The Mayor Crivela situation? Two ways to look at it. For residents: nothing short of disastrous, and his definitely UNOFFICIAL trip to Europe, aptly mentioned here by fellow posters, is already under public investigation for fraud. The fact that the trip coincided not only with Carnaval, but with two major crises - one natural, the other the entire security apparatus of his city and state - has further decimated his standing. The (only) silver lining: he has proven to be so toxic, in every demographic, and so incompetent, that it will be a long time coming before another evangelical wins a major election in Rio. Anyway, although its a bit harder now than it was before to get a visa, the success rate on application for the american visa for brazilians are higher than 80% now, down from a 97% success rate when the economy was booming.

Hi, pauleiro, if you come up short, it is reasonably simple and completely safe by bus, at least getting there and back. I did it two months ago on my own. The main thing is to have good footwear, as often you have to walk on considerably protruding cobblestone sections. And almost every step you take will involve an up or down change in altitude. I got a tourist map at the bus station and they alerted me the Conceiçao church was closed, but there are other notable ones. A map is essential unless you have an acute sense of direction. Or location tracking and map on your smartphone. For the town itself, a local guide likely best unless a guide in BHz can demonstrate advanced familiarity. The way I always looked it was they each stayed with me for at least 6 months. One of the things that benefits Thais more than anything is a phone and a bike. Just returned last night from a friend's birthday weekend in Barcelona replete with eating and lots of visits to Thermas. We all took different airlines (JFK, EWR) and landed in the early afternoon on Thursday (I tried the new Norwegian airline from EWR- the business class tickets are a good deal as they are only slightly more than the premium economy on the legacy airlines). Checked into the hotel (Mandarin Oriental, located on the edge of the gay district. The hotel is well situated, but the interior is a little dated compared to other MOs; however, the doormen are all tall dark handsome spaniards with beautiful smiles and always willing to lend a helping hand).
