I've spent two long weekends there, once with an Argentine boyfriend and once alone. I found the city interesting but dull in terms of nightlife. Society is noticeably more conservative in Santiago than in Buenos Aires or Rio de Janeiro. By this, I mean in terms of gay equality and easy acceptance. I did not encounter any homophobia but I noticed that in our hotel rooms, we always had two beds made up even though I had specified in the reservation that we wanted one kingsize bed. Although we pushed the beds together at night, after housekeeping had been, they were always separated. I gather from Latin American friends that this is quite usual for two men checking into hotels in Chile. I think Valparaiso is charming and well worth a visit. I too would like to visit the Atacama desert but I feel it is too far from the capital to visit unless you have a week in Chile.

In previous posts, you expressed interest in Rio - however, this place is not in Rio. It is in Sao Paulo. The place in very near the main "gay" area not far from Praca da Republica. Since I do not know your likes or dislikes, I will say that I was at this place only once and only at the encouraging of a friend. I stayed long enough to know what going on. There are strip shows, there is entertainment but the place is definitely NOT a sauna. The patrons there are mixed. For example, the younger customers are rather "delicate" or feminine while the older patrons are rather scruffy or quite "nelly" as is sometimes said. There is a large "dark room" where some of the customers go for meeting other customers. It is not possible to see the other person because of the darkness. You merely know someone is there and grabbing you. I personally did not like the place and I have no plans to return even if a friend pleads with me for company. You don't have to wait that long. The World Cup is just around the corner. I have neglected to post anything concerning the roof collapse of the Corinthians of Sao Paulo new stadium, the ITAQUERAO. They authorities are supposed to conduct a full investigation before repairs and completion. And this is all supposed to happed by the end of December. The stadium in Manaus is also doubtful to be fully completed and handed off by December, but most likely sometime before the World Cup is due to start. Cuiaba's building is even further behind. If the use it, only probability is without a completed rood to cover the seats.

I would have to say this thread is doing nothing to entice my return to Brazil. They better get things under control before the country is an embarrassment during the Olympics!!
