or "50 +" ie older gentlemen. During my first trips to Rio, back 10 years ago, these ads were very rare. They are now common and are basically of 4 types : - the garotos de programa who are identified as such in the ad - the garotos who are in fact garotos de programa but who do not identify themselves as GP and try to find an older gentlemen who will think that he is not a guy next door and not a GP - the garotos really liking older gentlemen, who are of course a very small minority. They are not expecting anything else than finding a boyfriend or starting a relationship with someone older. They are not looking for money. Since my first travel, I met around 15 of these boys and am still in contact with a few of them, even meeting some of them, for dinner or more, when I am in Brazil - the crooks. This is a new category which seems to be growing and I know that there is a gang of these boys operating in Rio and Sao Paulo. They will meet you and then blackmail you, rob you and put pressure on you to get money. Below are some of the precautions I take to try to identify the boys who genuinely like older gentlemen : - I make it very clear that I am not looking for a GP and I am not prepared to pay for sex (normally the guys from first 2 categories above stop chatting) - I make it clear that I am not (only) looking for sex but want to have discussion on subjects such as politics, travels, languages, art, music, ... - I try to use internet sites which are specialized in bears (and therefore avoid Grindr or Scruff or be even more careful on these general sites) - I check if they know the places where older gentlemen and younger guys who like them meet together (ie La Cueva in Rio and ABC Bailao in Sao Paulo, or internet sites such as ursosderio, or sauna such as Carioca in Rio or Sauna LeRouge 80 in Sao Paulo) - Some questions raise a red flag, in particular the question "are you alone in Rio ?" or personnal questions coming too early and not naturrally during the exchange (on job, ...) - Some attachments also raise a red flag : a too good looking guy -almost a model -, nudes of open asses or huge dicks sent very early in the exchange, ... - I always meet in a public place first, never in my hotel or apartment. I normally arrive in advance in order to see who is coming, if he is alone, is he looks like the pictures which were sent, etc - I never ever go to a boy's place. It is an unknown environment and you never know whom you are going to meet. In addition, a movie or pictures of your meeting can be done ... I remember the story of this american guy who recently in Rio went with 2 guys he met in the street and with whom he had drinks. He was threatened to be thrown from the window and his head and torso were already out (his shouting made the neighbours call the cops). BTW the 2 guys were working in 117. I saw one of them in 117 a few days after the incident. The other is banned from 117, certainly for other reasons. In addition, it is impossible to know what is going to be

    The Plain of Jars

Me and my partner rented a 4WD in January and drove north towards Phonsavan via the eastern route. We made an overnight stay in a small village along the way. Roads were fairly good, save for a few kilometres with gravel roads due to roadwork. But, with the road full of chicken, cats, dogs, cows, and children we could hardly drive faster than 40 km/h. After Phonsavan and looking at some of the jars, we took the western route via the banana pancake town of Vang Vieng on the return to Vientiane. Here, the road up until it joined highway 13 (Vientiane-Luang Prabang "highway") was surfaced, but it was a long and winding road. We stopped in a small town about 54 km north of Vang Vieng, and spent the night in a local hotel. No English spoken in neither of the small towns. Road 13 is in a dismal state (picture below), and the heavy truck traffic made it worse. I believe this is the main transport route from Vientiane into China. We did it in three days,, two nights, all in all a lovely trip.

  21. Pauleiro, great advice. Thank you. I have met many on the Internet before Grindr and the online apps. I always met with someone and had someone to translate for me if they didn't speak English. I had one guy who I met online and stayed with me for a few months. It was a lucky pick. I think there is a post in the forum with his photo. There are ways to alleviate any risk. Be careful and be smart and that is not just in Brazil, but anywhere. When I was in NYC, I met a guy off of Craig's List who was hot! A very masculine thug (my type). I met him and he was more feminine that my drag queen bf at the time. When I asked him about his masculine stamp, he said, "I am a butch queen" and snapped his fingers. Needless to say, you can't always tell what you are getting online.

  22. Bed bugs as a species are capable of carrying 40+ human pathogens but seem to not easily pass them back to humans. It has been thought HepB would be a likely candidate, but not yet borne out. For Chagas disease the larger kissing bug, its faeces, is the culprit accountable for millions of human infections. However, a second more recent animal-model medical entomology study in New Mexico does corroborate the theoretical potential, as per the Penn findings, for the Chagas pathogen to be transmitted by bedbug faeces. Note, though, the researchers deliberately infected the bedbugs by feeding them the pathogen. The pathogen was then detected in their waste. Bedbugs in the natural setting would need to be first infected by feeding on an infected (eg, human) host. They do not infect one another, so it could be quite isolated. They would also need to mimic the characteristic habit of kissing bugs, immediately shitting where they eat so that it mixes into the feeding site wound. Since kissing bugs are the true risk factor and the source of human-to-bedbug potential followed by theoretical reverse transmission, it seems that insect control should prioritize kissing bugs, so named because they gravitate to the face.

  29. It really is that simple. No matter what the subject, internet forums are fiefdoms. Each has its own leader. Each has its own rules. The owners and mods get to pretend they're the handsome stanchions who once guarded the entrance to Studio 54. Hasn't everyone seen the photo of Daddy he once stupidly posted? Imagining him with that bulbous, pregnant gut as a Studio 54 bouncer is really funny. When you analyze the participation number of that forum, you see how small the group of contributors is. Aren't they due for another meltdown? Someone wake me when the fat lady sings.

  32. From the Bangkok Post No water for farms from Aug 24 as reservoir dries up The Lam Sae reservoir, the main source of water in Khon Buri district of Nakhon Ratchasima, is drying up. (Photo by Prasit Tangprasert) NAKHON RATCHASIMA: Irrigation authorities will stop supplying water to farms in irrigated areas from Aug 24 as the Lam Sae reservoir in Khon Buri district is just 21% full and starting to dry up. District chief Wichit Kitwirat and Somsak Thaploka, director of the Lam Sae operation and maintenance project, met on Saturday with representatives of local residents in irrigated areas in Khon Buri district to discuss the challenges facing the district. The amount of water at Lam Sae reservoir now stands at 60 million cubic metres, or 21% of its storage capacity of 275 million cu/m. The reservoir normally supplies more than one million cu/m a day to households, industrial operators and farms. Mr Somsak said officials had earlier predicted that rainfall would be less than 30% of the average during the rainy season. However, the volume of rainfall so far this year has been 70% below average, he added. Officials said it was thus necessary to stop supplying water to the agricultural sector, starting from Aug 24, until conditions returned to normal, he said. 33. Then you shouldn't go and don't let anyone make you go. Some people, however, might find it nice to sit at a beer bar across from Dreamboys and Lucky and BKK Massage (and right near the entrance to Fresh Boys and Hot Male) and enjoy that view and the various comings and goings, regardless of the gender of the server. Particularly when business is slow the staff from any of those shops might be hanging out on the street and might even come over and chat and flirt as they did back on Soi Twilight. Again - for some people - but not everyone - it's an option to keep in mind.

There is a way to possibly speed up the eventual conversion and I credit DivineMadman for first mentioning it about six months ago. Pick out of these well-positioned straight bars, sit down and order your drink. When a lady waitress lingers in search of business, politely tell her you're watching the action across the soi. Give her nice tip and she'll leave you alone. She certainly prefers a gay customer to no customer. Do this once and the staff will recognize you when you come again and leave you be. You get a great view and they get their tip. If the owners see business on the upswing, they may even take on a cute guy to attend to the new trade.

  35. Of course all of this begs the question: Why do gay men in 2019 America patronize an internet forum that hosts and encourages rabid right wingers while taking the voice away from any progressive person who challenges their maniacal positions in a substantive way? I think Mr. Fawkes & Co. take themselves way too seriously, have a grossly inflated sense of their importance, and need to be put in their place. And that is not out of bitterness - it is a reasoned response to a crazy anti-gay parasite who claims to be doing our community a service.

  36. I have to use my decoder ring, but you’re basically saying here (in your own purposefully muddled and pretentious way) the very same thing that the travel blogger that @badboy posted said here, but in simple English: https://www.fluentin3months.com/theft/ Most, but not all, incidents of travelers’ crime and crimes of opportunity could be prevented by the targeted victims with some extra planning, precaution and awareness on the targeted victim’s part. Almost every one of these crimes can be traced back to victim error. They ain’t called “crimes of opportunity” for nothin’!

  38. We may or may not be referring to the same garoto robbery. The one I’m referring to occurred in May, and was on Candido Mendes. This garoto is particularly flashy and I believe he does have a motorcycle, so he probably was on his way to the bike when it occurred. Either way, you reveal that at least 3 garoto robberies occurred upon leaving 117 this year — and thanks for this info. And yes, this very well could and probably does happen at 202 (which practically sits at the bottom of a favela), and the other saunas. Yes, quite a few area locals know that cash money is flowing in and out of the saunas. I will add that although, yes, there are plenty of things one can do to reduce his or her risk of being a target for or a victim of crime —- the percentage of risk will never be zero, and sometimes shit just happens. And face it, some people just have bigger targets on their backs in certain areas. An older white man shaped like the Pillsbury Doughboy dressed in an Izod shirt and plaid shorts with Ray-Ban shades and a backback in Copacabana is going to be a much bigger, much easier target than a youthful looking brown-skinned black man built like a running back, even if that black man has a decent watch and a smartphone! Conversely, in the American South or Midwest, that very same black man would most likely be stopped by the police or reported by a suspicious white resident as a crime suspect, and his life and liberty could be in danger.

  39. Oh no...another thread about crime and muggings in Rio...while the homicide rate decreased of a 18% YoY. I'm gonna repeat myself ...besides people getting robbed 392 times a week...STOP PUTTING A HUGE TARGET ON YOUR BACK, acting like a tourist, or doing stupid things like acting as a rich person (brazilian or not) while you're in areas at risk. If you don't do stupid things you'll not get mugged. The only time I got assaulted was i guess 3 years ago, while sitting on Copacabana's beach at night...I deserved it as a lesson. This is not something valid only in Rio or Brazil (where the crisis is still hitting hard)....it's still valid in every big city, with some rare and extreme exceptions. But i want to spend a couple of words about 117's place....Rua Candido Mendes outside 117 is not dangerous until you don't pass the Swiss consulate which is 4 or 5 buildings upwards from 117. The route between 117 and the metro is safe even at night, until you walk staying close to the buildings. The robberies and the muggings which occurred to the garotos on the last times occurred in Rua da Gloria, on the road side which faces towards Flamengo; and in Rua Hermenegildo de Barros, which is the road above 117, where Ubers usually do a U-turn and where many garotos park their cars and motorbikes. True, these guys are complaining, but ask them why they think they got robbed and they'll all tall you they did a stupid thing. One was walking on the road side of Rua da Gloria and got stopped by two armed guys on a motorbike, while wearing a huge golden necklace and walking with his iphone on his hands wearing earplugs. Another one was having a Facetime call while walking in the night. Another one was counting the bills at the corner... Another one (which is one of the former) got beaten down because he tried himself to beatdown the assaulters. Too bad it was a 3 vs 1. Got lucky they didn't have a knife or a gun. Don't think that the thieves don't know what's going on in saunas (can be 117, 202, Lagoa....and so on) and how much money is coming in and out from it. Last week I was forced to interrupt a brief holiday in Europe and to come back to Sao Paulo, because thieves incredibly broke into my apartment (and 2 more on the same building). Curiously the same thing happened to a friend of me in NYC at the beginning of July and 2 building workers, got injured too. Around 8 years ago I was sitting "alone" waiting for a late night bus in Dublin and playing with my mobile phobe...which got stolen from a young kid. Oh and then there's a friend of a friend of me in the UK, which got seriously injured by acid attacks. (and for some reasons....i feel like it's easier to die in a big EU city due to a terrorist attack than to die in Brazil due to an assault.) The short version? Act as a local, don't do stupid things and in the case that shit happens, don't do the Rambo.

  41. Given proof of the poster's double reporting of the same crime (over a five months span) leaves little incentive to believe anything the poster writes in the future or anything the poster has written in the past in these forums. In addition to double reporting of the same crime more than once (plus claiming two additional robberies in February of this year), the poster bragged about having lived in Brazil for ten years and knowing the local language. Big deal! Many of us know the language and many of us have visited Brazil over many years. The poster's boasting about his ten-year residency and boasting of a language proficiency leaves the impression the poster believes his knowledge is superior to any other long-term visitor to Brazil. I think credibility of the poster is non existent.

  42. So you also reported two identical muggings 5-6 months apart? It is important to track one's own stories. When calling someone out, it is sometimes customary to use a little sarcasm. And what, exactly, is the concrete advice that ihpguy provided? I glean two things: turn over your "fake watch", otherwise why wear one?; a backpack can be of interest to a pivete (which by the way in Bahia could be slang or colloquial for "buddy"). There have been ample suggestions here over the years for sensible vigilance and for mitigating the likelihood of robbery damage. Otherwise, he seems to suggest that his unique past experiences were predictive of breaking news that is repeated and imported here over the years. Methinks some hyperbole or confabulation was drawn on for effect in that regard. A single representation of a credible incident goes further than making like an amoeba en split. He is grousing about not heeding his warnings, but who exactly reported here an incident that reflected they somehow dismissed his testimonials? Generally, message board contributors have shared their own or hearsay bad experiences, put the stats in context globally, or reported being spared a mugging so far.

  43. Possibly, but none of this explains how the exact same crime with exact same circumstances, at the same location at the same time of day, the exact same items taken, the same kind of perpetrators, same witnesses, and the same taxi called to take him to the same hospital not nearby, happened to the same poster twice —- once on September 30 and the other in February of the next year. Because in his own words, this is what ihpguy said happened in his own posts. He has even doubled down on it, in righteous indignation. Anyone can read the two posts and see that. Can you explain away such odd, exact coincidences?

  44. T b, @ihpguy? I reviewed your previous posts from Oct 2018 on safety, they're not 3 months back, and you described an assault virtually identical to the one you just referenced from Feb 2019. After all, you mentioned your previous attempts to warn message board readers. Therefore, forgive me for being a tad incredulous. Assaults in general are believable, but did H Copa d'OR miss Dx of a concussion or something? In addition, might there be some particular aspect about you or the crimes context that make you more vulnerable to attacks?

  45. This topic comes up repeatedly. Maybe it serves as a good reminder to be observant and careful in Rio. The only way to be sure that you will not get robbed in Rio is to stay home. iphguy is an astute resident there, and if he can get robbed three times in one month, it serves to remind us to observe the precautions mentioned here repeatedly, and then still be prepared for danger. It's a risk of visiting Rio.

  46. And my point is made. You were mugged in Rio / Brazil. Yet you continue to return to Rio / Brazil, and not only once, but numerous times since. We are ALL well aware of the risks of crime in Rio / Brazil. And if we are not, we very well already should be (we have the Google). Yet, in spite of knowing the risks of being targeted for crime or violence, we STILL return. Personal risk / reward assessments are a motherfucker. Signed, Not An Apologista But A Realista

  47. Apologistas for Rio de Janeiro crime, go f_ _ k yourselves. #1) I have lived here ten years. #2) I was assaulted RECENTLY, February 2019 on the sidewalk in front of the beach in Ipanema at about 2pm on a Sunday afternoon. Directly in front of Posto 10. I speak fluent Portuguese. I told the pivette I had nothing for him, as I changed from my tennis shoes to chinos. #3) No one came to help or chase the pivette #4) thenowner of the quiosque called me an ambulance, the police and the firefighters. For 20-30 minutes, no one came to help a tourist, and I heard the owner talking on his phone. He gave me two bags of ice. After the bleeding to my eyebrow reduced, I grabbed myself a taxi to Copa D'or in Copacabana, where I received three stitches. #5) Apologistas for the dangers that can take place in Rio de Janeiro, just stop. If it can happen on a Sunday afternoon, near the Ave. Vieira Souto at 2pm in front of a lifeguard station, in can happen anywhere. #6) The pivette got nothing from me, except a free escape, no one went after him, no authority ever showed, I took it upon myself to arrange my own care. #7) So to the apologistas.....stop already.

  49. Don’t feel it’s just gringos (although gringos are certainly a bigger target). A brown-skinned muscled garoto I know Well was beaten, mugged and robbed leaving 117 a few months ago. His beaten face looked like Rocky at the end of the fight in the first movie in the photo he sent me.

  50. Boys playing on their phones whilst in bed with you - I definitely don’t like this. One night after sex I was ready for sleep - it was about 1 am. I always wake up around the same time as if I was back home - that is between 7 and 7.30, so I needed to get off to sleep. Initially it was 90% dark with only a little light from the bathroom door slightly ajar. Suddenly there was glare from his phone and when I looked over he was playing a game - I think candy crush. When I protested he was offended and said it was too early for him to sleep. The night finished with me telling him to go which he did. You gave to realise they live nocturnal lives and their body clocks reflect this causing problems like the one I describe.
