    Carnival 2019

I am here in Rio now and Carnival is over tonight. As a USA friend who lives here said--Carnival is the best and worst of Rio--and I tend to agree having been here for four Carnivals. On the good side the city is generally in a festive mood with street parties everywhere and many people wearing costumes that are amazing or some just simple and fun. There are lots of hot guys in gender bending costumes that adds to the eye candy. The saunas have been full of guys and the party is full on there! The Sambadrome where the floats that make Carnival so famous is really an incredible spectacle that I never get tired of. There is a gay party on Friday night of Carnival that gives you front row seats and open bar with admission called Candybox. You can buy tickets online a few months before. There were heavy rains earlier in Carnival this year but it didn't stop the party. One final good note---city services and trash collection seemed to be pretty organized and cleaned up effeciently after the big events--unlike a previous year I attended when they chose Carnival to go on strike. On the bad side crime and yes violence is rampant. First day of Carnival I saw tear gas fired by police at Ipanema to break up crowds causing people to panic. Another night I was walking on Farme de Amoedo and someone attempted to rob me--but since I had nothing with me they got nothing(this was an aggressive grab in my pocket while I was distracted by three twinks whom I suspect were working with the guy. My cell and most of my money were locked away in my apartment). Two other well traveled friends had their cell phones taken within hours of arriving( one wall pulling it out to call an Uber). Tonight several local guys told me that 5 people were shot in a fight between "gangsters" and police at the beach in Ipanema just down from the gay beach toward the Arpoador--and again more tear gas fired. Since I did not see this incident I cannot confirm it. What i did see tonight was a big fight on Farme de Amoedo that spilled into Gallitos Grill despite metal barriers with several staff joining in and customers fleeing. Police eventually arrived and occupied the restaurant with about 20 officers standing guard. Well for me that was the end of the party. I still have a lot of fun at carnival but it is a crazy time in the city and I really feel it is not the best time for someone's first trip to Rio. Anyway I thought I would share my observations.

  3. It seems like you are picking a good time to travel to Brazil. The Rio Times this morning reports good news for those buying local Brazilian currency. https://riotimesonline.com/brazil-news/rio-business/brazilian-real-slumps-to-lowest-value-against-us-dollar-in-2019/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TheRioTimes+(The+Rio+Times)

  4. I’ll be honest if it’s your first trip to Brazil I would stick to sex in the saunas or love motels. definitely do dinner with a garado but taking it back to your place man may not be the right move. All about your comfort zone.

    Carnival 2019

Thanks for the report. Carnival is always a festive event and interesting to see at least once. However, I tend to find the crime higher in Rio during Carnival and New Year's (Reveillon) and while I like events during both times, I would agree that newcomers should consider avoiding Rio during these times. A brazilian I was with one night during Carnival had a gold chain ripped right off his neck by a younger guy who approached us and was talking with us, who then ran. Rio has many good qualities and I love coming here, but always remain conscience of safety, even if you've been to Rio many times. Tomcal's Top Ten Safety Tips for Brazil in the pinned posts continue to be relevant. The only two things I would add would be to leave your cell phone in the hotel or put it in the front of your pants like the brazilians do and to watch for any unusual activity on your ATM cards after using them in Brazil.

  7. The video is lewd...basically one queen kneeling down and the other peeing on his long hair. My attitude is do your freaky, kinky shit in private. That being said, of course Bolsonaro is using it to try to act like *all* gay people behave this way. Plenty of straight people do lewd things in public during Mardi Gras and it doesn’t cause all straight people to be labelled. I think I wrote once about how certain areas of the Cinelandia theaters smell like urine, and found out later that is the “golden shower” area..

My experiences with TransferWise have, so far at least, been entirely positive. I check the 'middle rate' before making a transfer and they follow it very closely. It's great to know, to the nearest satang, exactly how much should appear in the account the next day. Far better overall rate than my UK Bank, more efficient and less hassle. My UK Bank requires me to fill in all the details each and every time I make a transfer and, as you will realise, this requires great care and checking. With Transferwise, for a repeat transfer all the details are pre-filled, other than the amount.

oh and as for proximity of the arrival gate to immigration: that's a lottery as someone said. You may even get an outside position with bus transfer, which sounds like a pain and time loss, but may actually be a blessing in disguise time-wise, as the bus drops people right at the immigration area, so no more potentially looooong walking.

Most but not all airlines arrange for ground staff to hand out a pass to arriving first and business class passengers as they leave the aircraft which enables the dedicated Priority Lane to be used which has its own dedicated entrance mid way between the two main immigration halls. Thai International (TG) does not permit its business class passengers to use this channel. Instead TG business class passengers should position to the main immigration hall opposite Gate D4 where the left hand lane is dedicated for TG business class passengers who are strictly required to show their boarding pass. Last time I was there, Police were enforcing the no mobile phone rule in the immigration hall which meant passengers could only use this channel if they had paper boarding passes and those with only mobile boarding passes were being turned away and having to join the main economy pass queue which was causing much irritation.

  15. This is a wonderful movie. I did not understand much of the Thai Spirits subplot but the two men were great!! If you want to download it using a Torrent App, it is available on the Gay Torrents web site. You must register to use the site but there is no fee. Just please continue to seed and do not repost with any mention of Gay Torrents.

Yes...but I do not want to get a reputation for handing out gobs of cash. It chafes at me that you get charged extra for labor but what can you do? I would like this presented as a proper “gift” especially since this particular boy with the baby is not an off, merely an occasional drinking companion (for which he does not get tip, only drinks - another story entirely why I am buying gift for a boy I do not off). He and his young girlfriend have some personal circumstances that I feel sorry for. And hopefully if gold, it will not be spent immediately the following day but held on to for real emergencies.

Quickest way to get in and out of Swampy is to learn to travel light. You avoid one of the biggest time eaters if you don’t check bags. It’s not like you have to have a large range of clothes for different occasions. You can wash stuff in your room and it will dry overnight. Or use a laundry. If you find yourself with more possessions on the return trip than you brought in, you can always buy an inexpensive bag and check it on the way home when the stress of gettting downtown isn’t a factor.

    Paying Garatos in Rio

I agree with previous posters, most garotos would not like being paid in a currency other than their own. On a side note, if you live in the U.S. and have an ATM card, it is so easy to get local currency from ATM machines in Brazil. ATM machines are in many places throughout Brazil. You will usually get a better exchange rate than if you exchange at a cambio. Be careful, do not use ATM machines at night or in obscure places. If you find yourself leaving Brazil with too much local currency, you can pay your hotel bill with the excess and your credit card to settle the full amount. Or, you might like Brazil so much, you will want to keep the local currency for your next trip. Boa viagem

Of course you could always just have a carry on which are certainly big enough for this type of trip and not have to wait for bags.

  28. Kev, regarding a boyfriend experience / tour guide, whether in Salvador or Rio, if you have the money, you can find a garoto at the saunas with the time. Regarding the nappy Afro look, there are a few at the saunas like that in Rio, but not many. Actually, even at the Salvador saunas, that look isn’t exactly plentiful. But in statistical terms, maybe 10-15% of the garotos in Rio saunas are darker with kinkier hair, with another 50% in the moreno / brown / mixed category and the rest white / Caucasian in appearance. In Salvador, I estimate the numbers are: 30-35% darker / black, 50-60% moreno/ mixed, and 5% (at the most) white.

BenG1000 - stay with the Thai business class / it's as quick for clearing immigration as the Fast Track greeter service. This is based on having used both. Biggest delay is waiting for luggage... Take a look at the airport map and know your route to the taxi queue. At that hour of the night, taxi is faster than the train and faster than having booked a car and driver as the driver has to be called from the waiting area which adds some minutes. You can speed up the taxi by telling the driver you are in a hurry and you'll pay 500 THB...that's about 30% more than what the metered rate is, but if you include the tolls it's maybe 15% more. This kind of offer will focus the driver and he won't be tempted to use some side roads to minimize the toll.

  30. 6 Things Insecure People Do to Make Themselves Sound Smarter It's all smoke and mirrors. “Many average-intelligence people believe they have superior intellects. They aren't just tricking the people around them--they're tricking themselves, too. 5) The person has an over-the-top vocabulary. Someone using big and obscure words (or jargon) can convince others that they know more than they do by making what they're saying hard to understand.” https://www.inc.com/quora/6-things-insecure-people-do-to-make-themselves-sound-smarter.html

I always take the train if i arrived at bkk, beats any traffic and definitely cheap. But i travel light, with just one luggage, so i dont mind taking train. Its about 40min to phyathai station and few minutes more to silom, with a change of train at siam station. Last trip i managed to take the last train at 11:40pm or so fr bkk, arrived at phyathai at 20min after midnight, hence no bts running anymore. But i just go to the main road, grab one of the passing taxi who accept meter and still able to catch screwboy last shows and off a boy. Another option is to change train at makasan, but its a much longer walk to change station and with luggage, i prefer the first option. Just thought id point out the cheap alternatives

You did not mention which day of the week you arrive. If you arrive on Friday, definitely get a hotel transfer. Many taxi drivers will either be stuck in the city or may decide not to go to the airport due to congestion, leading to a longer taxi queue. The last time I landed on a Friday, I thought to save the US$ 40 a transfer would cost, as that would pay for cover charge and lavish tips for mamasan and wait staff, winning me the favourite customer accolade for the night. 30 minutes in the hot and humid taxi queue later, surrounded by screaming tourists, and I was willing to be Scrooge of the bar.

  36. A tl:dr answer to your question: Most garotos would not want to be paid in any currency other than Brazilian reais. Paying in USD or any other non-Brazilian currency would require them to incur about a 10-15% currency exchange hit at a cambio. The only three incidents I could envision a garoto accepting USD (or any non-Brazilian currency): 1. The garoto is about to travel to another country and can use that currency there; 2. The client agreed to pay an extra 10-20% to cover the currency exchange fees; or 3. The garoto just likes to collect currency from around the globe, like coin collectors or stamp collectors.

    Paying Garatos in Rio

I think that first responders to your willing bttm's triage would prefer reais. Few would know the correct exchange. Why go thru the extra step transacting when it already whittles down the bromance? You would also be paying less dollars than a year ago and much less than 5 yrs ago, notwithstanding pay inflation, for the same service as then because of deflation in real value. They are likely not on top of that, but it means a lower figure on paper. 3 digits sounds and looks better. (Well, 2 for some insistent clients). But money is money. Suum cuique.

  39. Last point on the A340. List price when it was withdrawn from the market was approximately $250 million. According to the website Aircraft Value News, there are so many now out of service that the value of the first model - the A340-300 - is virtually only for scrap. THAI purchased the -500 and -600 models. But according to the same website, the value of an A350-500 has plummeted by 90% over the last 10 years. http://www.aircraftvaluenews.com/aircraft/airbus-a340-300/

I have stopped posting all pics and will soon stop posting as well, as I think I have imparted all the knowledge I have to give, and their are new posters that are more then up to the job! I have noticed in the last year there are newer posters who are knowlegable and write well(Numazu1). One point, gays are often most criticized and attacked by other gays who feel the power of the keyboard warrior! I am always suspicious of someone who has been a member one day and starts critiquing in their first posts(are they really new or just chicken to post under their first name on here to make a point!?), other long term members/posters, imho. anyhow, guys try to enjoy what information this forum can provide you. and if you are in Brazil or Mexico and see me say Hi! 1

  43. Am I the only one that misses the old Boytoy from a few years ago, when Tomcal, Badboy and everyone else posted nudes and discussed their sexcapades. BiLatin was a poster from that era. It seems boytoy is going the way of tumblr where “porn” is now banned. Theoretically, I understand that posting photos of garotos on a totally open board isn’t fair to them. It’s easy as posters to forget we aren’t just posting among friends, and that in fact the whole world can access these forums. Still, this board was a hell of a lot more fun in the old days..
