One thing for sure, it isn't all about money. I have been with Tomcal in Brazil, sat with him at the saunas, and have first-hand observations on how people react to him. He gives off an aura that Suckrates can only dream of- it's warmth! People react to that. He smiles a lot, welcomes everyone. He isn't a vending machine for food or drinks or sex. Life at the saunas day after day might become a grind for the garotos, but tomcal shakes it up. There's always something happening when he is around and the guys react to that. I can't do it, that I will easily admit. But this knocking him for his success is unseemly. Be happy for him. He shares here so much information that the forum would never have become the success it is without him.2 points -
Depends on how you deal with them.... Are you "dating" them? Connecting for sex? Trying to develop a friendship... Those are all variables to take into account2 points

I had talented friends who urged me on. I possessed a strong creative streak. My fashion and costumes could be outrageous, one outdoing the next. Viewers could never predict what a transformation might look like. And then it always shocked. The fever started with the Halloween Parade, when the route went through the small streets of the Village. Magical times. At a young, pretty age, that parade left impact. The swarm of photographers and applause followed you everywhere. Then it was pageant events with friends, hanging with Dana Douglas, Tandy Andrews, and Chilli Pepper, to name a few favorites. Then it was House Balls. Then it was private cross-dressing parties that catered to men who enjoyed that fetish. Then it was the Susanne Bartsch parties. I vaguely remember winning an award soon after my X kicked in. My drag was rich, Krystle Carrington rich, but young and fun. I had a drag closet that smelled like the perfume counter at Bergdorf's. I eventually sold everything on eBay, including my $3000 wigs. Haven't done drag in over 20 years. No interest. That chapter is closed. No regrets. Had a ton of fun.2 points -
I think there is more to it than that... ...many hiring guys in NYC had way more scoots to offer than I did. But the strip-club kids who liked me I think found me funny, weird, not (too much! ) a creep, interesting over lunch the next day...so went home with me. (Even showed up uninvited in the dark of night, as heretofore described.) @Tomcal is very obviously that way with his guys, many times multiplied!2 points

I have no doubt that he has an amazing personality and guys are drawn to him, especially after traveling to Brazil for other 20 years I think the point that was made by the other guy is that money talks... Its cool to fantasize the sauna scene and the hot boys in Rio for loving us (any of the guys who actually travel to Rio) for our looks or bodies or personalities but it definitely boils down to MONEY...then how you treat somebody If you know that you will get guaranteed money on a bi monthly or quarterly basis, you will keep ties with that person especially IF you enjoy their company... You can disagree with somebodies views without it being an argument or a battle of balls... ***I like reading some of the views that guys post on here on how they deal with guys and how the guys deal with them... Unless the relationship is monogamous and you retired the sex worker, this aint Pretty Woman... Again, not sure WHY I always feel the need to say again in regard to commenting on something said about Tomcal (probably because I don't want shit with his Tomhive) I am not taking anything away from him but lets play a game Tomcal goes broke (knocked on wood that does not happen) he changes how he travels to Rio or where he stays or how he treats the guys who regularly spend his trips with him...(how generous he is able to be) Im sure things would change JUST like that really good looking girl or guy that used to get stares all over the place that gained a ton of weight or that ex ball player that used to be the shit when they were playing and since retiring, are suddenly a nobody... That being said, Good for him for being able to do what he can... If you want to be able to have 4 guys stay with you when you travel to Rio, he is your man on info and pointers...1 point -

Dealing with garotos can actually be HARDER than it seems, especially MULTIPLE garotos at a time. There is definitely a learning CURVE involved. Someone going to Rio for the first time would NOT necessarily be able to pull off what tomcal does lol.1 point -

I disagree. Obsessing over others’ motives can ruin your life. Regarding the above instance, if the boys are there with Tomcal (or any of us, for that matter) because they like his money, his house, or his winning personality.... why does it matter? Everyone is getting exactly what they want (unless it’s romantic, storybook, true love — then sorry, you’re out of luck and if that’s what you seek, the WTF are you doing on this website? Might I suggest Match.com instead?). Tom seems to be living his best authentic life and has the financial means to make it happen. The boys he is with seem to be getting paid in some agreed-upon form or fashion AND enjoying themselves along the way. I don’t want to speak for him, but Tom really doesn’t seem to be the type (unlike a few others on this board, perhaps even the poster I am responding to, based on his above posts) that deluded himself into thinking that these guys would be hanging with him if he weren’t a good material provider — great company or not. He seems more like the “it is what is is / que sera, sera / live and let live” / I-Ching philosophy type that accepts the arrangements for what they are — and this is probably why he seems to enjoy himself so much and get along with so many of the boys so well. That being said, there are probably some people whose personalities are so nasty or caustic that even a well-paid date would cut the date short or give a refund.1 point -

And all I'm sayin is "ya do what ya gotta do" to survive.....Hot young guys in need of money aint gonna waste their time with Older men if there aint a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow... Its pretty much common sense. My post was in response to latbears Idolization of tomcal and putting him on a pedestal as some Messiah who was working magic and living a mystical dream life... And I was pointing out that ANYONE can have that, since it is "bought and paid for".... There's really nothing special about tomcal, although I DO find his life "interesting"... And you can be sure there will always be a boy around to "change his Pampers"....1 point

Sorry, Grandma cant get enough of this "little nugget".... He needs a Gay Showmance, kinda like they did for Frankie Grande. That would be Adorable... So far, he hasnt made a mark as a strong game player, and has been given the dreaded label of "floater" (a guest with no commitment). I hope they keep him around, he is so fun to watch, and appears to be a voice of reason and compassion.1 point

I never went through a drag stage. But, MANY of my friends in NYC were drag queens. So, perhaps I don't have a full chapter. However, they are a very important part of my story. I only dressed in drag one time. I was scared and nervous. I was also hit on more that night than any other time I went to gay bars in NYC.1 point

I haven't seen it yet. Never fully recovered from seeing "Paris is Burning," and a few follow-ups after that. Brings up lots of memories. In my extreme youth, I walked the runway for a specific House. I think the category was Glamour Realness. Deborah Harry and Gianni Versace were judges. I was one of a few White boys who dared to give voguing a go. I wasn't exactly a club-kid, but I knew how to play one for fun. In my early years I thought I wanted to be a dancer. I studied at a prestigious NYC studio that taught Bob Fosse style jazz. I enjoyed it, but I did not fall in love with the life. I lost interest fairly quickly, but that didn't mean I stopped clubbing and enjoying a great dance floor opportunity. Haven't danced in a long time. Some things change as we age.1 point -

An interesting read, whether you’re already familiar with Brazil’s “peculiar” relationship with race or not: “Ever since his “It’s not like I’m black, you know?” comment, Neymar has served as a focal point in Brazil’s cultural reckoning with racism, whitening, identity and public policy.” https://mobile.nytimes.com/2018/06/30/opinion/is-neymar-black-brazil-and-the-painful-relativity-of-race.html?smid=fb-nytimes&smtyp=cur1 point -
Lagoa - Rodolfo is feeling generous
floridarob reacted to mvan1 for a topic
I am impressed that you picked on my sarcasm about Rodolfo being "generous" If a prize existed, such as a Nobel-less prize for being stingy, Rodolfo wins hands down. Rodolfo's advertisement for a R$30 sauna entrance fee is not generous. He is desperate. As many of us know, Monday night at Lagoa is usually slow or terrible. He lowered the entrance rate for that day to encourage people to visit his sauna. Nothing more, nothing less. My first example of Rodolfo's stinginess that I recall occurred several years ago when I and some friends had dinner at a nice restaurant with him. At dinner, Rodolfo ordered things the rest of us did not order or even want including a bottle of expensive wine. You guessed it; when it came time for us to pay the bill, Rodolfo ran out on paying his share of the dinner that was more than 75% solely attributable to things he ordered. Laughably, he was the one who suggested our going to dinner. It was not worthy of our time or effort to attempt have Rodolfo pay his share of the dinner that he suggested. I am confident he knew exactly what he was doing when he pulled off that little scam on us. In your response, you mentioned Edgard - He died several years ago. Edgard's estate, including his 2/3 interest in ownership of Lagoa, is an amusing story for another day -1 point -
There's another offering of the Sunday Hippie Fair on Praça General Osório in Ipanema: a number of artists display and sell their paintings. Although, as previously stated, most of us would not recommend a favela tour, many of the works of art have colorful scenes of favelas, usually with other iconic features of Rio de Janeiro in the background, like the statue of Cristo Redentor on top of Corcovado. The smaller pieces can be rolled up and transported back to the U.S. relatively easily. They make for lovely, inexpensive gifts for friends back in the States or for hanging in your own home.1 point

Too right Paris!! Hence my earlier assertion that Obama is not Black in Brazil. Neymar has been known to OBJECT to being called Black. The Iberian slaveocracy was built on the foundation of Blacks as subhumans just as the northern European versions were. The difference is that the Portuguese and the Spanish provided an escape hatch from the benighted class in the form of an intermediate class, mulatto or mestizo in the Spanish context and Pardo in Brazil. That way, even the higher access to resources that sometimes extended from European parentage could not be used to topple the whole system and threaten the forced labor camps. Americans like WEB DuBois, Booker T. Washington, Frederick Douglass, Thurgood Marshall,, Barack Obama, Doug Wilder, Maynard Jackson would, none of them, have been considered Black in Brazil which may be why Brazil has not ever had such leaders.1 point
