I went together with a friend with a guide to the Rocinha favela. We were only 2 with the guide and spend the whole morning travelling down the favella. The Guide knew everyone and people were rather friendly. A good experience. Explanations were rather amazing particularly about the localization of the the drug dealers. It was my second trip to a favely. First one was with a Brasilian friend in 2012 in a much smaller favela. Lots of armed people with kalachnikov there.2 points

Home Business Rio Loses R$657 Million in Tourism Over 8 Months Due to Violence Business Local Business Rio Loses R$657 Million in Tourism Over 8 Months Due to Violence Restaurants, bars and hotels have registered significant revenue losses and some have been forced to close in the eight first months of the year. By Lise Alves - November 3, 2017 Share on Facebook Tweet on Twitter By Lise Alves, Senior Contributing Reporter RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The city of Rio de Janeiro has lost more than R$657 million of its tourism revenues during the eight first months of the year due to crime and violence, according to a new survey conducted by the National Confederation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC). Couve Flor restaurant closed its doors in September due to the recent escalation of violence in the city, photo internet reproduction. The loss is equivalent to 29 percent of the total loss of the sector’s revenues during the period (R$2,291 billion). The segment of bars and restaurants suffered more than half of the loss (R$332.1 million), according to the survey, with both tourists and residents afraid to go out due to the increasing reports of violent clashes between police and trafficking gangs. The violence also makes it harder for those who live in these communities plagued with the escalating violence to go to work. One of the first and most famous health food venues in Rio, Couve-Flor, closed its Jardim Botanico location restaurant in September. According to owner Jair Pinto, the armed disputes in the Rocinha favela community led to repeated absences of many of his employees who live in the community. “In a single day eleven employees missed work,” Pinto told Globo newspaper. “They could not leave the house because of the shootings.” Another city landmark, Osteria Policarpo, located in Rio’s Humaita neighborhood, closed its doors last month, after 25 years. According to chef and owner Luiz Gennari, the restaurant did not resist the strong economic crisis and the increased violence faced by the city in the past year. “Unfortunately the situation of our country, state and city is very complicated and we will not be able to remain open,” said the restaurant in its social media page. The segments of transportation, travel agencies and car rental companies also suffered losses, totaling R$215.5 million, or 32.6 percent of the total revenues while the segment of hotels and inns registered losses of R$97.7 million, or 14.8 percent of the total revenues during the January-August 2017 period.1 point

Donna Brazile rules!
Latbear4blk reacted to AdamSmith for a topic
She the Man. Hacks review: Donna Brazile lifts lid on Hillary and the Democrats' disaster The former DNC chair’s memoir of election defeat has it all: Russian hackers, campaign drama and a reigniting of bitter internal feuds Twice in the past five presidential elections, the Democrats won the popular vote only to meet defeat in the electoral college. In 2000, a mere 537-vote deficit in Florida and the US supreme court stood between Al Gore and the White House. Sixteen years later, Hillary Clinton garnered a 2.86 million vote plurality, only to see her ambitions dashed in the Rust Belt. Both times, Donna Brazile was there, first as Gore’s campaign manager, then in 2016 as the interim chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC). Brazile most certainly has a story to tell. In Hacks, her new book, she points fingers, names names and self-absolves. Replete with f-bombs, male anatomical references and tales of alcohol consumption, the book is an easy and vivid read, everything one expects in a first-person campaign narrative – except for its detailed discussion of Russia’s hacks, WikiLeaks, and threats to Brazile herself. On that score, the book is down-right alarming. Three titanic egos – Barack, Hillary, and Debbie – had stripped the party to a shell for their own purposes Donna Brazile From the get-go, Brazile bristles with contempt for Robby Mook, the data-driven Clinton campaign manager, and Brandon Davis, Mook’s emissary to the Democratic National Committee (DNC). She is respectfully disapproving of Clinton’s hauteur and tin ear, which she captures with a deft touch, and bathes Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Brazile’s predecessor at the debt-ridden DNC, with acid-laced kindness. Brazile also takes the Obamas to task for standing idly as the Democratic party imploded on their watch. As Brazile tells it, “three titanic egos – Barack, Hillary, and Debbie – had stripped the party to a shell for their own purposes.” Brazile pummels Mook. Mincing no words, she declares: “I want to talk about the arrogance and isolation of the Clinton campaign and the cult of Robby Mook, who felt fresh but turned up stale, in a campaign haunted by ghosts and lacking in enthusiasm, focus, and heart.” In Brazile’s view, campaigns are supposed to be about competence in execution, passion and fun. On this score, Mook was 0-for-3. Worse, Mook and his men sought to put the kibosh on Brazile’s efforts to bolster the DNC and the Democrats, which tack was driven in large measure by sexism but not racism, according to the African-American Brazile. Over a conference call with the Clinton campaign’s high command, Brazile recalls, genital size became the measure of all things. She announced: “This feels like power and control. Gentlemen, let’s just put our dicks on the table and see who’s got the bigger one, because I know that mine is bigger than all of yours.” Interestingly, Huma Abedin, Clinton’s supposed alter-ego, is never present during these dust-ups, giving the impression that she was simply Clinton’s kid-sister and disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner’s ex-wife. Abedin as strategic player? Not so much. After Clinton’s “deplorables” speech at Cipriani Wall Street and her collapse at the 9/11 ceremony in lower Manhattan, Brazile writes that she was forced to take stock of Clinton’s candidacy and assess the possibility of replacing the ticket, a power actually possessed by the DNC. In Brazile’s view, a combination of vice-president Joe Biden and Senator Cory Booker would have been a dream team, particularly in the face of Donald Trump’s appeal to white working-class voters and the Democrats’ dependence on minority turn-out. Brazile also writes that Clinton’s failure to immediately come clean about her bout with pneumonia “fed the impression that Hillary was lying to us”. As to be expected, Brazile goes easy on Brazile. She makes no mention of the DNC spending scarce funds in get-out-the-vote efforts that targeted Chicago (in reliably blue Illinois) and New Orleans (in predictably red Louisiana). She also pushes back hard against accusations that she leaked primary debate questions to the Clinton campaign, even as she was a CNN commentator. Still, Brazile acknowledges that as the result of binding agreements hammered out by Wasserman Schultz, the DNC had become a Clinton campaign subsidiary. Yes, the Bernie Bros really had reason to be angry. The fix was in. Brazile also deals with race, gender, and identity politics. Hacks recounts how turnout among black women dropped from Obama’s presidential bids to Clinton’s run, and discusses incarceration as an issue of particular concern to African American voters. At the same time, Brazile, an adjunct assistant professor, writes of how her students disapproved of identity politics. Sounding awfully like Columbia’s Mark Lilla, Brazile comments that her students thought Clinton spent too much time “trying to appeal to people based on their race, or their gender, or their sexual orientation” and not enough time on the issues. In reality, even with Donald Trump, this is a problem the Democrats must address. Running up the score in Blue America, without an eye toward America’s interior, is a surefire way of making 2020 a rerun of 2000 and 2016. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/nov/05/hacks-review-donna-brazile-hillary-clinton-democrats-donald-trump1 point -

Or maybe there are a lot of people afraid to cross Daddy. Personally judging by some of the feed back and inquires I've received from behind the scenes, no one wants to stick there neck out. It's a sad commentary on a website. I think in the end, people really just don't give a shit. There's no loyalty. There are a handful of people who want to just move on. Pretty sad if you were to ask me. Over the course of a year or so, there have been a half a dozen posters who had been on the site for 10 plus years, decided to move on with their lives. Over a few last meals in FTL, several asked me to tell anyone who asked about their absence, to let them know that they were fine and had just needed some time away. Not one person has ever publically inquired about them... ever. They can ban the man all they want, but the site was a better place when Adam was an active poster there. And so it goes....1 point

Some of you men like to debate "NEEDLESSLY" over an innocent query. Would it be wonderful if the initial subject could be addressed? If there is a varying opinion-- let it be and continue to address without disparagement, ridicule, bickering, bitching, etc.! So I do hope that the next poster will address the issue and NOT what Yunior and Luis have at their websites. The poster's inquiry has been addressed! BTW both guys are on my FB page, Luis more than Yunior! Luis has traveled a lot; I've loved the photos that he's posted of himself at these various places and cities outside of Habana as well as within.1 point -

Adam, while I dont know why you are banned for life, I can only imagine that the reasons are elevated in the Old girls mind... I felt the same way you do, that I was a valued contributor, and didnt deserve the scorn I was getting from her. But once I was on the Old girls radar, i was doomed... She seized every opportunity to take a minor offense and make it into something TOS worthy, and once you get Banned, there is no communicating with admin or even trying to "discuss" the action... It's quite dictatorial.. While I respect Lars and latbear for their altruistic action, I dont think it will end well for them... You know what they about an OLD girl scorned ? I truly understand your Void, I felt it each time I was exiled, and its the reason I went back, to endure even more scrutiny and abuse there.... I miss it when its gone.. (the site, NOT the rule!) But you have always been a guy that makes lemonade out of lemons, so sweety, START SQUEEZING !!!!!1 point

My humble contribution: Growing up, Mom had one of these in the house, or something similar. It was a 700lb monster. One January in 1969, after 7 days of relentless rains, the canyon wall let go and buried half the house and most of the road leading up the hill. The only way out was by a foot trail that was about an eighth of a mile long down a steep embankment that led to the main road. Dozens of people showed up to help us evacuate. After hours of gathering possessions that had survived the landslide and shuttling them down the hill, it was determined that alas the organ could not be moved and would have to be left behind. Mom began crying uncontrollably. We stood around pondering the fate of the organ and trying to console my mother. Out of the crowd of volunteers, an ex marine, 6' 2 and 250lbs if he was an once took charge. He pulled together 12 of the biggest guys in the group, wrapped the organ in moving blankets, then strapped 4 by 4 beams across the top and lashed them down. Three guys on each beam, front and back. To this day I can hear him say, "On the count of three we are going to lift, and then we're going to carry this bitch down the hill"....and he did. Mom had that organ until the day she died at 91.1 point

So is that why you are now HERE ? To try and destroy THIS Forum ? I am just trying to grasp your weird psychology. Why push anybody to that point. IF you dont like the venue or the administration, then just fucking leave. It's pretty childish to play silly BAN ME games... That's kind of vindictive on it's own.... Any of us who have been the victim of Daddy wrath feel some kind of retaliation and since we cant do it "there", do it from somewhere ! That's diff from vindictiveness.1 point

Reading Kevin’s posts reminds me so much of this gay law professor that I had in law school over 20 years ago. He was scrawny, very insecure, geeky, not anything at all to look at, socially inept, and always inappropriately speaking up just to be heard. He thought it made him seem charming, witty and bright, but everyone just thought he was obnoxious. It probably all stemmed from his insecurity about his personal appearance, as he was a real troll.1 point -

You may find other Havana tour guides online, but the likelihood of finding another one online who is also openly gay are slim to none. If you prefer, you can just take your chances when you arrive that you will meet or be introduced to someone who can act as a professional tour guide in Havana and has the necessary relationships.1 point
