  3. Clubs/Discos 1 Le Boy | R. Raul Pompéia, 102 | 21 2513-4993 | http://www.leboy.com.br/site/ If this location seems familiar to you, chances are it's because you're already been to their sauna, Le Boy Fitness. The club part is ultra-famous among the Rio gay scene, with rent boys, go-go boys, drag shows, strip shows, and theme nights that really pack them in. If the bar seems dead, check the dark room for the action. 2 Buraco da Lacraia | Rua Andre Cavalcanti, 58 | 21 2242-0446 | http://buracodalacraia.com.br/portal/ There's a huge local crowd here of young hotties who come for the karaoke and drag shows, and stay for the dark room cruising action in this down-home club that has none of the pretension of the more chichi clubs, but all of the fun. Show up ready for anything, because anything goes here. 3 Cine Ideal | Rua da Carioca, 64 | 21 2221-1984 | http://cineideal.com.br/portal/ If you get tired of the at-times monotonous house music that's popular here, head up to the rooftop terrace for a bit of quiet, a great view of the city, and some flirty chatting with anyone who catches your eye. Note though that the house music can bring in a mixed crowd, but it's overwhelmingly gay. 4 The Week | R. Sacadura Cabral, 154 | 21 2253-1020 | http://www.theweek.com.br/ As you've come to expect from this high-end club chain, Rio's The Week is sleek, sexy and fun; this one is in a big ol' villa that they use to maximum effect. There are top DJs that bring in a hot crowd that's ready to party all night long. Note that security is tight here, so you'll need to have ID to enter and then given a bar registration card that you pay on the way out. 5 La Cueva | Rua Miguel Lemos, 51 | (21) 2267-1364 | http://www.boatelacueva.com.br/ Tired of the smooth Brazilian bodies everywhere? Then get your woof on at this cave-themed bear bar that skews a bit mature, but has plenty of young admirers milling about. Friday is the best night for action, and your entrance fee includes two drink tickets. Woof! 6 Lounge 69 | R. Prudente de Morais, 416 | 21 2522-0627 | no website Lounge 69 has a bit of word-of-mouth, underground cache, but once inside it's like they imported a beach party directly from the shoreline. Order a fruity cocktail, and get your groove on under the laser light show that pulses in time to the tropical dance music. 7 Boite 1140 | Rua Capitão Menezes 1140 | 21-3017-1792 | http://www.boite1140.com.br/ You can get a VIP card from their website to get a discount at the door and other perks (don't be put off by the hetero stock images; it's gay, gay, gay). Then once inside, enjoy the live acts, drag shows, and top-notch guest DJ. It's a fun time! 8 Sinônimo | Rua Mem de Sá 118 | (21) 8635 9767 | http://www.sinonimolapa.com.br/ The Lapa neighborhood used to be known as a hetero playground, but Sinônimo has changed that, and has made a real impact on the gay nightlife scene. Doors open at 8pm in case you want to make an early night of it, but you'll most likely stick around 'til the wee hours as the DJ brings the funk and the live shows bring the crowd to their knees. 9 Papa G | Travessa Almerinda Freitas 42 | http://www.papag.com.br/PapaG/Inicio.html It's worth the bit of a trek to get to Papa G to check out their packed schedule of entertainment and fun, with each night featuring a drag show, a live performance, and a different DJ. Check their schedule for theme nights, and splurge (relatively) on a VIP experience, which is all-you-can-drink. 10 Club Gayligula | Rua Ubaldino do Amaral, 50 | (22) 2461-44 | http://www.netgay.com.br/saunas/gayligola.htm We're putting this under both clubs and saunas, because while some may go for the facilities, others will insist it is a straight-up gay sex club there's no beating around the bush here! There are dark rooms, video rooms, glory holes, cruising areas but no escorts.

The cuisine is mixed, and served buffet style, so come hungry! If you're not starving, then have a seat at the snack bar for a little bit of this or that. 7 Bazzar | R. Barao da Torre, 538 | (32) 0228-84 | http://www.bazzar.com.br/ Fresh food served in a quiet atmosphere with some home-cooked loving thrown in for good measure. Maria Quitéria, 77 | 21 2227-2161 | http://www.salpicado.com.br/ This is your place for simple, home-cooked, traditional Brazilian food in a non-sceney atmosphere. Hotels 1 Casa Cool Beans | Rua Laurinda Santos Lobo, 136 | (21) 2262-0552 | http://www.casacoolbeans.com/ Casa Cool Beans is a 10-room gay B&B in the hip, fun Santa Teresa neighborhood and is our top pick for accommodations in Rio. This brightly colored, beautifully decorated hotel has personalized service, a pool and sun deck that's quite the scene, free wifi, and decent food as well. 2 Ipanema Plaza | Rua Farme de Amoedo, 34 | (55) 2136-8720 | http://www.ipanemaplaza.com.br/ The Ipanema Plaza is smack in the middle of the gayborhood, on the Farme de Amoedo beach and near many of the bars we list here. Note that you have to have your key with you when you go out at night to show to security upon return, and guests have to register showing ID, so no bringing back a half-naked boy with no wallet! 3 La Maison | Rua Sérgio Porto 58 | 2132053585 | http://www.lamaisonario.com/ La Maison is off the beach strip, but its five rooms have private terraces with spectacular views. The pool area will make you think you're in the French Riviera, and each room is meticulously, tastefully loyal to its individual theme (ask for the Shanghai!). 4 Best Western Sol Ipanema Hotel | Av. Vieira Souto, 320 | (55) 2125-2520 | http://www.solipanema.com.br/Hotel You can never go wrong with a Best Western, and this one is no exception. The rooftop pool and terrace (with a full bar) is a stunner, and they have 24-hour room service, free wifi and all the amenities you expect from this chain. 5 Ananab | Rua Alice 681 | 2125576789 | http://www.ananab.com/ There are views of Sugarloaf from the rooms and pool of this historical home-turned-guesthouse, and the gay couple who own it are generous with their time and knowledge of the city. You can even brush up on your Portuguese with their language classes! Note that guests CANNOT bring back guests of their own. 6 El Misti Hostel | Rua Praia de Botafogo 462 | (21) 2226-0991 | http://www.elmistihostel.com/ We don't normally recommend hostels in our listings, but this gay hostel is a good choice if sleep is not on your agenda and you don't really mind everybody being all up in your business. There are private rooms available, but they go fast so book early. 7 Lancaster Othon Travel | Avenida Atlântica 147 | 21 2169-8300 | http://www.othon.com.br/hoteis/lancaster-othon-travel#o-hotel This three-hotel has huge rooms with separate lounge areas, and balconies that overlook the beach. And it being a Sofitel, you can expect outstanding service, gorgeous rooms, and an on-site spa that will recharge your batteries for another day (and night) of fun. The hotel has a private beach club area if you're not into the chaotic scene of the public beach, or spend the day at their dead-sexy pool and deck. 9 Benidorm Palace Hotel | R. Barata Ribeiro, 547 | 21 2548-8880 | http://www.benidorm.com.br/ The Benidorm features large, simply furnished rooms, and the suites come equipped with their own Jacuzzi and sauna (for playing out your private sauna fantasies!). The gym, in a glass-walled room on the roof, has an insane view and a pool and terrace right beside it, which is perfect for those who prefer to watch others exercise. 10. Atlantico Copacabana Hotel | Rua Siqueira Campos, 90 | Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro | 55 21- 2548-0011 http://www.atlanticocopacabanahotel.com/ The Atlantico Hotel is one of the mainstays of many on this site. It was very popular a few years back because of its close proximity to Point 202. It is within walking distance of the sauna. It is also an easy walk to the beach at Copacabana. There are many nice restaurants in the area and a subway station is 1 minute walk from the hotel. The rooms are a bit old and outdated and they dont seem to spend money on renovations or remodeling but if you are looking for a place right next door to Point 202, this is the place to stay. 11. JW Marriott | Avenida Atlantica, 2600, | Copacabana · Rio de Janeiro | 55-21-2545-6500 | http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/riomc-jw-marriott-hotel-rio-de-janeiro/ The Marriott is located directly on Copacabana Beach. 11. Tom, I appreciate your recounting of your experiences and presenting them here for our enjoyment, and I also concur with you in traveling with a friend whose interests and desires are compatible to yours. Barr and I have developed a fairly good relationship in terms of traveling together and enjoying the culture that exists in Buenos Aires and Rio and Sao Paulo. By his being with me in terms of sharing apartments and going to events as well as to the saunas-- his presence and being able to converse in the language of the natives-- truly enhanced my travel experiences. Again, thanks and continue to enjoy life!

  13. I met with the managers of the JW Marriott and both said the same thing. The cost of living for them is insane. The majority of people I spoke to said they can't afford Rio and they are from Brazil. The same thing was said by many of those that I know in Sao Paulo. Brazil is not cheap. Yes, perhaps the saunas are, but food, etc. is not cheap.

  14. I have finished up my time in Brazil. I had a great time but thought I'd do a little (hopefully) summary of my time there. I am so glad I found the Holiday Inn Express in Sao Paulo. It was a great hotel and I loved the area. I always felt very safe and the area had tons of restaurants. For saunas, I had fun at both Fragata and Lagoa. Both had great guys and were busy on most nights. Some of you may remember me posting years ago about a place in the outskirts of Sao Paulo called Alterosas. It closed a few years back. However, one client in Lagoa told me it was supposed to reopen. I hope that happens. I didn't have a great deal to say about the discos and night clubs in Sao Paulo but some of my past posts have talked about these things. There is no place on earth better for discos and nightlife than Sao Paulo. I have never seen any other place that can compete. The boys in Sao Paulo work hard in the day and play even harder at night. There are also so many things to see and do around the city and IMHO, Sao Paulo has some of the most amazing restaurants on earth. It is just one fucking amazing city! In Fortaleza, I don't think I would stay at the Holiday Inn again. It was outdated and old and just not my cup of tea. However, there are some great saunas there and the boys on the beach are beautiful and approachable. My regret is not spending more time here. I wish I had stayed for a week as I think I would have really enjoyed the city and the boys. But, I was sick for the time in this city and I could not wait to get out of there at the end as I thought getting to another city might make me feel better. It didn't. LOL In Salvadore, I am very glad I stayed at the Mercure Rio on the beach. It was very inexpensive at about 240R per night or 120USD. The area was also full of great restaurants and I'll be staying at the same hotel in the future. However, I've decided I'll take up IHPGUY's suggestions to me to spend more time in Pria de Forte and that area. I really loved the area. It was full of middle class Brazilians who have holiday / weekend homes there. There were tons of hotels, etc in the area. When I was in Rio, I met the manager of the JW Marriott and she was telling me about the area as her husband is from there. She said that the area was once nothing there. The owner of the Mecure Hotels decided to build a hotel there and then everything else came around. She said that many say it has a very Asian feel to it as he is Asian and perhaps that is why I liked it so much. For my next trip to Salvador, I'll take a boy with me who loves the beaches and surfing and just chill with him for a week. In Rio, the JW Marriott in Copacabana was a great location. It was easy to get to all the saunas but it was in walking distance (long walk) of Point 202. I have said on my past 20 times to Rio that Club 117 was the best. Well, I hate to admit it but I think Meio Mundo is better. At least when it comes to the boys and the attitude of everyone. My only issue with Meio Mundo is that the rooms do not have showers inside them and they only have communal showers. Monday is the best for Meio Mundo and Tuesday is the best for Club 117. I was in Point 202 3 times and I honestly can't tell you which night is best there as it was pretty barren of clients and boys each time I went. That being said, tomcal picked up one guy from there that I have to say is one of the hottest guys I have seen. So, perhaps it is still best to just test them all. My favorite restaurant in Rio is still Porcao Ipanema. I love this place but the price is not cheap. But, if you are looking for true Brazilian meats, this place is amazing. I went there 3 times on this trip and loved it. I also eat several times at a place called Sierra Campos Grill. IHPGUY had suggested it one day when tom and I met him for lunch and I loved the place. Since it was only 4 minutes walk from my hotel, I went there for lunch several times and dinner one night. The cost depends on who much food you eat at it is a por kilo place where they weight your food. Just be sure not to loose your ticket as they will not let you out without paying. As I have said, I have been to Brazil about 20 times over the years and I love several cities for different reasons. For me, IMHO Rio is one of the most breathtaking cities on earth! You just can't be anything but amazed at how beautiful the landscape is with the mountains, rock formations and oceans all together. The beaches are world class and the city has so many architectural marvels that you can't see everything in a few days. I wish I had more time to spend with IHPGuy on this trip as he is a wealth of information on Rio and gives an amazing tour. He was very kind to show me around the city one day and I really enjoyed it. I have been to Brazil many times on my own but I love it best when I have friends with me. One my first trip to Brazil. my friend Hooboy met me. He showed me around Sao Paulo and got me to fall in love with the Intercontinental Hotel group. I was with my boyfriend from NYC at the time and Hooboy treated us both to a great time. I could not keep up with Hooboy but the BF did. They were perfect together as Hooboy loved late night discos and parties. I am more of a morning person so as my wind was dying out at night, Hooboy and the boyfriend were just getting ready to liven things up. It was also on this first trip that I met Alex. Alex was my first Brazilian love. He did one three way after another with me and the BF and he stayed with us every night. He then went with us to Rio and spent the entire trip with us. The sex was fantastic and he knew me really well. I am not a late night person like he and the BF was but I like to be included in things. So, they wanted to go out at night EVERY night and Alex would bring to my hotel a different surfer boy each night. One boy named Fabio I remember so well as Alex said, "if you smoke weed with him, he will fuck all night long." I laughed as Alex and the BF went out to the clubs and I was left in the room with a stranger surfer boy. Once he lit up, we were on the balcony of the Intercontinental Hotel, he started sucking me off. I felt a bit exposed as there was an apartment complex across the way that could see us but it was so hot, I just let it continue. He just kept sucking until I came and he swallowed very drop. It was fabulous. But, that was just the start of our night. The more he smoked, the hornier he got and I don't think I have fucked in so many positions in all my life. When Alex and the BF got back, we were still have sex and they joined in. I think my dick was raw from so much friction but it was one of the best nights I have ever had. LOL I did see Fabio about 10 times over the years but he was never as good as that night. I ended up taking the Brazilian Alex to Paris with me for 2 weeks and we did all of France. My favorite night with him was in the Moulin Rouge Theater. He loved it and we took a great photos that we gave to his family. Years later, I saw him in Barcelona. He never left the EU and just stayed there. Brazil brings us so many great memories of the boys I have met there. As most of them don't speak a word of English I was always at a loss so I had the concierge at my hotel interpret for me most of the time. I know it must have been weird for them to translate for a big American and a Brazilian hooker but they did it anyway. One year, I took 8 boys to Carnival parade and it really did make for one of the best nights of their lives and it did the same for me knowing they were so happy. Falling in love in Brazil is also easy. I ended up falling in love many times and considered moving there for a boy. But, in the end, my business sense got the better of me. LOL One fantastic trip was with Marc Anthony and Firecat. They both had boys from USA and Canada with them and we were in both Sao Paulo and Rio and we saw everything. There was some good memories. On this trip tomcal made me have a blast. I was an instant celebrity when I was with him. It reminded me of when I would go to Montreal with Marc Anthony many years ago. Tomcal knows ALL the boys and he also makes sure everyone is having a good time. He is not jealous of the boys going with someone else and I am not either so we were perfect in that regard. Both he and I want the boys to work at much as possible so when we had a new boy that we liked, we made sure the other one knew this and met him. It is hard to find good traveling companions as some guys get so fucking jealous and think that if they like a boy in a sauna, that none of their friends so go with him out of respect. The boys are there to work. If you are jealous of a boy in a sauna, take them from the sauna and pay for their life. If you are not doing this, they need to work and you should be happy they are making money. Tom was great with his and he made sure I knew anyone he was with it was OK for me to meet and go with. Well, with one exception. He had one guy that he did 2-3 times each night and the boy didn't get a free minute for me. But, that is OK as well because I was there a few days after him and got the chance to see him a few times on my own. Now, I know what he was taking him 2-3 times each night for. I had a great trip. Used points to upgrade on Delta for my ticket and I used points at 3 of my hotels. So, the entire month was very cheap for me. The biggest expense was the boys. Now, all of that said, I have to admit something to Firecat. I will only say this once and NEVER again. LOL He is right when he says that Thailand is so much cheaper than Brazil. There really is no comparison. The hotels, restaurants, taxis, etc are all more expensive for similar things in Thailand. The boys are about the same but everything else is more expensive. However, if you have a really good guy like IHPGUY who knows how to navigate the area, it can be very reasonable. I am just not a subway or bus guy. I like taxis and nice restaurants. So, if Firecat does not read this, good! I hate to tell him he is every right on something as he never lets me forget it. But, he is right when it comes to the rates between Thailand and Brazil. However, there is no comparison with the boys. The boys in Brazil are passionate, versatile sex machines who love 3 ways and fuck like there is no tomorrow. The Thai boys I know and love are great sex as well but are more passive and less aggressive than the boys in Brazil. I love things about both places and luckily I have built a life where I don't have to choose one or the other. I do think everyone that goes to Brazil should also go to Thailand to see the comparison. And, I think that everyone that goes to Thailand should also make a trip to Brazil. I can't tell you how much I truly love both places and how much I love the guys in both places. Lucky that I don't have to pick one over the other as I don't know which place I would choose. I am very happy I made this trip. I had a blast in every city (expect when I was sick with the flu). I got to meet some guy guys and I literally went to bed each night with a smile on my face. Brazil is paradise and I hope that this very long and boring thread I have done for my trip encourages a few of you to dip into the waters of Ipanema one day!
