Arrived in Rio from Miami with Avianca. Until last year they used A330 from Bogota to Rio during the night with full flat bed. Perfect. Now they use the new A320 Neo. No longer beds... but OK flight except that the polit did not show up on time... Aerocoop taxi from Airport to Copa. Fare increase from 74 to 82 R$ in bandeira 1 since last December. I have not seen much info on Costa Rica here, so I wrote up a report about a trip I took several years ago. I checked as I was writing, and most of the info still seems to be relevant (places are still in operation, etc.) Prices may have changed, of course. I have visited Costa Rica twice now, but haven’t been since summer 2012. I am excited to return next month. I found Costa Rica to be beautiful and laid back, and a lot of fun. The country’s infrastructure is very basic, with a clear division between the poor/older areas and the newer upscale areas. All of the gay attractions I visited were in the older areas. I stayed in San Jose and in Manuel Antonio and enjoyed both. San Jose The strip club Pucho’s has a very standard formula: At 10:00 PM, the strippers all come out in G-strings and dance for exactly 10 minutes. Afterward, you get 50 minutes of drag queens who are actually pretty good. At 11:00 PM, the boys return, but this time fully nude…then 50 more minutes of drag queens. At midnight, the dancers return, but this time with erections, and they dance for 10 minutes. Many clients approach the stage and sample the merchandise (sometimes even with their mouths). If at any time you decide you want a “private” with one of the dancers, you pay the bartender, and the dancer takes you behind the scenes. I did not go, but it seemed that they simply took clients into the dressing room, where other strippers and drag queens were located. Any of those strippers is available for a fee, but you may have to pay a fee to the bar if they leave before the midnight show. Pucho’s is popular among locals, but not just for the dancers. They have a restaurant and a patio and a dark room attached. This was not immediately apparent, because the door is kept closed between the two parts…you must go through what looks like a door to the outside, but is really a door into the restaurant, cut through the corner of the restaurant, and then exit again onto the patio. The dark room and patio are packed. Many types of guys. Younger, older, nondescript, handsome…truly all types of guys go there. There is a brothel in San Jose called Oasis Erotic Massage. You enter the place, and the proprietor calls all the working guys to the front, and you get to make your choice. There are different price points, and the proprietor explains in Spanish that everything is included including oral, or penetration if you go with the more expensive option (you also get a nicer room). On this next trip, I will also try Planet Romeo. I had a lot of luck simply going to bars and meeting people. Ticos are friendly and approachable, and gay tourists are enough of a novelty to garner some attention just by their presence. Late one night, after exiting Pucho’s and getting into one of the many waiting taxis, the driver asked me if I was looking for a boy, because he knew a place where lots of hustlers hang out--Parque Nacional on Av.1 and Calle 19. He said that any of them would be very happy to do anything I wanted for $20, or they would stay the whole day/night for $40. I had already arranged to meet someone at my hotel for massage and oral ($20), but I took his card and he promised he would take me there the next day. Unfortunately, with the janky cell phone service at that time, I could not reach him the next day, despite trying about 20 times. I got a message each time saying the person you are trying to reach is out of the area or unavailable. I did call a regular taxi and try to drive past the park the next evening, but the driver did not speak English, so rather than explaining what I was doing, I asked him to drive slowly past the park because I was looking for a friend. After one trip around the block, and not seeing any likely candidates, I told him to circle back and I would get out and wait for my friend, and he immediately responded with alarm, “No, no, no. Muy peligroso! (very dangerous)” This was something I encountered several times in San Jose: warnings from the locals to never walk anywhere downtown after dark. Always take a taxi. Even for a trip of one or two blocks. I didn’t spend enough time there to gauge if these warnings were overblown, because I figured it was probably better to be safe than sorry, and I took a taxi everywhere. And one final note on the taxis: three of my taxi drivers let me know very plainly that they would be willing to fuck for a little money, and I got the feeling that several others would have been open to the idea. Manuel Antonio Manuel Antonio has a reputation as a gay destination, but the reasons for that seem to be historical (there used to be a popular nude beach, but it has been shut down because a hotel was built overlooking the beach). There is a gay hotel that I enjoyed very much (Hotel Villa Roca: https://www.villaroca.com/ ), but the area has very little to offer in the way of sex tourism, at least that I could find. It is pretty much a beautiful jungle paradise, with an amazing national forest where I saw sloths, toucans, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, and a beautiful but very poisonous golden eyelash viper (oropel). The tour guide I hired through the desk clerk at my hotel turned out to be a fun and friendly gay bear who came onto me, but he wasn’t really my type, so I passed, but I did enjoy his tour very much. There were two guys in the area offering massage, but it was clear that it was legit/therapeutic massage, and the desk clerk acted completely scandalized when I asked if there were any guys who offered “extra” service. He shouted at me, “NO!” and said there was no way any guys in the area would do such a thing. I got the vibe that the very handsome bartender would have been available for pay. One last note about Manuel Antonio/Villa Roca: After I returned to San Jose, I happened to see one of the owners of Villa Roca at a bar with an attractive, much younger guy. So, if I were to return to Manuel Antonio, I would be more likely to ask the owners of the property about the availability of rentboys, rather than the officious desk clerk. Or maybe hire someone in San Jose and take them along if you want to be sure of companionship.

I was lucky to stay in Colombia in April 2018. I had visited Medellin, Cartagena, Cali, Barranquilla and Pereira, staying in each city for 5-7 days. Colombia is a beautiful county and the people are generally very nice. Grindr works wonders in every city. Following is my brief report, in a logical way of writing per se. First of all, three warnings: 1. Underage problem: In Grindr and on the streets, I had seen some (while not a lot) under age boys contacting gringos. Some of boys would say straight that they are 16 or 17 years old while some pretend to be 18 or 19 years old but without a valid ID. In Medelline, there are quite a few homeless-looking drug-addictive young men selling candies and approaching gringos. They are regulars of Metro Barrio and Park Bolivar and they could be dangerous in many ways, sometimes they getting violent. Better stay away from them and completely ignore them. 3. Policemen in their twenties are very cute and very attractive in Colombia. hmmm, is there a way... or not? **** Medellín: more the abundant men to meet, from Grindr or from the streets (in particular, Metro barrio and park Bolivar). The price of a massage, typically ranges from 50 thousand Colombia pesos to 100 thousand, but it could be as low as 30 thousand (11 dollars). The men are more of twink-type, cute and slim. There are many motels for hourly rent in the center (around Metro barrio and park Bolivar) with a cost between 8000 pesos to 15000. The city of Medellín is quite beautiful, so called a city of eternal-spring. It often rains a lot in late afternoon or at night in April. The living cost of Medellín is very low, a good meal for 10000-20000 pesos and a nice apartment for 100-200 thousand pesos per night. It is generally safe in Medellín but it is advised not to walk in the center at night. **** Cartagena: more the abundant men to meet, mostly from Grindr . The price of a massage, typically ranges from 100 thousand Colombia pesos to 150 thousand. The men of Cartagena are from many other cities such as nearby Barranquilla and Bogota and Medellín. They are usually more muscular than Medellín. There are many motels for hourly rent in the old town (walled city) with a cost between 10000 pesos to 20000. The old town of Cartagena is very charming and has a colonial feel to it. Cartagena is a great place to visit. The old town is also very safe. It is of no problem to walk at night in the old town alone. there are also lots of international tourists in the city. The weather is a bit hot during the day in April, but cool at night with breeze from the ocean. The living cost of Cartagena is higher than Medellín, probably 30-50% higher. **** Barranquilla: abundant men to meet, mostly from Grindr . While Barranquilla is close to Cartagena (only 2 hours of driving), Barranquilla is a lot more conservative than Cartagena. For example, men from Grindr here are more cautious to communicate and tend to cover their faces in the profile photos. It is also a lot harder to find a motel in the city. (There is a motel called "secretos" on Cra. 53# 68-204 in the center, with a hourly price 16000 pesos). The price of a massage, to my surprise, is somewhat higher than Cartagena. Barranquilla is an industrial city and I did not find any place particularly interesting to visit. The living cost of Barranquilla is higher than Medellín. **** Pereira: abundant men to meet, mostly from Grindr. Pereira is a smaller version of Medellín. A Paisa is someone from a region in the northwest of Colombia, including the part of the Andes in Colombia. The main cities of the Paisa region are Medellín, Pereira, Manizales and Armenia. There are quite a few motels in the center around plaza bolivar. The price of a massage is from 100 thousand pesos and 150 thousand. Similar to Medellin, Pereira is also a city of eternal-spring. The surrounding mountains and cafe areas are spectacular and relaxing. The living cost of Pereira is probably 20% less than Medellin. **** Cali: more the abundant men to meet from Grindr. The price of a massage, typically ranges from 100 thousand Colombia pesos to 150 thousand, but once I was quoted at 150 US dollars! It surprised me because it far exceeded the average living cost in Cali. The men in Cali are very attractive, handsome and muscular. There are some motels for hourly rent in the area of San Antonio（for example, there is one called “Diosa Del Amar”）. The city of Cali is beautiful but I didn't find any place particularly interesting to visit. The weather is very nice in April, neither hot or cold. The living cost of Cali I feel is higher than Medellín. I think the people of Cali is the most attractive (twink-ish face with muscular body) in Colombia and Paisa come in a second. But over all, I would rank Medellin 9 out of 10, both Cartagena and Cali 8 out of 10, Pereira 7 out 10 and finally Barranquilla 6 out of 10. Again it surprises me that the cost of play in less touristic cities like Cali and Barranquilla is higher than that of more touristic cities like Cartagena and Medellin. In conclusion, I have had a great time in Colombia during the one-month travel. In particular, all the men I met had been courteous and respectful. I am looking forward to my next visit to Colombia, and my visit to cities of Santa Martha, Leticia (amazon), and Bucaramanga.

Here is some evidence of the quality of guys who are available in San Jose. This guy is currently advertising on craigslist (and these photos are posted publicly on his ad). I agree about aerocoop for a taxi in Rio from the airport. Uber is also an option if you have the international plan or already have a sim card for Brazil (NOTE: you wont find one in the airport) Also I use Citibank or Banco do Brasil ATMs. When I was out I only took what i needed. I have an older cell phone that I use while in brazil. I have a cheaper watch on. I dont carry all my cash or any credit cards in my wallet so that if i do get mugged Im not out all my cash and credit cards. I use one of those security pouches around my neck or belt. I leave my atm and credit cards back in my room with a safe or hidden. Are these pain in the ass moves? Sure but thats big city foreign travel for you.

in 18 years of going to Rio i never had a desire to visit the favelas! i could see them on on the hillsides and that’s as close as i ever wanted to be. But one Friday afternoon during the Pope’s visit a couple years ago, they closed all the access roads in and out of Copa but since i stay in Ipanema it was also a problem. i was going to Meo Mundo so the Taxi driver took me up into the Favela above Ipanema to cross over to get to centro. Once you are in the heart of the favela, you are moving slower then people can walk mostly on 1 car width roads jammed with pedestrians! this was around 5:00 pm. the taxi driver actually told me to sit low in the back seat so i wouldn’t be so noticeable! that was my first and last favela tour and i saw nothing that i would want to see then or now! imho

Usually I will try to find a nice Airbnb apartment. I love to stay in a spacious and well-decorated apartment with local chills and most of the time it is cheaper than a 4-star hotel. Airbnb tips: 1. pay attention to apartments with "private entrance" and read reviews. Often "private entrance" means you have an independent entrance to your apartment for maximal privacy (but not always so); 2. Lots of Colombia apartments locate within a residence building with 24 hour security guards. Be nice to the guards (I often buy them drinks) and it should be OK to bring back guests. the security guard will have to register your visitor's ID which is good for your security. 3. Some apartment may explicitly prohibit local visitors in their listing. read carefully. However, I almost always use short time love motel for encounters. I am a hassle-free kind of guy and I don't like to leave my traces. The good news is that love motels are abundant in most cities and most guys from Grindr know at least one place to go. I had written to a couple of guys on Tuesday (five days ago) in anticipation of an upcoming trip to Costa Rica. They also deleted the "therapeutic services" section from the services menu, where you could often find guys advertising for massage.
